Last month, Mock The Week was cancelled after 17 years on air. The satirical comedy was only one of a flurry of modern panel shows featuring teams of comedians, spawning from the format used in Have I Got News For You that emerged during the nineties and noughties. Taking cues from long-running Hignfy which hit TV screens in 1990, popular series such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks and the anarchic, absurd Shooting Stars were followed by the likes of Qi, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Would I Lie To You?, Celebrity Juice and, of course, Mock The Week. But with ratings plummeting and cancellations abounding, is it high time the genre called it a day?

These shows were initially a great way to finish off your evening after a long hard day at school or work, just like a late night chat show helps to wind our American friends down after the watershed.

Cilla Black was a hugely popular entertainer for over five decades, presenting some of the biggest variety shows and teaming up with the biggest stars.
As the country says goodbye to 'Our Cilla' today (August 20) at her funeral in Liverpool, we've chosen a bunch of hilarious and moving moments from her successful career.
1. Meeting a real-life Mr Bean on the real Blind Date
Blind Date was known for its wacky contestants looking for love, and you can't get much wackier than Geoff Carter. Despite wearing a ludicrous shellsuit and carrying a Sooty puppet, he managed to win a date to the Seychelles. Suffice to say, they didn't get married.
2. Owning an undercover journalist on Blind Date
Cilla had her major comeback with Blind Date, a show which had so many memorable moments. One of the most controversial was when Cilla publicly outed a Cosmopolitan journalist who posed as a contestant,...

Never Mind the Buzzcocks has been cancelled after 28 series, with the BBC confirming the much-loved show will not be returning.
The ingenious - and often hilarious - pop music panel quiz arrived on screens way back in 1996, and ran for over 260 episodes.
Hosts including Mark Lamarr, Simon Amstell and Rhod Gilbert have appeared alongside team captains Phil Jupitus, Sean Hughes, Bill Bailey and Noel Fielding. Here are some of the greatest moments.
1. Boys will be boys!
Preston took an immediate dislike to being described by Simon Amstell as a "professional celebrity" on introduction, before Amstell joked that his band The Ordinary Boys have no fans.
But it was when he began to read extracts from Preston's then-wife Chantelle Houghton's biography - with the line "The photoshoot was for the Daily Mail, which made me feel really posh and upmarket" - that he stormed off the show in disgust.

Lee Evans has revealed that he has no plans to return to Hollywood, describing his experience of working in movies in the '90s as "terrible" and "lonely".
In an interview with Phill Jupitus on the behalf of Digital Spy, Evans spoke candidly about his time in the Us, when he starred in movies such as The Fifth Element, MouseHunt and There's Something About Mary.
"It was terrible," said Evans. "It was really lonely. I lived there for two years.
"I learnt a lot - I would never trade that for anything - but on a personal level, I really missed my wife and daughter.
"If I ever went back. I'd have to go in and get straight out."
Evans was coy when asked whether it was true that he turned down a movie offer from Martin Scorsese, revealing that he did speak with the iconic director at a three-hour meeting in a London hotel.

As The 1975's Matt Healy is questioned about his time supporting The Rolling Stones, prepare for bad impressions, inappropriateness and lots of laughter.
The clip ends with team captain Noel Fielding exclaiming to Rhod Gilbert that "this is the rudest show I've ever been on", while guest Professor Green quips: "Well his name is Rhod."
Series 28 of Never Mind the Buzzcocks returns with Gilbert as the new permanent host.

In the series 28 opener, Gilbert, Fielding and Phill Jupitus are joined by guests Healy, Green, comedian Roisin Conaty and Gabby Logan.

Michael Caine's early films defined the look of an era, but with scores by John Barry, Quincy Jones and Sonny Rollins they also defined its soundrack
There is a kind of music in Michael Caine's voice: deceptively flat, barely inflected, emitting just the tiniest glints of detached insolence and laconic menace as it maps the area between the pre-war docklands community of Rotherhithe, his birthplace, and Elephant and Castle, where his family was rehoused in a prefab built on bomb-damaged land not far from the location of Shakespeare's theatres. Few people alive know more about the actor's craft than Caine, none is more gifted in the art of underplaying, and that voice is integral to his virtuosity.
But there is music of a more conventional kind in the films that made him famous – when the former Maurice Micklewhite rather unexpectedly became the model of a new kind of English leading man,...

Laura Whitmore has spoken to Digital Spy about Huey Morgan angrily storming off Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
The presenter was sitting at the same desk as Morgan when he smashed a mug after apparently falling out with guest hosts Rizzle Kicks, showering her and team captain Phil Jupitus with debris.
Despite looking visibly shocked during the incident, which was broadcast on BBC Two last night (November 4), Whitmore told DS that she now wants to laugh off 'muggate'.

Huey Morgan stunned fellow celebrity contestants on Never Mind the Buzzcocks last night (November 4) by smashing his mug in anger before walking out after an altercation with hosts Rizzle Kicks.
It's quite been a while since the BBC show saw such a dramatic outburst from a disgruntled guest. So we present 15 similar moments of madness and controversy from the series - from Preston stomping off, to Dappy flying in - below:
Boys will be boys!
Preston took an immediate dislike to being described by Simon Amstell as a "professional celebrity" on introduction, before Amstell joked that his band The Ordinary Boys have no fans. But it was when he began to read extracts from Preston's then-wife Chantelle Houghton's biography - with the line "The photoshoot was for the Daily Mail, which made me feel really posh and upmarket" - that he stormed off the show in disgust. Fun Lovin' Criminals and 6 Music DJ Huey Morgan storms off BBC Two quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks tonight after falling out with hosts Rizzle Kicks.
The singer started sulking after Rizzle Kicks used Fun Lovin' Criminals lyrics in the 'Next Lines' round of the competition, a standard practice on the comedy music show.
Watch the video of Huey Morgan's Buzzcocks strop:
Noticing that Morgan was unhappy, Rizzle Kicks asked: "Are you alright with that?"
Morgan replied: "I'm totally alright with that, I just thought you guys might do something different for a change."
The hip-hop duo reply: "It's part of the game Huey... It's next lines mate."
Growing increasingly frustrated, Morgan ends the game by smashing his mug on the desk, with pieces shattering across his desk near teammates Phill Jupitus and Laura Whitmore.
"Huey, it's the game bro, I say a line, you sing the other line.

We’ve put a spotlight on some of the UK Christmas telly specials you won’t want to miss this festive season…
You know that pub conversation we’ve all had, the one about what you’d show an alien race on the brink of wiping out planet Earth to convince them we are essentially a well-meaning, productive, and often beautiful species that deserves to live? No contest: a Christmas issue of the Radio Times.
In 1969, an astronaut walked on the moon and someone thought up the Christmas Radio Times, both of them landmarks of brilliant stuff achieved by humans. They must have been thinner then - not astronauts, copies of the Radio Times - back when there were fewer TV channels than there are now Shrek films.
Between the covers of that hefty double edition sits the industry and imagination of generations. It...

Comedy news from Edinburgh
It's week two of the fringe, and unease about low audience figures continues to thrum beneath the surface jollity. Richard Herring broke cover at the end of last week, writing on his blog about his own experience of low sales for his Underbelly show Talking Cock. "It's a shame that I have taken the chance on a bigger venue," he writes, "in the year when the Olympics/the recession/the dissatisfaction with high prices of everything in Edinburgh (delete or add as applicable – there's no definitive answer) has sucked out all the punters as if someone opened the door on a spacecraft."
In a thoughtful rumination on the subject, Herring predicts that the Edinburgh comedy bubble is about to burst. "It's open...
