Out today is the Blu-ray edition of Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season from HBO Home Entertainment.
We previously reviewed the Digital HD version of the season here but there are new elements to consider with the box set.
The vast majority of Digital HD releases do not come with the bonus features, extra, and Easter Eggs we have come to know and love about the disc format. As a result, the Digital HD version is a nice add-on for on-the-go viewing, but the complete immersive experience, the special features add interviews, behind-the-scenes information, commentary, and deleted scenes to enhance your appreciation of the material. This season set, though, does come with some, but all, the extras found on the Blu-ray box set.
This season was a mixed bag with incredibly strong storytelling undercutting its strength by not surprising us. No one, except readers of the novel, expected...

After winning last year's top honor at the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) Awards for Outstanding Achievement, Emmanuel Lubezki has done it again this year. THR reports that last night the Asc Awards handed him the award for his spectacular work on Birdman. Lubezki was up against an impressive array of talent behind the camera that included Roger Deakins for Unbroken, Óscar Faura for The Imitation Game, Dick Pope for Mr. Turner, and Robert Yeoman for The Grand Budapest Hotel. It's just one more award for Birdman as the film still dominates awards season leading up to the Oscars. On the TV side of things, Jonathan Freeman won for episode of a regular series for his work on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," while John Lindley got the award for a TV movie, miniseries or pilot for his work on "Manhattan." In addition, Lawrence Kasdan presented director of photography John Bailey, who...

It was a pretty stellar year once again for cinematography and I don't envy the members of the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) their duty of narrowing it down to the top tier. Last year they didn't even bother narrowing — they settled on a whopping seven nominees. Why not? The more the merrier when the work is this good. No such luck this year, however, as we're back to five. And I must say, with two excellent pieces of work this year, I'm super bummed that Robert Elswit didn't make this list. I would have liked to see Bradford Young get the love, too, but I have no doubt he'll get his laurels in due time. "Birdman," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The Imitation Game" remain strong as the only films so far to pick up nods from all guilds (we'll see how that shifts throughout the day). "The Imitation Game...

The American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) has named its nominees for the organization’s 29th Annual Outstanding Achievement Awards. HBO is the top network contender with three nominations, while Fox and Lifetime each earning two. “Our members had a very difficult time choosing these nominees from such an incredible field of submissions," Asc President Richard Crudo said in a statement. “They have done superlative work in a very challenging medium, and we salute them.” For his work on "Boardwalk Empire’s" final season opener, Jonathan Freeman earned his eighth nomination. The Asc’s press release notes that he has won four Asc Awards for "Game of Thrones" (2014), "Boardwalk Empire" (2012, 2011), and "Homeland Security" (2005), with additional noms for "Taken" (2003), "Strange Justice" (2000) and "Prince Street" (1998). "Gotham" nominee David Stockton previously won for his work on "Eleventh Hour" (2009) and earned nominations for the "Alcatraz" pilot (2013), "Chase" (2012), and the "Nikita" pilot (2011). Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life Following numerous Us-based critics' citations, Emmanuel Lubezki's work on Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life has earned him the American Society of Cinematographers' Award at the Asc's 26th annual awards. The ceremony was held Sunday night at the Hollywood and Highland Grand Ballroom in Los Angeles. An Oscar nominee for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography, The Tree of Life is a complex family drama starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain. The film marked the second time the Mexican-born Lubezki took home the Asc Award; he had previously won for Alfonso Cuarón's Children of Men (2006). An earlier Asc nomination for Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow (1999) preceded Lubezki two victories. Additionally, Lubezki has been nominated for five Academy Awards. Besides his three Asc movies, he was also shortlisted for Cuarón's A Little Princess (1995) and Malick's The New World.
