Downton Abbey

Ah yes, we have a winner for the best ‘Comfort Food Movie’ of them all. When a trailer for this show popped up at a screening of The Farewell back in August, I heard gasps of excitement from the (slightly older-skewing) audience, as if everyone’s favorite relatives were coming back to town. Loyal fans of the massively popular TV series will be delighted: if you enjoyed it week by week or streaming, you’re going to love this ‘one more time’ get-together with the elegant Crawleys and their engaging domestic staff.

The period drama continues the story of the Crawleys, and depicts a visit to their English country estate by the king and queen of England.

The film is directed by Michael Engler and written by Julian Fellowes, who also created and wrote the hit television series by the same name.

The series ran for six seasons on ITV and PBS. It became a huge success in China, with DVDs and internet showings with subtitles now required viewing. Audiences in the Communist country are particularly drawn to the depictions of the British upper class.

‘Downton Abbey’ Set for December China Release
The “Downton Abbey” movie will get its chance to charm China thanks to a theatrical release on December 13, nearly three months after its U.S. September 20 release date.

The Julian Fellowes period TV series has been an extremely popular hit in China over the years, with audiences in the Communist country drawn in by the depictions of the opulent lives of Britain’s upper class in the show. All six season are available for streaming on the Youku platform.

With what was reportedly 160 million viewers tuning in back in 2014, the show sparked such a craze for British-style luxury that it actually initiated a trend among wealthier Chinese families to employ British-style butlers, creating a boom for butler training schools and agencies. And when Chinese premier Li Keqiang took a trip to the U.K. that year, British prime minister David Cameron gifted him a copy of the script of the first-ever “Downton” episode,

Downton Abbey Star Explains Why Maggie Smith Always Ends Up Returning

Maggie Smith isn’t one to turn down an RSVP to Downton Abbey. Or so says Elizabeth McGovern.

The Cora Crawley actress recently sat down with Pop Culture to discuss the runaway success of Focus Features’ Downton Abbey movie, and touched base on her legendary co-star, Maggie Smith.

Turns out Smith, who’s known for her role as Violet Crawley, has a tendency for bidding farewell to Downton Abbey and its cast, only to pull a U-turn and book her place at Highclere Castle any time there’s news of a possible continuation. That’s exactly what happened for Julian Fellowes’ motion picture, it seems, as McGovern told Pop Culture:

Every single year during the run of the series Maggie would say ‘This is my last’… Then, back she’d come. I think she gets bored when she’s not working.

Bo Report: ‘Maleficent’ tops ‘Zombieland’ in the battle of the sequels

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.’

In the battle of the sequels Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil beat Sony’s Zombieland: Double Tap last weekend but neither was a match for the third frame of Warner Bros’ juggernaut Joker.

Launching on 60 screens, Universal’s Judy Garland biopic Judy hit a high note while Cinema Live’s Billy Connolly: The Sex Life of Bandages did not generate many laughs or dollars and Icon’s mystery thriller Strange But True bombed.

It was a soft trading weekend at cinemas as the top 20 titles harvested $14.2 million, down 27 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero.

Todd Phillips’ Joker rang up $4.3 million despite falling by 41 per cent, hoisting its total to $28.5 million. The WB/Village Roadshow/Bron Studios’ production has amassed $738.5 million worldwide: $247.2 million in the Us and $491.3 million internationally, where it now ranks as the fourth biggest DC comics-based blockbuster of all time.

‘Downton Abbey’ Becomes Focus Features’ Highest-Grossing Pic At Domestic B.O. With $84M+, Unseating ‘Brokeback Mountain’
Here’s a little, but huge, box office stat: Focus Features’ Downton Abbey has outstripped the $83 million domestic box office gross of three-time Oscar winner Brokeback Mountain to become the label’s highest-grossing title of all time stateside. Brokeback Mountain owned the record for the last 13 years, and on Monday Downton beat it with $83.5M.

The current domestic box office for the Michael Engler-directed feature adaptation of the Carnival TV series is $84.9M. Worldwide take for Downton is $155.1M, while Brokeback‘s final global stands at $178M.

“This isn’t just a huge achievement for Focus Features, but a huge sign that specialty moviegoers still very much want and are looking to have that theatrical experience,” Focus chairman Peter Kujawski tells Deadline. “Downton offered that and audiences responded in a big way.”

Indeed, Downton is a huge bright spot on the specialty front. At a time when streaming is

Bo Report: ‘Hustlers’ trumped by ‘Joker’ as ‘Gemini Man’ bombs

‘Hustlers’ (Photo credit: Stx Films).

Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers is a hit in the Us but the crime caper starring Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart and Cardi B was never going to beat the second weekend of Todd Phillips’ blockbuster Joker in Australia.

Meanwhile Ang Lee’s $140 million-budgeted action thriller Gemini Man is shaping as a write-off for Paramount Pictures and co-investors Skydance, Alibaba and Fosun.

Rachel GriffithsRide Like a Girl maintained a fair clip in its third weekend while two alternate content releases, Nt Live: Fleabag and Metallica & San Francisco Symphony: S&m drew sizable audiences.

The top 20 titles generated $19.2 million last weekend, 13 per cent down on the previous frame, according to Numero.

Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the twisted, disenfranchised clown-for-hire and stand-up comic in 1980s Gotham, Joker rang up $7.4 million, easing by just 24 per cent, hoisting its total to $22 million.

Bo Report: ‘Joker’ aces the competition while ‘Ride Like a Girl’ gallops to a record

‘Joker’ (Photo credit: Warner Bros)

Is Todd Phillips’ Joker an enthralling masterpiece or a disturbing and deeply derivative incitement to commit violence? The comic book-inspired movie has polarised the critics but audiences in Australia and around the world have voted with their feet.

The action adventure starring Joaquin Phoenix as the twisted, disenfranchised clown-for-hire and stand-up comic in 1980s Gotham smashed industry opening records for October in Oz, the Us and internationally last weekend.

Meanwhile Rachel GriffithsRide Like a Girl now ranks as the top-grossing Australian release of the year after racing through its second weekend. Ticket sales surged thanks to the school holidays and the new releases including Indian import War and Chinese dramas My People, My Country and The Captain.

The top 20 titles harvested $21.9 million from Thursday through Sunday, 80 per cent up on the previous weekend, according to Numero.

Joker punched up $9.7 million and $11.9 million including the Monday Labor Day holiday.

2020 Oscar Predictions: Best Director (Updated: October 7)

2020 Oscar Predictions: Best Director (Updated: October 7)
One of the big questions about the 2020 Oscars is whether or not there will be a split between the winners of Best Picture and Best Director, as we’ve seen in three of the last four years. Before the academy reintroduced the preferential ballot for Best Picture in 2010, such divides were fairly rare. Now, they are the rule rather than the exception at the Academy Awards. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2020 Oscars predictions for Best Director.)

Why is this?

Unlike every other Oscar category, which are decided by a popular vote, the winner of the Best Picture award is determined by a weighted ballot. Voters rank their choices from first to last. If one nominee garners more than 50% of the first place vote, it automatically wins. If, however, no nominee can meet that threshold, the film with the fewest first place votes gets eliminated, with its ballot getting reapportioned to the second place choice.
