NBC saw solid ratings on Wednesday night with the airing of two Christmas specials
Airing from 8-10 p.m. on Nov. 29, the annual “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” special reached an audience of 7 million people when accounting for three days of delayed viewing across NBC, Peacock and digital platforms. That number, calculated from a combination of Nielsen measurement and NBCUniversal’s proprietary data, marked the best viewership for the Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting since 2020. The special was the most-watched program on TV that night, and improved on last year’s viewership by 7%. In the key adults 18-49 demographic, it earned a strong 0.8 rating.
This year’s “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” was hosted by Kelly Clarkson and featured performances by Chloe Bailey, Adam Blackstone, Cher, David Foster, Liz Gillies, Darlene Love, Seth MacFarlane, Barry Manilow, Katharine McPhee, Keke Palmer, Carly Pearce and Manuel Turizo. And the retro halls will even be decked with decorations originally purchased by Presley. (Graceland also still houses the receipts for some of these relics.) But of course, it’s the music that’s front and center here, with seasonal tunes, Presley’s rock ’n’ roll originals,...

There will be no fourth season for Big Sky at ABC as the network has opted not to renew David E. Kelley’s drama series. It is unclear yet whether co-studio A+E Studios would seek a new home for the show starring Katheryn Winnick and Kylie Bunbury.
Big Sky, which had a straight-to-series order, was a breakout when it premiered in November 2020. It was one of the strongest broadcast series to launch during the pandemic-hit 2020-21 season and set a mini trend for a big-name actor (in this case Ryan Philippe) to be announced as a star of a series and be used heavily in the marketing campaign only to have their character shockingly die in the first episode.
Ratings for the heavily serialized Big Sky have significantly slipped since the high flying first season, with the drama among the lowest rated scripted series on ABC this season when the show aired 13 episodes vs.

Box, “Big Sky” follows private detective Cassie Dewell (Bunbury) and ex-cop Jenny Hoyt (Winnick), who join forces to search for two sisters who have been kidnapped by a truck driver on a remote highway in Montana, per ABC. But when they discover that these are not the only girls who have disappeared in the area, they must race against the clock to stop the killer before another woman is taken.
The series premiere, which aired Nov. 17, ended with a twist that saw lead character Cody Hoyt (played by Ryan Phillippe) shot dead by State Trooper Rick Legarski (John Carroll Lynch).

“Big Sky” is getting a little bigger.
ABC has issued an order for six additional episodes of the freshman drama, bringing the season 1 total to 16 episodes. News of the additional order comes only three episodes into the season, which premiered back in mid-November.
It comes as no great surprise given that the show has been a strong ratings performer for the Disney-owned network. After seven days of delayed viewing, the series premiere grew to 10.8 million total viewers and a 2.5 rating among adults 18-49, making it ABC’s most-watched and highest-rated series debut since “The Rookie.”
The premiere’s big numbers can likely be attributed in part to the shocking twist at the very end, when one of the lead characters, Cody Hoyt (Ryan Philippe), was shot dead by State Trooper Rick Legarski (John Carroll Lynch). Philippe and fellow stars Kylie Bunbury and Katheryn Winnick addressed the twist during the series’ virtual premiere.

During the second day of ABC’s Virtu-Fall Presentations, Big Sky executive producer and showrunner David E. Kelley said there’s no secret to creating a successful TV show. For the notable Big Little Lies creator helming a hit title can be quite simple.
“It’s very unscientific and inexact. I don’t consider myself a uber-producer or a television maven,” Kelley said during Wednesday’s Big Sky panel. “If I find something I like then, I just cross my fingers, close my eyes and hope there’s enough ppl out there that will find it interesting.”
The showrunner, joined by cast members including Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury and Ryan Phillippe, teased what thriller enthusiasts can expect in the new ABC series, which will debut Nov 17.

ABC is the fifth and final broadcast network to announce its fall plans, and it's a relatively stable schedule.
Instead of bringing in pandemic-proof programming like Fox and The CW, the network is following the lead set by CBS and NBC and will air bring back original content in the fall.
That's not to say there will be no changes, however.
The Bachelorette, which was set to launch in May, has officially been bumped to the fall, meaning that ABC thinks it will be able to complete production in the next few months.
It will air on Tuesdays this time, for two hours each week, leading into the Katheryn Winnick-fronted The Big Sky.
This move also means that the Tuesday comedy line-up has been pulled, and forcing The Conners to a new night.

ABC released its fall lineup on Tuesday, with the broadcaster planning to be back to business as usual despite the production shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Guidelines were recently issued on how shows can resume production despite the pandemic, though the vast majority of productions have not started up again yet.
“We wanted to honor the current environment and be thoughtful, which is why we waited until this moment when we have more confidence in our ability to return scripted programming in the fall,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke tells Variety.
Burke did acknowledge the chance that the schedule as it currently exists may not happen in a normal time frame, however. “We hope it’s a fall schedule,” she says. “We’re calling it our premiere schedule.”

The list of candidates for the 2020 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors election is now out, with the winner in each branch being chosen directly from these entries rather than whittling it down to four finalists in each, as has been done previously. The list of candidates is made up of qualified AMPAS members who actually submit themselves.
Also new this year in the streamlined timetable, as Deadline exclusively reported May 16. The winners for the 17 open slots on the 54-member board will be chosen by preferential balloting, just like Best Picture race at the Oscars. Voting begins Monday and ballots are due back June 5.
The actors branch is the largest in the Academy and it also has drawn the biggest field of contenders for the one spot that is up. Incumbent governor Whoopi Goldberg is running for re-election against past governor Ed Begley Jr. vying to return to the board.

They will join 11 returning ABC scripted series, which have been renewed for next season, including eight picked up today, as well as the previously announced Supermarket Sweep series reboot with Leslie Jones, which also will debut next season.
2020 ABC Pilots & Series Orders
“At a time when we are physically apart and shared experiences matter more than ever, these shows will build on the strategy that has made us No. 1 this season – bringing people together, creating cultural moments, and making content that entertains and inspires across generations and demographics,” said ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke, referring to ABC’s No.1 finish for the 2019-20 season with entertainment programming, excluding sports.
Big Sky (fka. The Big Sky) had a series commitment/ order from the get-go, though it was formally contingent on ABC seeing a pilot, while Call Your Mother had a pilot order. Big Sky, from A+E Studios and 20th Century Fox TV, already had a writers room working on additional scripts, while Call Your Mother, from Sony Pictures TV and ABC Studios, had received an order from the network for 2 backup scripts.

The remaining ABC pilots, including high-profile dramas Rebel, starring Katey Sagal, and thirtysomething sequel thirtysomething(else), both of which also had opened writers rooms, remain in contention. I hear some will be piloted later, when Hollywood production is safe to resume, and there is a chance that some will go straight-to-series like The Big Sky and Call Your Mother.
Disney TV Studios, whose divisions 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios produce or co-produce all ABC pilots, is in the process of extending the options of the casts of all outstanding pilots through Sept. 30, I hear. As Deadline reported earlier this month, Disney TV Studios is among the studios that started paying the actors on their pilots, which allows the studio to amend cast deals and extend options.
‘Schooled’, ‘Bless This Mess, ‘Single Parents’, ‘Emergence’ & ‘Kids Say The Darndest Things’ Canceled By ABC
As the coronavirus pandemic completely upended the 2020 pilot season, with all pilots grounded before most had started production, the networks ordered backup scripts for their pilots to give them a better sense of projects’ potential and help them make straight-to-series decisions. All nets originally commissioned one backup script, with ABC subsequently ordering a second for all of their pilots.
Besides the three projects with writers rooms and Call Your Mother, among those that had been garnering very early buzz were drama Harlem’s Kitchen and comedy Home Economics.
This marks a second series order for the industrious Kelley today; Netflix this morning announced his new anthology Anatomy of a Scandal.
Written and executive produced by The Practice creator in his return to ABC, Big Sky is based on The Highway, the first book in C.J. Box’s Cassie Dewell series of novels. In the procedural thriller, private detective Cassie Dewell (Bunbury) partners with ex-cop Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick) on a search for two sisters who have been kidnapped by a truck driver on a remote highway in Montana. When they discover that these are not the only girls who have disappeared in the area, they must race against the clock to stop the killer before another woman is taken.
Written and executive produced by The New Adventures Of Old Christine creator Lizer, Call Your Mother revolves around an empty-nester mom, Jean Raines (Sedgwick), who wonders how she ended up alone while her children live their best lives thousands of miles away. She decides her place is with her family and as she reinserts herself into their lives, her kids realize they might actually need her more than they thought.
Here are more details about the newly picked up series:
Big Sky
From visionary storyteller David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies) comes Big Sky, a thriller created by Kelley, who will write multiple episodes and serve as showrunner in its premiere season. But when they discover that these are not the only girls who have disappeared in the area, they must race against the clock to stop the killer before another woman is taken. Based on the series of books by C.J. Box, Big Sky is executive produced by David E. Kelley, Ross Fineman, Matthew Gross, Paul McGuigan and C.J. Call Your Mother is produced by Sony Pictures Television & ABC Studios. ABC Studios is a part of Disney Television Studios, alongside 20th Century Fox Television and Fox 21 Television Studios.

EuropaCorp Films USA, the U.S. arm of Luc Besson’s Paris-based company, has been granted a six-month debt waiver from a French commercial court.
Parent company EuropaCorp has already been on a six-month debt waiver since May, and the protection is supposed to come to an end in late November. A source close to the company said the debt waiver would likely be extended in order to allow EuropaCorp to complete its restructuring plan. Listed on the Paris stock market, EuropaCorp is currently in negotiations to be taken over by the New York investment fund Vine Alternative Investments, its junior lender.
The waiver for EuropaCorp Films USA has taken several months to be granted by the French court because it’s a company established in the U.S., according to a company spokesperson, who said the waiver was chiefly an administrative procedure since EuropaCorp Films USA doesn’t have any assets.

In a competitive bidding war, Paramount Players has acquired the rights to develop an untitled country music musical with “Across the Universe” producer Matthew Gross and country music super-producer Mark Bright on board to develop.
Gross brought the project to the studio, and the fact that Bright was producing the film’s soundtrack stood as a prominent selling point in the bidding war. Bright produced for major acts including Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood. Both he and Gross will produce the album, with Gross producing the film.
Following the success of musicals like “The Greatest Showman,” studios are seeing a huge market for the genre, and Paramount is now fast-tracking the pic to pre-production.
The script will be penned by “Galavant” showrunners Kat Likkel and John Hoberg based on an idea conceived by Gross at the 2018 Stagecoach musical festival. Likkel and Hoberg will also exec produce. Shane Stevens and Karyn Rochelle...

CEO Dawn Hudson oversees a staff of more than 300 who conduct the Academy’s day-to-day business.
