2011 was a year that saw Matt Damon in a surprising number of releases, and it may be remembered as the year he (and his films) didn’t manage nearly the level of credit they deserve. Though The Adjustment Bureau was received positively, by the end of the year it seemed that most had forgotten about it. The same is true of Contagion, although you’ll find that one on some lists of the best of the year. Margaret, in the category of “finally released films” was a hit with many critics, but most among the general public never even heard of it.
And then there’s We Bought a Zoo. Even with Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson starring, and Cameron Crowe directing, the film’s theatrical run, despite making a solid showing in ticket sales, seemed to fizzle out, and certainly didn’t have people talking nearly as much as I expected.

After a six-year break from feature filmmaking, director Cameron Crowe returns to the multiplex in a big way this December with 'We Bought a Zoo.' The film -- which had a successful sneak preview over Thanksgiving weekend -- stars Matt Damon as a widower who decides the best way to get his young family over the traumatic experience of losing the woman they love is to buy a rundown zoo in the California countryside. Heartwarming and sweet (without being maudlin), 'We Bought a Zoo' is poised to be one of the family films of choice this holiday season.
In this exclusive first clip, zookeeper Kelly Foster (Scarlett Johansson) questions Damon's character, Benjamin Mee, about his motives for purchasing the zoo -- a scene which underscores the film's message of adventure with two simple words: Why not?

Cameron Crowe's We Bought a Zoo has a bubble gum, after school inanity to it that makes it rather inconsequential. In telling the true story of a father that has just lost his wife to cancer and is left to raise his young daughter and teenage son, Crowe and Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) have adapted Benjamin Mee's book of the same name into a modestly budgeted Hallmark Channel movie.
To boil it down, We Bought a Zoo plays like a feature film version of an Apple iPhone commercial, mixing music from Bob Dylan, a unique score from Jonsi of the Icelandic experimental band Sigur Ros, cleverly scripted dialogue and a cast that inhabits this world with relative ease. It's catchy, you smile, you think you like it and it's tolerable, but the more it wears on the less interested you become, realizing each passing minute...

"Damn you, Spielberg, for getting me choked up with your Au Hasard Blockbuztar," tweets Aaron Hillis. Search for "War Horse" on Twitter and you could spend quite a while combing through the results before you'll find one that doesn't mention tears, weeping or outright blubbering. Though it doesn't open until Christmas Day, Steven Spielberg's War Horse is being shown to the media and industry now because, suggests Anne Thompson, the New York Film Critics Circle, like a state eager to draw early attention to its Republican primary, has moved its day of voting to this Tuesday. In other words, the Nyfcc will be announcing its awards for the best film of the year, performances and so on, with a full month of 2011 yet to go.
But at Deadline, Pete Hammond suggests that the "unusual strategy" Dreamworks and distributor Disney are pursuing isn't hinging on a single band of critics.

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for "We Bought a Zoo", a dramedy directed by Cameron Crowe and starring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning, Thomas Haden Church, Colin Ford and Patrick Fugit. The film stars Matt Damon as husband and father Benjamin Mee, who uses his life savings to buy a run-down rural zoo that's in danger of being closed. Johansson plays Kelly Foster, an employee at the zoo who becomes involved with Mee. Given its cushy December 23rd release date Fox clearly has confidence in the film as a possible awards-season contender, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this...

While he’s certainly been keeping busy with his Elton John and Pearl Jam music documentaries, it’s even more heartening to see Cameron Crowe back behind the camera for a film. His latest effort, We Bought a Zoo, has just pushed out its first trailer over at Apple.Adapted from former Guardian journalist Benjamin Mee’s memoir about his family’s purchasing and restoring Dartmoor Wildlife Park, Zoo transplants the story to California and casts Matt Damon as Mee.He’s lost his wife to cancer and is trying to deal with raising two children on his own. When he finds what he thinks is the perfect new home, he realises it comes with a few added quirks: namely, 47 animals, including lions, monkeys and zebras that have to be taken care of. Aided by his brother (Thomas Haden Church), who alternates between a sunny outlook and thinking he’s nuts,...

It seems that each fall Matt Damon has at least two awards contenders in the mix. Last year there was True Grit and Hereafter, with the latter stumbling. This fall he actually has four films hitting theaters. We’ll bypass his voice work in Happy Feet Two and his smaller role in Kenneth Lonergan‘s Margaret to focus on his starring role in Cameron Crowe‘s We Bought a Zoo and his key part in Steven Soderbergh‘s virus thriller Contagion.

A number of new stills from "We Bought a Zoo" have been unveiled. Coming out via USA Today, two of them offer a closer look at Matt Damon as Benjamin Mee. One sees him facing off elderly tiger Spar, while another one has him holding a poster of the zoo's grand reopening that features his son's drawing.
Another photo gives a first look at Scarlett Johansson as Kelly Foster, who grew up with the zoo and stayed on as a caretaker. Joining her in the image is Maggie Elizabeth Jones playing a motherless girl named Rosie who, according to director Cameron Crowe, brings out the maternal side in Kelly.
USA Today also let out a composite group photo along with the stills. Putting together Damon, Johansson and Jones with other cast members, it displays Thomas Haden Church as Benjamin's accountant brother, Duncan; Colin Ford as Benjamin's son, Dylan; Angus MacFadyen...
