In this brave new world of "Star Wars" fandom, it's almost unfathomable that there exist elements within the various films, novels, comics, and TV shows that don't have some sort of backstory or origin point. While obviously this stems from the huge fanbase for "Star Wars" loving the fictional universe so much that they wish to study and know absolutely everything that's in it, this trend also originated out of an inherent idea popularized by creator George Lucas with the very first movie in the franchise back in 1977 -- the implication that we're seeing a small part of a larger world, and every planet, ship, and creature we see (whether in the foreground or background) has its own history and story.
It's a powerful implication, and one that's essential to constructing a wholly fictional universe. Yet, of course, it's mostly hogwash -- or at least it used to be. While...

Exclusive: Paramount+ has released the official trailer for season two of the adult animated series Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head. The first two episodes will premiere April 20 in the U.S. and Canada, and in Australia and the U.K. on Friday, April 21, with further international markets to follow.
In the second season, Beavis and Butt-Head return as, natch, two guys who like things that are cool and hate things that suck.
Created and voiced by writer, producer and director Mike Judge, the characters originated in Judge’s 1992 short film Frog Baseball, which was broadcast by MTV’s animation showcase “Liquid Television.” After MTV commissioned a full series around the characters, Beavis and Butt-Head ran for seven seasons from 1993 to 1997. The series was revived in 2011 with an eighth season airing on MTV.

When it was first announced that Paramount+ was rebooting Mike Judge's beloved animated series, "Beavis and Butt-Head," fans of the original series were rightfully concerned that bringing everyone's favorite MTV buffoons into the current era was a recipe for disaster. And yet, after the wildly successful "Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe," Judge effortlessly incorporated his horny, mouth-breathing, lovable losers into the 2020s.
The first season of the "Beavis and Butt-Head" reboot was, quite honestly, the absolute best possible outcome. The structure of the series didn't change at all, instead evolved to better reflect our current times. The characters still end up in nonsensical adventures like getting trapped in a bathroom thinking it's part of an escape room (or enacting revenge on some raccoons for eating their nachos) and still have the interspersed asides of commenting on whatever is on TV. Instead of focusing primarily on music videos as...

The House of Representatives still doesn’t have a speaker after Kevin McCarthy has failed to win multiple votes for the leadership position, and late night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel are thrilled.
“No one, literally no one, and I called people who know things, no one knows what happens now,” Colbert said of the impasse in the Republican-led chamber, on CBS’ Late Show Wednesday night. “Here’s what we do know: It’s fantastic!”
Later, after a news clip was shown of McCarthy saying he wouldn’t withdraw from the race, Colbert said, “Oh Kevin, let it go. Don’t you know one of the things about dreams is sometimes they die? Except for my dream, where you keep losing over and over again!”
He continued to quip, “Nobody pinch me. I don’t want to wake up, mom. I don’t want to go to school today.

This article contains Beavis and Butt-Head spoilers.
It seems weird to put a spoiler alert on an article about Beavis and Butt-Head, but then again nothing about the pair’s success has been expected. After debuting 30 years ago in Mike Judge’s animated short “Frog Baseball,” the troublesome teens first found fame when that cartoon was aired on MTV’s legendary animation anthology Liquid Television. A spinoff quickly ensued, and the rest is pop culture history.
On the heels of the recent — and excellent — feature film Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe, the guys are back in a new series that is now streaming on Paramount+. But there’s a twist. Continuing on from the events of the recent movie, the pair are now living in 2022….as are their fortysomething colleagues from the original series, still as demented as ever.
Furthermore the “smart” versions of the characters make a return in this revival series.

“Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head” — a continuation of the cartoon franchise and the show’s first original episodes in more than 10 years — will premiere on Paramount+ beginning Aug. 4.
From creator Mike Judge and MTV Entertainment Studios (who was behind the original series), the fan-favorite characters are back and stupider than ever. The adult animated series picks up following the streamer’s original film “Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe,” released in late June.
The show’s trailer depicts the iconic characters in their signature AC/DC and Metallica T-shirts getting into a wide variety of foolhardy shenanigans, like angering a beehive and ruining a Mummy exhibit.

Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head series will arrive on Paramount+ Aug. 4, MTV Entertainment Studios announced Thursday.

Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head is executive-produced by creator Judge, Lew Morton, Michael Rotenberg, Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Ben Kalina, and Antonio Canobbio for Titmouse.

“Beavis and Butt-Head” are back on TV. A revival of the classic ’90s MTV animated series is set to premiere on Paramount+ on Aug. 4, the streamer announced Thursday. In addition, the streamer revealed a first trailer for the series, which can be watched below.
Created and voiced by Mike Judge in 1992 for the MTV animated anthology series “Liquid Television,” Beavis and Butt-Head are two teenage slackers who share an extreme libido and complete inability to attract women. The characters proved popular enough to launch their own spinoff series, which ran for 200 episodes across seven seasons. The show sees the pair embark on various half-baked schemes, as well as mock contemporary music videos that aired on MTV. The series launched another popular spin-off series “Daria,” starring the character voiced by Tracy Grandstaff, and was revived for an extra season on MTV in 2011.

I’m old enough to remember when Beavis and Butt-Head premiered on MTV back in 1993 and certain pundits greeted the misadventures of these two fire-loving, TV-obsessed juvenile delinquents as a sign of the pending cultural apocalypse. The characters were either a warning cry about a generation raised and desensitized by music videos or, worse, they were a potential inspiration for impressionable young viewers.
Those pundits didn’t understand the satirical edge of Mike Judge’s animated comedy, but if we’re being perfectly honest, neither did a lot of the show’s fans.
Nearly 30 years later, Beavis and Butt-Head are returning for a new run of episodes on Paramount+, preceded by the feature-length Beavis and Butt-head Do the Universe and one thing is shockingly clear: Beavis and Butt-Head may be puerile to a dangerous degree, but as alienated loners — at least they have...

Netflix's critical hit "Orange Is the New Black" picked up four nominations for the 2014 Writers Guild Awards -- where it's entered as a comedy series.
The show (and its cast) is entered in the drama field for some other upcoming awards shows, including the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. It's a bit of a tweener show, mixing both comedy and drama, but as there are no "dramedy" awards anywhere, it's a comedy for writing purposes.
Other multiple nominees for the WGA Awards include "Breaking Bad," "Modern Family," "30 Rock," "Masters of Sex," "The Simpsons" and another Netflix series, "House of Cards."

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

According to Deadline, Fox is bringing writer Lew Morton (Futurama) and director Jake Kasdan (Bad Teacher)—who previously worked together on the Judd Apatow TV series Undeclared as well as 2007’s Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story—are back together to develop a show for the network called Wentworth Hall. Exclusive: In his first foray into animation, director-producer Jake Kasdan has teamed with writer-producer Lew Morton for comedy Wentworth Hall, which has been put in development by Fox. 20th Century Fox TV, where Kasdan is under an overall deal, will produce. Based on an idea by Morton, who will write the script, Wentworth Hall follows a group of misfit college students making plenty of bad decisions while attending a once-prestigious university. Morton and Kasdan executive produce, and Kasdan’s producing partner Melvin Mar is producing. This marks Morton’s return to animation. The former Futurama writer-producer, repped by CAA, most recently co-created and executive the CBS comedy Rob. Wentworth Hall reunites Kasdan and Morton; they previously worked together on Fox series Undeclared and the movie Walk Hard. This marks Kasdan’s third sale this development season, following deals at ABC for a Kate Robin family soap and at NBC for comedy High Life.

CBS has officially picked up a new sitcom from Rob Schneider for mid-season. The currently untitled project will debut on the network in 2012, according to Entertainment Weekly. The series, based on Schneider's own life, will focus on a bachelor who marries into a large Mexican-American family. A pilot, written by Schneider and regular collaborator Lewis Morton, was originally picked up back in February. CBS later ordered additional scripts on the proviso that segments of the pilot (more)...

CBS has picked up Rob Schneider’s family comedy as a mid-season series replacement, Deadline is reporting. The untitled series, which didn’t make the cut for the Fall 2011 prime-time schedule, will include eight episodes. The network liked the comedy enough to order a revamped second pilot that featured major casting changes and several backup scripts. The multi-camera series, which is Schneider co-wrote with Lew Morton, is based on the actor’s real-life experiences. Schneider will star as Rob, who just married into a close Mexican-American family. Claudia Bassols will play his wife, Maggie, while Diana Maria Riva will portray his mother-in-law, Rosa. Both roles were recast from the original pilot. While...

CBS has added a comedy starring "Saturday Night Live" alum and frequent Adam Sandler co-star Rob Schneider to its midseason slate.
The show, which Schneider also co-created, is about a guy who's been on his own for most of his adult life and marries into a close-knit Mexican-American family. It's loosely based on his own life.
Spanish actress Claudia Bassols will play his new wife in the series. Cheech Marin, Diana Maria Riva, Eugenio Derbez and Lupe Ontiveros are also in the cast. Schneider, Lew Morton ("SNL," "NewsRadio") and Eric and Kim Tannenbaum ("Two and a Half Men") will serve as executive producers.
The untitled show was in the mix for a pickup in May at CBS' upfronts. The network didn't commit right away but ordered a new pilot with several roles recast. That one passed muster and will join the rookie-cops drama "The 2-2" as the network's midseason entrants.

Exclusive: Cheech Marin has been tapped to co-star opposite Rob Schneider in the actor's untitled CBS comedy, which recently received an order for another pilot and several backup scripts as it remains in strong midseason consideration. The multi-camera comedy, which Schneider co-wrote with Lew Morton based on the actor's real-life experience, stars Schneider as Rob, a confirmed bachelor who has just married into a tight-knit Mexican-American family. The retooling of the CBS Studios/Tannenbaum Co. project includes recasting three family members, Rob's wife and her parents. Marin will play Rob's father-in-law Fernando, a role played in the original pilot by Ugly Betty alum Tony Plana. In addition to Schneider, returning from the first pilot are Eugenio Derbez as the wife's uncle and Lupe Ontiveros as her grandmother. This past development season, Marin co-starred in another family comedy pilot, Fox's Outnumbered. Marin, managed by Anonymous Content, next reprises the voice of Ramone in Cars 2.

Exclusive: CBS has solidified the midseason chances of the untitled Rob Schneider comedy pilot with an order for a new pilot as well as a number of additional scripts. The multi-camera comedy, which Schneider co-wrote with Lew Morton based on the actor's real-life experience, stars Schneider as a confirmed bachelor who has just married into a tight-knit Mexican-American family. I hear CBS liked the concept and Schneider, who tested very well, but wants to make some tweaks. A number of actors who played members of the family will be recast. By ordering backup scripts, CBS puts the project on track for midseason. If the network likes the new pilot, the comedy will be able to go into production right away for a midseason launch. Back in May, CBS didn't order any midseason comedy series, leaving that decision for after the upfronts. The Rob Schneider project, from CBS TV Studios and the Tannenbaum Co.

This is an update of my Tuesday story that the Rob Schneider comedy pilot is in serious contention for a midseason order. CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler confirmed this morning that she plans to pick up comedy series for midseason and will focus on that when she goes back to Los Angeles. While she wouldn't elaborate which pilots are still in the running, I hear that the two that have a real shot are the untitled Rob Schneider and Peter Knight half-hours. The Rob Schneider/Lew Morton comedy is considered likely to go to series, while the Peter Knight still has a shot too.

CBS is keeping the untitled Rob Schneider comedy in strong contention for midseason. Since CBS ordered only two new comedy series, Two Broke Girls and How to Be a Gentleman, there has been speculation that the network may pick up a third one. Chatter quickly focused on the untitled Rob Schneider multi-ethnic comedy. I hear the show has been given permission to hire writers, which is usually a promising sign. There is no pickup decision by CBS yet, but the network has been in active discussions on the project, and a midseason order as early as today is a possibility. Alternatively, the network also has been mulling ordering a second pilot. In any case, the project is expected to undergo some retooling if it goes forward. The multi-camera comedy, which Schneider co-wrote with Lew Morton, stars Schneider as a confirmed bachelor who has just married into a tight-knit Mexican-American family.

The future of "Two and a Half Men" is, let's say, cloudy at the moment.
If we had to guess right now, we'd say that the show, which is currently the most-watched comedy on TV, will be back in some form -- with or without Charlie Sheen -- for 2011-12. CBS will announce its lineup for next season in mid-May, which means the network, Warner Bros. TV, creators Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn and Sheen have about two and a half months to figure out what happens next.
But what if the worst-case scenario for CBS happens and "Men" doesn't come back at all?
Yes, the network would probably suffer some in the ratings -- but it would probably also come out Ok. CBS also has the No. 2 and 3 comedies in terms of viewers in "The Big Bang Theory" and "Mike & Molly"; both shows are also in the Top 25 this...
