Kevin Hart, known for starring in comedic films, has taken his fan base by surprise with his latest film! The actor has recently branched out by moving beyond just comedies, which have so far served as the backbone of his acting career. Although films like The Upside and The Man From Toronto have had Hart before in slightly less comedy-centric roles, the actor-comedian has never before starred in a film where his role as the lead marked a shift as significant as Ryan Reynold’s Magnet S. Johnson in 6 Underground. Directed by F.Gary Gray, and written by Daniel Kunka, Hart’s...

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at a few music videos by director F. Gary Gray. When F. Gary Gray made Straight Outta Compton, it was the most obvious choice possible, as Gray has worked extensively with members of the rap group N.W.A, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre especially. His first big breakout as a music video director was the video for Ice Cube's It Was A Good Day (see below). It is a fairly literal music video, where we do see everything that Ice Cube describes play out on screen. The description of a good day, by Ice Cube standards, is all about having a lot of hedonistic fun,...

Kevin Hart just can't seem to stop making stuff. The comedian can be found everywhere right now, from his Peacock talk show to his standup specials, and of course, Netflix. The biggest current streaming platform has hosted many a Hart-led project in recent years, and most of them have kind of come and gone without too much fanfare. Which is a shame because, at one point, the man convinced the great Wesley Snipes to appear alongside him in "True Story," a limited series partly based on Hart's own experiences. "True Story" topped the Nielsen streaming chart but, as the Chicago Tribune surmised, it sadly "lack[ed] any depth beyond what Snipes is bringing to it."
Now, Hart's at it again, this time with a new film helmed by "Straight Outta Compton" director F. Gary Gray that looks ... similarly kind of ok. In late 2023, the "Lift" trailer arrived, promising a $500 million...

In the latest Netflix film ‘Lift’, the energetic world of heist films finds a refreshing break from clichés with the captivating and authentic performance of Úrsula Corberó. As Camilla, the skilled wheel woman with a penchant for piloting private planes, Corberó brings a unique blend of youthful energy and mature dedication to her role. The true magic, however, lies in the unexpected chemistry that developed naturally among the cast, transcending differences in personality, background, and culture.
In ‘Lift’, Camilla (played by Úrsula Corberó) finds herself faced with the task of flying a private plane as part of the crew’s elaborate plan to intercept a jet carrying gold without alerting air traffic control. Despite the immense pressure, Camilla rises to the challenge, showcasing her character’s determination and skill.
When asked about the strong bond between the cast members, Úrsula Corberó credits it to the natural chemistry that unfolded during the production.

When “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) opened on Christmas Day, it grossed over $18 million, fueled by marketing campaign that focused on group sales to attract its core audiene. Its total was $40 above what “Les Miserables” did on December 25, 2012 (its opening day) before it grossed nearly $150 million in the U.S./Canada.
Unfortunately for the musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel (and Steven Spielberg’s 1985 movie), the operation was a success but the patient did less well. Through three weeks of play, despite an A Cinemascore suggesting strong audience response, it has grossed only $58 million, barely three times its opening day. The recent weekend, its third, took in under $2 million after losing almost two-thirds of its theaters.
On Tuesday, after 22 days in theaters, it will become the first holiday release to reach home audiences on PVOD (at $19.99 to rent). Perhaps it can find greater success there.

Gary Gray, the Netflix film Lift revolves around a group of thieves who join hands with Interpol to get immunity for their past crime, but to do that they have to steal half a billion dollars worth of gold from a flying airplane without being caught by the owner of the gold, who is surprise surprise the bad guy. Thanks to the success of billion dollar brands "G.I. Joe" and "Transformers", Paramount continues developing Hasbro Studio's "M.A.S.K.", aka 'Mobile Armored Strike Kommand', to be directed by F. Gary Gray from a screenplay by Chis Bremner, described as "a contemporary subculture movie with a youth empowerment angle":
"...'Matt Trakker' and his allies battle massive mutated creatures in the bowels of the Earth as an internal power struggle threatens to tear the 'M.A.S.K.' team apart. But if M.A.S.K. survives the monsters, can they survive each other?..."

Lift by F. Gary Gray is streaming on Netflix, and it boasts a great cast, which is perhaps the reason you gave the film a chance. Now, the film doesn’t have the freshness that one expects from a Gray film, nor is there any intent to produce a mind-bending heist thriller. So what are we left with then? Another ‘international project’ Netflix film where talents from around the globe are hired to ‘mix’ things up, and one can identify their regional performers and hoot for them if one isn’t not getting engaged by the plot. But I don’t think movies work like that. It’s not a spectator sport where one can cheer for favorite players. It’s music; the melody, the notes, the crescendo, and all that very nuanced stuff has to work for us to enjoy the piece. But let’s say this particular film...

Lift, a thrilling heist film currently streaming on Netflix, has been directed by F. Gary Gray. The film stars famous faces like Ursula Corbero, Kevin Hart, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and a host of other skilled actors. Much like the concept of the Spanish series Money Heist (2017), Lift focuses on a gang of robbers trying to steal expensive artifacts and sell them in the black market. The team is hell-bent on gaining the right price for a piece of art from the dark web rather than just letting it be sold in any ordinary auction. It is their teamwork that helps them. They managed to succeed in their international art heists, and the expertise of every member adds value to the team. The wonderful cast of the film could, however, not stop the film from having an inadequate plot! Abby, the Interpol agent, joins the team for an unexpected heist to take...

Kevin Hart has a very lucrative proposition for you. The multi-hyphenate comedy star is in the market for a few recruits. Anyone interested in stealing about 500 million dollars’ worth of gold? No pressure.
In the new film from director F. Gary Gray, a band of expert criminals is recruited to prevent a terrorist attack by doing what they do best — robbing the rich. It’s a simple Lift, nothing complicated. Other than the fact that the heist will take place on a plane in mid-flight. Call it some unexpected turbulence.
For Hart, Lift was an opportunity to stretch his wings (pun intended) — it’s a more dramatic role than the comedy superstar is typically known for. “Taking on the role of an action hero and heist boss like Cyrus has been a non-stop thrill...

Twenty years after remaking The Italian Job as a slice of pleasant (if disposable) studio gloss, F. Gary Gray has gone ahead and remade it again for the age of Netflix streaming content. Which might be a nicer way of saying the streaming service’s new weekend release of Lift is another harmless, unthreatening time-filler intended to be watched with a second screen in your hand or folded laundry in your lap.
Once again revolving around an affable assemblage of movie stars (Kevin Hart subbing in for Mark Wahlberg as the miscast straight man) and character actors who compose a crew of thieves out “to do a job” in Venice, Lift is designed to faintly echo older, better movies you’ve seen before, including from the director’s own back catalog. It’s junk you’re expected to forget while the thing is still buffering.
But that doesn’t mean...

Review: The entire plot of the Quibi/Roku series Die Hart hinges on Kevin Hart wanting to break out of comedy roles so he can be taken seriously as an action hero. F. Gary Gray‘s latest Netflix heist film is coming tomorrow and for the people who are excited about film Lift, CinemaBlind is here to watch and judge the upcoming film in advance for you. Starring Kevin Hart in the leading role, the film revolves around a group of master thieves whom Interpol catches at the beginning of the film, but they are offered full immunity and in turn, they will have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist.
Lift is another one of Netflix’s blockbuster cinema like what they tried to do with Ryan Reynolds‘ 6 Underground and Red Notice, but the good thing here is that it is better than both of those films but it is also nowhere near the great heist film like Ocean’s Eleven or Gary Gray’s own The Italian Job.

After parodying his attempts to become an action-movie star in the Quibi/Roku short film series Die Hart (later compiled into a Amazon Prime feature), Kevin Hart goes for the gold in the genre and attempts to do the real thing in Lift, an absurdly ridiculous, over the top but still entertaining heist movie that strains credibility at every turn — but who cares because it’s got Hart.

Lift’s Cyrus Whitaker (Kevin Hart) is a master of the heist, a globe-trotting rapscallion who steals from the rich and gives to, well, other rapscallions. Director F. Gary Gray knows something about the subject. Over the course of his decades in show business, the Friday filmmaker has now made three heist films. In the ’90s landmark Set It Off, the target is banks in Los Angeles;in 2003’s slick remake The Italian Job, the loot is in Venice. And now there’s Lift, which takes robbery to a whole new level — 40,000 feet up in the air, to be exact.
“Since Set It Off and The Italian Job were made, criminal and law enforcement technology has improved significantly,” Gray tells Tudum. “In contrast to my earlier heist films in city settings, this heist in a massive plane at 40,000 feet introduces a whole new world of challenges.” Of course, Cyrus and...

The New Year lifts off on January 12 when Kevin Hart and his crew plan a heist like no other— at 40,000 ft. Netflix loves Kevin Hart and has given him a couple of Netflix comedy specials, and the comedian loves the streamer back. While his buddy Dwayne Johnson seems to be noticeably absent in this new heist ensemble action film, “Lift,” —it feels like the type of movie Hart would co-star in with The Rock— the film does look exactly like the kind of starry, expensive vehicle that Netflix typically backs.

A nearly unrecognizable Sofia Vergara playing a cartel boss, a new retelling of the story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed in the Andes in 1972, Kevin Hart assembling a team for a daring heist and Dan Levy dealing with loss and grief are among the standout projects hitting Netflix this January.
Spanish director J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow lands on Netflix on Jan. 4. After debuting in Venice, Society of the Snow has picked up plenty of awards on the international film festival circuit, and it recently made the shortlists in four categories for the 2024 Academy Awards, including best international feature film.

"It's impossible." "It just hasn't been done before." Can they pull it off? Netflix has revealed the first trailer for a new heist action comedy called Lift, coming to Netflix to watch in January 2024 early next year. This trailer just debuted during a big NFL game, which means Netflix is trying to make this one of their next big hits. Does it really have that potential? An international heist crew, led by Cyrus Whitaker, race to lift $500 million in gold from a passenger plane while flying at 40,000 feet. It's from the same director as The Italian Job remake and Law Abiding Citizen, F. Gary Gray, so it might actually be pretty cool to see them pull this off. Kevin Hart stars as Cyrus, with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D'Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó, Billy Magnussen, Jacob Batalon, Viveik Kalra, Yun Jee Kim, Burn Gorman, Paul Anderson, as well as Jean Reno and Sam Worthington.

Who’s the next big action hero? Well, if Netflix has anything to do with it, it’ll be Kevin Hart, with them dropping the trailer for the comedian’s upcoming movie, Lift. A heist film in the vein of Fast & Furious, in it Hart plays the leader of a high-tech gang of crooks hired by the government to steal $500 million in gold that’s being used to fund a terror cell. What’s the catch? The gold is on a passenger plane, and the gang needs to steal it mid-flight.
While this sounds like it would be easy peasy for the Fast & Furious gang, Hart’s crew is a little less badass. It includes Billy Magnussen and Úrsula Corberó, who, it should be noted, isn’t new to stealing cash following a few seasons on Netflix’s Money Heist.

Your mileage may vary on Kevin Hart as a movie star, and on Netflix's big-budget original movies. Both have a somewhat shaky track record, creatively speaking -- Hart has had his fair share of misses, and things like "The Gray Man," "Heart of Stone," and "Red Notice" haven't exactly inspired tons of confidence that Netflix's would-be blockbusters have much to offer. But Hart and the streamer are trying to change all of that by joining forces for "Lift," a new heist film which, to its credit, appears to be trying to elevate (ha!) its premise by centering on a band of thieves who attempt to steal $500 million in gold out of a passenger plane flying at 40,000 feet.
That's a fun if ridiculous idea, but hey, I'm a fan of the "Fast and Furious" franchise, so far be it from me to cast the first stone. This film has a...

Kevin Hart could be on cloud nine if he can pull off a high-flying heist operation in the first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming comedy-thriller Lift.
Landing on the streaming service on Jan. 12, F. Gary Gray’s feature centers on Cyrus Whitaker (Hart), the leader of an international heist team who gets enlisted to steal $500 million in gold from a mid-air passenger plane before the fortune ends up in the wrong hands. Lift co-stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Vincent D’Onofrio, Úrsula Corberó, Billy Magnussen, Jacob Batalon, Jean Reno and Sam Worthington.
The trailer shows Hart explaining the near-impossible task to his cohorts and warning that they’ll land in prison if they don’t succeed. “Half a billion in gold is on its way to a terrorist cell,” he says. “We gotta steal it mid-flight, 40,000 feet in the air.”
Hart does his best to formulate a perfect plan, although numerous complications mean...

For nearly 20 years, Simon Kinberg has been one of the biggest filmmakers in Hollywood. From his first screenplay, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," becoming a blockbuster hit starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, to shepherding the "X-Men" movies for well over a decade and co-creating "Star Wars Rebels," Kinberg has certainly left his mark on the business. Now, he's making his mark on the world of premium streaming television as his sci-fi series "Invasion" is wrapping up its second season on Apple TV+.
The second season of "Invasion" picks up just months after the events of season 1, with the aliens escalating their attacks in an all-out war against the humans. If Kinberg has his way, this will just be the second part of a larger story that plays out over a couple more seasons -- but we'll get to that. Even if this show doesn't get a third season, Kinberg has plenty to keep him busy,...

There could be a contest as to whether there are more unmade Guillermo del Toro projects or more unmade “Star Wars” movies. So it’s not illogical that the two briefly intersected. The filmmaker himself noted, during a Q&a sponsored by Collider, that he was once working on a “Star Wars” movie with screenwriter David S. Goyer set on Tatooine. The project was indeed a would-be “Star Wars Story” centered on the crime lord Jabba the Hutt.
Goyer previously confirmed the project in the abstract on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he stated that “There was just a lot of behind [the scenes] stuff going on at Lucasfilm at the time. But it’s a cool script.”
Del Toro confirmed at the Q&a that it was indeed about “the rise and fall of Jabba the Hutt.” He noted: “We were doing a lot of stuff, and then it’s not my property,...

Kevin Hart is wheelchair-bound after sustaining injuries in a race on Thursday.
In the video, Hart told a story of how he and his friend, former New England Patriots star Stevan Ridley, 34, were debating who was faster. Hart and Ridley agreed to a bet with a 40-yard dash to determine the winner. While attempting the sprint, Hart tore his abductors.
Now, Hart cannot walk for six to eight weeks and is currently in a wheelchair.
Hart told his 178 million Instagram followers that people 40 and over should respect that age because, according to Hart, it’s harder to do “young people things.”
Many celebrities weighed in the comments on Hart’s post.
“Tore my abductor off my pelvis during a wrestling match. True story. You’ll be fine. You’ll grow a 3rd ball but you’ll be fine,” Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson said.
