Just once, it would be refreshing to see a serial killer movie in which the detectives investigating a series of horrific murders were actually normal, well-adjusted individuals. The kind of cops who leave their work at the office, go home to their families, and drink only the occasional beer or glass of wine at dinner. The ones, in other words, who don’t live up to the title of the new thriller featuring a top-billed Samuel L. Jackson but in which the real leading player is Gianni Capaldi, who also co-scripted.
That’s definitely not the case with Damaged, a routine cop movie mainly distinguished by its extensive Scottish locations. Jackson plays Dan Lawson, a Chicago detective still haunted by a bunch of killings years earlier in which one of the victims was his own girlfriend. When a similar series of murders — in which the victims’ bodies are dismembered and...

Plot: Dan Lawson, a Chicago detective, travels to Scotland to link up with Scottish Det. Boyd, following the resurgence of a serial killer whose crimes match an unsolved case that he looked into 5 years previous in Chicago.
Review: Ever since David Fincher’s Se7en, I’ve been a fan of the simple premise of a detective hunting down a serial killer. This game of cat and mouse allows for just the right amount of mystery and intrigue that will keep you guessing until the end. I’d argue the big reveal at the end is nearly as synonymous with crime thrillers as cops and criminals. If there’s one thing a good mystery needs, it’s something unexpected. And Damaged certainly has that.
The story follows Detective Lawson (Samuel L. Jackson) as he travels to Scotland to help with a case. Someone is recreating the murders that Lawson investigated back in Chicago five years prior,...

Five years ago, a serial killer terrorized Chicago. Detective Dan Lawson was assigned to the case but couldn’t bring the killer to justice. It left him a badly damaged man, drinking on the job and obsessed with revenge. Doubly so because one of the victims was his own girlfriend whom he discovered, her head and limbs in the shape of a cross, her torso missing.
In Edinburgh, Detective Glen Boyd finds himself investigating a murder that looks to be the work of the same person. He reaches out to the Chicago Pd, who are only too happy to put Lawson on the next flight to Scotland. Fortunately, there weren’t any motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane.
Things, of course, don’t go well.

A documentary about Harry Belafonte’s “Tonight Show” stint and another executive produced by NFL player Malcolm Jenkins will be among the movies that will debut on Peacock as part of NBCUniversal’s original film slate in September.
The original films “Anthony,” “The Sit-In: Harry Belafonte Hosts The Tonight Show” and “Black Boys” will premiere early next month. Further, the documentary “A Most Beautiful Thing” and Emilio Esteveez’s “The Public” will stream exclusively on the service in September.
“The Sit-In,” which premieres Sept. 10, looks at the events surrounding the week in which Belafonte guest hosted “The Tonight Show” in place of Johnny Carson for a full week in February 1968, the first time a Black man ever got the opportunity. Belafonte’s guests that week included Aretha Franklin, Sidney Poitier, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy, and the documentary includes behind-the-scenes footage of how the politics of the day shaped the show.

“Anthony,” a commissioned 90-minute drama about Anthony Walker, a Black teenager who was murdered in a racist attack in Liverpool in 2005, will air on BBC One.
Inspired by conversations with Anthony’s mother Gee Walker, “Anthony” is written by Jimmy McGovern, BAFTA-winner for “The Street” and “Hillsborough.” The drama looks at what Anthony’s life could have been had he lived, before dealing with his death.
Gee Walker said: “I went to Jimmy because I couldn’t think of anyone more suited who could depict, highlight and draw attention to the hard messages of a life not lived – Anthony’s unfilled dreams, his potentials and the many lives he would have impacted on – which now will never be realized.”

Syfy's "most ambitious series to date", The Expanse, is well worth a look. Here's our episode one review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 Dulcinea
Based on the series of novels by James S. A. Corey, the SyFy channel’s new “space opera”, The Expanse begins with a tense, slow-burning affair, culminating in a sizeable pay-off that lays the groundwork for a promising new science-fiction adaptation.
Series developers Mark Fergus and (the wonderfully named) Hawk Ostby resist the temptation many new shows succumb to: jumping out of the blocks with all guns blazing, hoping to entice viewers with a packed forty minutes of explosions, only for subsequent episodes to inevitably fail to live up to that opening salvo. Instead, The Expanse allows its audience to spend time with each primary character and location and get a feel of where this show is headed. The pacing is measured, rather than slow,...

Implying both scope and sprawl, the title of Syfy's new drama The Expanse also captures both the highs and lows of the series, which has unquestionably expansive aspirations, but fails to emerge from a far-flung muddle over its first four episodes. Syfy already has put the first episode of The Expanse online, weeks ahead of a two-night premiere on Dec. 14 and 15. Though both episodes are adapted by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby and are directed by Terry McDonough, it happens that the first episode is much better than the second, which sets in motion the meandering

Here’s an unexpected one. ITV is bringing back its BAFTA-winning Cold Feet. New episodes will go into production in January 2016.
Series creator Mike Bullen has conceived the new episodes, and will write and executive produce for the new series. Stars James Nesbitt, Robert Bathurst, Hermione Norris, John Thomson, and Fay Ripley are all reuniting on the screen.
Here’s a synopsis, from the official press bumf:
“It’s been 13 years since Rachel’s untimely death. How has Adam coped without his soulmate, raising their son on his own? Do Pete and Jenny still spend their evenings on the sofa, except now they watch Endeavour instead of Morse? And what of David and Karen? Better Call Saul, Season 1, Episode 3: “Nacho”
Written by Thomas Schnauz
Directed by Terry McDonough
Airs Mondays at 10Pm (Et) on AMC
Better Call Saul‘s latest makes for a stressful hour, right from the get-go.
The episode opens with another time-jump, as we’re given our first glimpse of this “Slippin’ Jimmy” we’ve been hearing so much about. Saul/Jimmy appears in prisoner garb as he implores his older brother to pull him out of his mess. A couple of nuanced referential moments occur, one in a shot that is a direct reiteration of the scene in the pilot where Saul empties his pockets to visit a distressed and mentally ill Chuck. The other callback occurs when Chuck simply stands up and calls for the guard in the middle of Saul’s manipulative diatribe, showing, quite clearly, that he can see through his brother’s shtick.

Better Call Saul‘s latest makes for a stressful hour, right from the get-go.
The episode opens with another time-jump, as we’re given our first glimpse of this “Slippin’ Jimmy” we’ve been hearing so much about. A review of tonight's "Better Call Saul" coming up just as soon as I do the sex robot voice... "I'm no hero." -Jimmy I really enjoyed the first two hours of "Saul," but "Nacho" is the first installment to suggest an actual structure for the new show. We get a story to keep Jimmy occupied for the whole episode, which is resolved on one level even as it's setting things up for future stories with Jimmy getting a look at all the cash the Kettlemans stole. And it's a whole lot of fun from beginning to end. Though Jimmy protests his good guy bonafides, it's worth noting that most of the trouble he gets into here — and, for that matter, that he nearly got himself into with Tuco last week — came from him exercising a conscience that will mostly lie dormant by the time he's Saul Goodman. In alerting the...

Early in the second episode of AMC's "Breaking Bad" prequel "Better Call Saul!," our hero Jimmy McGill — who will one day go by Saul Goodman — is taken out into the desert and threatened by someone who in the future will tangle with the man called Heisenberg. "Saul" creators Vince Gilligan (the man responsible for "Breaking Bad" in the first place) and Peter Gould (who wrote the episode that introduced Saul Goodman) have been very candid about how long it took them to figure out exactly what this new show would be. Sequel or prequel? Comedy or drama? Half-hour or hour? Everything seemed a possibility, and watching Saul cower in the New Mexico sun before a familiar "Breaking Bad" villain, I wondered if Gilligan and Gould had simply taken the path of least resistance and decided to wedge actor Bob Odenkirk into a kind of "Young Walter White Chronicles," simply giving...

It's Syfy's most expensive series ever—and the best hope for sci-fi fans looking for the next great space opera. The Expanse is based on James S.A. Corey's bestseller Leviathan Wakes, which is aiming to be the next Star Trek/Firefly/Farscape-style adventure series. The Expanse is a thriller set 200 years in the future, after mankind has colonized the solar system. The logline: "A hardened detective (Thomas Jane) and a rogue ship’s captain (Steven Strait) come together for what starts as the case of a missing young woman and evolves into a race across the solar system to...

Halt and Catch Fire, Season 1, Episode 9: “Up Helly Aa”
Directed by Terry McDonough
Written by Jason Cahill
Airs Sundays at 10pm Est on AMC
The entire season of Halt and Catch Fire has existed in a sort of parallel universe 1983. The fictional Cardiff Electric crosses paths with real companies like Ibm and Texas Instruments. Various characters mention Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, but the show hasn’t been too clear about how close it is adhering to the historical timeline of the development of the PC. The final scene of “Up Helly Aa” makes it clear that they are living in the real world, where the introduction of the Apple Macintosh is soon to blow up the emerging PC market and relegate all competitors to also-rans, at least until Microsoft Windows eclipses it in the early 1990s.

Until about 10 minutes ago, there has been so much conflicting information, if not outright misinformation, about what exactly "Better Call Saul" will be: A straight "Breaking Bad" prequel? A time-bending journey that includes adventures during the reign of Heisenberg? A comedy? A drama with occasional laughs? Huell's story? AMC's press release about the full cast and basic premise and setting fill in some of the details — including that it begins six years before Saul (then known as Jimmy McGill) meets Walter White — and now co-creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould will hopefully bring more of the show (not due to premiere until early 2015) into sharper clarity, without actually giving too much of the fun away. I'll be live-blogging all of Gilligan's charming Virginian self-deprecation, all of Gould's jokes, and whatever nuggets we actually get about the new show. The producers of Better Call Saul are answering some questions about the hotly anticipated Breaking Bad spin-off prequel, and AMC is releasing some new photos. Writer-producers Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould took questions from reporters at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills on Friday. Here’s what we learned:
1. The series regulars and their confirmed character names joining star Bob Odenkirk: Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad) as “fixer” Mike Erhmantraut, Michael McKean (This is Spinal Tap) as Chuck, Rhea Seehorn (Franklin & Bash) as Kim, Patrick Fabian (Grey’s Anatomy) as Hamlin and Michael Mando (Orphan Black) as Nacho.

The Red Road, Season 1, Episode 6, “The Journey to the Sunrise”
Written by Aaron Guzikowski
Directed by Terry McDonough
Aired Thursdays at 9pm Est on SundanceTV
This week, on The Red Road: Harold comes clean, Phillip collects art, and Jean goes for a swim
The Red Road has had an uneven season. It’s struggled to make the most of its unique setting and promising characters, but it’s given leads Julianne Nicholson and Jason Momoa some of the most interesting material of their careers. It’s taken surprising turns in its small character moments while sticking to the familiar with its plot points. After this week’s season finale, it seems unclear what kind of show The Red Road wants to be, and this lack of focus robs the season of narrative urgency and emotional depth.
As has been the case all season, the character beats in “The Journey to the Sunrise” work well.

An Adventure in Space and Time goes back to the beginning of British cult TV hit Doctor Who.
From award-winning writer Mark Gatiss (TV’s Sherlock) and director Terry McDonough (TV’s Clue), the biogaphy movie takes us back to Nov. 23, 1963, when the first episode of Doctor Who was broadcast on BBC One.
About an alien Time Lord exploring space and time in a spaceship the shape of a police box and called the Tardis (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), the show brought together actor William Hartnell (David Bradley, Harry Potter movies), who had felt typecast by a run of tough-guy roles and wannabe producer Verity Lambert (Jessica Raine, TV’s Call the Midwife), who was frustrated by the TV industry’s glass ceiling for women.

An Adventure in Space and Time
Written by Mark Gatiss
Directed by Terry McDonough
Aired November 22nd on BBC America
As a love letter to the creation of Doctor Who, Mark Gatiss’ An Adventure in Space and Time gets a lot right. It’s faithful, it features excellent performances, and it is appropriately wistful about a series that has become an institution. Unfortunately, by adhering so closely to this notion of fond remembrances, the film limits its potential, becoming little more than a curiosity for interested Whovians. Doctor Who, which just celebrated the 50th anniversary of its debut, is a television phenomenon, arguably more popular now than when it burst onto the scene in 1963 with its incredibly popular second story, The Daleks. Given Who’s less-than-smooth journey from concept to broadcast and the many colorful people involved with its creation, a TV movie exploring the series’ beginnings makes narrative and commercial sense,...

Rule One: The Moffat Lies.
Rule One-a: So Does The McGann.
After nearly a year of what showrunner Steven Moffat described as “lying through my teeth”, the prequel to the Doctor Who anniversary episode “The Day of the Doctor” reveals that the one fact that upset people the most is the one that was the biggest lie.
Watch, and squee with me.
Ok, so technically, Paul McGann isn’t in the Anniversary episode proper, so his year-long claim that he wasn’t asked to take part wasn’t quite a lie, but it’s close enough.
And it was released on his birthday, which is just a case of the universe rolling the right way on occasion.
The Sisterhood of Karn made their first appearance in the Tom Baker adventure The Brain of Morbius. The Sisterhood have had a long history with the Time Lords, as described in numerous prose and audio adventures.

Timed just ahead of the show's 50th anniversary, the origins of how "Doctor Who" came to be are explored in the 90-minute narrative drama "An Adventure in Space and Time" which has just locked down air dates.
In the U.K., the telemovie will screen on BBC2 on Thursday, November 21st at 9pm. It will then screen a day later in the U.S., airing on BBC America on Friday, November 22nd at 9pm.
The story revolves around three people: William Hartnell, a veteran actor coming to the end of a frustrating career; Verity Lambert, a former production assistant fighting to make her mark in television; and Waris Hussein, an India-born novice director.
Together they created a genre series that all ages would love. David Bradley, Jessica Raine, Sacha Dhawan and Brian Cox star in the project which will cover the show's genesis and will go all the way through to the first regeneration.

'Doctor Who' movie: 'An Adventure in Space and Time' star David Bradley and director Terry McDonough
At the summer TCA press tour's second cable day, BBC America presented "An Adventure in Space and Time," an upcoming film on the origins of "Doctor Who." Star David Bradley (playing William Hartnell) and director Terry McDonough shared some highlights on the early days of the iconic series.
Set in the early '60s at the BBC, the first production of "Doctor Who" was more than a small struggle. The show didn't match the network's programming at the time, it was produced by a woman and it was directed by the BBC's first Indian director.
Also, the star was not in the greatest shape by the time they were filming.
The movie focuses on the behind-the-scenes aspects of the production. As a result, viewers will see the politics of the production, shot-for-shot reproductions of the early episodes and even odd bits of trivia -- like the voice of the original...

Reece Shearsmith is to play Patrick Troughton in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary biopic.
