The rain stayed away from Santa Monica Beach on Sunday (February 25) as Past Lives was named best film and Celine Song best director at the 39th annual Spirit Awards.
While the legacy studio and streamer contenders have dominated much of the big-ticket awards shows this season like Saturday night’s SAG Awards, last weekend’s Baftas, the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, this was a good opportunity for the Oscar-nominated A24 romance and Song to earn gongs for a film which has done well among critics groups since its world premiere at Sundance just over one year ago.

Spoiler Alert: This column contains spoilers from “Dig,” the series finale of FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” now streaming on Hulu.
Death has always loomed over “Reservation Dogs,” the coming-of-age comedy that concludes its run on FX this week. When the show began, its teenage protagonists were still actively mourning their friend Daniel (Dalton Cramer), who died by suicide a year prior. Over three seasons, the show emphasized its namesake foursome were not alone in their grief. Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs) doesn’t remember much about her late mother, but her mother’s friends do; when Elora’s grandmother Mabel (Geraldine Keams) passes away, her final hours bring the entire small, Native town of Okern, Oklahoma into their home. Some of the series’ most memorable characters, like warrior William Knifeman (Dallas Goldtooth), are themselves no longer living — they’re spirits who return to counsel those left behind.

‘Reservation Dogs’ Series Finale: Sterlin Harjo On Saying Goodbye With Love, Legacy & “Fekke Hvmken”
Spoiler Alert: This article contains detains of the Reservation Dogs series finale “Dig,” which dropped late last night on Hulu.
“I’m leaving,” Elora (Devery Jacobs) tells Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai) in the Reservation Dogs series finale as they sit before the coffin of Old Man Fixico (Richard Ray Whitman). “It’s awesome … I’m proud of you,” Bear replies after a pause, giving his best friend his support. “I mean, of course, I’m going to miss you,” he adds, as the duo tell each other with tears how much they truly love each other after all they have been through over the show’s three seasons.
“You’re reminded we’re a community, and we take care of each other, and that is something that I’ve always wanted to show in this show,” co-creator Sterlin Harjo says of the finale, the funeral and the series itself. As he...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Reservation Dogs Season 3, Episode 10, “Dig.”] Reservation Dogs may only feature 28 episodes, but its impact will far exceed its runtime. This is especially true after delivering a delightfully satisfying conclusion to a flawless three-season run with the moving finale installment, “Dig.” The episode co-written and directed by series creator Sterlin Harjo follows the Reservation Dogs, Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Elora (Devery Jacobs), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor) as they join their community to bid Old Man Fixico (Richard Way Whitman) farewell. The celebration of life pulls together the aunties, elders, and fan favorites on the fringes (like Kirk Fox’s Kenny Boy) of Okern for a fantastic ensemble episode that places each of the core four characters on their destined paths. Willie Jack kicks off the episode with a visit to her aunt Hokti (Lily Gladstone) who viewers will remember from Season 2’s powerful entry, “Offerings.” Telling Hokti about...

When Mouse Rat sang "Maybe someday we'll saddle up again," this must have been what they meant: famed "Parks and Recreation" mini horse Li'l Sebastian was spotted on the WGA and SAG-AFTRA picket line yesterday, despite having canonically passed away back in 2011. The sweet horsie's return came in the middle of a near-total cast reunion for the beloved NBC sitcom, and was captured for posterity on Jean-Ralphio actor Ben Schwartz's Instagram.
"Lil Sebastian made a rare public appearance to support the #sagaftrastrike #wgastrike alongside some people who understand how amazing he is," Schwartz wrote, sharing photos of a mini horse wearing with a pretty blond mane wearing a purple "#7 Lil Sebastian" jersey.

The producers of “Jury Duty” found Ronald Gladden — the jury foreman unaware that an entire fictional trial was put on for his benefit — via Craigslist. But everyone else in the courtroom was cast through a scripted process, albeit not one that casting director Susie Farris ever used before.
The unconventional hybrid nature of “Jury Duty” led Farris and the show’s producers down a very life-meets-art path to find gifted improvisers who could hit the level of absurdity the show demanded without making Gladden suspicious. Farris began with self-tapes, partly because of Covid-19 restrictions and partly because, in this particular case, improvising a confessional to camera would more accurately reflect the job than reading sides.
“Don’t get me wrong, I really miss the in-person interaction. There’s really nothing like that,” Farris said. “But for this type of thing, [the actors weren’t] having to read lines. They could choose one of the two prompts,...

Writer and creator Sterlin Harjo promised that the Season 3 finale of “Reservation Dogs” would serve as the perfect ending to the FX series on Hulu. It’s a bold claim in a culture that often sees fans ripping finales and their writers apart. But if the first few episodes of Season 3 are any indication, it’s more than likely our beloved Rez Dogs will get as close to perfect as possible.
From the first four episodes of the final season available for review, it’s clear the writers know exactly what the viewers want: Surreal spirits and quirky side characters guiding and challenging the young crew. Storytelling that manages to weave together the silly and absurd with some of the harsh realities Native populations have had to face over generations (the atrocities and aftermath of Indian boarding schools get called out on more than one occasion this season). The official trailer for season three just makes it even more difficult to prepare to say goodbye to FX’s Reservation Dogs. There’s so much story left to tell, but hopefully, the third and final season will give our favorite characters the sendoff they deserve.
Returning to lead the cast in starring roles are Devery Jacobs as Elora Danan, D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai as Bear Smallhill, Paulina Alexis as Willie Jack, and Lane Factor as Cheese. Created by executive producers Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, the final season of the half-hour comedy also features Zahn McClarnon, Gary Farmer, Wes Studi, Kaniehtiio Horn, Sarah Podemski, and Tamara Podemski.
The ensemble also includes Graham Greene, Dallas Goldtooth, Jon Proudstar, Lily Gladstone, Richard Ray Whitman, Kirk Fox, Jana Schmieding, Lil Mike, and FunnyBone.

The Rez Dogs return home for a final confrontation of the soul. FX released the official Reservation Dogs Season 3 trailer on Thursday, teasing the last season of the hit show created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi. The series focuses on Elora Danan (Devery Jacobs), Bear Smallhill (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis), and Cheese (Lane Factor), four Indigenous teens in rural Oklahoma looking for purpose and opportunity in a world that’s often against them.
After spending two seasons gathering funds to travel to California in honor of their dead friend, Daniel (Dalton Cramer), the crew accomplished their mission but needed clarification about their next steps. In the Reservation Dogs Season 3, the foursome returns home. Well, except for Bear, who breaks from the group to embark on a soul-searching journey alongside the spirit of a long-passed warrior (Dallas Goldtooth) and a conspiracy theorist named Maximus (Graham Greene). FX has released its first look at the final season of “Reservation Dogs.” Season 3’s trailer may mark the end of an era for Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi’s dry comedy, but based on the video, this last season also marks the start of something new for its central characters.
Since its premiere in 2021, “Reservation Dogs” has always been about the liminal space between childhood and adulthood. The series started with Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai) forgoing his friends’ plan to ditch the reservation after his persistent Spirit (Dallas Goldtooth) persuaded him to improve his home rather than abandon it. This first trailer hints that the ending of that personal growth is right around the corner.
“The path to healing is often found in opportunities to help others,” Spirit cryptically tells Bear.
Last season ended with these friends stranded in California. Season 3 will pick up as they figure out a way back home.

The Rez Dogs are heading back home for their final hurrah. FX has released the official trailer for the third and final season of “Reservation Dogs,” the acclaimed FX on Hulu dramedy series.
Created by Sterlin Harjo and Taika Waititi, with Harjo serving as the series showrunner, “Reservation Dogs” focuses on four teenagers — Elora (Devery Jacobs), Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Cheese (Lane Factor), and Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) — who were born and raised in a small Indigenous reservation in Oklahoma. The first two seasons of the show focused on the group’s quest to raise money to travel to California, a long-time dream of their dead friend, Daniel (Dalton Cramer). The Season 2 finale saw the crew finally succeed in their goal, making it to the beaches of Los Angeles and saying an emotional goodbye to Daniel.
Their move proves to be temporary, however, as the trailer for Season 3 opens with the foursome traveling back home.

The season follows a jury trial where everyone is an actor except for one jury member, a solar contractor from California named Ronald Gladden, who believes he's taking part in an actual trial.

The reality comedy series “Jury Duty” is an elaborate prank on one normal man, and you’ll want to be in on the joke.
On Tuesday, Amazon released a trailer for the series, which is coming to the free ad-supported service Freevee on April 7. It’s a “docu-comedy” following Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego who thinks he’s taking part in a documentary about an American jury trial, from juror selection through verdict. In reality, it’s all fake, every other participant is an actor, and everything that happens is carefully scripted to make him feel like he’s taking crazy pills.
“Jury Duty” was created by “The Office” veterans Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Who Is America?” producer Todd Schulman is an EP. Cody Heller (“Dummy”) is the showrunner, and Jake Szymanski (“The Package”) is the director.

The creative minds behind The Office set their new docu-style comedy in the courtroom. Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty, which just released a trailer, focuses on 12 jurors…but only one doesn’t realize he’s not sitting on a real jury.
“Jury Duty originated with a question: Was it possible to make a sitcom like The Office about a trial, populate it with brilliant comedic performers, and put a real person at the center of the show who doesn’t realize he’s surrounded by actors?” said executive producer Todd Schulman (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm). “We honestly had no idea, but when we pitched it to Freevee we pretended like it was a sure thing. Thank God we pulled it off.”

“Jury Duty,” the upcoming docu-style comedy series starring James Marsden as himself, explores truths stranger than fiction when one unsuspecting juror is put in a courtroom of actors for a fake case and a faker documentary.
Marsden leads the “Truman Show”-style misadventure, playing a version of himself who tries – and fails – to get out of his civic duty when the judge fails to recognize him as a public figure. In the first trailer for the Amazon Freevee series, which dropped Tuesday, other characters are seen pushing the envelope of what’s acceptable behavior in the literal court of law – while real-life juror Ronald Gladden goes about his duty being none the wiser that everything is staged.

Taika Waititi isn’t lacking for upcoming projects, but the filmmaker behind highly-anticipated titles such as “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “What We Do in the Shadows” Season 3 is closing out 2020 with a final series announcement.
FX Networks revealed earlier in December that Waititi will executive produce “Reservation Dogs,” a half-hour comedy series that, per the network, will follow four Native American teenagers in rural Oklahoma who spend their days committing crime… and fighting it.
The company’s announcement might not have mentioned Quentin Tarantino or “Reservoir Dogs” but the similarities between Waititi’s upcoming series and Tarantino’s first film are readily apparent. The series’ promotional image is a clear throwback to the slickly-dressed criminals in Tarantino’s 1992 feature which also centered on a motley crew of criminals. Also, FX’s upcoming show bares a somewhat similar name to Tarantino’s theatrical debut.
