It was a rainy night in Hollywood, but no spirits were dampened at the Producers Guild of America’s West Coast Celebration of PGA Award nominated producing teams.
Held at the Hollywood Museum and bathed in the soft glow of Mel’s Diner’s neon lights, hundreds of guests snaked through four full levels of entertainment industry memorabilia – the multiple displays featuring costumes from the Pointer Sisters are not to be missed – while enjoying their choice open bars and wide-variety of hors d’oeuvres.
Deep inside the Max Factor building, even queuing for the elevator was more genial than at typical gatherings, in no small part due to the working bar housed inside – first introduced by Max Factor on the opening night of his Make-Up studio in 1935.
But for as comfortable as it was to lounge amidst Hollywood’s past, the evening was much more concerned about looking ahead towards the industry’s bright future.

Before TV movies were dissed with the phrase ‘disease of the month,’ this 1973 film surprised and moved audiences with the realistic story of a young mother facing a fatal illness. It’s directed by the great Joseph Sargent and graced with the music of John Denver, but its impact rests upon the remarkable, affecting performance of actress Cristina Raines, then just twenty years old.

This week Guilty Rich examines the case of Andrew Luster, who was born into a life of privilege and thought he was above the law as he carried out a series of rapes. Luster is the great-grandson of cosmetics magnate Max Factor, Sr., and should have been one of the heirs to the family fortune. However, when he received his $1 million trust fund he moved to a $600K cottage by the beach and grew more distant from his family, preferring to party hard and surf than get involved in any of the philanthropic work the family are famous for. He had...read more...

Barns are a-burning, Paul Newman is recommended to Joanne Woodward as ‘a big stud horse’ and Lee Remick oozes sexuality all over Martin Ritt’s CinemaScope screen. William Faulkner may be the literary source, but this tale of ambition in the family of yet another southern Big Daddy is given the faux Tennessee Williams treatment — it’s a grand soap opera with a fistful of great stars having a grand time.

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's Sin City (2005) is playing on Mubi June 18 - July 17, 2016 in the United States. Sin CityWhat happens when a performer’s face changes? This very question animated a bewildering piece by Owen Gleiberman last month in Variety, wherein Gleiberman—a man—pondered whether Renée Zellweger’s slightly aged, maybe plastic surgery-tinkered visage made her an entirely different performer. He sustained this mediation on the basis of a whopping three-minute trailer for Bridget Jones’ sBaby, hoarily declaring his good intentions to combat Hollywood’s sexist machinations at his piece’s onset. Yet, in spite of this pretense, his approach exhibited an astonishing lack of stringency, ultimately scrutinizing Zellweger along the same sexist lines he claimed to bemoan. Like others, I find this storied practice of male critics inspecting women’s faces pretty odious. If male critics have gotten craftier than such forefathers as John Simon (who,...

Recently, we’ve noted a number of instances in which watchdog agencies flagged YouTube videos that were not properly marked as brand-sponsored marketing tools. The latest channel under fire from the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (Asa) is Beauty Recommended, where a video hosted by vlogger Ruth Crilly had to be removed because it did not properly note that it was sponsored by Procter & Gamble.
Beauty Recommended, which is run by P&G’s Max Factor brand, does include disclaimers at the beginning of all its videos. "It's fun to dress up for work," she says about her eyebrow-raising transformation. "You know, it's always nice to be in New York, in a little convertible Mercedes, and it's good."

Gwyneth also rocks dramatic lashes and a bright statement lip a la Marilyn.
"I think I like the lipstick the best," she says. "I think it's my favorite of the look."

Get ready, folks: You're about to do a major double take. Gwyneth Paltrow has gone retro—again!—for the latest installment of her Max Factor campaign, a promotion in which she has channeled icons Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Farrah Fawcett and Madonna as recently as July. The campaign offers a modern take on beauty throughout the decades, although the Marilyn ads feature Gwyneth with the same coy, come-hither expression that made Monroe the iconic image of the '50s—and one of the most memorable and venerated faces in beauty of all time. Photos show Paltrow with tousled platinum waves, a sultry red lip and eye-widening mascara. She sports a peach cardigan and skin-tight, polka...

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Max Factor cosmetics brand and Candice Swanepoel is serving up some sexy looks in the new ad campaign.
The Victoria’s Secret stunner worked with the brand’s Creative Design Director Pat McGrath for she called “the look of the century,” and the results are amazing.
McGrath explained, “This is a very bold, brave, decadent and hedonistic look. There's bold shimmers, lots of color, full blush, glossy lips. This is a really strong couture look that women can take inspiration from.”
“You can take the blush, a bold lip, even use the eyeshadow and just work it as an eyeliner - you can literally break it apart to make the perfect party look for you and if you’re brave, do the whole thing.”...

Polly Bergen: Actress on Richard Nixon's 'enemies list' (image: Polly Bergen publicity shot ca. late 1950s) (See previous article: "Polly Bergen Movies: First U.S. Woman President.") As discussed in the previous post, despite its deceptively progressive premise — the first United States woman president as a palpable reality — Kisses for My President, written by veteran Paramount screenwriter Claude Binyon (Search for Beauty, The Gilded Lily) and newcomer Robert G. Kane (whose sole other movie credit was the poorly received Arnold Schwarzenegger comedy Western Villain), was an unabashedly reactionary, "traditional family values" effort. Ironically, Polly Bergen, for her part, was a liberal-minded, politically active Democrat. At around the time Kisses for My President was released, Bergen, along with Gregory Peck, James Garner, and other Hollywood personalities, publicly came out against California's Proposition 14, a 1964 ballot initiative that would have nullified the Rumford Fair Housing Act, thus paving the way for...

Kit Harington is Sexier Than Ever in Debut Jimmy Choo Ad, Winona Ryder is the New Face of Rag & Bone
It's been a big week for compelling ad campaigns—and it's only Tuesday! First Gisele Bündchen's Balenciaga buzz cut (say that three times fast), then Gwyneth Paltrow's retro-inspired Max Factor campaign, and now Game of Thrones star Kit Harington is steaming up the joint with his latest Jimmy Choo ads. If he hadn't achieved stud status already, the 27-year-old actor makes it official with his new Jimmy Choo gig. Sorry, he's not shirtless in the ads—but Kit still looks off-the-charts hot in a suit. In the photos (which will start popping up in September issues), Kit smolders so hard we're surprised the camera didn't burst into flames. Thankfully, the...

She's a movie star. He's a rock star. And while Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin employed an untraditional term, "conscious uncoupling," in announcing their separation, they will now face the traditional task of dividing their considerable assets. Just how big is their fortune? Estimates vary widely, but Britain's Sunday Times pegged their combined net worth at nearly $120 million in 2012. Both stars made Forbes magazine's most recent Celebrity 100 list: Paltrow, 41, is ranked No. 71, while Martin's band Coldplay landed at No. 14. The hugely popular British rock band has sold more than 60 million albums worldwide, and their last tour, promoting 2012's Mylo Xyloto,...

She commented: "I am so proud of my Emma! Not only is she uniquely beautiful, she's also bright, and I think you will have seen how much she developed throughout the series.

Birthday dame Angelina Jolie is divinely over the top in movies. Let’s reinspect.
Angelina Jolie turns 38 today, and though the woman has had a devastating (and bravely self-disclosed) year of health scares, let’s remember one way in which she’s always managed to heal us: extremely bizarre fashions on film. Here are her five most over-the-top film fashions.
5. Changeling
It was a close tie between The Tourist, Life or Something Like It, and Changeling for fifth place, but I’m happy to give the spot to Clint Eastwood‘s baby mixup drama. For being such a distinct-looking actress, it’s kind of shocking how much Jolie’s appearance can transform. If I didn’t tell you, you might think that was Norah Jones, Marion Cotillard, or Natalie Imbruglia. Admit it. That hat, though — some Little Edie cred going on up in here.

Look, maybe you and your stepson are right and American Idol has jumped the shark. I accept your wrongness/common sense. But if you tuned in last night to the Top 6's "Burt Bacharach/Songs You Wish You Wrote"-themed evening, you can't deny that it delivered everything that has ever mattered about American Idol, including vocal triumphs, ferocious attitude, the dismal failure of a teenage dandy, Randy Jackson's gift for thoughts, 17-year-olds being forced to perform the songs of Jackie DeShannon, and Ryan Seacrest's attempts at empathy. Every time he nervously puts his hand on Lazaro's shoulder, it's like a deleted scene from Speilberg's A.I. is upon us.
Then there's the other emotionally troubled member of the American Idol brain surgeon gallery: Mariah Carey. I've defended her long enough and still believe she delivers an iota's worth of real advice every 15 minutes or so, but man,...
