“Dickinson” showrunner Alena Smith detailed the challenges of making the Apple TV+ period drama show starring Hailee Steinfeld as its queer female lead, playing poet Emily Dickinson. Apple kept her in the dark about the show’s success, Smith said, which made creating the show significantly more difficult.
The first season of the series arrived on the streamer in 2019, the second one on Jan. 8, 2021. Season 3 concluded the arc Smith envisioned for the project and came out Nov. 5, 2021.
Describing what drove streaming services to make creative projects, Smith explained to Harper’s Magazine that streamers were looking to grow their subscriber numbers by taking big creative swings that pulled in new audiences.
“It’s like a whole world of intellectuals and artists got a multibillion-dollar grant from the tech world,” Smith said. “But we mistook that, and were frankly actively gaslit into thinking that that was because they cared about art.

Afire.Paula Beer has said that she wants to avoid any clear overlaps with her personal life as she’s preparing a character. To her credit, there’s something about her acting that eschews biographical readings: she invites us into the present as her characters are experiencing it. Beer, who was born in Mainz, Germany, has been acting since she was a child; she was 14 when she stepped onto the set of her first movie, Chris Kraus’s The Poll Diaries (2010). Just a few years later, she won the Marcello Mastroianni Award for her turn as a young widow in François Ozon’s World War I drama Frantz (2016)—a performance that showed how, even in the framework of a fairly traditional romantic drama, Beer could hint subtly at her character’s interiority beyond what was on the page. From there, it was a quick jump to the cycle of films...

After a stellar 2017 full of exceptional TV shows, we almost forgot that we might have to say goodbye to a few of them in the following year. Now that we've reached November, plenty of networks have already given shows like Good Behavior, One Mississippi, Damnation, Ghosted, Roseanne, and The Break With Michelle Wolf the ax. Amazon and Netflix have been big offenders, but series on networks like NBC, The CW, and ABC aren't safe, either. Pour one out for the shows that have taken their last TV gasp ahead.

Good news for early adopters of The Tick, I Love Dick and the really rather bizarre Jean-Claude Van Johnson – Amazon has handed out series orders for all three comedy pilots after they were released for Prime members last month.
Confirmation comes to us via Deadline, revealing that the online giant enjoyed its most-watched pilot season to date. That’s quite the feat, with Joe Lewis, Head of Half-Hour Series at Amazon Studios, noting that “these pilots were vast in scope, disruptive in tone, challenging in story and sometimes even funny. It’s rewarding to see customers embrace them in such a huge way. We can’t wait to premiere these series next year on Prime Video.”

In 1996, Chris Kraus traveled to Germany to attend the Berlin Film Festival. Even though the Berlinale rejected her experimental film, she was invited to screen it at the European Film Market, the business epicenter of the festival. “A profitable trade show in which product deemed unsuitable for the Festival is bought and sold,” is how Kraus later described the Efm in her 2000 book, Aliens & Anorexia. Arriving in Berlin with neither pre-arranged business meetings, networking contacts, nor party invites, the Efm was “like Room 101 in Orwell’s 1984, a cavalcade of horrors where you confront your deepest fears,” […]...

Easily Amazon’s runaway hit, “Transparent” has been a big success for creator and director Jill Soloway, who put an Emmy on her shelf thanks to the show. To Hellman and Back: An Evening with Monte Hellman is set for this evening at the Walter Reade Theater, and here's how the New York Times' Dave Kehr recommends you be there if you can: "The undisputed master of the existential road movie (Two-Lane Blacktop, 1971) will be present for a 6 pm sneak preview of his new feature, Road to Nowhere, to be followed by a rare screening of Mr Hellman's magnificently bleak adaptation of Charles Willeford's novel Cockfighter, starring Warren Oates as an itinerant gambler. A discussion with Mr Hellman follows the screening, as does a book party celebrating the reissue of the Willeford novel from PictureBox Books."

I love a good period drama. Show me one that has a tinge of creep factor and I’ve even more interested. And then there’s something like The Poll Diaries, Chris Kraus’ follow-up to 2006’s Four Minutes which introduces newcomer Paula Beer as Oda, a young girl who returns to Poll to live with her morbid scientist father just before the outbreak of world war one.
I was first struck by the sheer beauty of this trailer and how it seamlessly treads from lush, breathtaking scenery to images of a man removing a human brain. It’s a little shocking at first but the transition adds to the feeling of impending doom that lines this tale of self discovery. It's also worth mentioning that the film is shot by a woman - cinematographer Daniela Knapp; a rarity always worth noting.

Chris Kraus was born in Goettingen, Germany and studied at the German Film and Television Academy (Dffb) in Berlin, where he now teaches. Already a noted scriptwriter before making his debut as a director, Kraus scored a notable success with his first feature, Scherbentanz (Shattered Glass, 2002), which was awarded two Bavarian Film Prizes, among other awards. His second film, Vier Minuten (Four Minutes, 2006), was one of the most successful German films of past years and won over 50 German and international awards, including the Audience Prize at San Francisco's 2007 Frameline Film Festival. In The Poll Diaries (2010) [official German site], Kraus continues his tradition of introducing sensational young talents to the movie-going public: after Hannah Herzsprung in Four Minutes, it is now Paula Beer's turn to shine as Oda von Siering, the adolescent protagonist of The Poll Diaries, which boasted its world premiere at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) and is now poised for its U.

In addition to the previously announced titles, Tiff just keeps adding more great stuff to their line-up.
The most recent announcement (I’m sure there are more to come), includes a couple of interesting titles along with a couple of heavy weights. Other titles which sound promising include Mitch Glazer’s Passion Play, a fable starring Mickey Rourke and sex bomb Megan Fox, Álex de la Iglesia’s insane parody about the Spanish Civil War with clowns The Last Circus and Benoît Jacquot’s Deep in the Woods.
All of the new additions after the break.

The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really. Toronto -- The Toronto International Film Festival turned up the star wattage Tuesday with bookings for the latest work by Clint Eastwood, Danny Boyle and John Carpenter.
A long-awaited theatrical release date for Miramax's "Last Night" may also be at hand with Toronto giving a plum Roy Thomson Hall slot to the Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes-starring romancer from director Massy Tadjedjin.
Knightley and Sam Worthington play a married couple spending a night apart as the husband takes a business trip with a colleague, played by Mendes, to whom he's attracted. Meanwhile, while he resists temptation, his wife encounters a past lover, played by Guillaume Canet.
Fox Searchlight Pictures' "127 Hours," from director Danny Boyle and starring James Franco, is also Toronto-bound in the Special Presentations sidebar.

I love getting IndieWire’s Cannes Wish List. IndieWire's commentary on each film is interesting in and of itself. I find myself remarking "I didn't know that!" at every other entry. My former Tipped for Cannes Report (when FilmFinders was my company) was one of my most popular reports because film buyers and programmers could immediately hone in on their targets. So, in keeping with tradition, I pulled together the list Screen International (Si) and blogger ion (he did a lot of research for this!) published in February just after the Berlinale and am now going to compare it with Iw’s. My links for the title are to IMDbPro and for the contact either to the seller (Isa=International Sales Agent) or the producer.
After this, I will track which of these land in Cannes, which in Toronto, Venice, etc.; which get acquired by whom (to be gathered together...
