The end of a year that has seen television reach a new summit of influence and importance, with the arrival of 2021 on the horizon, provides a moment to look back at the shows that define the medium in the 21st century so far.
To that end, as so many of us have spent months of the coronavirus pandemic locked down in our homes watching the tube, we’ve put together a list of the series that got us here.
If you’re looking for a No. 1 ranking, we suggest looking elsewhere: Our list of influencers is in no particular order. The empirical perquisite is that the show had to have debuted after January 1, 2001. The subjective push behind our selections centers not just on the series, but also the depth and width of its reach.

Blumhouse gave us a jump scare today as they announced that they will drop the Divide/Conquer-produced slasher film Thriller on Netflix on April 14. Following the surprise release of last week’s horror Mercy Black, this is the second time Blumhouse has surprised us with a release date for one of their films.
Written and directed by filmmaker Dallas Jackson and executive produced by RZA, Thriller is cut from the same cloth as classic slasher films like Prom Night and Halloween, but subverts the genre which usually takes place in white suburbia and sets it in modern-day Compton, CA, where teenagers experience an unforgiving cityscape of racism and violence.
Through the a black horror lens, the movie follows the story of an introverted young man named Chauncey Page who is sent to juvenile hall after he accidentally kills a young woman who is part of a group of tormentors that...

Blumhouse has released the first trailer for their upcoming new horror/slasher film called Thriller. The movie takes a very familiar plot that we’ve seen a hundred times before in horror movies, but this time is set in South Central La, or more specifically… Compton.
Thriller follows the story of an introverted young man named Chauncey Page who is sent to juvenile hall after he accidentally kills a young woman who is part of a group of tormentors that play a cruel prank on him. Years later he is released and is back for revenge — and blood — as Chauncey (Jason Woods) serves up some murderous karma as the group, now in high school, gets ready for Homecoming. Dressed in a hoodie and a menacing glare, he terrorizes them picks them off one by one.
If you’re a fan of slasher movies then this might be a film that you’ll enjoy.

Shot in just 21 days Bone Tomahawk is a slow burning western/horror hybrid. It stars Lost’s Matthew Fox, Hateful Eight’s man of the flared up moustache – slightly trimmed for this role – Kurt Russell, Cabin In The Woods’ Richard Jenkins and season two Fargo’s Patrick Wilson. This quartet of acting talent is forced together to go off in search of Wilson’s kidnapped wife (TV’s Lili Simmons), jailcell grifter Purvis (David Arquette) and the Deputy Sheriff (Evan Jonigkeit). They’ve been taken, we are told, by a primitive, violent tribe of native Americans known as troglodytes.

In a world where bullying has evolved into a more technological savvy beast, it’s important for movies to shine a light on the emotional damage that lingers long after school lunches have been flipped and ridicule has been doled out – but Some Kind Of Hate isn’t that movie. Adam Egypt Mortimer’s ultra-violent anti-bullying PSA certainly attacks the slasher genre from a new, unique angle, but an overwhelming theme of repressed hatred isn’t explored farther than a generic understanding that bullying is bad. The characters are all rather slight, and while Mortimer’s team delivers some wild bouts of skin-slitting gore, there’s just too much pulsating hate to understand what message this first-time director is trying to convey.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Rlj Entertainment. **there are some spoilers in this review. Director: Adam Egypt Mortimer. Writers: Brian DeLeeuw and Adam Egypt Mortimer. Cast: Maestro Harrell, Grace Phipps, Spencer Breslin, Sierra McCormick and Lexi Atkins. Some Kind of Hate is an upcoming horror release. To be distributed by Rlj Entertainment, the film had its World Premiere at the Stanley Film Festival, this year. Very intense in nature, the film's story revolves around bullying and a broken protagonist. He summons a demon for protection, dumbfoundedly. From here, the film turns into a slasher feature and gore aspects are a wrist-slashing spectacle. However, a few questions remain, including whether the villain was dispatched by herself or by another. Did she cut her own throat? The supernatural elements are prominent. And, Some Kind of Hate is a satisfying revenge story. Lincoln (Ronen Rubinstein) comes from a broken home.

Warning: Full spoilers for episodes 1 and 2 of “Fear the Walking Dead” follow… Update: I wrote a post last week about the decision that the producers of “Fear the Walking Dead” made to introduce two young, male, African American characters only to immediately “kill one off” and leave the other in the balance. It’s a horror trope that many fans of the genre are familiar with and that the parent series has been accused of employing with some regularity. Some felt that I was making much ado about nothing with my original article. Full disclosure: I’d seen the second episode and knew what was coming next. I wanted to write my initial piece to avoid spoilers, however. Also, I’d been taken aback by the choice even before I saw the second episode and realized that the trend continued. The second episode of “Fear the Walking Dead” has...

Though it will take place in the early days of the zombie uprising, Fear The Walking Dead will focus on the living more than the dead, and Robert Kirkman recently discussed the show's core characters, including several who are shown in new photos.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly's Dalton Ross, Kirkman discussed the background of Madison, the series' widowed mother of two (Kim Dickens):
"Madison is a character whose husband died. And she’s been raising her kids on her own, so she’s a character that has experienced a very abrupt change to her life that she has had to adapt to."
Kirkman also talked about Madison's kids, Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and Nick (Frank Dillane), who are complete opposites:
"Alicia is your atypical teenage girl. She excels at school. She’s on her way to college... She’s kind of the model student and the model child.

To celebrate their new track “Air” hitting the Beatport Top Ten, Dzeko & Torres are releasing their remix of Zedd’s “I Want You To Know” as a free download.
Working once again with Maestro Harrell, who the boys teamed up with for their recent song “For You,” the remix retains Selena Gomez’s vocals but takes most of the pop/electro elements and turns them into banging beats that are primed for some main stage action this summer.
It’s a heavier version of the song, to be sure, but it should please those who count themselves as fans of both Dzeko & Torres and Maestro Harrell, as it gives the track more edge and certainly makes it hit harder.
Take a listen to the remix of “I Want You To Know” above and let us know what you think of it in the comments section.

★★☆☆☆ The inertia of millennial existential malaise has been de rigueur in the horror genre of late. David Robert Mitchell terrified with a wonderful twist on teenage anxieties in his It Follows (2014), exploring the dualities of sex and the slow dread of infernal lazy afternoons. Elsewhere Starry Eyes (2014), written and directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, sought to plumb similar depths from the ennui of La creatives. Dark Summer (2015) threatens to follow suit but Mike Le's script - directed by Paul Solet - begins as though it intends to stalk the disquieting hallways of 21st century technological preoccupation before careering into rote haunted house banality.
The presence of It Follows actor Keir Gilchrist (pictured right) does little to help avoid such unfavourable comparisons. In that film he played a lovesick teen willing to sacrifice himself for Maika Monroe. On this occasion his unrequited feelings have led to some cyber-stalking and landed his character,...

While Dark Summer doesn’t exactly impress as a paranormal thriller, Mike Le’s story does manage to capture an awkward period in society where people would rather sit behind a computer screen and “research” personal facts about others, than strike a human relationship that requires conversation, interaction, and most importantly, a vulnerable connection. In a world of Tweeting, Instagramming, Tindering, and whatever controlling Apps my generation chooses over personal engagements, hacking into someone’s bank of cyber-information seems like a twisted romantic fantasy despite being an invasive breach of security. That’s the true horror of Dark Summer. Exploiting technology’s disillusioned grasp on a devolving society is what it does best. The film fails, however, to portray a convincing cyber-stalking scenario, which unfortunately turns into a lackluster haunted house story that struggles to build tension, spooky momentum, or suicidal scares.

Sentenced to house arrest for cyber-stalking a classmate, what is teenage Daniel to do? As Dark Summer gets underway, parole officer Stokes (Peter Stormare) explains to Daniel (Keir Gilchrist) what is and isn't allowed. Daniel immediately violates the terms of his sentence, enlisting his friends Abby (Stella Maeve) and Kevin (Maestro Harrell) to bring him a laptop computer. (That's two violations in one, since he's not permitted to have any unaccompanied minors in the house.) He's some kind of tech whiz, and he's already laid the groundwork so he can connect to the internet without being detected. (That's violation three.) Now he can resume his cyber-stalking of former classmate Mona Wilson, played by Grace Phipps. (That would be violation four.) Except that Daniel hesitates, and...

“From Paul Solet, director of the acclaimed hit Grace, comes Dark Summer, a suspense thriller combining the supernatural terror of classic horrors The Shining and Poltergeist, with the tension and modern cool of Disturbia. Summer is a time to relax, unwind, take a vacation, and be free. But 17 year old Daniel Austin gets none of that because his obsessive online stalking of his classmate and crush, Mona Wilson, got him put on house arrest for the whole summer. A new slasher movie is on it's way from Caliber Media and Revek Entertainment. 'Some Kind of Hate' is the bringing together of revenge and the supernatural as a bullied kid summons a spirit to deal with his tormentors. It's good to see writer/director Adam Egypt Mortimer trying something a little bit different with the genre but it does sound like a familiar amalgamation of past horror features that have already treaded similar ground - such as Brit horror 'Tormented' amongst others. But still our hopes are high. 'Some Kind of Hate' stars Ronen Rubinstein, the gorgeous Grace Phipps ('Fright Night'), Sierra McCormick, Michael Polish, Noah Segan ('Looper'), Spencer Breslin ('The Happening'), Maestro Harrell ('Suburgatory'), Jasper Polish ('The Astronaut Farmer'), Jeremy Hawkins, Brando Eaton and the sexy Lexi Atkins -below ('Zombeavers')....

Around these parts we love a good slasher movie. The only problem is finding a good slasher movie. Will the killer in the recently announced Some Kind of Hate be able to bring the right kind of disturbing to the old chopping block? Read on for details.
According to THR, Ronen Rubinstein, Grace Phipps, and Sierra McCormick will star in Some Kind of Hate, a new take on the slasher genre from Adam Egypt Mortimer.
The flick centers on a tightly wound kid who is a favorite target for the local high school bullies. He is sent away to a remote reform school, where the teen accidentally summons a vengeful spirit -- herself a victim of bullying -- to exact retribution on his tormentors.
Mortimer co-wrote the script with novelist Brian DeLeeuw (In This Way I Was Saved). Caliber Media partners Dallas Sonnier and Jack Heller arranged the financing and...

For Ryan Shay (Parker Young), life will never be the same as he knew it. Before the holiday break, Ryan found out that his parents Sheila (Ana Gasteyer) and Fred (Chris Parnell) had adopted him and Ryan’s reaction was understandably strong. In fact, he had a major freak-out attack, which led him to test what was real around him by kicking various street posts, finally forcing him to as if he were running from a truth he could not bear. Ryan’s life will never be the same. He had been living comfortably content as a Shay, knowing who his parents were and that he was related to his sister Lisa (Allie Grant). But once one finds out that the family they thought was theirs is actually not, reality seems to shift. Ryan began to doubt his own reality and realness. It made perfect sense. But life should not...

Chatswin gets deep into the Halloween spirit in a big way on "Suburgatory" Wednesday night (Oct. 24) -- even going so far as to assemble an angry mob to chase down a "witch."
Zap2it visited the show's set as the episode was in production -- and carved a few pumpkins with cast members Ana Gasteyer, Chris Parnell, Allie Grant and Parker Young. As best we can tell, our jack-o-lanterns didn't end up as set dressing for the episode -- but we did get some scoop on what you'll see in "The Witch of East Chatswin."
The "witch" in question is played by Gasteyer and Parnell's former "Saturday Night Live" cohort Rachel Dratch. "We have this history going all the way back to [middle] school in Chatswin," Gasteyer says, and it's not a good one.

Sheila Shay and Dratch's character, Paula, are "pretty much at opposite ends of this polarity.

Count Tim Meadows as the latest Saturday Night Live vet to call Suburgatory‘s Chatswin home.
TVLine has learned that Meadows has booked a multi-episode role on the sophomore ABC comedy as the father of Tessa’s friend Malik (Maestro Harrell). His character, Edmond, is described as “the strong patriarch of a close-knit family,” someone who moved his brood to Chatswin for the schools, not the people. Edmond is proud of his recipe for turkey meatballs (yummm) and blames himself for the childhood death of his younger brother (um, Ok). He’ll first appear in Episode 7.

With "Twilight" wrapping up this year, and "The Hunger Games" proving a giant hit, the hunt is on for the next big young adult movie franchise. And we suspect that of all the projects brewing, "The Mortal Instruments" has one of the best chances. The book series by Cassandra Clare has sold millions of copies across its four novels (plus two more in a spin-off series, "The Infernal Devices") to date, as many as any of its competitors. And since the movie version started development, the books' fervent fan-base has come out in force for any tidbit on the project.
And now, the film is finally set to happen, courtesy of Constantin Films ("Resident Evil"): it has a new director in "Karate Kid" helmer Harald Zwart, a locked-in star in Lily Collins, and even a release date, of August 23, 2013. With the film finally moving forward, we decided we'd take...

You can scarcely swing a dead cat lately without hitting some kind of best-of-the-decade list (even though, technically, the first decade of the 21st century doesn't end till next year).
Well, here comes another one. Rather than try to construct another best-shows-of-the-'00s list, though -- something that's already been done here, there and everywhere -- I decided to focus on individual episodes from 2000-09. Are these the flat-out "best" episodes of television over the past 10 years? Probably not. But these are the ones that stick with me, that I can still remember not just for brilliant lines or beautifully constructed plots, but for how I actually felt while watching them. They are, simply, my favorites.
Here's my list, in no particular order. What's yours?

Recently, reports about a spin-off for the 1990's most popular teen soap, Beverly Hills 90210 circulated. Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas was hired to write the pilot for the spin-off, which would hopefully be picked up by one of the major networks. In fact, as the pilot is currently in the works, casting rumors and announcements have circulated, bringing into discussion names such as Tristan Wilds, Michael Steger and teenybopper Hilary Duff. One thing's for sure though, The Wire actor is certainly taking the lead on the newest remake of all time.
Hot off the press is news about the 19-year-old Tristan Wilds, who plays Michael Lee on The Wire. In the HBO series, Wilds plays a troubled young man who struggles to support his younger brother and drug-dependent mother. Battered by the past, he forces himself to move forward with the help of his friends, Namond (Julito McCullum), Randy (Maestro Harrell...

The following piece discusses the series finale of "The Wire" (which aired Sunday on HBO). If you're a "Wire" fan, I recommend watching the finale before reading what's below.
An image has been in my mind since I watched the series finale of “The Wire.” It’s a scene of a character named Dukie preparing to shoot up drugs.
It’s only a brief glimpse at Dukie’s fate, but it’s heartbreaking.
We met Dukie (Jermaine Crawford) and three other eighth-grade boys two years ago, in Season 4 of “The Wire.” He was a shy, smart, gawky youth who didn’t quite fit in on the tough streets of West Baltimore.
He blossomed when his teacher, a former cop, started giving Dukie clean clothes and soap and showing him how to use a computer. As he gained confidence and shed some of his reticence, it was impossible not to care about Dukie,...
