When Blue Lights debuted on BBC One last year, it was favourably compared with Line of Duty. The comparison made sense. Both dramas deal with drug-dealing organised crime gangs, and touch on the under-funded reality of PR and stats-led UK policing. Both love an armed response unit and a cliffhanger. They’re both filmed in Belfast (though only Blue Lights is set there) and take place in fictional police sections where the dialogue gets a bit ‘sit rep on the double o-b’ spilled-Scrabble-tiles at times.
There is though, a major difference between the two – and it’s not just Blue Lights being about frontline response policing (uniforms in patrol cars) and Line of Duty being about anti-corruption detectives (suits in undercover vehicles). It’s to do with warmth.
To listen to commissioners, warmth is what audiences are currently craving. It’s what put Richard Osman on the bestseller lists for his Thursday Murder Club books,...

Fans won’t be instantly smitten with Unforgotten’s new detective chief inspector, and that’s fine with Chris Lang, the creator and writer of the engrossing British cold-case drama, returning for Season 5 on Sunday, September 3, on PBS. He anticipated it would take time for viewers to warm up to Jessica James (Sinéad Keenan), who replaces Nicola Walker’s Cassie Stuart in the Masterpiece series’ fifth season following the beloved character’s death. Lang’s solution: to have her still-grieving colleagues, led by Detective Inspector Sunny Khan, also struggle to forge a connection with their boss, even though nine months have passed since Cassie died. “I knew the audience would come to it feeling a huge sense of loss and probably some resentment,” Lang says. “So I wanted to dive straight in to a man who’s still wrestling with grief and loss, which is impacting his professional life and...

Susanna Reid has defended her decision to pay for a blue tick on Twitter.
Last week, CEO Elon Musk made good of his promise to strip “legacy” verification status from every user who had not paid for a Twitter Blue subscription.
In their first tweets without a blue tick, many celebrities said they were happy to be free of it as they believe it would be “embarrassing” to pay $8 (£6.44) a month for it.
It was reported that a mere 28 “legacy” verified users signed up for Twitter Blue hours after Elon Musk took away their verified status.
One celebrity who decided to subscribe in order to retain their blue tick was Good Morning Britain presenter Reid, who defended her decision in response to a news story shared online.
Re-sharing a story headlined “Piers Morgan Loses Twitter tick as Susanna Reid and Holly Willoughby pay to keep theirs”, the Gmb host wrote:...

It’s also a year of dramatic goodbyes: Happy Valley returned for its third and final series on New Year’s Day, Endeavour will wrap up after over a decade of detective work, and 2023 might also squeeze in the sixth and final season of The Crown.

The series returned for a fifth run last week for its first series without former star Nicola Walker.
Sanjeev Bhaskar returns as Di Sunny Khan in the episodes alongside new cast addition Sinead Keenan, who plays Dci Jess James.
Unlike other British dramas, including BBC series Happy Valley, the entirety of the new series has been made available to view on its channel’s dedicated viewing platform.
However, while Lang isn’t exactly requesting people to swerve watching all episodes at once, he has stepped in to ask that these viewers keep the show’s surprises a secret from those who want to wait.
“Thx so much for all your lovely comments about #Unforgotten !” he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday (1 March).

Warning: contains major spoilers for Unforgotten Series 4.
Two years on, we’re still not over Nicola Walker’s shock departure from Unforgotten.
When Walker’s character Dci Cassie Stuart – the ITV crime drama’s much-loved lead detective – was involved in a car crash in the penultimate episode of Series Four in 2021, she was expected to miraculously pull through… and then didn’t. The brain injuries Cassie sustained in the side-on smash with a speeding car thief were too severe for her to recover from.
Fans watched in shock as Cassie’s family received the news in hospital, and colleague Di Sunny Khan ended the series by placing flowers on her grave, accompanied by a touching monologue. “She longest lives, who most to others gives, herself forgetting” read the inscription on the headstone.
Khan wasn’t the only one in mourning, Unforgotten’s fans also grieved the shock loss of the character.

“You’d be surprised,” says Peter Anderson, creative director of the studio behind the title sequences for hit ITV crime drama Unforgotten. “You can show something really on-the-nose, and people won’t get it until they’ve been told. We fret and worry about giving too much away but the clue is only triggered when you know the context.”
Each 40-second title sequence for Unforgotten is a curated collection of purpose-filmed scenes designed to go where the drama can’t – namely, inside the characters’ heads. Every series starts with the discovery of a long-buried body, then introduces viewers to a guest cast of characters whose connections to each other, and to the historical murder, gradually unfold. It takes six episodes to solve the mystery, but right from the start, the abstracted and symbolic images created for the title sequence already hold all the answers.

Created by Chris Lang, ITV’s Unforgotten pairs Nicola Walker’s Dci Cassie Stuart with Sanjeev Bhaskar’s Di Sunil Khan. Along with their team, those two investigate decades-old murder cases, piecing together events that transpired many years ago to deliver justice and closure to the victim and their relatives.
Series one saw the duo called to investigate the remains of a man long-buried under the foundations of a London home, while series two began with the discovery of a skeleton dredged up from the River Lea. Series three was the distressing story of a missing teenager whose body was discovered under the central reservation of a motorway.
Series four, which starts with the discovery of a body stored for decades in a domestic freezer, will star New Tricks’ Sheila Hancock, Killing Eve’s Susan Lynch, Wanderlust’s Andy Nyman and more. See below for the full cast and plot details.

British crime series from Inspector Morse to Midsomer Murders have long dominated linear television schedules in the UK and show no sign of slowing down. The man responsible for many of the latest gruesome hits is Chris Lang, creator of ITV’s Unforgotten and Innocent.
Lang tells Deadline why this new generation of police dramas is resonating with audiences and why he is interrupting this murder spree to focus on a number of more lighthearted, romantic comedy projects.
Unforgotten is currently in its third season and the Mainstreet Pictures-produced series is averaging 6M viewers a night, despite fierce competition from Aidan Turner’s sythe-wielding drama Poldark. The show follows two London detectives, played by The Split’s Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar (Goodness Gracious Me) as they work together to solve cold case murders and disappearances. ITV has commissioned new drama The Forgotten.
The six-part series from Mainstreet Pictures will centre on a 39-year-old cold case that's reopened following the discovery of a skeleton buried underneath a cellar.
An extensive investigation is led by Dci Cassie Stuart and Di Sunil 'Sunny' Khan that spans the country and delves back in time to find the killer.
Chris Lang (Undeniable, A Mother's Son) writes the series and Tim Bradley (Teachers, Primeval) produces.
ITV's Director of Drama Steve November said: "The Forgotten will look at how an historic police investigation affects the lives of all those touched by it.
"Lang's scripts are wonderfully compelling as the mystery deepens and the police hunt for the killer intensifies."
BBC Worldwide has claimed the global distribution rights for the series.
The Forgotten will begin filming in March 2015, with casting due to take place later in the year.

As part of ITV’s co-financing deal with BBC America, Germany’s Pro Sieben and UKTV, that allowed the return of their axed sci-fi drama Primeval, it’s UKTV’s digital channel Watch who receive the British premiere of series 5. This results in mixed fortunes: loyal fans get new episodes mere months after series 4 ended on ITV, but it’s no longer accessible to everyone and isn’t being simulcast in HD. It also strikes me as odd that Watch have moved Primeval from its customary Saturday timeslot, as I suspect they could have lured a sizeable post-Doctor Who audience their way…
