Exclusive: Award-winning filmmakers Daniel Junge and Sam Pollard are partnering on a documentary about the late Archbishop Carl Bean, the pioneering gay African American singer turned pastor and AIDS activist.
Production is underway on the feature I Was Born This Way, which takes its title from Bean’s 1977 Motown Records gay disco anthem that celebrated LGBTQ identity and later became the inspiration for Lady Gaga’s hit “Born This Way.” Junge, who won an Oscar for the 2012 documentary short Saving Face, and multiple Emmy-winner Pollard (When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts), are working with Bean’s estate to make their film.
The documentary will include “exclusive, in-depth interviews” with Bean filmed before his death in September 2021 at age 77, and will also incorporate “never before seen archival footage and rotoscope animated recreations,” according to a release from the filmmakers.

The Pakistan Academy Selection Committee has selected Sarmad Khoosat’s “Circus of Life” (aka “Zindagi Tamasha”) as the country’s entry in the 2020 Oscars’ international feature category.
The film had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in 2019, where it won the prestigious Kim Ji-seok award.
Set in Lahore, the film chronicles the chaos that ensues in the life of a staid, devout elderly man when a video featuring him gets uploaded onto social media.
After being cleared by the censor board, the film had its release in Pakistan in January disrupted when a political party said that the content was blasphemous.
“I did not make ‘Zindagi Tamasha’ to hurt, offend or malign anyone. It’s a story about a ‘good enough Muslim’ – there was/is no mention of a sect, party or faction of any sort,” Khoosat said in a letter he wrote to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan in January.

The Challenger space shuttle explosion in 1986 was one of America’s most visceral tragedies. In real time, millions of Americans, including school children across the country, witnessed the shuttle disintegrate from a solid rocket booster failure, claiming the lives of all seven astronauts on board. The mission was of particular national interest because a high school teacher named Christa McAulife was selected to become the first private citizen in space, leading to increased media attention and fanfare.
Countless shows, documentaries, and books have covered all angles of the NASA mission gone horribly awry. Netflix’s new documentary series, Challenger: The Final Flight, stands out by telling the human stories behind the accident, including first-hand accounts from the decision makers at NASA and the astronauts’ families whose lives were changed irrevocably on the morning of January 28, 1986.

When the Challenger space shuttle exploded 73 seconds after its launch in January 1986, killing all seven crew members on board, Daniel Junge and Steven Leckart were school-aged kids watching it all happen on television. Now they are the directors of Netflix’s four-part “Challenger: The Final Flight” docuseries, and they hope the lessons learned from that tragic mission will resonate with American audiences amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“This was our Kennedy moment; this was our 9/11 moment,” Junge told TheWrap.
If there’s one thing to be gleaned from the fatal NASA space shuttle mission, its that listening to scientific data can sometimes be the difference between life and death.
“It does feel like the right message now, just in terms of the value of science and the value of teachers, which is really important right now and will hopefully resonate,” Junge said. “And also, no matter how you feel about Reagan,...

“NASA was always the good guys, the right stuff,” one interviewee says in the trailer. “You realize they’re really rolling the dice.”

Directed by Rich Fox, the terror-inducing documentary focuses on a culture that has embraced fear-seeking, interactive entertainment.”
The most extreme immersive horror experience in America is called “Blackout.” Deemed “the extreme event of the year” by The New York Times, it is not for the faint of heart; it is a terrifying, psychosexual thrill-ride designed to play on people’s deepest psychological fears.

Few things are as exhilarating to witness as the unbridled passion and joy that builders put into their Lego creations, and the same can be said of watching children play with these toys as well. That’s right. Lego building blocks are a popular toy for the imaginations of both the young and the old. Having been around since the 1950s, this timeless toy has a fascinating history and a seemingly unstoppable appeal for generation after generation. But, how did it all start and what makes it such a juggernaut?
Directors Kief Davidson and Daniel Junge have taken it upon themselves to explore and reveal the very essence of those questions and, as a result, have created what must be the most comprehensive and thorough detailing of one of the greatest toy inventions… ever! A Lego Brickumentary is narrated by comedic actor Jason Bateman, whose voice is recognizable, but played...

A Lego Brickumentary
Written by Daniel Junge, Kief Davidson and Davis Coombe
Directed by Kief Davidson and Daniel Junge
Denmark, 2015
Documentaries on fandom often end up excessive celebration without any of the self-reflection that the genre usually provides. A Lego Brickumentary is fun, but it may not appeal to anyone who isn’t already familiar with the brand. Lego fans are a passionate bunch, and not just kids anymore. AFOLs (Adult fan of Lego) are taking the bricks and creating a movement for themselves. The Lego Movie took over the world last year, but Lego has been dominating the landscape as the number two toy company in the world for years, thanks, in part, to their super passionate fan-base.
BrickCon illustrates how the Danish phenomenon surpassed the even grandest expectations of executives. Thousands of fans flock to Seattle for such awesome sights as a replication of Rivendell built by the award-winning Alice Finch.

Ever since The Lego Movie hit theaters, the building block toy has been an even bigger sensation than it was before, and we've featured some cool Lego videos all paying tribute to our favorite films. Of course, Lego has been a toy brand that has been a huge part of generations of kids and their parents, time and time again. Now a new documentary called simply A Lego Brickumentary is coming to theaters this summer, narrated by Jason Bateman (who gets his own Lego minifigure to guide us), to dive into the history, legacy and limitless imagination that the Danish toy group has provided. Looks pretty cool. Watch! Here's the first trailer for Daniel Junge & Kief Davidson's A Lego Brickumentary, from Apple: A Lego Brickumentary (it's no longer "Beyond the Brick") is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Daniel Junge (Saving Face) and Oscar-nominated director Kief Davidson (Open Heart). "Fast, faster, and disaster"
-- Johnny Knoxville, producer of Being Evel
Generations have been affected over several decades by the spirit of legendary icon Evel Knievel. As a child growing up in the 70s, my own most prized possession was my Evel Knievel stunt cycle and action figure. "Popping a wheelie" on my bicycle was an exhilarating micro-attempt to emulate the excitement of witnessing Evel's televised stunt jumps.
Filmmaker Daniel Junge was influenced enough to tell the complex story and legacy of a hero who wasn't always the good guy in his new documentary Being Evel. Junge has artistically created a thorough portrayal of an extraordinary man who was inherently flawed. Knievel's lavish spending and frequent womanizing were quite public, as were his temper and stubbornness. As a showman and king of the daredevils, Knievel set the foundation for the culture of action and extreme sports in the United States.

Amy Schumer and Bill Hader in TrainwreckPhoto: Universal Pictures With Sundance just wrapping up and Berlin starting up in a few days, we are now immersed in the year-long barrage of film festivals. One such festival in South By Southwest. A few weeks back they announced the first seven films of their program, including the opening night film Brand: A Second Coming. Today, they have revealed the rest of the features to be shown in March (except for the midnight program), and some of it has me very excited. The bigger titles announced do not do much for me. Paul Feig's Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and the Will Ferrell/Kevin Hart starrer Get Hard leave a lot to be desired in terms of anticipation, as does a work in progress cut of Judd Apatow's latest film Trainwreck. I'm guessing an Apatow work in progress is probably around three and a half hours.

"He was a superhero, a real living superhero," "Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville told EW about stuntman extraordinaire Evel Knievel, adding "he was the ultimate showman/salesman. He was so smart, and he was so charismatic. He could talk anyone into anything. He’s one of the great characters of the 20th century, period." Knoxville shares that sentiment in this exclusive clip from the forthcoming documentary "Being Evel," premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. Co-produced by Knoxville and directed by Daniel Junge ("Fight Church," the Oscar winning "Saving Face"), the film takes viewers back to a time when a real life superhero captured the nation's imagination in the 1970s, risking life and limb (and often broke many in the process) to accomplish fantastic, unprecedented feats. And as you'll see in this exclusive clip, with Knievel visiting Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, sometimes those attempts went horribly,...

Evel Knievel is synonymous with daredevil, but unless you saw him at his heights in the late 1960s and early 1970s, it's difficult to imagine how he built that reputation into something millions of people actually cared about. Beginning with Knievel's disastrous attempt to jump the fountains at Caesar's Palace in 1967—which made him a star once it aired on ABC's Wide World of Sports—millions tuned into his stunts to see if he could defy death one more time. In Being Evel, the documentary that debuts on Jan. 25 at the Sundance Film Festival, director Daniel Junge (They Killed Sister Dorothy...

The holidays are winding down and that means we at Ioncinema.com are gearing up for our annual pilgrimage to Park City where an A-list of documentaries is now set to premiere. Earlier this month Tabitha Jackson and the Sundance doc programming team let the cats out of the bag, unsurprisingly announcing much anticipated Us Doc Competition titles such as the Ross Brothers’ Western, Louie Psihoyos’ Racing Extinction, Marc Silver’s 3 1/2 Minutes and Lyric Cabral and David Felix Sutcliffe’s (T)Error, along with some surprises like Bryan Carberry and Clay Tweel’s bizarro Kickstarted doc Finders Keepers (see trailer below). Having been produced by the fine folks behind The King of Kong and Undefeated, the film bears all the markings of its well regarded pedigree, yet appears to be of even odder ilk, following the story that unfolded when a severed human foot was discovered in a grill bought at a North Carolina auction.
