DC/Dox has unveiled the lineup for its second annual edition, which takes place in Washington, D.C., from June 13-16. The documentary festival will kick things off with “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” the Warner Bros. Discovery film that premiered at Sundance earlier this year.
The second edition of the fest includes 51 features and 47 shorts from 17 countries. That’s up from last year’s state of 31 features and 21 shorts from eight countries. This year’s lineup is made of 60% of filmmakers identifying as women or non-binary. Films will screen at venues including Smithsonian’s Museum of American History, the Burke Theatre at the U.S. Navy Memorial, and the National Archives.
“The films on the 2024 slate highlight the remarkable breadth and depth of documentary storytelling today,” says DC/Dox co-founder and festival director Sky Sitney. “From filmmakers around the world, these works recalibrate the past through archival footage, immerse themselves...

Kevin Macdonald’s finely balanced portrait of the disgraced Dior designer, on Mubi from Friday, is the newest arrival on a catwalk of fashion industry movies, from Funny Face to Zoolander
For those who bleat on about the iniquities of supposed “cancel culture”, the career of British fashion designer John Galliano is a useful counterpoint. Sacked in 2011 as the creative director of Christian Dior after an appalling incident of antisemitic abuse on his part, he spent two years in the wilderness before being hired by Oscar de la Renta and subsequently Maison Margiela, where he has been for a decade. A-listers still wear his gowns on red carpets. Life goes on. Kevin Macdonald’s documentary High & Low: John Galliano (streaming on Mubi from 26 April) chronicles Galliano’s rise and fall and rise with a more distanced, critical eye than you may expect from a film co-produced by Vogue publisher Condé Nast.

Superman director James Gunn made a video appearance during the Warner Bros panel for CinemaCon. While he didn’t have a lot to reveal just yet, he did tease that next year will be the “summer of Superman” as he revealed a closer look at the new logo, which seems reminiscent of the one from the Max Fleischer cartoons.
DC Studios co-ceo Peter Safran came out on the CinemaCon stage to tease the other Superman movie: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. The heart-wrenching documentary was acquired by Warner Bros. earlier this year for $15 million, and Safran revealed that it would be released in theaters this September. An exact date wasn’t specified, but the trailer screened at CinemaCon brought tears to more than a few in the audience.

Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is a documentary that’s set to debut in early 2024: more here.
In the past 24 hours, the full programme has been announce for this year’s Sundance Film Festival, with a mix of eye-catching features from around the globe set to debut this coming January.
Here’s one that’s particularly caught my eye, though: a documentary feature about the late and much-missed Christopher Reeve.
To a generation of us growing up, Reeve simply was Superman. But as his autobiography testifies too, there was an awful lot more to him, both before and after the accident that would be such a major turning point in his life. It was in 1995 that, in a riding accident, Reeve’s first and second vertebrae were irreparably damaged, leaving his paralysed from the neck down.
His book is incredibly candid about this period of his life, and the slow rebuild.

Updated: “Super/Man,” a documentary about the life of Christopher Reeve, has finalized a deal to sell to Warner Bros. Discovery following its buzzy Sundance Film Festival premiere. It’s an interesting home for the documentary, because Reeve experienced his greatest commercial success playing the Man of Steel in the first four Superman movies, which Warner Bros. produced. James Gunn, the co-head of Warner-owned DC Studios, is currently reviving the character in the upcoming “Superman: Legacy,” which he wrote and will direct.

Exclusive: In a deal that when closed will be worth $15 million, Warner Bros Discovery has emerged as frontrunner to land the Sundance buzz title documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, sources said. The inspirational film is about the late actor best known for playing the Man of Steel. Docu’s focus is on how he found strength and purpose through activism after he was paralyzed in an equestrian accident. I believe that puts the film in precedent setting territory for a docu launched at Sundance. Numerous bidders have been in the mix, but I hear it’s likely to land at the home of the Superman film franchise.
The Sundance docu category is on fire, as numerous bidders also chase Will & Harper, the road trip between Will Ferrell and Harper Steele, after the latter surprised his pal he’d come out as a trans woman.

Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story recounts and examines the incredibly compelling, tragic, redemptive story of actor and activist Christopher Reeve. He was made famous playing the superhero Superman in Richard Donner/Richard Lester/Sidney J. Furie’s quartet of films in the ’70s and ’80s. In 1995, Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down after being thrown from a horse during a competition. That terrible accident eventually sparked the creation of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a non-profit whose goal is to cure spinal-cord injury and improve the quality of life for those with paralysis.
It’s hard to write criticism of films like these. For the release of Richard Donner's "Superman: The Movie" in 1978, an ingenious ad campaign was launched that centered around promising audiences something no movie could hope to deliver. "You'll Believe A Man Can Fly," read the tagline on the one-sheets, supplemented by a beautifully evocative painting of clouds and the "S" shield logo. As audacious as this campaign was, it nonetheless was part of the ethos surrounding the film and the depiction of the titular character. While it's true that certain visual effects techniques were developed to make the flying sequences in "Superman" try and live up to such a promise, Donner knew that the element he really had to focus on was casting the part. If audiences believed in the man, they'd believe he was flying.

Super/Man, which charts the life of Christopher Reeve, has reportedly sparked a bidding war at what has been a pretty quiet Sundance so far.
Whilst some talented actors have tried, with some even making a pretty good fist of it, nobody has ever embodied the role of Superman like Christopher Reeve.

Unsurprisingly, it looks like we weren’t alone in thinking that such a project could be a fascinating watch: the film has reportedly sparked a bidding frenzy, with bids currently reaching up to $10m.

What is the Sundance Film Festival outside of Park City?
Sundance Institute CEO Joanna Vicente has addressed the possibility of a move for the Sundance Film Festival out of Park City, where it has taken place since the early ’80s.
Vicente was the surprise guest at the live-taping of Puck founding partner Matt Belloni‘s Ringer podcast The Town. During the wide-ranging conversation that touched on everything from the Netflix acquisition of Fair Play to the five-year plan for the festival, Belloni asked Vicente about the state of negotiations for staying in Park City.
“Park City is part of Sundance,” Vicente answered. “It’s a beautiful location. It’s kind of remote. We get immersed into the festival.” At that point, Belloni interjected to say, “I feel a but coming,” adding that in his conversations with Uber drivers, restaurant employees and ski industry insiders, “They don’t like Sundance.”

Plot: A deep dive into the life of Christopher Reeve, from his overnight stardom as Superman through to his life after the tragic accident which left him a person with quadriplegia.
Review: When I heard Sundance would be showing a documentary about the life of Christopher Reeve, I correctly assumed that it wouldn’t leave a dry eye in this house whenever it was screened. Indeed, as the premiere screening wound up, the sobs from the audience were pronounced, and Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is certainly a heartbreaking experience.
Directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui wisely adopt a non-linear style to tell Reeve’s story, opening with his accident, which came at a time when he was trying to rebuild his career following the disastrous end of the Superman franchise with Quest for Peace. Only a year before his devastating fall, he had a good role in Merchant...

It can be difficult for biographical film, documentary or otherwise, to be all-encompassing without sacrificing its point or perspective. However, “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” not only feels complete in its detailed telling, but avoids the pitfalls of both hagiography — despite limiting its interviews to a tight-knit circle — and of cheap inspiration porn. It helps that directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui assume the audience has some amount of familiarity with Christopher Reeve, the iconic Superman star who would go on to be paralyzed from the neck down after a horse-riding accident in 1995, so they structure their narrative around these two vital flashpoints in the actor’s life, while allowing his family and friends (including stars like Glenn Close and Susan Sarandon) to fill in the gaps with moving personal anecdotes.

Nonfiction filmmaking duo Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui turned heads with their dazzling 2018 fashion doc McQueen, which gracefully walked the line between celebration and sorrow, between the public highs of a brilliant creator of wearable art and the private lows of a man plagued by insurmountable demons. They achieve a comparable balance in their moving new film, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, between the iconic movie star and the man whose life was stalled by a tragic accident. The big difference is that unlike Alexander McQueen, Reeve did manage to overcome long days of darkness and despair, living a productive life for his remaining years.
Late in the film, footage shows President Barack Obama in 2009 signing the Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Act, the bipartisan-supported first legislation specific to the millions of under-represented Americans living with spinal cord injuries and paralysis, named for the actor and his fellow activist wife.

Hollywood decamps for Park City this week, braving snow drifts and thin air in a quest to find the next indie breakouts, Oscar contenders and buzzy horror hits.
Yes, Sundance has returned in all its mountain-side glory, and with it comes the expectation that with enough tenacity and some big checks, studios and streamers will land the next “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Brooklyn,” “Manchester by the Sea” or “The Big Sick” (to rattle off just a few of the festival films that have sparked all-night bidding wars).
Of course, not every heated battle for the next big Sundance-bred hit leads to commercial success and Oscar glory (“Hamlet 2” or “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” know a bit about that). Even some of the 2023 films that landed major deals, such as John Carney’s “Flora and Son” or the Anne Hathaway-led “Eileen,” received a muted reception when they made...

Given the current dismal political and cultural climate as well as streaming services’ massive appetite for celebrity driven content, it comes as no surprise that the 40th edition of the Sundance Film Festival is chock full of portrait documentaries. Frida Kahlo, Christopher Reeve, Luther Vandross and Tammy Faye are just a few of the boldface names that are being examined in various docus featured in the Sundance nonfiction lineup.
The festival is no stranger to star-driven docus. In recent years, films about Ruth Bader Ginsburg (“Rbg”), Fred Rogers (“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”), Harvey Weinstein (“Untouchable”), Michael Jackson (“Leaving Neverland”), Kanye West (“jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy”), Bill Cosby (“We Need to Talk About Cosby”) and most recently Judy Blume (“Judy Blume Forever”) and Michael J. European production powerhouse Mediawan has bought a majority stake in Misfits, the prestige U.K. company whose anticipated documentary “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” will play at the Sundance Film Festival.
The London-based production company, founded in 2016, is run by Andee (Dee) Ryder and Ian Bonhôte, the BAFTA-nominated filmmaker-producer duo behind “McQueen,” the critically laureled documentary about the fashion designer Lee Alexander McQueen. The company’s thriving track record in the non-fiction space also includes “Rising Phoenix,” a documentary about the Paralympic movement which won a pair of Emmy Awards, and “Kingdom of Dreams,” a four-part premium non-fiction series about the fashion industry which sold across 169 territories, as well as “The Contestant” which premiered at last year’s Toronto and sold to Hulu for a 2024 release.

Los Angeles, Jan 13 (Ians) Ian Bonhote and Peter Ettedgui’s new documentary, ‘Super/Man’ picks up a very different version of Christopher Reeve’s journey.
Reeve is now paralysed from the neck down after a fall from his horse. He cannot move, he cannot soar. His wife, Dana, tends to him and then talks of seeking out towels fresh from the dryer so she can get some of the warmth that she no longer can receive from her husband, reports Variety.
The couple’s young son, Will, celebrates his third birthday party at his father’s hospital. Remarkably, less than a year later, Reeve is on stage at the Oscars receiving a standing ovation.
As per Variety, he teaches Will how to ride his bike, moving along with him and offering encouragement from his motorised wheelchair.

There’s an iconic scene in 1978’s “Superman” of Clark Kent, played by Christopher Reeve, spying Lois Lane dangling from a helicopter. He locates a revolving door, emerges as the Man of Steel, and soars upward and catches a falling Lane.
“Easy, miss, I’ve got you,” says Superman. Lane is still panicking. “You’ve got me? Who’s got you?”
Superman smiles, offers a casual goodbye and flies off into the night, his forelock perfect. It’s the image the world held of Reeve until 1995. And that’s where Ian Bonhote and Peter Ettedgui’s new documentary, “Super/Man,” picks up a very different version of the hero’s journey.

There’s films that are dealing with the environment. There’s lots of other things happening, so it’s a nice mix we think.”

The modern Olympic Games date back to 1859, with roots in ancient history. The Paralympic Games date back to 1948. Even today, the latter are typically poorly funded and don't receive anything like as much media attention, Even so, they play an important role, giving disabled athletes something to strive for and helping the general public to see disabled people around them as individuals with real potential.
A history of the Paralympic Games has been a long time coming and directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui should be commended for taking it on. It's just a shame that they had to make the film they did. Whilst there is some important work here and its reflections on the past are often interesting, its treatment of disabled people in the present day is naïve, patronising and resoundingly twee.
This is disability storytelling for the 'you can can accomplish anything if you really believe!
