Melbourne, Jan 22 (Ians) World No.1 Iga Swiatek’s hopes of a second straight hard-court major are over following a crushing defeat to Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the Australian Open fourth round.
Round of 16 showdowns did not come any bigger than two reigning Grand Slam champions at this stage, reports AusOpen.
After the Pole’s benchmark-setting feats of 2022, the 23-year-old Rybakina served a reminder she is in the box seat to further shake up the top order this season with her 6-4 6-4 triumph.
The two women shared the major spoils since Australian Open champion Ash Barty’s retirement last year and on Sunday, they met for just the second time, following Swiatek’s straight-sets victory indoors in Ostrava in 2021.
Neither placed too much weight on that previous encounter, given the heights both have scaled since.

Melbourne, Jan 20 (Ians) The No.3 seed American Jessica Pegula on Friday reached the fourth round of the Australian Open for the third straight year. Her fellow American Coco Gauff and world No.1 Iga Swiatek of Poland followed her with a win in their respective third-round matches.
Pegula outplayed Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-0, 6-2 in the third round. In three matches so far, the No.3 seed has lost just 11 games in six sets.
The 65-minute third-round contest at the Margaret Court Arena was a tighter match than the scoreline suggested. Four of the six games in the first set all extended to multiple deuces, and Pegula saved five break points in the game she eventually held to lead 4-0.
The second set was more of the same. Pegula raced out to a 4-1 lead before Kostyuk got a break back. The Ukrainian later missed a forehand volley on game point...

New York, Aug 26 (Ians) In what is set to be her final tournament, 23-time major champion Serena Williams will face Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in the first round of the U.S Open, the organisers announced on Thursday.
Earlier this month, Williams announced her impending retirement after the U.S Open. A champion in New York six times, she will face No.80 Kovinic for the first time.
The 27-year-old Montenegrin reached a career-high ranking of No.46 in 2016 and became the first woman from her country to win a Wta Tour title last year at Charleston.

The winner of that opener will face either No.2 Anett Kontaveit or Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian.

Celebrity Big Brother winner Charlotte Crosby missed the wrap party last night.
The Geordie Shore star, who was crowned champion in Friday's final, was nowhere to be seen as the cast and crew celebrated the end of the series at Gilgamesh in London.
Housemates including Lauren Harries, Mario Falcone, Louie Spence, Sophie Anderton and Bruce Jones did make it to the event.
Crosby later hinted on Twitter that her evening hadn't gone to plan, writing:
This has been possibly one of the worst nights Ever!
— Charlotte-Letitia (@CharlotteGShore) September 16, 2013
She had been spotted on a shopping trip with Falcone earlier in the day.
Following the party, first evictee Danielle Marr accused Anderton of trying to attack her - claims that a spokesperson for the model denied.
A rep for Anderton told Digital Spy: "Sophie did not attack Danielle in any way last night. Danielle sent one of her friends over to antagonise Sophie.

Marr – who made her name (apparently) on a show about Irish Housewives – faced stiff competition from boring but likeable Ron ‘I’m not racist’ Atkinson and Vicky Entwistle who the world knows better as Janice Battersby after being nominated to go by the ‘Cult of Celebrity’ house mates Sophie Anderton, Louis Spence and Lauren Harries.
It became apparent Ms Marr may be first to face the chop after crowds waiting outside the house began chanting “Get Danielle out”. Despite doing very little in the house (which is saying something) the Irish celebrity proved extremely unpopular with fans of the show and was greeted upon her eviction by a chorus of boos.
Despite fears of how she would be remembered for her time in the house and insisting she did...

Celebrity Big Brother's Louie Spence has been nominated for eviction.
The Pineapple Dance Studios star was chosen by fellow housemates Ron Atkinson and Vicky Entwistle, following Danielle Marr's eviction earlier this evening (August 28).
Big Brother granted Atkinson and Entwistle the power to nominate one housemate after they survived the first public vote of the series.
The pair were called to the Diary Room where they were asked to make a decision while their fellow housemates watched from the living area.
Atkinson put forward Lauren Harries as he said he would be interested to see how the public are reacting to her. He added that he has yet to make up his mind about her.
However, former Coronation Street star Entwistle disagreed with the suggestion and said that she would rather nominate Spence.

Celebrity Big Brother's Danielle Marr has become the first contestant to be evicted from the house.
The Dublin Wives star lost out in the first public vote of the series against former football pundit Ron Atkinson and actress Vicky Entwistle.
She was evicted to a mixed reception from the crowd following her exit from the house.
Cult of Celebrity members Louie Spence, Lauren Harries and Sophie Anderton were responsible for this week's nominations after being moved to a secret area of the house by Big Brother.
Anderton commented that Marr had no real reason to be there as she already has a career and has no need to boost her profile.
In her interview with Emma Willis, Marr explained that she wasn't surprised by her eviction as she is not known in the UK.
She said: "It is fine now I'm out actually and even in the last...

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Vicky Entwistle has spoken about her drunken behaviour on last night's show (August 26).
The former Coronation Street actress reacted negatively to Louie Spence's choice to nominate her for eviction this week.
Speaking to Vicky in the bathroom, Louie said: "Are you feeling like s**t Vicky or not? You made a bit of a tw*t of yourself. I wasn't sure if it was a task you had been given."
Vicky replied: "What, to get leathered?"
Louie joked: "To come in and just be that loud and do really bad stage whispers."
Later, Vicky spoke regretfully of the previous night's actions when talking to Big Brother in the Diary Room.
She said: "When you get leathered you just get a bit stupid. But I still was a bit hurt 'cos I thought well, he doesn't even know us, if you nominate because someone gets on your nerves,...

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Abz Love has revealed that he has Asperger syndrome.
The 5ive singer opened up about being diagnosed with the disorder after he was encouraged to come out of his shell by fellow contestant Sophie Anderton.
"Sophie was telling me that I need to come out of my shell and really shine, it's good advice, I can't knock that, but what people don't know about me is I've got this condition," Abz told Big Brother in the Diary Room.
"It's a kind of autism called Asperger's. It's a personal thing but it makes it difficult for me in certain scenarios when people want the sparkly bright Abz all the time."
He added: "I only found out a couple of years ago so it's all new to me but I'm trying to make the best of it."

Celebrity Big Brother housemate Sophie Anderton has said that she is doing the show to convince people she is no longer "a complete train wreck" after suffering from a drug addiction and anorexia.
The 36-year-old model claimed that it wasn't the money that attracted her to CBB, but the prospect of improving her reputation after her last disastrous reality TV appearance on Celebrity Love Island in 2006.
"I don't need the money, I've been working flat out for the last year," she told new! magazine. "I want to put a full stop on Sophie from the past and I want people to see me for who I am now, in recovery and clean for four years.
"For me, it's important because, let's face it, in Celebrity Love Island I was a complete train wreck."
Anderton added that she considers herself "lucky" to be alive, as at one point her drug dependency...

Former Loose Woman presenter Carol McGiffin had to be put to bed by a few of her fellow housemates after appearing to be completely intoxicated on Celebrity Big Brother last night (Monday, August 26).
As the 53-year-old TV personality was chatting to Mario Falcone and Louie Spence, she started to slur her words.
After McGiffin - who was wearing Courtney Stodden's studded baseball cap - struggled to get up off the sofa, Falcone and Geordie Shore's Charlotte Crosby stepped in and took her to bed.
Once in bed, McGiffin had difficulty taking off her trousers, so Anderton helped her to remove her clothes and tucked her into bed.
The star recently revealed in her Sunday People column, which she wrote before entering the Celebrity Big Brother house, that she was leaving the Loose Women panel after more than a decade on the show.
