"This acting, this was always your dream?" Roadside Attractions has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Accidental Texan, made by storyboard artist / filmmaker Mark Lambert Bristol. Obviously enough, this originally premiered at the 2023 Dallas Film Festival last year, with a stop at the Heartland Film Festival in Indiana as well. The film is adapted from a novel called "Chocolate Lizards", which was the original title for this before they changed it to Accidental Texan. Fresh-faced actor Erwin finds himself stranded in Texas after a film shoot gone wrong, where he's taken under the wing of a nearly bankrupt oil driller. They set off on a wild Texas adventure to outwit a corrupt oil company to hit pay dirt before Merle's dreams are foreclosed, partnering with a kind waitress along the way. The ensemble cast features Rudy Pankow as Erwin, Carrie-Anne Moss as Faye, Thomas Haden Church as Merle,...

Shane Atkinson’s debut sets itself in the ever-so-small town of Laroy. Ray (John Magaro) is a man living the simple life, married to the local beauty-pageant queen and working at his family’s hardware store alongside his brother, Junior (Matthew Del Negro). He’s not unhappy, but not quite happy either. His existence depends on raising enough money for his wife Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson) to open a salon. Her happiness results in his own happiness. Unfortunately, she’s not happy––at least not with Ray.
An unabashed quasi-homage to the Coen brothers, Laroy concerns a case of mistaken identity. Ray happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and so when he’s assumed to be a hitman he obliges. As the confusion and dead bodies begin stacking up, Ray and his friend-turned-private eye Skip (Steve Zahn) must solve the plethora of crimes that lay in their wake.

When Ray Jepsen (John Magaro) pulls into a strip club parking to blow his brains out, his plans for the rest of the week are the furthest thing from his mind. But that’s one of the many, many downsides of suicide that nobody talks about — you create scheduling nightmares for everyone else in your life. And it’s particularly inconvenient when a local sleazebag erroneously believes that he hired you to carry out a murder that must be done tomorrow.
But that’s just life in Laroy, Texas. Shane Atkinson’s feature directorial debut takes place in a fictional town where residents only have three interests: extramarital affairs, blackmailing each other about extramarital affairs, and child beauty pageants. When an obstacle hinders someone’s ability to enjoy those treasured pastimes, murder is the most popular solution.
While suicide is never the answer, it’s easy to understand why Ray is so bummed.

"I hope you made peace with God..." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for a new indie western titled Hostile Territory, joining the ranks of a growing set of westerns being made recently. Most of them are indies and most of them are forgettable, but they're making more and more these days. Set in post-civil war America, when a Union soldier is presumed dead, his children are mistakenly sent away on "the orphan train." This is a classic wild-west story of people uniting for the greater good, and children forced to grow up quickly. A former Pow teams up with a troop of Native American sharpshooters and a freed slave as they try to stop the train. Brian Presley writes & directs & stars in this film. He's joined by Matt McCoy, Brea Bee, Brad Leland, Lew Temple, Cooper North, and Craig Tate. This actually looks like it might be somewhat entertaining,...

HBO's "The Last of Us" series adapts the acclaimed post-apocalyptic video games developed by Naughty Dog, with the games' creative director, Neil Druckmann, serving as co-showrunner alongside writer-producer Craig Mazin ("Chernobyl"). Yet, as visually faithful as the show is shaping up to be, it's also clear this won't be a beat-for-beat re-telling in terms of story. Season 1 alone will feature such original additions as Perry, a rebel played by Tommy's voice actor from the games, Jeffrey Pierce. Natasha Mumba ("Y: The Last Man") and Brad Leland ("Friday Night Lights") are similarly playing characters who were likely created for the series to aid...

Let’s put it out there that the acting when it came to bringing Buddy Garrity to life wasn’t bad at all, and his character arc was usually pretty confusing as well as frustrating since every time it would appear that he was about to be redeemed, he said or did something stupid and went crashing back down to be reviled again. Brad Leland did a great job with the character since he was one of the most reviled individuals on the show, especially since Buddy only ever appeared to be on one person’s side, and that was his own. "Do you ever get lonely out here?" "I know I'd be more lonely there than here. Focus Features has debuted the first trailer for Land, the feature directorial debut of Golden Globe-winning actress Robin Wright. This is officially set to premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival in January, then open in theaters just a few weeks later in February (unless it's delayed because the pandemic is still keeping cinemas shut down). The film also stars Robin Wright as Edee Mathis who decides, in the aftermath of an unfathomable event, packing up and leaving everything behind. She moves into the wilds of the Rockies in Wyoming, living off-the-grid in a remote cabin. The film is described as "the poignant story of one woman's search... for meaning in the vast and harsh American wilderness." Land also co-stars Demián Bichir, Kim Dickens, and Brad Leland. Friday Night Lights cast members Adrianne Palicki (Tyra Collette), Taylor Kitsch (Tim Riggins), Derek Phillips (Billy Riggins) and Stacey Oristano (Mindy Collette/Mindy Riggins) reunited virtually Friday for an Atx Television Festival panel to kick off the event’s remote 2020 edition.
The four reminisced about some of their most memorable moments during the series. Palicki and Oristano noted one of their favorite places to shoot was the Collette house. “That’s the place where Derek ate crawfish and kissed me and I had an allergic reaction..- he got it all over his beard and then he kissed me and my face was like…” Oristano said.
They also imagined what their characters would have been doing during a Covid quarantine. “I think they would all be together,” said Kitsch. “We would murder each other!,” Oristano exclaimed.
“Obviously Tyra and Tim are married with five children, probably divorced like twice,” said Palicki.

Based on the same real-life story that inspired the 1995 animated feature “Balto” and Disney’s forthcoming “Togo”, “The Great Alaskan Race” promises at the very least to be a satisfying movie for dog lovers. What else could one expect, as its poster consists of a husky’s face in giant closeup? Unfortunately, it turns out that very least is still too much to ask for from this handsome but hokey drama, which barely seems to notice its canine players amid a focus on one-dimensional humans.
Chief among them is writer-director-producer-star Brian Presley (best known for TV soap “Port Charles”), playing the man who successfully delivered serum to Nome with his dog team during a 1925 diphtheria epidemic — a near-miraculous run still commemorated annually by the Iditarod Trail competition. That triumph over extremely adverse conditions should make for an exciting physical adventure.

"You are choosing to transport this serum with a stone age solution!" "Have a little faith, will you?" P12 Films has debuted the first official trailer for a family adventure movie titled The Great Alaskan Race, made by writer / director Brian Presley. The movie is a recreation and retelling of the true story of the great serum run of Alaska in 1925. This original "race" across Alaska later became the iconic Iditarod trail sled dog race, still held every year. The legendary serum run originally occurred in the winter of 1924 to 1925 - Leonhard Seppala and his team of sled dogs traveled over 700 treacherous miles to save the small town of Nome from a deadly diphtheria outbreak. The Great Alaskan Race stars Brian Presley, Brad Leland, Treat Williams, Henry Thomas, Brea Bree, and Bruce Davison. Along with a bunch of cuddly dogs. The dialogue in this trailer is atrocious, but at least...

Perfectly cast as the most overbearingly demanding Texas high school football coach to appear on screen since Jon Voight made life miserable for James Van Der Beek in “Varsity Blues,” Brad Leland is the most valuable player in “The Last Whistle,” a modestly engaging indie drama that attempts, with mixed results, to traverse the middle ground between blunt-force criticism of win-at-all-costs philosophy and sentimental celebration of influential father figures.
Leland, arguably best known for his role as a small-town football booster in the TV series “Friday Night Lights,” is fearlessly, even aggressively unsympathetic during much of his screen time here as Victor Trenton, a Fort Worth area high school football coach who’s introduced as a skilled tactician whose winning ways may lead to his being hired by a prestigious university — but only if his team continues to, well, win.

Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don’t know beforehand what roles we’ll ask them to talk about.
The actor: By his own admission, Brad Leland continues “to play bad guys, rednecks, and cowboys, and all those sidekick-type characters.” But of all the shit kickers the actor has played, none endures like Buddy Garrity, who begins the TV version of Friday Night Lights as a pushy, nosy high school football booster and ends the series as one of the most sympathetic figures in the fictional West Texas town of Dillon. The drama celebrated its 10th anniversary at this year’s Atx Television Festival, where The A.V. Club spoke with Leland about Buddy’s redemptive arc, the time-killing habit he shares with Paul Rudd, and the surprising audition he gave for Thomas Haden Church.

Club spoke with Leland about Buddy’s redemptive arc, the time-killing habit he shares with Paul Rudd, and the surprising audition he gave for Thomas Haden Church.

Netflix can always be relied upon to provide audiences with unexpected gems but, as the streaming service continues to make progress in the production of new material, we not only get to hear about those gems in advance, but we get to anticipate their arrival and consume it immediately upon release. Such is the case with Little Evil – a new comedy coming from writer-director Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale Vs Evil) that is now set to star Evangeline Lilly and Adam Scott.
The premise has great comedic potential, while leaving room for Craig’s trademark scary edge. Gary (Adam Scott) marries Samantha (Evangeline Lilly) and in doing so, gains a six year old stepson (played by Owen Atlas). The honeymoon period is somewhat disrupted, however, because the child is revealed to be the Anti-Christ.

Winning for Best Drama was “Farr,” a crime drama set in Northern Ireland (which also won the same prize at last fall’s ITVFest). Per the drama jury’s statement, “The pilot we would like to recognize is ‘Farr’ since we were invested in the characters and storyline. We can’t wait to see how it unfolds!”
Best Comedy was awarded to “Truth Slash Fiction,” which revolved around a teenage girl’s discovery of erotic fan fiction. According to the jury’s statement, “We decided to recognize work that exists as a true pilot – establishing a mood, conflicts, characters, relationships and an ongoing story that would make a compelling series. Four episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
A transition of showrunners is always a tricky move for any TV show to pull off, much less one as full throttle and unrelentingly scathing as HBO’s Veep. When the show’s creator, Armando Iannucci, announced last year that he would be handing off the reigns to Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm alum David Mandel, it was easy to be the tiniest bit cautious. Among many great feats, Veep‘s ability to walk the tightrope of a “heightened” Washington, D.C. – and be consistently hilarious – was something almost too precious to sour.
And soured it is certainly n0t – Veep is, as ever, a head-spinning political satire with enough cracks made by its delightfully potty-mouthed cast of White House scallywags as to feel increasingly less fantastical, and more intriguingly realistic, the longer it goes on. That may be truer than ever in the show’s fifth year,...

A review of the "Veep" season finale coming up just as soon as I have incompatible shoes for this carpet... Earlier this season, I wondered if the show might find some way for the election to end with Selina as someone else's vice-president, allowing the show to revert to its original set-up. A part of me was amused by the thought of the contortions necessary to get us to that point, while another was dismayed at the idea that the show might have to hit the reset button so hard, given how much fun Selina-as-potus has been. We'll see if season 5 actually goes through with this tiebreaker mess, where Tom James becomes president, and Selina perhaps becomes his veep. But if the level of execution remains as good as it was throughout "Election Night," and this whole great season, then I don't know how much I care exactly what job...

Justified, Season 6, Episode 5: “Sounding”
Written by Dave Andron and Leonard Chang
Directed by John Avnet
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on FX
There’s a crackerjack sequence most of the way through “Sounding” wherein Boyd Crowder, his associates, and an old frenemy by the name of Zachariah Randolph (Jeff Fahey) start the process of finding an alternate route through to the Pizza Portal vault. The process reveals fissures – significant ones – but also a seriously combustive kick. At the risk of drawing a clumsy parallel, the (brilliantly directed) sequence is a fine metaphor for the episode itself, which finds the season at its entertaining and fast-paced yet, while simultaneously exposing a few of the season’s nagging issues – and potentially creating a significant new one.
Despite the gripes – still to come – there is a lot to like about “Sounding,” which in ways both subtle and not-so-subtle brings together the entire...

A review of tonight's "Justified" coming up just as soon as we decide whether we're going to flapjack or short bus the bad guys... "You see, Raylan, I've learned to think without arguing with myself." -Boyd Like the Elmore Leonard stories that inspired the series, "Justified" has a tendency to have very complicated plots, with each season featuring multiple groups of villains pursuing different agendas that frequently intersect and cause headaches for each other and Raylan Givens. The trick is to make the villains entertaining enough that we don't mind doing the mental calculations about who's after what, or waiting through the cryptic early episodes until we find out everyone's angle. When the bad guys are, for instance, Quarles and Limehouse, then it's no big deal trying to untangle that season's Gordian plot; when it's Daryl Crowe, then you start to notice how contorted things are getting. Last week's season...

Justified, Season 6, Episode 2: “Cash Game”
Written by Dave Andron and VJ Boyd
Directed by Dean Parisot
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm Et on FX
Truth be told: not a hell of a lot happens in “Cash Game.” Despite the fact that it only has eleven more episodes to go after this one, Justified is still Justified, and this has never been a series that’s felt the need to hurry up its seasons’ first acts. Instead, it uses its time to sell us on this season’s cast of rogues, as well as indulging in a pleasant number of comic asides, reminding us that, at its core, Justified is a fun series, though that has been difficult to remember throughout some of its recent, darker patches.

The opening hour of Justified’s last rodeo ended on a note that felt very much like a mission statement for what to expect out of the final season. It wasn’t just enough to have Dewey, Harlan’s county jester, meet his maker in grisly fashion, but to have it be at the hands of Boyd, a character who, despite all his past transgressions, is still someone we can’t help but root for. While your mileage may vary as to what fate you think Boyd deserves, taking Dewey out of the equation could have marked a major tonal shift for the series. Every village needs an idiot, after all, so with Dewey gone, there came a question of how many of its final hours Justified wanted to devote to yucking things up.

The writing of the late, great Elmore Leonard that inspired "Justified" — which begins its sixth and final season tonight at 10 on FX — could be incredibly self-aware at times. Characters in Leonard stories tend to be big fans of popular culture, and they know exactly which archetypes to compare themselves to, which roles they are playing (or think they're playing) in their particular story, and even like to predict how the story is will conclude. That level of meta commentary has waxed and waned over the previous five seasons of "Justified," but it's at top volume early in the new year (I've seen the first three episodes). Raylan (Timothy Olyphant), Boyd (Walton Goggins) and Ava (Joelle Carter) all know the story they've been tangled up in these last few years is about to finish up, and the only question is how. There's much talk of the way Harlan County itself has begun its death rattle,...

Friday Night Lights is one of the greatest shows of recent time.
