How does a composer create musical voices for a population of yellow creatures who speak their own language? If you’re Grammy Award-winning musician/composer/songwriter Heitor Pereira, it’s one groovy journey.
Playing in theaters now, Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.
But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he – alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob – ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.
The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain.

This week’s Parenthood was the dictionary definition of Parenthood doing what Parenthood does. It was a three-hanky affair (at least!), complete with charged arguments, Bravermans meddling in the business of other Bravermans, and highly emotional scenes made authentic and affecting by actors doing effortlessly natural work. It was also an episode that featured Lauren Graham awkwardly entering a room while wearing a king’s crown she purchased at Party City. Just mentioning that to ensure that no one ever, ever forgets that happened. So, was it a little corny when all the kids covered that Ben Harper song, which previously was covered by Jack Johnson on the Curious George soundtrack, for Zeek’s birthday? Sure, but Max’s blatant contempt for the exercise leavened some of the mawkishness. And once again, were there some Adam-and-Kristina-related believability issues, which shall be addressed shortly in the new, potentially regular feature of...

The storybook adventures of cheeky monkey Curious George have been entertaining mischievous youngsters since 1941. His first swing at the movies is a splashy cartoon caper which features The Man With The Yellow Hat, a trip to the jungle, a jaunt round New York and lots and lots of paint. Will Ferrell, Eugene Levy and Drew Barrymore do the voices, Jack Johnson does the songs and George does the damage.

Disney's new animated box office smash Frozen has now topped the Us album chart.
The film's accompanying soundtrack has climbed to number one on the Us Billboard 200 chart, after shifting 165,000 copies over the past week.
It has become the first soundtrack to hit the top spot since Les Miserables reached the peak in the same week last January.
What's more, it has become just the fourth soundtrack from an animated film to hit number one in the Us since charts began in 1956, reports Billboard.
Previous animated film soundtrack chart-toppers include Jack Johnson's Curious George in 2006, and Disney's Pocahontas in 1995 and The Lion King back in 1994.
Frozen's total soundtrack sales in the Us have so far hit 503,000 copies since its release on November 25.
Elsewhere, Beyoncé's self-titled album slips to two, with further sales of 130,000 copies over the past week.

Jack Johnson will be the new Saturday night headliner for attendees of this weekend's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. This news comes after it was revealed Mumford & Sons cancelled all scheduled appearances -- including Bonnaroo -- after bassist Ted Dwane had a successful brain surgery.
"I called my band and asked if they were up for it," Johnson says in a statement. "Long story short -- they are headed this way. I've got a lot of lyrics and chords to relearn by Saturday night. I was here to play the first Bonnaroo, and it is a very special festival to my band. We are excited to hit the stage again. Get well Ted!"
The last time Johnson appeared at Bonnaroo was in 2008. Meanwhile, Mumford & Sons is focusing on supporting Dwane's recovery.

It’s on all of us to pitch in and aid those affected by Hurricane Sandy, but it touches a cold, hard part of our soul to see famous people step up and do what’s right following a tragedy. They just have so much more money than us! In addition to Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Sting and Billy Joel reminding America to have a heart via song at last week’s Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together telethon, plenty of celebs did their part this week. For example…
Boy millionaire Justin Bieber pledged to donate $1 dollar of every New York-area concert ticket to the Sandy relief effort. “For every ticket sold on the #BELIEVEtour we donate 1 dollar to charity. So after talking with the team I am proud to announce that for the 4 NYC area shows,” Bieber posted to Facebook. “The Jersey Show, Brooklyn Show, and 2 Msg’s We are going...

After last week’s mostly successful kick off to the season, Saturday Night Live is back live again tonight with returning host Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and if his first time around is any indication of how tonight’s show will go, viewers should expect a pretty good time.
Back in 2009 when Gordon-Levitt hosted, he started the show with a very impressive and very physical musical number that left him literally doing flips on the Saturday Night Live stage. Although it might be hard to top this time around, Gordon-Levitt has promised to do his best, even joking during the SNL promo video (see below) that he planned to cut himself in half.
Having proved himself to be adept in the areas of music, comedy, and drama, the multi talented Gordon-Levitt has great potential to deliver a killer show tonight. My only let down is mourning the loss of “The Mellow Show,...

In what might mark one of the longest-ever droughts between #1 albums, Lionel Richie will have something to dance on the ceiling about next week, when his all-star country comeback album, Tuskegee, grabs the #1 spot on the Billboard 200. After debuting at #2 and falling to #4 last week, Richie managed to hit #1 on sales of 129,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
Thanks to a sales increase of 35 percent boosted by his prime-time CBS special, "Lionel Richie and Friends," the former Commodores singer and solo star will be back on top for the first time since 1986's Dancing on the Ceiling.
Richie's numbers were more than enough to stop Adele from reclaiming the pole position, though she did move another 92,000 copies of 21, to put her past the 8.7 million mark. It was a major comedown for Nicki Minaj,...

Los Angeles -- Some glitz, some glamor and plenty of campaign cash. President Barack Obama is hitting a reliable fundraising trail in California, tapping star donors and trading quips with Jay Leno in what is for him a well-worn path.
The president will tape an appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" on Tuesday, his second as sitting president and fourth appearance overall. Monday evening he joined actor Will Smith and basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson at a dinner at the home of producer James Lassiter. Then he mingled with Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas over canapes at the movie star couple's home just a few blocks away.
Tuesday's schedule includes a fundraiser in San Francisco featuring a performance by folk rock singer-songwriter Jack Johnson. Obama also has fundraisers scheduled in Denver later Tuesday, all part of a three-day, three-state swing through the west.

Jack Johnson was in Osaka when the earthquake and tsunami hit the Japanese coast last month, March 11.
The "Better Together" singer and his band performed as scheduled that night and then announced plans to postpone the remaining tour dates in the wake of the double disaster.
Jack Johnson had hoped to return to Japan before his summer shows, but it has not been possible to reschedule.
A post on his website reads, "The band hopes to be back to Japan soon to reunite with friends and play more music."
Jack Johnson has donated $50,000 to GlobalGiving's Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund to help the survivors of the disaster.
He also participated in the Kokua For Japan concert in Honolulu, Hawaii at the weekend, which helped raise $1.6 million to benefit the American Red Cross for the Japan earthquake and Pacific tsunami relief efforts.

Jack Johnson was joined on stage in Hawaii on Sunday, April 10, by a host of stars at a special celebrity charity concert for Japan.
The singer hit the stage with Willie Nelson, Michael McDonald and Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood for the Kokua For Japan gig, which raised $1.6 million for victims of the Japanese tsunami disaster.
“Kokua for Japan was truly a labour of love to show our care and concern for the people of Japan,” said Coralie Chun Matayoshi of the Hawaiian branch of the American Red Cross. “We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support that Hawaii’s people have shown today. Their compassion will give strength to humanitarian efforts in Japan as we help them recover from this terrible tragedy. We want to thank everyone involved in this event for their wonderful contribution to the cause of humanity.”

No, not the acoustic beach rocker Jack Johnson, a different Jack, an executive from Maryland was arrested by Federal Agents for taking kickbacks. Of course the story is gaining headline production today because of him having the same name as the musician.
When the story broke, many fans were confused and of course worried about their favorite musician being arrested.
In recent months, Johnson released his fifth album 'To the Sea,' and raised $70,000 for oil spill relief in the Gulf. His dopeness extends to giving impromptu serenades to fans before dropping verses for an AOL Sessions taping. Later this month, Johnson heads to New Zealand and Australia for a tour.
We'll see if this issue causes some questions about his Visa.

Jack Johnson has finally managed to get me to watch an entire music video of his. "At or With Me" features a cameo from none other than "Saturday Night Live" alumni Andy Samberg, who, in the past, has poked major fun at the "mellow" singer-songwriter and his Hacky Sack-lovin' fans. In the clip, Johnson and his band try to perform as Samberg proceeds to be That Guy, talking on his phone during the show, making fun of the group, telling stories loudly. His friends don sunglasses. Even I start feeling kind of punchy. Then the two spar. And by spar, I...

The song is off Johnson’s album To the Sea. Watch the douchey side of Andy Samberg below!

It has been quite a week here in the MTV Newsroom. We watched Lindsay and Paris in court, sat down with Tony Yayo for a heart-to-heart, argued about the new judges on "American Idol," watched a ton of television and watched a classic indie rock band in the middle of a crazy-ass lightning storm. All that activity has left us sort of run down, which is why it's time to hop into the hot tub and enjoy a little leisure time. You should do the same, but not before you take a stroll through the links below to catch up with anything you might have missed this week.

When 2010 finally wraps up, it seems inevitable that Jack Johnson's excellent album To the Sea will be looked over on year-end best-of lists. That will not be surprising, as Johnson usually just goes about his business moving albums and selling out arenas on his massive tour. He's a workmanlike entertainer, but that shouldn't be mistaken for mediocrity. Rather, To the Sea contains some of Johnson's best songwriting and most adventurous ideas. But since he doesn't do much to call attention to himself, he doesn't tend to stick out in the minds of the people, and always ends up being slightly underrated despite moving millions of albums since his debut.
But his just-released video for "At or With Me" should grab him some more high-profile attention, and he has "Saturday Night Live" star and viral video legend Andy Samberg to thank for anything that tumbles his way. In the clip,...

Here's a case of pretzel logic: Universal, reassured in its animation efforts thanks to the strong but not exceptional performance by Despicable Me, has decided to work on a sequel to Curious George. Hm. That is curious.
The 2006 movie, released at an optimal time for such a thing (February), produced by Imagine Entertainment, and featuring Will Ferrell, Drew Barrymore, and a Jack Johnson song, was basically a stiff. So why would it be any different now?
IGN says that Universal will bring Illumination Entertainment into things this time, and since that's the team that produced a very budget-friendly Despicable Me and an agreement has already been made to produce a sequel, the thought is the same kind of success could be out there for George.

Jack Johnson went all the way to the top with the release of his new album, "To the Sea," earning him his third #1 album on the Billboard albums chart. "To the Sea" sells 243,000 copies in its first week for the top spot. Jack Johnson's new album "To the Sea" becomes the singer-songwriters' third No. 1 on The Billboard 200, as the set racks up 234,000 copies. Just under a half of that number came from digital sales. Come on. Didn't you think this guy was over after that nutty Curious George soundtrack? Well, weren't we wrong, oh Jack Johnson judges that we were. Though his live album was wonderful for reasons mostly relating to the anthology lover in many of us, his new album To The Sea is satisfying beyond our 4:20 dreams because our favorite beach bum's poetry...er, lyrics are flowery in a way that's now post-bloom, and the music just jitters along like spastic maracas, in a good way, of course. In the first song, Johnson reminds us that "you and your heart shouldn't feel so far apart" before he blasts us with some reality checks that produce the opposite message. That's a good thing, enough with that perfect-y day, Corona commercial malaise already. On the other hand, he doesn't abandon the cosmic, its apparently new...

Santa Monica, California — Jack Johnson took fans to the sea (literally) on Monday night to celebrate the release of his aptly titled new album To the Sea. The free concert was given to show appreciation for fans who took part in a beach cleanup on Saturday in Santa Monica, which was organized by Southern California nonprofit Heal the Bay.
Three thousand fans with free tickets covered a large portion of Santa Monica's iconic pier for the show. An almost equal amount who weren't able to score tickets lined the beach below with blankets (which came in handy on the unseasonably cold night).
Prior to the show, the crowd below was treated to a rare opportunity to hear the man of the night and his band's soundcheck — thanks in part to the open-air stage.

The critical response to Mgmt's sophomore album Congratulations has been mixed so far, but their fans had no qualms downloading the psychedelic warriors' album from iTunes. According to figures provided by iTunes, the trippy disc shot right to #1 on the iTunes albums chart this week, bumping mellow strummer Jack Johnson out of the #1 position. (In fact, after one week at the top, Johnson was out of the top 10 entirely for the sales week that ended Monday).
Mgmt were followed by Ke$ha's Animal, which likely stormed back up thanks to her appearance on "Saturday Night Live," and Coheed And Cambria's Year of the Black Rainbow, which we like to think was goosed by their win in the MTV Musical March Madness competition.
