I Am Number Four failed to succeed at the box office due to its flawed characters, excessive focus on romance, and lack of emphasis on sci-fi elements. A reboot of I Am Number Four could be successful if it embraces the original book's premise, addresses the issues of the first film, and takes creative liberties when necessary. While a reboot or sequel is unlikely due to the disappointing box office performance, other successful book adaptations have received second chances as TV shows, leaving a possibility for I Am Number Four to make a comeback.
Sci-fi book adaptations are often hit or miss, but one series still deserves a movie reboot 12 years after its $150 million box office disappointment: I Am Number Four. In general, science-fiction stories can be difficult to bring to the big screen. Such adaptations need to squeeze a great deal of advanced world-building into a typically short runtime,...

DreamWorks Animation has delivered a Halloween treat: gateway horror series “Fright Krewe” has been renewed for a second season.
Look for the supernatural war brewing in New Orleans to continue when Season 2 comes to Hulu and Peacock in 2024.
“Fright Krewe” is Created and Executive Produced by Eli Roth & James Frey. The series is also Executive Produced by Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco.
In the 10-episode series, ” An ancient prophecy and a Voodoo Queen put misfit teens in charge of saving New Orleans from the biggest demonic threat it’s faced in almost two centuries. But, honestly? Saving the world might be easier than becoming friends.”
The first season of 10 episodes recently debuted on Hulu and Peacock on October 2. In my review, I wrote that the inaugural season “offers enough supernatural charm, heart, and whimsy to endear Soleil and her friends to viewers, hoping to see their ascension to full hero in the future.

Fright Crewe isn't the first all-ages horror story that Eli Roth has ever played with. While 2018’s The House with a Clock in Its Walls felt like Roth's take on a children's fable, Fright Crewe (which he created and executive produced with I Am Number Four author James Frey) takes more cues from the teenage supernatural genre -- at times operating like a fusion of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Power Rangers. Executive produced by Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco, the series may not be breaking new ground, but Fright Crewe's colorful and creepy take on the premise delivers a fun show for older kids.
Fright Crewe focuses on five teenagers in New Orleans: outcast Soleil (voiced by Sydney Mikayala), her former best friend turned popular girl Missy (Grace Lu), Missy's dim-witted boyfriend Stanley (Chester Rushing), Vodou-obsessed Pat (Terrence Little Gardenhigh) and the quiet Maybe (Tim Johnson Jr.). Just in time for Halloween, the fright-fest TV shows just keep coming! And that includes spooky series suited for younger audiences, too — even if Eli Roth is one of the co-creators. Sure, he's helmed some pretty horrifically violent films over the years (Hostel and the upcoming Thanksgiving) but he's also dabbled in kid-friendly material as well (The House with a Clock in Its Walls). More recently, he teamed up with best-selling author James Frey (A Million Little Pieces) to bring a new YA series to Hulu and Peacock this week. Fright Krewe centers on a wise-cracking group of misfit teens in New Orleans who, after a few accidental missteps around the wrong part of town, get caught up in saving their city from an ancient prophecy and evil Voodoo Queen.
Millennials may think of classic series like Recess and Are You Afraid of the Dark? when watching each episode, and that's a good thing.

Fright Krewe draws inspiration from Scooby-Doo and Goosebumps to create a spooky animated series for kids and older viewers alike. Unlike Scooby-Doo, the show features real monsters instead of people in masks, leaning more towards the horror genre like Goosebumps. With a mix of humor and genuine scares, Fright Krewe has the potential to continue the legacies of both Scooby-Doo and Goosebumps for modern audiences.
As he expands his horror work to more family-friendly territory with Fright Krewe, Eli Roth explains how Scooby-Doo and Goosebumps inspired the show. Co-created by the genre vet and I Am Number Four author James Frey, the animated show centers on a group of New Orleans teens who inadvertently awaken an ancient demon and must use the special abilities granted to them by the mystical Loa to stop him. Produced by DreamWorks Animation, Fright Krewe marks a rare dual release across Hulu and Peacock in time for the Halloween season.

From co-creators Eli Roth and James Frey, the Hulu and Peacock series Fright Krewe follows a team of misfit teens – John “Pat” Patterson, Soleil Le Claire, Stanley Rodriguez-Jones, Will “Maybe” Satchel and Missy Dalisay – as they fight to save the city of New Orleans from an ancient demon who feeds on fear. While each high schooler gets a special gift from the Voodoo spirits to help them succeed, they must learn to overcome their own differences and work together, if they’re going to survive the secret supernatural world that’s been real, all along.

Eli Roth and James Frey co-created Fright Krewe as a family-friendly animated horror show centered around a group of teens in New Orleans with special powers. The show has a colorful-yet-gothic animation style and combines heartwarming and terrifying storytelling, appealing to both younger viewers and horror enthusiasts. The creators aimed to authentically depict voodoo religion in a respectful manner and hope for the show's success to continue as a TV series and book series, ultimately leaving it in the hands of the viewers.

The historic city of New Orleans also happens to be one of the most haunted and rich in supernatural folklore. That makes it the perfect setting for “Fright Krewe,” an animated gateway horror series from creators/executive producers Eli Roth and James Frey. The 10-episode inaugural season charms for its adolescent spin on Voodoo, folklore, and a demonic ancient prophecy that’s never quite as scary as high school.
Soleil (Sydney Mikayla) loves New Orleans for its open embrace of all things spooky. That love also means she’s a bit of an outsider at school. Soleil is comfortable as a loner, but that changes when an ancient prophecy gets triggered by the awakening of a dormant demon. Soleil, along with fellow peers Maybe (Tim Johnson Jr.), Missy (Grace Lu), Stanley (Chester Rushing), and Pat (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), is tasked by Loa spirits with the job of saving the city.

A name synonymous with high-quality, popular animation projects, DreamWorks has offered some of the biggest, most successful animated franchises like Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, and many more. While their work has always been praised for creating fantastical worlds using imaginative, immersive animation and covers comedy, adventure, drama, and even action, horror is still uncharted territory for the brand. So, this Halloween season, DreamWorks fulfills that dream of fans and brings you a frightful adventure with Fright Krewe. Created by Eli Roth and James Frey, the all-new animated series is set in New Orleans and follows a group of teens who accidentally awaken an ancient evil spirit and unleash its dark powers. Gifted with magical powers and tasked by a voodoo queen’s spirit to fulfill a prophecy, the misfit "krewe" (archaic French for crew) of saviors must protect their hometown from demons, vampires, and other evil spirits.

Created and Executive-Produced by Eli Roth and James Frey, Fright Krewe is DreamWorks' latest animated series. Focusing on an unlikely group of teenagers with mystical powers and a duty to stop an ancient evil from ripping apart New Orleans, Fright Krewe takes the classic adventure animation dynamics and infuses them with some of the frights and tension that Roth is most famous for. There are plenty of monsters and horrific images, but Roth maintains a consistently appealing edge to the central characters and their stories.
The result is a fun show that serves as a gateway for younger audiences to the horror genre. During an interview with Cbr, Eli Roth discussed how Fright Krewe draws from Voodoo mythology and figures, the importance of authenticity, taking inspiration from previous animated projects, and crafting a series that older horror fans can share with their children.

Eli Roth is looking to make 2023 a prolific year for horror, at least on his terms. In addition to the release of Thanksgiving – which we’ve been waiting to see for more than 15 years now –he is also behind the upcoming animated series Fright Krewe. Now, we have a trailer for that DreamWorks production.
While there is blood, voodoo, the undead, and more in the trailer, that Fright Krewe is an animated series and comes from the company that brought us Shrek and that little boy fishing from the moon shows that Eli Roth is ready to broaden his horror horizons. And whether you like his movies or not, Roth is one of the foremost historians of the genre and does objectively deserve respect in that regard. But can he handle animation?

The first movie was supposed to kick off a brand-new franchise, but will I Am Number Four 2 ever happen? Following the success of the Twilight movies, studios snapped up other young adult book properties they could turn into movie franchises. I Am Number Four arrived in 2011, adapted from the first book in the Lorien Legacies series by James Frey and Jobie Hughes under the pseudonym Pittacus Lore. The movie follows a monstrous alien race hunting down a group of young aliens hiding on Earth, killing them in a specific order. After killing the first three, Number Four becomes the next target, and he has to fight to protect himself.

Genre regular Eli Roth has another horror project coming our way – but this one won’t be nearly as brutal or bloody as the likes of Cabin Fever or Hostel. Instead, it’s some “gateway horror” entertainment that comes in the form of an animated series called Fright Krewe. Said to be aimed at “older children”, the first season of Fright Krewe will consist of ten episodes that will be released through both the Hulu and Peacock streaming services. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
The Wrap reports that Roth has teamed up with Dreamworks and author James Frey to bring this series to the screen – and they also point out that Frey is a rather controversial figure. His books A Million Little Pieces and My Friend Leonard were initially marketed as memoirs, but it was soon revealed that large portions of them were either exaggerated or made up.

Eli Roth is turning his horror eye to the world of animation with a new series Fright Krewe. Coming from Dreamworks, the series is created by Roth and author James Frey, but rather than aiming for Roth’s usual all-out gore-filled R-rated terror, this time around the project is for “older kids.”
There is no way to deny that Dreamworks have become a force to be reckoned with thanks to franchises like How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda and Shrek, but they have never fully embraced anything in the horror genre. So, it seems that is where Roth comes in, but despite his usually sadistic and brutal movie offerings, this time around it appears that he will be toning down his gruesome violence.

Shia Labeouf grew up in front of cameras. The actor made his acting debut at age 12 in an episode of "Caroline in the City" before getting a main role in the Disney Channel sitcom "Even Stevens," which lasted for 65 episodes and a movie. Say what you will about his personal life, his stunts, or his career, but he still was the star of an "Indiana Jones" movie, for better and worse. But before he played Indy's son, he was a child actor, with all the problems that come with the territory.
The reality of child stars is a difficult one, as people like Jennette McCurdy ("iCarly") have reminded us in recent times. Abuse by loved ones and by a cold, calculating industry aren't out of the ordinary, unfortunately, and Labeouf used his own experiences as a child actor to write the pseudo-autobiographical Sundance darling "Honey Boy."

The 16th annual Black List survey was released on Monday, showcasing 80 of the most popular un-produced scripts from up-and-coming screenwriters.
This year’s list was compiled from suggestions of over 375 film executives, who contributed up to 10 feature screenplays that were written in, or somehow uniquely associated with 2020 and will not begin principal photography during the year. Scripts had to receive mentions from at least seven of those executives to be included on this year’s Black List.
The first survey was released in 2005. Since then many of the included scripts have gone on to be produced, often to great acclaim. Among the most notable entries are “Argo,” “Spotlight,” “Juno,” “American Hustle,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” and “The Revenant.” Recent Black List-appearing films include Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 movie “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, which was featured on the 2018 Black List; and Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,...

Agnes Varda is most celebrated as the lovable storyteller of “Faces/Places” and the New Wave auteur behind “Cleo from 5 to 7,” but in 1968, her career took a detour. While husband Jacques Demy was shooting “Model Shop” in Los Angeles, Varda hung around the Bay Area to make two half-hour documentaries about the Black Panther Party and its efforts to free Huey P. Newton from prison.
“Huey” provides a dramatic collection of footage surrounding the campaign to free Newton after he was jailed for allegedly shooting police office James Frey. However, “Black Panthers” digs deeper into the circumstances surrounding the rallies to explore the nature of the Black Panther Party itself.
The result is a sobering account of the group’s activist intent, delivered almost entirely in its own words. Beyond the striking contrast to the vilification of the Black Panther Party in American media at the time, Varda’s absorbing...

A young couple on an awkward first date become counterculture fugitives in this powerful directorial debut
This arresting debut feature from Melina Matsoukas – Grammy-award winning director of Beyoncé’s Formation video, whose television CV includes Master of None and Insecure – puts new twists on familiar outlaw riffs that can be traced back through Badlands and Bonnie and Clyde to À bout de souffle and beyond. Boasting outstandingly empathic performances from dynamite screen presence Daniel Kaluuya (Oscar-nominated for Get Out) and rising star Jodie Turner-Smith, in a career-making first feature lead, it’s an intoxicatingly lawless lovers-on-the-run romance played out against the politically charged backdrop of racially divided modern America.
Shot in a dreamy natural light by Tat Radcliffe, who did such remarkable work on French-Algerian director Yann Demange’s Belfast-set ’71, and sensuously scored by Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange), Queen & Slim immerses its audience in an unfolding road-movie fable. While...

A first date spirals out of control after the pair are pulled over by a racist cop in this sexy, exuberant and anarchic drama
Big, charismatic performances and exuberant energy keep this movie on the road. It’s a serio-comic Bonnie-and-Clyde adventure, written by Lena Waithe and James Frey (still notorious for his faux memoir A Million Little Pieces) and directed by former music video specialist Melinda Matsoukas.
Daniel Kaluuya brings his seductive air of politely quizzical irony to the role of Slim, a guy who has managed to get a Tinder date with someone way out of his league. This is a beautiful, smart lawyer named Queen, played by Jodie Turner-Smith, who is richer and taller than he is – though this latter disparity is never remarked on – and only went out with him on a whim because his profile picture was so appealingly pathetic. Driving her home after their highly uncomfortable dinner,...

Aaron, 29, and Sam Taylor-Johnson, 52, are no strangers to working together, having met making Sam’s directorial debut Nowhere Boy in 2009 — but adapting James Frey’s controversial 2003 book A Million Little Pieces marked challenging new territory for the married couple.
The film adaptation of Frey’s addiction memoir, which he later admitted to partly fabricating, sees Aaron go to some very dark places to play a young drug-addled writer as he undergoes a grueling two-month detox program.
Below are excepts from People’s conversation with the pair, who wed in 2012 and have two daughters together now, in addition to two from Sam’s previous marriage.

The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.
Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.

Even if you haven’t actually read “A Million Little Pieces,” you’ve likely heard of it. A runaway bestseller and Oprah’s Book Club selection first released in 2003, James Frey’s purported memoir became a literary scandal when it was revealed to have been largely fabricated; the ensuing controversy saw Random House offer refunds and Oprah excoriate Frey on live television.
Sam Taylor-Johnson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have made a film adaptation of the book well over a decade later, collaborating on the script with her behind the camera and him in front of it. To say that the filmmakers didn’t strike while the iron was hot would be an understatement, but the film isn’t entirely without its merits.

During the ensuing fallout once James Frey’s memoir A Million Little Pieces was exposed as a fabrication well beyond his statement admitting to having altered “small details” of his past, it was discovered that the author had tried getting it published as fiction to no avail. Random House, the place that ultimately printed it and watched its ascent to the number one bestseller slot thanks to a coveted spot on Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club list, was supposedly one of the establishments that rejected it back then too. The reason is simple: nothing that happens is unique to what we’ve already read or seen before countless other times. What finally made it worthwhile was the veracity it couldn’t uphold. Cliché can be forgiven if born from truth. This wasn’t.

For over a decade, the deceptions and fallacies driving the “memoir” from which Sam Taylor-Johnson’s A Million Little Pieces is based have been well-documented and well-scrutinized. Nevertheless, author James Frey has been awarded an onscreen presentation which, with the exception of a piddling, but apt Mark Twain quote – “I’ve lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened” – pardons his deceitful intent and inserts itself into the growing pool of films which attempt to explore the horrendous consequences and gripping immobility caused by drug addiction.
This foundation of falsehoods may lend itself very heavily to the film’s own unscrupulous experience; buoyed heavily by rehashed struggles, its overall unoriginality is only occasionally dampened by the wholly dedicated performance from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the director’s co-writer and husband. He plays the James Frey that the mischievous source author wanted people to come to know. Following an explosive opening,...

On the surface, a film hyped as a “black ‘Bonnie and Clyde'” written and directed by first-time feature filmmakers, might be considered a less attractive risk to financiers and distributors, especially at the studio level, even in today’s climate of content excess to meet growing demand.
But for writer Lena Waithe and director Melina Matsoukas, who are also producers on the project, the process of packaging “Queen & Slim” was more seamless than usual.
“We didn’t have to chase anyone because they chased us,” Waithe said of the project. Let’s start with the build of it all: The pic’s official weekend came in at $130.2M, which as we’ve been sayin’ is the best animated pic launch ever in November. Today, with 41% of K-12 schools out and 14% of colleges, I understand Monday will deliver around $16M for the sequel directed by Jennifer Lee- and Chris Buck. By the end of Thanksgiving, which will see business during the evening shows after dinner, Frozen 2 per industry estimates should stand at $200M stateside; that’s bolstered by all schools being off on Thursday and Friday. Don’t forget, Black Friday is one of the most lucrative moviegoing days of the year. Tack on a second estimated weekend of $84M, -35%, and Frozen 2 could climb to $284M in 10 days.
