“When you first come to Palm Beach, you think you’re the oldest and the richest. But then you realize you are the youngest and poorest.”
Everybody has goals. For new resident Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig), hers is to enter the world of Palm Beach high society circa 1969. She dreams of joining the Palm Royale, the most exclusive country club in the area. It’s the sort of exclusive place filled with swimming pools, galas and daytime martinis that feeds into the competitive charity season. It’s the time of year where the wealthy women in the area show off their wallets and organizational skills to vie for the coveted title of “Queen of the Season.”
All this just to be mentioned in the local society papers. After all, “At the Palm Royale, the more you gave, the more you got.”

In the series finale of Physical, lead character Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) takes a look at herself in the mirror and notices a pimple along her laugh line. Her natural inclination is to pop the blemish, but upon leaning in and examining the spot more closely, she decides to leave it be. The scene in the episode titled “Lucky Star” is a nod to the series premiere, “Let’s Do This Thing,” which debuted on June 18, 2021, and introduced Sheila in a similar vein along with the inner voice that would threaten to be her undoing over the next three seasons.
“It’s a small thing, but when she looks at herself in the mirror at the beginning, there’s so much beauty, yet all she sees is ugliness and darkness,” series creator Annie Weisman tells The Hollywood Reporter. “At the end of the season when she looks at herself in the mirror,...

After three seasons and 30 episodes, Sheila Rubin (Rose Byrne) finally got a happy ending on “Physical.” Except in keeping with Annie Weisman’s Apple TV+ series, that ending may not be what audiences expect. Warning: Spoilers ahead.
In fact, Weisman told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast that the ending might be more redemptive than happy. “She gets what she wants, but in order to do it, she’s alone,” Weisman said. “I did not believe that she could get what she wants and also be partnered. It’s just not true to her story. But she’s liberated, she’s free, no one’s tying her down. No one’s forcing her to be anyone she’s not. And she has a huge amount to give and she has community through her work, and she has figured out and cracked female friendship in a real way. She has real intimacy,...

No one, not show creator Annie Weisman nor longtime director Stephanie Laing, knew that Kelly Kilmartin would have a Southern accent until Zooey Deschanel showed up for Season 3 of Apple TV+’s “Physical.”
Deschanel’s sitcom star and rising fitness guru Kelly (glimpsed in the Season 2 finale) assumes the role of Sheila’s vicious inner voice for the final season, as Sheila comes ever closer to her dream of an aerobics empire in ’80s San Diego. And while audiences watched star Rose Byrne neg herself for two seasons in voiceover, now Byrne’s Sheila is reacting in real-time to what Kelly has to say — and none of it kind.
“We always wanted Zooey, and when she said yes, we were thrilled, but we never really talked about what she sounded like,” Laing told IndieWire. “When Zooey tried out that accent, Annie and I were like, ‘That is incredible. Please,...

The third and final season of “Physical” will introduce a new competitor to Rose Byrne’s Sheila Rubin.
Just as the dark voices in her head have silenced as Sheila commits to her wellness journey and builds a television fitness empire, a new opponent arises for the entrepreneur in a rising exercise celebrity, played by Zooey Deschanel.
“You are a national television personality now,” Greta tells Sheila in the trailer. “We are on the precipice of something big, there’s just one problem: Kelly Kilmartin … she’s the most famous fitness star.”
Doubt immediately begins to creep into Sheila’s mind, manifesting itself as an imaginary Kelly (Deschanel), who taunts Sheila by saying, “I’m better than you” and “you’re just hanging on by a thread, just waiting for that moment to snap.”

“She’s a wildly complicated character,” says Rose Byrne of Sheila, the central figure of her series “Physical” on Apple TV+. Season 2 of the series takes Sheila on a wild ride as her addiction, and mounting secrets, threaten to overturn her life. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“When you have such an addiction and illness, it’s so hard to be intimate and close to anyone because it requires vulnerability,” explains Byrne. Sheila battles an eating disorder in the series which often pushes her to the brink. Not only must she contend with the compulsion to binge eat, but the desire to keep her illness hidden from everyone around her affects every aspect of her life. Sheila is a master of secrets. The resulting sense of isolation is terrible for the character, but provides Byrne with fascinating material to dive into.

When Stephanie Laing began work on “Physical” Season 2, the director and executive producer knew she “wanted it to be bigger.” The sophomore iteration of the Apple TV+ series ups the stakes for its main character Sheila (Rose Byrne) by providing her with massive success at the top of the season before a dramatic decline. “She has to have a fall” explains Laing, noting that they had to “show her spiral” out of control. So maybe this isn’t exactly the ideal moment to be releasing a TV series in which James Corden plays a seemingly nice guy who turns out to be prone to impatience and irritation. That the series, Amazon’s Mammals, also has a restaurant backdrop is a particularly poisonous version of serendipity.
It muddles one’s ability to make an assessment as ostensibly non-controversial as saying that Corden is actually really good in Mammals. I mean, before he was doing karaoke with celebrities in a trailer-pulled car or publicly smooching disgraced former White House press secretaries, Corden was a Tony-winning actor. I can still easily imagine people complaining that Corden’s performance in Mammals is annoying, or they can’t view his character as anything other than annoying, as if that’s not the intended nature of the character he’s playing.

James Corden may be leaving "The Late Late Show" in 2023, but he's certainly keeping himself busy. In his next venture, "Mammals," Corden stars in a new comedy-drama series for Prime Video, which is shockingly not also a secret musical. Those most familiar with him for his "Carpool Karaoke" stunts may be shocked to see Corden in an entirely different form, as a grieving chef willing to throw hands and take a headbutt if the situation calls for it. Prime Video released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming series Monday, which doesn't give us a lot to work with other than some evocative imagery and Corden providing a laundry list of words to describe his current relationship.
