Velma Dinkley, voiced by Mindy Kaling, will have her very own “adult animated series” on HBO Max, beginning on January 12, 2023.
In the trailer, we meet Velma who finds herself in a spot when a dead body is recovered from her school locker. The genius then teams up with Shaggy, Daphne (who is her nemesis in the show) and Fred to solve the crime. Constance Wu is the voice for Daphne, while Sam Richardson lends his voice to the character of Shaggy and Glenn Howerton is Fred Jones.

"We do make a good team, don't we?" HBO Max has unveiled the first official trailer for the series Velma, the animated series focusing on Velma Dinkley, the nerdy character from the Scooby Doo series. Created by Warner Bros Animation, and developed by comedian Charlie Grandy, this series is an "adult" version of Scooby Doo, less so about the dog and more about high school mania. The series focuses on Velma Dinkley and the rest of Mystery Inc. before their official formation, pitched as a "love quadrangle" between them. "This original and humorous spin unmasks the complex and colorful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers." Mindy Kaling voices Velma, along with Sam Richardson as Norville "Shaggy" Rogers, Constance Wu as Daphne Blake, and Glenn Howerton as Fred Jones, plus Russell Peters, Melissa Fumero, Sarayu Blue, Jane Lynch, and Wanda Sykes. Velma will launch for streaming starting this week,...

HBO Max's "Velma" diverts from the original cartoon show and spin-off movies you may have grown up with. The upcoming adult-animated series, set to hit the platform on Jan. 12, centers around the nerdy, intelligent Velma Dinkley (Mindy Kaling), a teenager and aspiring detective determined to reveal the identity of the serial killer behind a string of killings that target young girls. In addition to focusing on the origins of Velma's character, the show also ties characters Daphne Blake (Constance Wu), Fred Jones (Glenn Howerton), and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers (Sam Richardson) into the story, and presents a fresh, revitalized take on how the Mystery Inc. gang came to be.
"Velma" has all of the components to make it a exciting new reboot, but many have criticized the series for not including arguably the most important character from the beloved original franchise: Scooby Doo. Though the absence of the lovable pup...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Who is your favorite voice actor for animated characters on TV? Why?
Dave Trumbore (@DrClawMD), Collider
My knee-jerk reaction was either Kevin Conroy or Mark Hamill for their roles as Batman/Bruce Wayne and The Joker, respectively, because “Batman: The Animated Series” is always on my mind. But thinking a moment more, my favorite voice actor (and arguably the best in the biz) is Frank Welker.

His name might not be a household one, but with over 800 credits and nearly 50 years in the industry, Welker’s voice definitely is.

When CBS broadcast What A Night For A Knight, the debut episode of Scooby Doo! Where Are You?, on 13 September 1969, it premiered to a topsy turvy world. Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy had been assassinated, the Manson family were still at large and if you hadn’t yet figured out times were changing, then a controversial new film called Midnight Cowboy, the first X-rated movie to win Best Picture, would change your mind.
In contrast, the members of Mystery Incorporated seemed to have stepped out of a different decade. Fred Jones, the group’s self-appointed hero/leader, would’ve been more familiar to teenaged viewers as the square-jawed protagonist who battled Blobs, mad scientists and rubber-suited monsters at the Drive-in every Saturday night.

The Lego series of video games has been top-notch quality since its first installment, and has gone to strength to strength. When the announcement came earlier in the year that they were throwing their small plastic hat into the “Toys to Life” ring, competing with games like Disney INfinity and Skylanders, interest was high. As reports came out as to which of their licenses would be available in the game, that interest sailed even higher. Confounding the old belief that “It can’t be that good”, Lego Dimensions is a perfect mix of the Lego game franchise, that the company have been doing for years, with the interactivity and variety of the collectible figures and vehicles that the company have been doing for decades.
Of all the unique things the game brings to the table is the play pad itself. Like Disney and Skylanders, figures are placed on the pad...

Scooby Doo has been an iconic brand for 45 years. Since first appearing in 1969, the children’s show has undergone a variety of over-hauls and re-imaginings, with different versions incorporating ‘new’ characters and updated settings. The popularity of the most recent iteration – Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated, which aired on Cartoon Network from 2010-2013 – has evidently set dollar signs flashing in the eyes of Warner Bros. studio executives once again, and a cinematic re-boot is now being planned.
Originally created for Hanna-Barbera Productions by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, the premise of Scooby-Doo sees four teenagers – Daphne Blake, Fred Jones, Velma Dinkley and Norville “Shaggy” Rogers, along with the titular talking Great Dane – solve mysteries that initially appear to involve supernatural creatures and events. Essentially serving to de-bunk conspiracies, the team’s finely honed powers of deduction and trap-setting always lead them to the right conclusion.
In 2002, a live-action feature film was released.

Zoinks! Aliya provides a rundown of 10 enjoyable Scooby-Doo animated movies. Scrappy isn't invited...
For a Great Dane, Scooby-Doo has had an impressive innings. He’s now 44 years old, and has been through a number of mediums: TV series, videogames, stage plays, and many movies. In all that time the Us version of Scooby has been voiced by only five actors (the original actor, Don Messick, played him from 1969 to 1994), and there remains something so familiar and reassuring about Scooby, even as the storylines and the entanglements of the Scooby gang change around him. Nowadays in Mystery Incorporated Velma may be on/off dating Shaggy, and Fred and Daphne may be having problems with their relationship, but Scooby remains as cowardly and hungry as ever.

*spoiler alert. Director: Paul Edwards. Writer: Andrew Dabb. Cast: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Lisa Chandler, Faustino Di Bauda, and Andrew Zachar. When a man's heart pops out like a Walter Lantz cartoon, just what is CW's latest episode of "Supernatural," "Hunteri Heroici" up to? In what may be the strangest episode so far, perhaps watching too many 'toons can distort reality. In this case, to look at real representations of cartoon violence can prove disturbingly gooey when the anvil drops. But for Fred Jones (Mike Farrell), no relation to the Scooby Doo character of the same name, he shows that he can manipulate the world around him if he so desires. For some people, watching cartoons provides a means of escapism. They inject humour into the dull everyday life of growing old. Jones' argument for their purpose is great. Writer Andrew Dabb has crafted a defining moment that...

Did you enjoy the use of the cartoon world?
Carissa: Not as much as I expected. I thought it would be much funnier, and I felt the cartoon aspect was really masking a much deeper despair in both Sam and Cas. For that reason, it didn't really work for me.
Alice: Strangely, I did. I’ve seen too many failures with live action and cartoons (I’m talking to you Space Jam) but this worked. They didn’t carry it too far and they had the right amount of believability. Plus, you don’t get more...

Supernatural, Season 8, Episode 8: “Hunteri Heroici”
Written by Andrew Dabb
Directed by Paul A. Edwards
Airs Wednesdays at 9pm (Et) on CW
The return of Castiel from purgatory last week opened a new chapter in the eighth season of Supernatural; while the story of what happened to Castiel and Dean in purgatory was resolved, the looming question was what the angel would do now. A return to heaven was not an immediately feasible option for the angel, both because of what he had done with the purgatory souls in him, and because of Naomi, the angel who introduced herself at the end of last week, most likely having barred Castiel’s entry. Staying with the Winchesters, and going on hunts with them, thus seems like the most viable course of action for the angel, and this week explores the ramifications of that, adding another enjoyable episode to an already strong eighth season run.

Oklahoma City, Ok. We open with a man waiting in the park. A woman walks up to him, and they have a brief small talk about how he wasn’t sure if she would come, but she did anyway… when suddenly the woman hears a strange thumping noise.
It takes a few moments to realize that the noise is coming from the man, and before they can fathom what the heck is going on, the man’s heart jumps out of his chest, spraying the woman with blood.
Welcome to Crazyville, Supernatural, folks!
Cut to some Gas n’ Sip where Sam is just finishing up his phone call, when Dean approaches him, two beers in hand. He uncaps them and hands one to Sam, and Sam fills him in on what's been going on with Kevin and Mama Tran.
Apparently, Garth has safely moved the Trans to his safe houseboat (No Comments!

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 8, Episode 8 of The CW's "Supernatural," entitled "Hunteri Heroici."
Apparently, laughter really is the best medicine. It's fitting that an episode of "Supernatural" so devoted to helping a tired old man face reality also helped two of our characters come to terms with their own sense of purpose, and "Hunteri Heroici" managed -- as many of the show's best episodes do -- to effortlessly blend humor and pathos into one satisfying, if surreal, concoction.
The last episode, "A Little Slice of Kevin," dealt with Dean's skewed perception of reality, since his misplaced guilt over "abandoning" Castiel in Purgatory was dramatically affecting the way he viewed the world and himself. With Castiel's return and his revelation about what really happened when Dean escaped, Dean seemed to be in a much better place this week, opening up to Cas and expressing how...

Last night’s Supernatural was, in one word, bizarre. In two words? Bizarre and fantastic.
The episode centered around Sam, Dean and new hunter Cas looking into a series of strange deaths in which the victims’ deaths were seemingly ripped right out of a classic cartoon — a man’s heart exploded out of his chest, someone was killed by an anvil, etc. But, surprisingly, as far as cases go, this one didn’t have too many twists and turns.

Things got a little looney on this week's Supernatural.
Unfortunately, the wascally wabbit didn't make an appearance as a terrorizing toon, but Sam and Dean were on the hunt to figure out why certain robberies and murders felt far more animated than usual.
"Hunteri Heroici" could certainly have been a hate it or love it episode, leaving the dark serious aspects of the show on hold and instead attempting to tickle the funny bone by dropping anvils and making hearts literally beat out of the chest.
The concept was creative and right up Sam and Dean's alley on the weirdness level. How gross was the "X" marks the spot body splatter? And while the final fight sequence stuck to the cartoon rules of using frying pans and guns that shoot out "bang" flags, the noises took me a little bit out of the moment.
Yes, they went right along with it all,...

Supernatural is setting itself up for a new breed of angels when it returns next month for it’s eighth season and is bringing in Amanda Tapping to help bring these winged characters to life. I’m not sure if this means good or bad things for Supernatural, considering how overused the angels can sometimes feel. It’s not that I don’t love them – who doesn’t enjoy Castiel? – but I prefer monsters over angels when it comes to who I want to see most often. But that doesn’t mean I’m not intrigued by the idea of a new bunch of angels, so long as they are handled properly.
According to TVLine, the first of this new group of angels to be cast is Naomi, who will be played by Amanda Tapping. Tapping will have a major recurring role in Season 8, with her first appearance being in...

Last week saw the release of the second season of the brilliant The Walking Dead, one of the best and most talked-about television programmes currently on the air – and about to kick off with its anticipated third season.
And this week brings with it the release of one of the year’s most successful films in the form of The Hunger Games, very much one of the biggest blockbusters of 2012, beginning what is set to become an immense franchise in the years to come.
There are a lot of films coming to the shelves this week, so I shall press on.
My picks of the week:
Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games & Lasse Hallström’s Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.
The Office: An American Workplace – Season 7 & Boardwalk Empire – Season 2.
And, of course, the Blu-ray release of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is the sort of – pardon the pun – “baity” title which sounds so self-consciously affected that it could quite easily sour expectations before the film even begins. Nevertheless, get past the daft title – which is uttered innumerable times throughout – and you get a surprisingly charming, if undeniably uneven dramedy which glides on the immaculate chemistry between its leads.
The yearnings of a powerful Yemeni sheik (Amr Waked) to fish for salmon at will is certainly an odd premise in which to situate a politico-romantic comic drama, yet it is a mix that, in spite of its flaws, actually works. Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt) is a representative of the sheik, looking to source salmon and expertise from British scientist Fred Jones (Ewan McGregor), who quickly dismisses the idea as absurd. With some not-so-gentle nudging – and financial remuneration – from the Pm’s press secretary...

This quirk-loaded British comedy feels like it features Bill Nighy, even though it doesn't
There's a high level of machine-tooled quirkiness in this quirky-feelgood British comedy, written by Simon Beaufoy, directed by Lasse Hallström and based on the 2006 bestseller by Paul Torday. And yet it feels as if you've seen it many times before. Bill Nighy isn't in it, for example, and yet afterwards I had an intense memory of Bill Nighy being in it, the way amputees can feel their toes itching. Ewan McGregor is Dr Fred Jones, the uptight fisheries scientist who finds himself dragged into a wild scheme to introduce salmon fishing to the Yemen, dreamed up by a fishing-crazed sheikh (Amr Waked). Grumpy Dr Jones is pretty testy at first with the sheikh's beautiful English aide, Harriet (Emily Blunt). But as the desert is irrigated, so romance blooms, and the salmon of love leaps in the river of emotion.

When an idealistic sheikh persuades a fisheries expert to try and introduce salmon to the Yemen, the expert soon finds himself himself out of his depth, but love blossoms along the way.
It's hard to see the fish for the froth in Lasse Hallstrom's twee adaptation of Paul Torday's novel. Ewan McGregor attempts - and fails - to disappear into the character of the perma-cardiganed Dr Fred Jones, a career civil servant and long-time fish fan, whose hobby is making intricate fishing flies.

When conservative fisheries expert Dr. Fred Jones (Ewan McGregor) receives an unexpected request from legal representative Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt), he finds himself embroiled in a wealthy sheikh’s ludicrous dream of introducing salmon fishing into the Yemen. After the project receives backing from the British government as a way of diverting attention away from their latest blunder in the Middle-East, Fred slowly finds the faith needed to turn a dream into a reality.
Adapted from Paul Torday’s acclaimed novel, screenwriter Simon Beaufoy employs neat tactics to ensure the narrative plays out at a believable, tempered pace, cleverly playing on the social satire to ensure the parable-like tone is established from the offset. Where the first half revels in the silliness of the sheikh’s dream, brilliantly captured in the way Fred tries every method possible to bypass the mammoth task put in his command, the second tapers off somewhat,...

Once upon a time, Saturday mornings consisted of getting up early and watching four-hour blocks of cartoons. With the entertainment ranging from superheroes to "Smurfs," a favorite of many children was a cowardly "Great Dane" and his four teenage human friends solving supernatural mysteries. Premiering September 13, 1969, Scooby-Doo and the Mystery, Inc. gang are still having adventures to this day. However, it's the iconic original shows - Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, The New Scooby-Doo Movies and The Scooby-Doo Show - that produced a slew of fear inducing monsters and g-g-g-ghosts that remain prominent in many of those children's now adults minds. Each episode of the program took the teens - Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers along with Scooby to a location abandoned amusement parks, concert halls, ski slopes and set up exactly what they were good at solving: a mystery. On occasion, Scooby's cousin Scooby Dum...

I’d be remiss if I didn’t explain the two most pressing points about Salmon Fishing in the Yemen right up front. Yes, they do get salmon in the Yemen, and of course our charming leads Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt get together. I don’t think that’s a spoiler as much as a romantic comedy stable. Romcoms are always about the journey, not the destination and this is one journey that is absolutely worth taking.
The foundation of the plot comes at the whims of two very important and extremely powerful people. One is a rich Yemeni Sheikh (Amr Waked) who wants to bring his favorite Scottish past time, salmon fishing, to his homeland in order to foster good will and cooperation amongst its fractured populace. Never mind the fact that his homeland is relatively baron of all things that scream out “this is a good place to fish.

Picking on "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" makes us feel like a bit of a bully, as though we're mercilessly teasing that super nice but incredibly dumb girl in class. It's an affable, inoffensive British comedy that just wants you to like it so much that you can't help but snicker behind its back. Or are we the only ones who are that cruel?
Based on Paul Torday's novel, "Salmon Fishing In The Yemen" follows the efforts of a team to bring a salmon run to the Middle Eastern country at the request of an ambitious sheikh/amateur fisherman (Amr Waked, "Syriana"). The sheikh's representative Harriet (Emily Blunt) approaches fisheries expert Dr. Fred Jones (Ewan McGregor), who initially scoffs at the idea, then is reluctantly tasked with the enormous, multi-million dollar project. Meanwhile, the British prime minister is tired of all the bad press coming out of the area,...

Mike Mills's indie darling "Beginners" has earned the simple short hand as the film that finally won Christopher Plummer his Oscar. While it was a story of underdog triumph for the 82-year-old actor, it has left its star, Ewan McGregor in a familiar spot: completely overlooked. McGregor -- who shot to fame with "Trainspotting" in 1997 and has appeared in some of your favorite movies since then -- often gets the cold shoulder when people discuss the best actors of this generation. Fortunately, McGregor will have no problem standing out in "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen," his latest film which finds him wooing Emily Blunt, dealing with political bureaucracy, and -- duh -- salmon fishing in the yemen.

Playing Gloucester in "King Lear," Fred Jones bellows, "I shall see winged vengeance overtake such children." Paul Marino as Cornwall responds in a towering rage, "See't shalt thou never. Fellow, hold him fast. Upon these eyes of thine I'll set my foot." Enacting an elaborate pantomime of gouging out Gloucester's eye, Marino cups in his palm a glossy white golf ball, adorned with dangling red elastic strips to simulate severed veins. He holds it up for all to see while Jones screams in anguish. The two actors are not on a stage but in a crowded subway car traveling between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Jones is on the floor, his back propped up against a floor-to-ceiling pole, and Marino hovers over him. Some riders look puzzled; others are grinning; still others pretend nothing is happening. Working the subterranean depths for a year, sometimes up to 20 hours a week, Marino and Jones,...

Paul Torday's novel was published back in 2006, but it's been caught and reeled in by Lasse Hallstrom and Ewan McGregor, and now a new Salmon Fishing In The Yemen trailer has just gone live at Yahoo.
If you've not read the book, you'll need to know that this is the story of a Yemeni sheik (Amr Waked) who has the visionary plan to introduce - you guessed it - salmon fishing in the Yemen. Ewan McGregor is Fred Jones, a lowly fisheries scientist in the British government, who thinks the scheme is ludicrous, but has it forced upon him by the Prime Minister's super-keen press secretary Bridget Maxwell (Kristin Scott-Thomas).
On one level it's a satire of spin-centric, media-savvy politics, and on another it's a thoughtful measuring of different belief systems. The emphasis of this trailer, however, seems very much to be on the burgeoning lurrve between McGregor's dull...

According to Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios – The Howling Commandos will appear in the Joe Johnston directed, The First Avenger: Captain America starring Chris Evans….but they may not be specifically called The Howling Commandos.
According to Devin over at Chud.
“‘The characters will be there as part of the larger Marvel Universe,’ Feige told me. One character he would confirm was Gabe Jones, a black guy known for carrying his trumpet into battle.”
So, who are The Howling Commandos?

There are a few key things you should know about NBC's a capella singing competition show "The Sing-Off," which premiered Monday night (December 14). First, it's not very good. Unless you're one of those people who are super-enthusiastic about the Whiffenpoofs, singing groups get pretty grating after a few minutes — even the good ones. On the bright side, the talent assembled to judge the competition is a top-shelf group of folks who could use the work. Plus, it's hosted by the always-charming Nick Lachey, who should really have his own talk show (or perhaps some sort of outward-bound experience type of thing — like "Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations").
The judges include Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men and former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, but the highlight of Monday night's episode was Ben Folds, the manic piano player and former frontman of the Ben Folds Five. Folds is one of the most underrated songwriters of his generation,...
