The show about people returning from the dead -- is now dead itself. ABC has cancelled their Resurrection TV series after two seasons on the air.
On Resurrection, a small town in Missouri is turned upside down when long-dead loved ones return after 30 years. The cast includes Omar Epps, Frances Fisher, Matt Craven, Devin Kelley, Mark Hildreth, Samaire Armstrong, Sam Hazeldine, Landon Gimenez, and Kurtwood Smith.
The series debuted well but the ratings declined over the course of its first season -- averaging a 2.52 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.32 million viewers. The network brought it back anyway and the second season debut was down by more than 40% when compared to the series debut.

Last spring, this ABC show fell in the ratings over the course of its first season. The network renewed Resurrection anyway. Was that a mistake? Will the ratings keep falling so that it's cancelled? Or, will they rise so that it'll be renewed for a third season? Stay tuned.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest.

Late in the 2013-14 season, NBC and ABC launched three new Sunday night dramas -- all with single word titles. NBC cancelled Crisis and Believe while ABC renewed Resurrection for a second season. In retrospect, was that a good decision for the alphabet network? Should Resurrection have been cancelled as well?

Resurrection Season One DVD Review
Resurrection seems like the epitome of a series that didn’t expect to last past the first four episodes. When I wrote my original review of the show, and gave it a high rating, I said the show’s great weakness to that point was that it didn’t seem to want to commit to how weird it was going to be. It creates an opening within the first few episodes that leave viewers unable to be confident that it is about to lean toward the very weird, or toward an almost straight, “normal” drama that just happens to involve very abnormal events.
That isn’t even a problem in one sense, because not knowing where things are going isn’t a bad theory. Where it becomes tricky is insofar as viewers want to know just how goofy the twists and turns are apt to become.

This show doesn't need reviving. ABC has renewed their new Resurrection TV series for a second season.
On Resurrection, a small town in Missouri is turned upside down when deceased loved ones start to return. The cast includes Omar Epps, Kurtwood Smith, Frances Fisher, Devin Kelley, Matt Craven, Samaire Armstrong, Mark Hildreth, Sam Hazeldine, and Landon Gimenez.
Following a lot of promotion, this drama debuted to a very strong 3.8 rating with 13.9 million viewers. The ratings have fallen quite a bit in the last few weeks but it's still generating positive numbers for ABC. The network has had a tough time filling their Sunday night schedule and this is one of only two new ABC dramas that have had any success in the ratings.
What do you think? Have you been watching this show? Are you glad that it's been renewed...

Resurrection, the new supernatural series about a boy who resurfaces 32 years after his apparent death, premiered on ABC Sunday night.
'Resurrection' Recap
In a rice paddy in China, a little boy clad in jeans and a red sweatshirt wakes up, takes in a large breath and wanders through the nearby town. There, after he’s approached by a concerned couple, he faints. The boy’s story is later recounted to Agent Martin Bellamy (Omar Epps). All the agent has to work with to identify the boy is the inscription of “Jacob” inside his shirt and its Mansfield Panthers logo.
Bellamy eventually contacts the Arcadia, Mo., police department and asks if there are any missing children. The sheriff informs the agent that no kids are missing from the town and promptly hangs up. Still convinced that Arcadia is the boy’s home, he asks Jacob (Landon Gimenez) if he...

Time seems to stand still only during those last minutes of the last day of school or waiting to go through airport security.
With the exception of some actors, we all age - unless, of course, something else (besides skilled plastic surgeons) is at work. ABC's "Resurrection," premiering Sunday, March 9, considers what happens when time stands still for some, and the dead return.
This is not a zombie gore fest. Rather, it's a quiet drama in a small town. Parents endure the never-ending grief of having to bury their only child. They go on with their lives, because what else can they do?
Then, 32 years later, Jacob returns, still 8.
His parents, Lucille and Henry Langston (Frances Fisher, Kurtwood Smith), are understandably shocked. Lucille immediately accepts the return of her son - no questions asked of this miracle.
"A mother knows his touch, his smell," Fisher tells Zap2it. "DNA doesn't lie.

Resurrection Review
ABC has been trying to hit on a lot of fronts lately, but nothing has been a more clear shot at fans of Lost than the upcoming Resurrection. The trailers don’t exactly give you that impression (see sizzle reel below), but they hint that it might be there, as does the general premise.
We watch as Jacob awakes in a rice field in China, clearly in unfamiliar territory. The case soon falls to Immigration agent J. Martin Bellamy (Omar Epps), who only knows that Jacob has made his way back to the United States, but hasn’t spoken a word since he was found. Though Martin is supposed to just drop Jacob off with Child Protective Services, he seems to be getting some information out of Jacob, and when Jacob confirms that he can find his way home, in Arcadia, Missouri, Martin takes him there.

Returning from the dead has been all the rage – sorry – in TV land over the past few years. Of course we have The Walking Dead and several zombie-themed episodes on shows from Grimm to Castle, but lately there’s been a new kind of post-dead series making an appearance, that’s neither zombie-based nor ghostly. It’s people who just simply, inexplicably (at least at first) return from the dead.
There are a few such shows currently in development, but one has been on our screens recently, and another is coming our way in March. The first, the absolutely excellent The Returned, aired on The Sundance Channel in December. It’s a French series with subtitles, but gained quite the cult-ish following – including me – and a lot of critical acclaim. It has been picked up for a second season. We told you back in September that A&E is developing...

During the hustle and bustle of the holidays, ABC aired a new teaser for its upcoming "Resurrection," and in case you missed it, we have a look at it right here. The show rises on Sunday, March 9th.
"Resurrection" Synopsis:
The people of Arcadia, Missouri, are forever changed when their deceased loved ones suddenly start to return. An 8-year-old American boy (Landon Gimenez) wakes up alone in a rice paddy in a rural Chinese province with no idea how he got there.
Details start to emerge when the boy, who calls himself Jacob, recalls that his hometown is Arcadia; and an Immigration agent, Martin Bellamy (Omar Epps), takes him there. The home he claims as his own is occupied by an elderly couple, Harold (Kurtwood Smith) and Lucille Garland (Frances Fisher), who lost their son, Jacob, more than 30 years ago. While they look different, young Jacob recognizes them as his parents.

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane... Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn, world serves its own needs, regardless of your own needs. Tell me with the rapture and the reverent in the right - right? You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

And now we get to one of most – and least – favorite type of news story, which involves casting details for a series that has not yet aired! How very exciting it is to try and guess what kind have impact Kathleen Munroe will have on Resurrection, a show I know next to nothing about because not a single second of footage has passed through my optic nerve. It’s safe to say the majority of what I will be saying for the next 200 plus words is all bull shit. But you see, half the fun is just talking randomly about how I have no idea how Munroe will be a benefit to ABC’s Resurrection.
According to TVLine, Munroe will have a major recurring role in the midseason drama, which is set to premiere Sunday, March 9. The show will take great pains to answer the question “What happens when the...

Few things are more disheartening and frustrating to fans of series as when their scheduling is wonky. You know, three weeks on, two weeks off. Shows lose momentum and the less committed fans lose interest and everyone gets scared that the show will get canceled.
Happily, ABC has announced its plans to run at least some of its shows’ seasons with few to no interruptions, before and after the winter break, and that’s good news (and slightly bad news) for us.
It affects Once Upon a Time and new series Resurrection. Once Upon a Time in Wonderland is of course not affected since it is, at least currently, considered to be a limited, 13-episode series.
The bad news part of the decision is that we’ll be waiting a bit before we’ll see the return and the premiere. Both shows will air on Sunday, March 9, with the midseason...

When ABC gave its “Upfront” presentation and announced its 2013-14 schedule two weeks ago, I told you about the return of Once Upon a Time and The Neighbors, and about upcoming series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
At the time I didn’t include new series Resurrection because, frankly, the trailer seemed a little too Touched By an Angel to be something we’d cover. Now that I’ve screened the pilot, I may have been premature. May have been. As with Touch and Awake and A Gifted Man before it, I’ve decided to give this one the benefit of the doubt. I’m hoping it will be more like Awake than like the other two; we’ll see. I really like the pilot, though, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what comes next.
Here’s the synopsis and the trailer.

At ABC‘s upfront, there were a few things that the network wanted to make sure you knew. 1) They are really impressed with the idea that people are going to watch Rebel Wilson do just about anything, and 2) There isn’t anything they’re happier about than bringing you more episodes of television created by Shonda Rhimes.
On these notes, the network would love for you to know that more Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal are coming your way. These, ABC would like to impress upon you (as advertisers) are really good shows. Because… hellllooo… so many people watch them that we’re bringing them back. But wait, don’t think that you’re as excited as you can get yet, because if those are your favorite shows, then we have a new one for you to fall in love with, Betrayal.

An 8-year-old boy turns up, seemingly out of nowhere, in a field in China. An immigration agent learns where the boy lives and brings him home to his parents -- who believe their son died more than 30 years ago.
Yet here he is, looking just the same as he did the last day he was alive.
That's the jumping-off point for ABC's new series "Resurrection." The drama stars Omar Epps ("House") as the immigration agent, Martin Bellamy, and Kurtwood Smith ("That '70s Show") and Frances Fisher ("Eureka," "Titanic") as Harold and Lucille Garland, the parents of the suddenly alive again Jacob (Landon Gimenez). The Garlands won't be the only residents of their Missouri town to have this kind of experience -- other people's loved ones soon start to return as well.
"Resurrection" is based on the novel "The Returned" by Jason Mott and was adapted by "Damages" and "The Killing" writer Aaron Zelman.

We already knew ABC had picked up "Resurrection" (formerly "The Returned") as a new series on its roster, and today we were hoping to learn what night of the week it will be airing on. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a little while longer.
Paul Lee, President, ABC Entertainment Group, is unveiling the network’s new lineup to the advertising and media communities this afternoon, and we got a look at the schedule, on which "Resurrection" is sadly missing. But the network added the following to its press release: "Please note shows picked up but not listed on the schedule will debut later in the 2013-14 season." In addition, "Resurrection" will be a limited series, airing just 12 to 13 episodes per season.
Below is the full synopsis. ABC will be releasing a first look video of the series a little later in the day so be sure to check back around 4pm Et/1pm Pt.

On the "no" side is "Gothica," one that we were watching closely as it was described as a sexy Gothic soap set in the present day that weaves together a mythology incorporating the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein, and Dorian Gray among others. Per Deadline, it had a good cast and some early buzz, but its premise of mixing famous horror literary characters just didn’t quite work.

The Returned – yet another crime drama for ABC, but let’s be honest – with all these names on board, it definitely sounds promising. So here we go, Omar Epps, Mark Hildreth and Kurtwood Smith are all set to star in Charles McDougall directed project which will revolve around the people in Arcadia whose lives are changed forever when their deceased loved ones return. McDougall will direct The Returned from a script written by Aaron Zelman which will (apparently) give us an answer to quite creepy question: what happens when the people you have mourned and buried suddenly appear on your doorstep as if not...

V (2009) has been canceled by ABC. The V remake TV series starring Morena Baccarin, Elizabeth Mitchell had been met with praise and dismay since its outset. V was about “an extraterrestrial race [who arrive] on Earth with seemingly good intentions, only to slowly reveal their true machinations the more ingrained into society they become.” The great season 2 finale, written about here: TV Review: V (2009): Season 2, Ep. 10: Mother’s Day and pictured here: V (2009): Mother’s Day: High Resolution Photos, spoke of the science fiction TV series that could have been, maybe not as great as Bablyon 5, Fringe, Space: Above and Beyond, the new Battlestar Galactica series, Firefly or Farscape but there was geek sustenance to be had. I have to give V writers Gregg Hurwitz and Scott Rosenbaum credit for the last episode, as I did in its review. They threw everything they had into the last episode and it showed.

V (2009): Mother’s Day: High Resolution Photos have premiered. We reviewed V (2009): Season 2, Ep. 10: Mother’s Day earlier. V (2009): Mother’s Day’s plot synopsis: “Anna (Morena Baccarin) is focused on having Lisa (Laura Vandervoort) breed with Tyler (Logan Huffman) to ensure the evolution of the Visitors, while Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Diana (Jane Badler) enlist Lisa to stage a coup against Anna and remove her from power before humanity is destroyed. Erica and the Fifth Column join Lisa in the attempted coup, which has devastating results. Also in the episode, Marc Singer, who played freedom fighter Mike Donovan on the original “V” series, guest stars as Lars Tremont, a member of a top secret organization of high-ranking military and government leaders from around the globe who have long suspected that the Visitors are very much not here in peace.” V (2009): Mother’s Day also starred Mark Hildreth,...

V (2009): Season 2, Ep. 10 – entitled Mother’s Day – had some of the best plot twists and action the science fiction TV show has seen to date. It was a great episode. I have to hand it to writers Gregg Hurwitz and Scott Rosenbaum, I have criticized them heavily in the past (written here: TV Review: V (2009): Season 1, Ep.12: Red Sky) but they certainly upped their plot twist game. The massive plot holes remain but now the show has something else sizable. Fallout. V will have massive fallout from the events in Mother’s Day. I even love the twisted title of the episode. The cliff hangers, some listed below, reminded me of the cliff hangers left unanswered in the Season Two finale of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles – entitled Born to Run.
The following are spoilers and what I found to be the most noteworthy portions of Mother’s Day.

ABC’s remake of V, the ’80s hit show about alien visitors who arrive on Earth with secretly malicious intentions, returns for a second season, in the face of dwindling ratings and a poor critical response. ABC clearly saw more potential for a turnaround than FlashForward, their other hyped sci-fi drama from 2009, which wasn’t fortunate enough to escape the axe. Unfortunately, although “Red Rain” was faster paced than usual, and managed to drop V’s annoying cloak of mystery a few times, it still exhibited many of the flaws that made it hard to enjoy season 1 in anything but a disposable way. I think this a show that has a strong foundation in its admittedly hoary premise, but too many mistakes were made in the remake’s blueprint…

This meant that the last episode became a full-fledged season finale instead of an incomplete ending to the whole show. And, in "Red Sky," there were so many things to pay attention to that some things may have slipped your attention. Anna (Morena Baccarin) and Lisa (Laura Vandervoort) invited Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell) and Tyler (Logan Huffman) on board the V ship. Erica decided that this was her opportunity to take action while on board. Kyle (Charles Mesure) promised to ambush Marcus (Christopher Shyer) to keep him busy. More things happened in the season finale of V than in every other episode of the first season combined. That’s a good thing. V definitely needs to inject some adrenaline into its reptile heart, now that it’s won the “hey, it’s more popular than FlashForward” sweepstakes and will be coming back for a second season. You could still argue that about half the characters in the main cast are extraneous, but you have to admit that the cliffhanger ending left you just a little bit interested in seeing where they take things in season 2.

As much as I love FlashForward, things aren't looking good for a second season pickup. That means things are naturally looking peachier for V, the biggest competitor of FlashForward. It seems increasingly more obvious that for one to survive, the other must die. As such, I'll be happy if TV's newest alien invasion lasts for another year. Not as happy as I would be for the steadily improving FlashForward, but V is improving a little itself, and could prove to be exciting television once things really get going.

This review may contain spoilers. The Fifth Column is in a full war with Anna (Morena Baccarin) and the V.s. Each side makes movements and counter movements like a deadly game of chess. For this episode, Erica (Elizabeth Mitchell), Kyle (Charles Mesure), Ryan (Morris Chestnut), and Father Jack (Joel Gretsch) all think they.re making an aggressive but necessary move only to discover their mistake. The decision to blow up a shuttle off of the intelligence from Joshua (Mark Hildreth) that it carried V trackers was made by everybody. In the rubble, they discovered that instead of V.s inside, it carried humans. While Erica had to deal with the act from the FBI side, Father Jack was the one who had the most to deal with in terms of his guilt. Making an emphatic point that they were no better ...

The creative team behind “V” continues to impress, each week turning out an episode that seems better than the last. “Hearts and Minds” balances action with an examination of how the main characters think and feel about the courses they are pursuing. Philosophies and ideologies have met the reality of war. After Episode 10, the Fifth Column is officially a terrorist organization, which must be somewhat hard to stomach for a former U.S. Army chaplain and an FBI agent. For all Ryan’s (Morris Chestnut) empathy that has allowed him to fall for a human and to support the human cause, he is positively bloodthirsty when it comes to murdering his own kind. And Hobbes (Charles Mesure) is just Hobbes. The growing dichotomy within the four-person cell has come to a head.
