“You got involved with a woman who fell in love with you for your sanity and hoped it would rub off.”
What would the horror version of Kramer vs. Kramer look like? What about a murderous version of Marriage Story? While horror fans might enjoy throwing in gory dismemberment or supernatural chaos to these extremely human stories, would we be able to stomach the devastating mix of physical and emotional pain? Divorce is already hard enough! But that’s just what David Cronenberg gives us with The Brood. This 1979 film is a shocking and powerful story about the death of a marriage and the extensive collateral damage that lies in its wake.
Nola (Samantha Eggar) is a young mother taking time for herself. In order to process childhood trauma, she’s enrolled in extensive treatment at the Somafree Institure, a therapeutic retreat run by the illustrious Dr. Raglan (Oliver Reed). His patented modality,...

The theory that what is inside the mind can become manifest on the body has been kicked around in various forms since ancient times and its influence is still felt today, sometimes with serious consequences, as when politicians persuade themselves that disabilities can be willed away. In the Sixties and Seventies it was particularly prominent amongst self-help gurus, and David Cronenberg’s messy but influential horror film exposes and exploits this, taking it to an extreme. Though not entirely successful as a piece of entertainment, it represents an important stage in the development of body horror cinema. It’s also of interest to students of the director’s work, as its satire has a very personal aspect related to the breakdown of his first marriage and the custody battle which then ensued.
In the film, we see Cronenberg’s alter-ego Frank (Art Hindle) trying to keep his five-year-old daughter Candice (Cindy Hinds) from spending court-appointed.

The Dead Zone (1983) is where director David Cronenberg turned from the horrors of the body to the torture of the soul. But before that, he made tentative steps towards adding a layer of vulnerability to his work, in the very personal and frightening The Brood (1979). It’s still rooted in the tactile, but listen closely and you can hear whispers of humanity piercing the skin.
Which is to take nothing away from his earlier works; Shivers (1975) and Rabid (1977) are both potent allegories (and gory allies) on class warfare and sexual promiscuity. But The Brood was written by Cronenberg while going through a divorce and nasty custody battle, and while it mostly maintains a safe distance from emotional investment for the viewer, the beginnings of a sympathetic point of view start to take shape.

David Cronenberg swaps his venereal ick-monsters for Samantha Eggar's mater furiosa, an annihilating female who commits her killings as would the villain of a Greek tragedy -- through her offspring. Oliver Reed is the new-age guru of 'Psychoplasmics,' who teaches Eggar to direct her rage in an utterly unique way. The disturbing concept sounds less preposterous when one finds out it was written in response to a brutal divorce experience. Hell hath no fury. The Brood
Written and directed by David Cronenberg
Canada, 1979
Inspired by his own unpleasant divorce, and the subsequent liberation of his daughter just before his ex-wife was able to take the girl to a California cult, David Cronenberg’s The Brood is essentially an ugly, highly unorthodox custody battle. As the great Canadian filmmaker famously quipped, “The Brood is my version of Kramer vs. Kramer [also released in 1979], but more realistic.”
The Brood is Cronenberg’s sixth feature, coming just after the seemingly out of place Fast Company (1979)—not so very odd given the director’s love for automobile racing—and just before his more exemplary breakthrough, Scanners (1981). It is consummate Cronenberg, with a heady mixture of clinically twisted science and the deep psychological strain that inevitably mars said science with corporeal disfigurement.
With his wife, Nola (Samantha Eggar), undergoing treatment at a facility known as the Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmics (a Cronenbergian...

“Mommie’S Dearest”
By Raymond Benson
David Cronenberg’s horror films always seem to tackle subjects that involve an unpredictable human body and the terror of your consciousness residing inside of it. He explored parasites in his first mainstream picture, Shivers (aka They Came From Within, 1975), and viral “stingers” than grow in a woman’s armpit in his second, Rabid, 1977. The rest of his movies, leading up to the ultimate statement of being trapped in a horrible body, The Fly (1986), all dealt with some aspect of physical or mental transformation. The Brood, released in 1979, fits right in with Cronenberg’s thematic fascination with flesh and blood. And it’s a corker.
Oliver Reed plays Dr. Raglan, an unorthodox psychotherapist who uses controversial techniques that cause his patients to manifest their inner turmoil and anger into visible, bizarre growths on their bodies. One guy sprouts spots. Another man grows a weird...

★★★★☆ Joining the Canadian master's sci-fi classic Scanners (1981) on UK Blu-ray for the first time thanks to Second Sight, David Cronenberg's gestating chiller The Brood (1979) has certainly played its part in the re-evaluation of children (and the complicit female reproductive system) as potentially murderous monstrosities. One of the greatest body horrors ever made, The Brood has been overlooked by some commentators due to some dated effects and occasional comparisons to the more lucrative Alien (also released that same year), but has more than enough guile and gore to go toe-to-toe with Scott's game-changer.
The film begins with concerned father Frank Carveth (Art Hindle) picking up daughter Candice (Cindy Hinds) from the shady Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmics, a secure clinic where ex-wife Nola's (Sam Eggar) is currently undergoing a course of experimental treatment for her uncontrollable bouts of rage. July 8th, 2013. That's the date David Cronenberg's The Brood will be hitting Blu-ray in the UK via Second Sight Films. May 10th, 2013. That's the date we start bitching here in the States that we don't have it on Blu-ray. Sigh.
Art Hindle, Cindy Hinds, Oliver Reed, and Samantha Eggar star along with lots of really grab-happy creepy kids.
Synopsis
Frank Carveth (Art Hindle – Invasion of the Body Snatchers) is becoming increasingly concerned about his ex-wife Nola’s (Eggar) secretive treatment at the sinister ‘Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmics,’ headed by cult figure Dr Raglan (Reed – The Devils). His controversial and extreme methods seek to unleash his patients' rage, which take on physical manifestations. As Nola’s increasingly psychotic anger is vented during her sessions, brutal murders befall those at whom it’s directed. When Frank’s daughter is abducted, he is led to Raglan’s Institute and a terrifying, repellent final confrontation,...

First up is actress Naomi Grossman, who plays the toothy "pinhead" in the second season of American Horror Story; who, sans heavy make-up is anything but unattractive. Also on the bill will be Canadian actors Art Hindle and Cindy Hinds from director David Cronenberg's 1979 masterpiece The Brood. Hinds, whose performance as a tormented little girl in The Brood is one of the greatest child turns in horror has been awol from acting for over 25 years and has never appeared at any convention, marking her Shock Stock sign up as a first. Hindle, who played her father in The Brood, was also in the certifiable classics Black Christmas and Philip Kaufman's chilling 1978 riff on Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.
Joining Grossman, Hindle and Hinds will be Patricia Quinn (Rocky Horror, Shock Treatment), Gerrit Graham (Phantom Of The Paradise, Chud II), Ken Foree (Dawn Of The Dead, Lords Of Salem...

A horror writer with a "Deadline" who has lapsed reality with his writing fantasy couldn't possibly go wrong can it? Why yes it can!
In 1981 a strange Canadian horror movie came out called "Deadline". Paragon released this psychological terror that is filled with strange imagery and at times truly depressing. It has only been given the Paragon VHS release that is fairly difficult to find today. Paragon had a tendency to release unknown movies back in its heyday. They did release things uncut and had many trailers on their releases. It does deserve a re-release as it was made in 2:35:1 so a new release in its original aspect ratio would give the movie justice.
The world of Steven Lessey (Stephen Young) , horror writer and movie maker, isn't looking so great. His movies are not well received by recent critics who excoriated him at a discussion panel.
