When James Cameron filmed the first Avatar movie, he was coming off the success of the biggest hit in Hollywood history, Titanic. But the release of Avatar would come 12 years after the release of Titanic, an eternity in Hollywood time. Would Avatar be able to replicate the success of Titanic? Or would it sink without a trace? Of course, 15 years later, we know the answer — it took Titanic’s crown as the top-grossing movie. But when the movie was released, not even Cameron was sure what would happen. As Sam Worthington later told us, nobody who worked on the film could have predicted the incredible success of Avatar. Since making an inauspicious directorial debut with the box office bomb Pirhana 2: The Spawning, everything James Cameron has touched has turned to gold. He’s only made eight feature films since then, yet those films have grossed more than $8 billion worldwide, ranking him behind only Steven Spielberg on the list of the highest-grossing directors. Cameron, who has surpassed the $2 billion mark with each of his last three films — Titanic, Avatar, and Avatar 2: The Way of Water — is currently working on the next two Avatar sequels. Why have Cameron’s films been so successful? He said there’s no secret formula, but believes the best films create human connections. Made in 1997, James Cameron’s Titanic was originally shot before the new 3-D revolution began, but that didn’t stop Cameron and a post-production team from creating a 3-D version, which was released in 2012. And next month, a newly remastered 3-D 4K cut of Titanic will be released in theaters. Since the original film was shot in 2-D, it was a painstaking effort to create the later 3-D releases, and the 2012 release — though impressive-looking — had some glaring imperfections. That’s not the case, however, with Cameron’s Avatar series, which was shot and produced with 3-D in mind. And Cameron says that the latest film, Avatar: The Way of Water, is one that looks amazing in 3-D. (Click on the media bar below to hear James Camreron) https://www.

When a film becomes the top-grossing film of all time, like Avatar did nearly 13 years ago, expectations for a sequel would naturally be high. And when a film was a technologically advanced and as visually striking as Avatar was, that brings another set of expectations into the equation. And, especially given the amount of time between the original and the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, the pressure was on for writer/director James Cameron to deliver. The one thing that made Cameron’s job easier knowing that, when audiences go to the theater to see the new film, they’ll be ready to lose themselves in the Avatar world once again. The re-release of James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar is closing in on 25 million at the box office — respectable for a 13-year-old movie, but a drop in the bucket compared to the film’s overall gross, which was nearly 800 million in the U.S. and almost 3 billion worldwide. Still, with the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, just two months away, Cameron hopes that fans — and a new generation of viewers — will reacquaint themselves with the characters and the story the way it was meant to be seen, on a big screen and in 3-D. Shia Labeouf, Transformers: Dark of the Moon Worldwide Box Office 2011: Us/Canada Lowest Ticket Sales This Century Below is the list of the top ten movies in North America in 2011 in terms of box office receipts (though not necessarily in number of tickets sold). Most of those movies were shown in box-office-inflating 3D and/or IMAX screens. For instance, the top two, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon, received a solid boost from 3D screenings as tickets for those cost anywhere between 25%-50% more than for movies shown in regular format at regular movie theaters. I should add that Brad Bird / Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible IV – Ghost Protocol and Guy Ritchie / Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows aren't included on the list because a large bulk of their total gross came in 2012. And finally, it's worth...

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Transformers: Dark of the Moon Daniel Radcliffe-Ralph Fiennes' Deathly Hallows 2 Shatters International Box-Office Record At no. 2 in the Us/Canada, Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon collected $21.32m, down a hefty 55% from last weekend according to box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Starring Shia Labeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Josh Duhamel, this past weekend Transformers 3 became the first 2011 release to pass the $300m milestone at the domestic box office. Total to date: $302.87m. Worldwide: $762.31m. Cost: $195m. Down a relatively modest 37% — thus holding up better than fellow R-rated comedy Bad Teacher — Horrible Bosses brought in $17.77m. Greeted by wildly mixed reviews [correction: it wasn't exactly "poorly received"], Horrible Bosses stars Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Colin Farrell, and Kevin Spacey. Domestic total: $60.14m. Cost: $35m. Kevin James' "family" comedy Zookeeper — though down only 38% — has thus far fared considerably worse than the R-rated Horrible Bosses, taking in $12.33m on its second weekend out.

Shia Labeouf, Tyrese Gibson, Transformers 3 Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon topped the North American box office for the second consecutive weekend (July 8-10), grossing $47.02 million, down 52% from a week ago, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Featuring Shia Labeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, Patrick Dempsey, John Turturro, and Frances McDormand, Transformers 3 will be passing the $250m milestone in North America some time today, its 12th day out. Second-weekend comparisons to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen are iffy. Revenge of the Fallen's second Saturday — the strongest box-office day of the week — fell on July 4, a notoriously poor day for movie attendance. Revenues were down 40% from the day before, seriously impacting Transformers 2's overall box-office gross for the weekend. As a result, Revenge of the Fallen was down 61% compared to the previous weekend. It's also worth noting that Revenge of the Fallen was coming...

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Patrick Dempsey, Transformers: Dark of the Moon Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon topped the North American box office on Friday, grossing $14.92 million, down 56% from a week ago, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Starring Shia Labeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Josh Duhamel, Transformers 3 passed the $200m milestone in North America on Wednesday. Though still trailing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon will likely pass the $250m milestone by Sunday evening. The latest R-rated comedy to hit North American screens, Horrible Bosses collected $9.92m on opening day. Pundits had been predicting a first weekend hovering between $27m-$30m; that may still happen, depending on how well Horrible Bosses fares on Saturday. For comparison's sake: the Cameron Diaz-Justin Timberlake R-rated comedy Bad Teacher opened with $12.24m and, generally mediocre reviews notwithstanding, went on to gross $31.6m on its debut weekend.

Josh Duhamel, Transformers: Dark of the Moon Transformers: Dark of the Moon collected an estimated $116.4 million in North America over the four-day July 4 weekend, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Total after six days: $181.12m. Directed by Michael Bay, Transformers 3 stars Shia Labeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (replacing Megan Fox), and Josh Duhamel. For comparison's sake: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the much-lambasted second installment in the Transformers franchise, grossed $214.93m (about $225m today) in its first six days in late June — without the assistance of either revenue-boosting 3D ticket prices or the 4th of July holiday. Also, claims that Dark of the Moon is holding up better than Revenge of the Fallen give a warped view of the films' respective box-office figures: Revenge of the Fallen's Day 6, for instance, was a non-holiday Monday; hence its -54% drop-off rate, compared to Dark of the Moon's estimated -38%. Michael Bay, Transformers: Dark of the Moon According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon took in $97.4m this 4th of July three-day weekend — which actually went from Friday, July 1, to Sunday, July 3. That figure places Transformers 3, which stars Shia Labeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (replacing Megan Fox), and Josh Duhamel at the very top of all 4th of July weekends throughout all of film history. That is, if you decide to ignore inflation and 3D surcharges, not to mention the "location" of the 4th of July holiday itself. Dark of the Moon's grosses may have surpassed the $88.12m earned by Spider-Man 2 back in 2004, but the Sam Raimi-Tobey Maguire collaboration sold many more movie tickets: in 2011 dollars, Spider-Man 2 would have grossed about $111.5m — without the revenue-boosting 3D surcharges. Shia Labeouf, John Turturro, Transformers: Dark of the Moon Thanks to a 53% surge on Friday, Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon will likely gross around $170m-175m in its first six days. Six-day estimates had gone down in the past couple of days after Transformers 3 performed much more modestly than its predecessor at midnight screenings and on its first day out. Starring Shia Labeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (replacing Megan Fox), and Josh Duhamel, Transformers 3 collected $32.9m on Friday, July 1, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. In 2009, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was up only 26% on its initial Friday out; even so, it grossed $36.7m — without the aid of 3D surcharges. After three days, Dark of the Moon has brought in $97.58m (including $5.5m from previews). Shia Labeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Transformers: Dark of the Moon Starring Shia Labeouf (looking very macho above), Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (replacing Megan Fox, and looking like your average damsel-in-distress above), and Josh Duhamel, Michael Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon, aka Transformers 3, collected $13.5 million from late-night Tuesday screenings, according to estimates released by Paramount. That amount includes $5.5m from late-night sneak previews at 2,700 3D theaters and $8m from midnight showings at both 3D and 2D houses. For comparison's sake: the original Transformers earned $8.8m (about $9.8m today), while Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen took in $16.6m (about $17.4m today) at preview screenings in 2007 and 2009, respectively. It bears noting that neither Transformers 1 nor Transformers 2 had the advantage of revenue-boosting 3D surcharges (up to 40%); in other words, Dark of the Moon sold considerably fewer tickets than Revenge of the Fallen — and may have sold about as many tickets as the original Transformers.

Chicago – When big-budget films set their sights on being the next Hollywood blockbuster, they’re almost always built on a formulaic groundwork of proven ingredients. While these films often lose points for much of the same and little of the new, plunking a mighty $150 million into the production “Thor” has found a way to be both formulaic and successful.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
“Thor,” which needed a hulking sexpot as its title character, found its quintessential leading man in Chris Hemsworth. Though before “Thor” he wasn’t a Hollywood sensation (you might have only previously glimpsed him in 2009’s “Star Trek”), he will be now.
Most notably in “Thor,” Hemsworth’s “accidental” but entirely on purpose shirtless scene even trumps Taylor Lautner’s memorable chisled-ab scene in “Twilight”. This Hemsworth scene literally causes a roomful of movie watchers – male, female, gay and straight – to gasp for air. Hemsworth’s personal trainer was worth every pricey penny.

For most of us, Memorial Day is the start of summer. But, if you ask a theater owner, the first weekend in May is when Hollywood’s summer starts. After months of mostly duds at the box office, studios start dreaming of $100 million dollar weekends from May until August. And no one owns the start of the Hollywood summer the way Marvel Comics does.

During an artistic output unheralded in the history of pop culture, writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby created many of the entertainment icons of the early 21st century within a brief three-year span (1961–1963) while at Marvel Comics, including the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Iron Man, X-Men, the Avengers and Hulk. Amid this flurry of activity, the duo, with the help of Lee’s brother Larry Lieber, plucked the hammer-wielding Thor, god of thunder and namesake for the fifth day of the week, from Norse mythology. The mingling of Nordic and Marvel comic canons proved very popular, and the blond-haired, muscle-bound deity has remained among the forefront of Marvel’s heroic pantheon for 50 years.

Sam Worthington, Avatar Paul Walker's Takers Beats George Clooney's The American: Box Office After three weekends out, James Cameron's Avatar: Special Edition has yet to reach the $10m mark at the domestic box office. Despite higher 3D/IMAX ticket prices, Avatar has taken in only $9.78m following estimated grosses of $715k this weekend, as per Box Office Mojo. Initially showing at 811 theaters, Avatar is currently playing at only 436 venues. Even so, its per-theater average this weekend was a modest $1,640. Irony or ironies: Avatar, a late 2009 release, is the year's biggest box-office hit — to date, Avatar has grossed $759.54m domestically. Yet, considering the buzz surrounding Cameron's sci-fier a mere six months ago, when 20th Century Fox executives were complaining there weren't enough 3D screens to accommodate every Pandora fan, this Avatar rerelease has turned out to be one of the year's biggest disappointments. Well we knew as we neared closer to the release of Iron Man 2 that we would get the first official images of Thor. The studio planned this in order to counter attack any spy photos that may emerge as to have everyone see the first look of Hemsworth as the titular hero in a god light.
Yahoo! Movies! has debuted the first image of Hemsworth as the Norse God in Kenneth Branagh’s live action take on the hammer-swinging hero based on the Marvel comics character.
I am impressed with the look though the image isn’t best in giving us a full look at his Norse garbs but it has the necessary value of getting all of us worked up and talking about it.
Let the comments begin! Your thoughts comic book fans?

James Cameron, Sigourney Weaver on the set: Avatar (Mark Fellman / 20th Century Fox) At this year’s Oscars, James Cameron’s Avatar tied with Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker. Each film received nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. That makes Avatar one of the two top contenders for the Best Picture Oscar, right? Well, think again. Yes, Avatar received a total of nine nominations — but not for best screenplay. Whether due to karma or just poor writing skills, Cameron was also bypassed for his Titanic screenplay 11 years ago. (Must be karma, considering the kind of stuff that gets nominated in the Academy’s writing categories.) Something else about Avatar’s Oscar prospects: the film was also ignored [...]...

Giovanni Ribisi, Sigourney Weaver in James Cameron’s Avatar (Mark Fellman / 20th Century Fox) Avatar: #26 at the Domestic Box Office (Inflation Adjusted) If 3D/IMAX premium surcharges were factored in, Avatar would be way further down Box Office Mojo’s inflation-adjusted chart. As I’ve already explained in the comments section of a previous Avatar post, the 3D/IMAX surcharges can add quite a bit to Avatar’s overall take: somewhere between 25-30 and 40 percent. Other movies, including the vast majority of recent releases, didn’t (and still don’t) have that sort of advantage — certainly not to Avatar’s extent (80% of its domestic gross has come from 3D and/or IMAX screenings). So, even if you go for the lower [...]...

Giovanni Ribisi, Sigourney Weaver in Avatar (Mark Fellman / 20th Century Fox) James Cameron’s Avatar has grossed an estimated $41.3 million over the weekend, a modest 17.9 percent drop from a week ago, according to figures provided by Box Office Mojo. Its average per theater was a great $12,572 (last week: $14,173); among the weekend’s top 12 films, the nearest competitor was the post-apocalyptic Denzel Washington vehicle The Book of Eli, with $10,162 on its opening weekend. As predicted, Avatar has passed George Lucas‘ 1977 sci-fier Star Wars at the domestic box office. Avatar’s total domestic gross to date stands at $491.7m vs. Star Wars‘ $460.9m. Cameron’s film is now the third biggest blockbuster ever at the domestic [...]...

Avatar may be the front-runner for Best Picture at the Oscars this year — it’s already been nominated for Golden Globes, Directors Guild, and Producer Guild awards — but director-producer James Cameron isn’t so sure he’d be a welcome sight on the red carpet. “After jumping up and making a fool of myself with my acceptance speech [for Titanic], I’m sure nobody wants to see me at the Academy Awards again,” he says. “Or maybe they want me to win again to see if I can make an even bigger fool of myself.” Even if he doesn’t take home a statue,...

Sam Worthington, Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore in Avatar (Mark Fellman / 20th Century Fox) Right-wingers criticize it for its anti-militaristic and anti-imperialism stance. The politically correct accuse it of being racist. Anti-smokers cry foul because of a chain-smoking character. And now comes the Vatican media accusing it of promoting paganism and nature worship. Really, you can’t please everyone, but this? In addition to referring to Avatar as "bland" and "sappy," L’Osservatore Romano complained in its review that James Cameron’s sci-fier "gets bogged down by a spiritualism linked to the worship of nature," while Vatican Radio pointed out that the film "cleverly winks at all those pseudo-doctrines that turn ecology into the religion of the millennium," adding that "nature [...]...

Giovanni Ribisi, Sigourney Weaver in Avatar (Mark Fellman / 20th Century Fox) James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar earned another $6.9 million at the Us/Canada box office on Wednesday, following a minor 5.7 percent drop from the day before, according to Box Office Mojo. To date, Avatar has earned $374.4m at the domestic box office. It’s now the #12 highest-grossing movie of all time. When Thursday figures are added in, Avatar will have overtaken The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($377m) and perhaps even Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith ($380.2m). Partly thanks to inflation and 3D/IMAX surcharges, Avatar is now the 14th highest grosser of all time, ahead of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993, $357.1m) and edging closer and closer to Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ (2004, $370.8m). I've been using the phrase "my mom" a lot lately in blog posts because we spent two weeks together over the holidays during which we saw four films. But allow me one more. After we saw Avatar, my mom immediately wanted to know Sam Worthington's name and suddenly paid attention to the Clash of the Titans poster hanging in the theater lobby. Is it possible that Avatar's billion-dollar appeal will help make the 33-year-old Aussie a sex symbol for all ages? Reached this afternoon, while she was getting her hair colored, my 62-year-old mother said yes. True, she...
