Before Daniel Craig was James Bond, he starred in Layer Cake, a stylish crime drama directed by Matthew Vaughn and based on the novel of the same name by author J.J. Connolly. It’s not a film about a carefully crafted cake with multiple layers and delicious filling. Vaughn’s Layer Cake refers to the layers (or levels) anyone in business goes through while rising to the top of the food chain.
Craig plays an unnamed man in the film known as Xxxx, while Vaughn’s interpretation of the story differs from Connolly’s novel. In the book, Xxxx and his hired gunman wait in a park to kill the off-screen antagonist, Dargon. While in the garden, they shoot an American tourist, mistaking him for Dragon. Initially, the movie would have done the same, but Sony Pictures was uncomfortable with killing an American and asked for the scene to be changed.

It’s unsurprising the actor has yet to direct another film after giving so much to this blistering debut, acted at full tilt by a remarkable cast
Twenty-five years ago, Gary Oldman opened an artery of anguish with his brilliant, wrenchingly emotional debut as writer-director inspired by his own father and his childhood in south London, positioned between Terence Davies and Martin Scorsese. The title conveys with horrible force both violence and the cost of violence. “Nil by mouth” is what you see over an intravenously fed patient’s hospital bed – and yet the phrase is also a metaphor for the dad’s dysfunction, the walled-off emotional aridity; nil by mouth, no kissing, no talking, nothing.
It is an urban pastoral and social-realist tragedy. Watched again now, you can appreciate how formally accomplished it is, how emotionally extravagant, and acted at full tilt by a remarkable cast. Ray Winstone is Ray,...

"What's the point in having talent if you keep it for yourself." Conduit Presents has released an official US trailer for a film titled The Break, also known as just Break when it was first released in the UK last year. An inner-city kid and gifted pool player named Spencer, wasting his talents on crime, gets in over his head until a chance encounter with a stranger presents him with an opportunity to turn his life around. But is it too late? He'll only succeed if he can break away from his biggest problem: himself. The Break stars Sam Gittins, Rutger Hauer, Jamie Foreman, David Yip, Adam Deacon, and Luke Mably. This is a very strange trailer, but perhaps there's something worthwhile in this. Not often we get billiards films anymore. Here's the official US trailer (+ new poster) for Michael Elkin's The Break, direct from YouTube: Spencer (Sam Gittins), a gifted pool player,...

There’s a sweet message at the heart of “The Bromley Boys” about finding the heroism in mediocrity, thought it’s one not best served by the film being entirely mediocre itself. Adapted from a sepia-tinted memoir by British author Dave Roberts — detailing the childhood origins of his obsession with the consistently second-rate Bromley soccer team — Steve Kelly’s lightweight film spins allegedly true events into the stuff of pure sitcom: affable enough, but so glibly inauthentic as to make “Bend It Like Beckham” look like cinéma vérité by comparison. It’s curious how the world’s most popular sport maintains such a thin roster of truly classic movies in its honor; that is unchanged here.
Perhaps ongoing “Game of Thrones” mania is to credit for a belated, somewhat surprising U.S. release for “The Bromley Boys,” a year after it failed to score on home turf: It’s led...

Rutger Hauer will play an old-time gangster in “Break,” a London- and Beijing-set movie about an up-and-coming snooker player. The picture will also feature cameos from some of the sport’s big-name players, including Ireland’s Ken Doherty, China’s Liang Wenbo, and Britain’s Jack Lisowski.
The “Break” producers have teamed with world snooker’s official association. They will film scenes at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, which is considered the home of professional snooker. The climax of the film is set during the World Snooker Championship final, which takes place at the venue.
Hauer is Ray, owner of a run-down snooker hall and an old school villain. Sam Gittins (“The Smoke”) has the lead role and plays Spencer Pryde, a kid from a rough neighborhood who is wasting his snooker talent and getting dragged into crime. Simon Rumley (director of Red, White & Blue, Fashionista & Crowhurst) has begun a six week shoot on the brutal gangster thriller Once Upon a Time in London – for Gateway Films – which dramatises the violent reign of two of London’s most notorious gangsters, Billy Hill (Leo Gregory) and Jack ‘Spot’ Comer (Terry Stone), charting the legendary rise and fall of a nationwide criminal empire that lasted until the mid-fifties and which paved the way for the notorious Kray Twins and The Richardsons.
Director and co-writer Simon Rumley commented:
Having spent the last decade or so writing and directing thematically disparate but collectively extreme dramas, it makes absolute sense for me to progress to the gangster genre where love, lust, greed, paranoia, betrayal and violence are every day occurrences. 2016 was a great year for Zackary Adler. The New York born director has become a sort of a cult figure amongst fans of gritty British gangster movies; a genre which despite racking up hit after hit has until now remained on the fringes of the British film industry.
After the record-breaking success of his recently released films Rise of Krays (2015) and The Fall of The Krays (2016), Adler has also just finished directing the third instalment and prequel to Rise of the Footsoldier , a franchise based on real life events surrounding the Rettendon Triple Murders, better known as The “Range Rover murders”. The film will be released by Signature Entertainment later this year. And if that wasn’t enough, Adler is also about to start shooting the third instalment of his Krays franchise, titled The Krays And The Mafia.

EastEnders turns 30 years old this week and it’s the prerogative of a Doctor Who fan to somehow make it all about us.
It’s true that Doctor Who and EastEnders have quite a fair bit in common, though. UK cinema in 2015 has plenty to recommend it. Here are 36 UK films of all genres to look forward to this year…
Dig past the litterfall of Kray Brothers biopics and tales of nubile teens on camping trips gone wrong, and you’ll unearth plenty for the UK film industry to boast about in 2015. From sci-fi romps and thrillers like Robot Overlords and Ex Machina to dramas like High-Rise, comedies like War On Everyone, spy flicks like Spectre and kids’ films like Bill, there’s no shortage of inventive, highly promising cinema coming from these isles.
We’ve included a few choice co-productions in 2015’s pick of the year’s most interesting-looking pictures, which bolsters our list in both size and breadth (and mostly means we Brits can claim partial credit for ace-sounding dystopian flick The Lobster).
In alphabetical order then, here are the 36 UK (or UK-ish) movies we’re excited about seeing this year…...

With November Man out, excitement for Pierce Bosnan’s return to spying is at an all-time high for many James Bond fans. November Man, based on the seventh installment of Bill Granger’s book series called There Are No Spies, is about ex- CIA agent Peter Devereaux (Pierce Bosnan). While living a quiet life in Switzerland, Devereaux is ejected out of retirement for one last mission. Although the concept of the “one last mission/job” is not a new concept for Hollywood, it definitely has its place in cinema history, branching out to a wide range of reasons why our beloved characters are being pulled back into their past lives. From a retiree’s last gig, to the bad-boy-gone-good-and-then-bad-again mission, to the revenge premise, mythology of the ex-professional can surely delight and excite us to champion our heroes for one last fight. Here are scenes from ten incredible “one last job” films,...

After last week’s news about Netflix securing The Blacklist for a record fee, a similar story came to light this week concerning the pre Batman prequel series Gotham. Now rather than getting it day and date after Us broadcast as per Breaking Bad and From Dusk Till Dawn, Gotham’s entire run will just arrive on Netflix after it’s finished its TV broadcast. Worse news is that this means you have to wait for Channel 5 to get their finger out and schedule it on one of their three channels and then muck it around the schedule just to confuse you further and for it to finish its run there. Kind of takes the wind out the sails doesn’t it? I wouldn’t expect to see Gotham on Netflix until this time next year at best but we will see.

'EastEnders' bosses have hinted Alfie and Kat Moon will get back together. Kat Moon will confront her demons on 'EastEnders'. EastEnders actor Shane Richie has revealed that he and co-star Jessie Wallace "loved" filming the bedsit scenes in the soap. Last night's episode saw Richie's Alfie confronting his wife Kat (Wallace) in her secret bedsit, before eventually discovering that she was having an affair with Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman). Richie explained that filming the scenes with Wallace in such close proximity was very "claustrophobic". "It's very rare you get a 15-minute scene with two people in one room," he told BBC News. "We don't usually get a chance to rehearse but for this particular episode we spent a lot of time - myself and Jessie and the director [Karl Nielson] - just going over stuff, finding out where the emotions were, who was the victim, who was on the offensive, who was on the defensive, and that's (more)...

EastEnders star Shane Richie has reflected on last night's conclusion to the long-running Kat Moon affair storyline. Last night's episode revealed that Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman) has been having a secret affair with Alfie's wife Kat (Jessie Wallace) over the past six months. Richie stated that he and his fellow actors did not know of the culprit's identity for a long time. "We always knew there was going to be a pay-off and we knew it was going to be one of five," he told the BBC's EastEnders blog. "When we ruled out Chucky Venn (Ray) and Steve John Shepherd (Michael), it was only one of three, and for a long time we genuinely didn't know. I'm not even sure if the culprit knew. "So it was interesting to play for me as an actor. I loved it because Alfie's not supposed to know. But of course (more)...

Although Kat was reluctant to divulge any information, Alfie soon discovered that her mystery man was one of the Branning brothers when he caught a glimpse of the tenancy agreement that had been left behind at the bedsit. Over at the Queen Vic shortly afterwards, Alfie furiously confronted the Branning siblings and eventually came to the conclusion that Max was the guy in question. EastEnders villain Derek Branning has become the bookies' top suspect in the mystery surrounding his own death. Fans know that Derek will lose his life at Christmas, but show bosses have kept tight-lipped over whether a murder, suicide, accident or natural causes will lead to his passing. Bookmaker William Hill has now made Derek (Jamie Foreman) the 9/2 favourite in its 'Who killed Derek?' betting, believing that the bad boy taking his own life is the most likely outcome. William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly commented: "There are a number of storylines unravelling in which Derek could be involved, and it may all get too much on Christmas Day."
