Burna Boy earned his metaphorical flowers — and his very literal bras — as he ripped through a majestic two-hour set at New York’s Madison Square Garden, the first Nigerian headliner to do so at the famed venue. The first fire-engine red bra was thrust onstage at the beloved Afro-fusionist early in his set as he performed “Rock Your Body,” from his breakthrough album, 2018’s Outside. By the end of the night, no less than six more had been flung at him — at one point, he hung several around his waistline like a utility belt.

Sia and Burna Boy have released a new animated music video for their upbeat single “Hey Boy.”
Directed by Rafatoon and created by the Dreambear production company, the visual for “Hey Boy” takes its cues from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, A Goofy Movie, and other Eighties and Nineties Disney cartoons. Sia is presented onstage as a voluptuous, Jessica Rabbit-esque singer, chased around by a horny anthropomorphic wolf. Burna Boy, backup dancers, and other characters throughout the video also appear as anthropomorphized animals, joining Sia in a vibrant and colorful concert sequence.

Burna Boy appeared Wednesday night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing a medley of songs off his latest album, Twice as Tall.
Stepping into a warehouse space, Burna Boy started off with his hit single “Wonderful,” spreading a positive message about finding home wherever you go. In January, “Own It,” a skipping, hummable collaboration between the English rapper Stormzy and the Nigerian singer Burna Boy, reached Number One on the U.K. charts.
The two reunite on “Real Life,” a highlight that appears near the end of Burna Boy’s new album Twice as Tall. The track endears itself immediately with cooing backing vocals that evoke T-Pain’s classic “I’m Sprung.” Burna Boy sings with his usual charisma, adding emotional heft to a lean, slippery beat, and Stormzy follows his collaborator’s lead, choosing to...

Film-maker known for his world music documentaries, in particular his Beats of the Heart series
Jeremy Marre, who has died aged 76, was a British documentary maker specialising in films about popular music of every possible kind. Widely travelled, and with eclectic taste, he had a lengthy career that included adventurous documentaries about music in Africa, the Americas, the UK and the Us, and profiles of artists such as Phil Spector, Roy Orbison, Youssou N’Dour and Count Basie.
His first major success was Roots Rock Reggae (1977), which grew out of an earlier commission on the British reggae scene for the ITV arts programme Aquarius. Deciding that he needed to go to Jamaica to fully understand the music, Marre “scraped together some money” and travelled to Kingston, filming in lawless areas of the city. Over the years, his guests included System of a Down's Serj Tankian, African pop legend Youssou N'Dour, Morocco's Master Musicians of Jajouka and many more. Here, in...

In 2012, musician J. Ralph earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, and it was a historic bid. "Before My Time," which he wrote for the film "Chasing Ice," became only the third song from a documentary to be recognized by the academy. This year he's penned two more tunes that could join that exclusive group: "We Will Not Go" from "Virunga" and "Until the End" from "Garnet's Gold." -Break- Photo Gallery: Oscars Out of Tune The two songs represent opposite ends of the musical spectrum: "Until the End" is an old-fashioned standard performed by Liza Minnelli and Wynton Marsalis while "We Will Not Go" is a defiant anthem featuring iconic African musicians Youssou Ndour, Salif Keita and Fally Ipupa. But despite creating music in a wide variety of styles, he insists, "There's no difference between any form of music. You're trying to distill an emotion and a m..."...

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans: "When once blasting the Cinéma Vérité documentary film movement, a movement driven by the desire for some form of indexical truth between film and the real world nurtured via a "fly on the wall" aesthetic, director Werner Herzog noted that "there are deeper strata of truth in cinema, and there is such a thing as poetic, ecstatic truth. It is mysterious and elusive, and can be reached through fabrication and imagination and stylization." Herzog, an eclectic director of both documentaries and fiction films, has often followed this approach in the past in both modes of filmmaking through one continuous approach. In the majority of his films, Herzog chooses to accentuate what are often tales of madness with an aesthetic focus that de-emphasize the drama in favor of the landscape and the role of nature in such processes, shifting film away from objective...

Fans of Peter Gabriel should be familiar with Youssou N'Dour, the Senegalese musician whose distinctive voice can be heard on a number of Gabriel songs, including "In Your Eyes" from the mid-80s. In Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's documentary, "Youssou N'Dour: I Bright What I Love", the widely popular musician is in the spotlight as he tries to navigate treacherous waters surrounding the release of his "Egypt" album. The work include a personal ...

A couple dozen musicians like Lily Allen, All American Rejects, Jet Li, Black Eyed Peas' Fergie, Duran Duran and Bob Geldof have combined forces to re-create the '80s hit "Beds Are Burning" by Midnight Oil, as part of the Kofi Annan-led Tck Tck Tck: Time for Climate Justice campaign. The track has been released for free, with an accompanying video, on the Climate Justice website. Other standout, international contributors include Serena Ryder -- who sings a large part of the verses -- Mark Ronson, Jamie Cullum, Melanie Laurent, Marion Cotillard, Manu Katché, Youssou N'Dour, Yannick Noah, Desmond Tutu, Amadou et...

In 2003, at the height of the Iraq War and at a moment of tense international debate about the role of religion in politics, the best-selling and highly influential Senegalese griot singer Youssou N'Dour released an album called Egypt. The record was a personal and spiritual expression of N'Dour's reverence for Islam—a vast departure from his previous, pop material—and its release, during the holy month of Ramadan, resulted in a firestorm of national controversy: The conservative Senegalese Muslim community decried the notion of combining faith and pop music, and the album instantly became taboo. Ads were pulled from the airwaves with no explanation and street vendors sent back cassette tapes.
Elizabeth "Chai" Vasarhelyi, the filmmaker best known for her 2003 documentary about young Kosovars who came of age during the war, was documenting the singer as he performed the album to live audiences all over the world. The resulting film,...

President Obama's speech in Cairo last week as well as the candid and heated debates in Iran during its contentious presidential election provide yet another opportunity to revisit the sterile images of Islam that dominate the discussion both in the West and throughout the Muslim world as well. That discussion is framed by Muslim terrorists or extremists on the one hand squaring off against secular but resentful populations on the other. That is one facet of a kaleidoscope, a potent one but in no way the only one. If there's any doubt on that score, a new documentary focusing on the career of Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour should dispel it utterly. "I Bring What I Love" is an elegiac, beautiful film, years in the making, and it will start playing in New York this week and then in Los Angeles...

The documentary "Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love" is a tribute to the Senegalese superstar singer Youssou N'Dour.
It follows him on a world tour, which takes him from Cairo to Dublin to Paris to New York's Carnegie Hall.
It also touches on the controversy raised by his Grammy-winning album, "Egypt." Seems some people don't think songs should include religious verse.
As directed and written by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, the film works best when we see N'Dour onstage. He has a great set of pipes and is nothing if not charismatic.

The glorious Youssou N'Dour will be gracing Bam on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6. His Friday show is sold out (but do call, as a limited amount of seats are available), and he's also performing at the Saturday night New York premiere of the documentary I Bring What I Love (this is the screening you want to be at, but it also opens in NYC on Friday, June 12). Directed by award-winning Tribeca Film Festival alum Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, the film follows the making of N'Dour's album Egypt. It's sure to be great (and way better, than, say, checking out Vampire Weekend!). Here's ticket information. Making Of was a big winner at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival, garnering Best Actor for Lofti Abdelli and Best Screenplay. It's the stirring and troubling story about a young man in Tunisia, a breakdancer who falls in with a group of militants. It's ...

Shadow Distribution has acquired North American rights to Chai Vasarhelyi's "I Bring What I Love: Youssou Ndour," a music-filled documentary about the Senegalese musician.
A devout Muslim, Ndour is shown working on his "deeply personal and religious" album, "Egypt," which he hoped would help promote a more benign portrait of Islam.
But "Love" also chronicles the album's disappointing reception among Muslims in Senegal, where it is denounced as blasphemous.
Vasarhelyi followed Ndour for more than two years in shooting the pic, with filming in Africa, Europe and the U.S. The helmer lauded the distribution deal with Shadow.
"Their enthusiasm for the film and their belief in the film's broad potential make them a perfect partner," Vasarhelyi said.
The film's original score was composed by Martin Davich and James Newton Howard.
Exec producers included Edward Tyler Nahem, Jennifer Millstone, Patrick Morris, Jack Turner, Kathryn Tucker and Miklos Vasarhelyi, with Sarah Price,...

Youssou N'dour: I Bring What I Love was shown at SXSW in a 35mm print. Director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi announced she'd brought it with her having last shown it in Burkina Faso three weeks ago, and it showed the wear-and-tear of having only one print to go around for a year: it was scratchy during the reel changes. But it was worth it: the doc had slow-burning visual texture and a sense of contextual place I don't really look for in documentaries anymore. I expect this to be the last time in my life I see a documentary screened in a print at a festival, and it was a good note to go out on. As the story of a controversy, N'Dour takes its time: the first half gives you Senegalese musician superstar N'Dour's normal routine, the second the fracas around his 2004 album Egypt. Vasarhelyi's obviously a fan, and...

From the law firm Frankfurt, Kurnit, Klein and Selz comes a press release announcing the New York State Court dismissal of case brought against doc filmmaker Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love. It's great to see a filmmaker challenging such a seemingly frivolous lawsuit and winning. Excerpted from the press release: The film centers on the controversy surrounding Grammy-award winning musician Youssou Ndour's release of his acclaimed album "Egypt." Plaintiff, a former attorney for Mr. Ndour, appears briefly in archival footage taken at a press conference. “Vexatious right of publicity claims often hamstring documentary filmmakers,” said Jessie Beeber of Frankfurt Kurnit, the law firm that represented Ms....

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.

New York - Beastie Boys rapper Adam Yauch will be introducing some U.S. moviegoers to a different kind of music: African pop.
Yauch's Oscilloscope Laboratories has nabbed domestic rights to the rockumentary "Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love," a portrait of the influential Senegalese musician.
Chai Vasarhelyi's film, set for an early Summer 2009 theatrical release in conjunction with Ndour's tour, covers two years in the life of the Muslim musician and controversy surrounding his songs about Islam. Oscilloscope's David Fenkel negotiated the deal with Celluloid Dreams' Bobby Allen and Hengameh Panahi.
Additionally, Regent Releasing hopes to sell audiences the the secret to happiness for just "$9.99." The distributor picked up North American rights to Tatia Rosenthal's stop-motion animated comedy. Geoffrey Rush and Anthony Lapaglia are among the voices who'll be heard when "$9.99," based on Etgar Keret's short stories, hits select U.S. theaters next spring. Regent's Mark Reinhart...

- Who better a judge for the potential reach of a music-themed documentary than a musician-turned-distributor chief. Adam Yauch's Oscilloscope have picked up the U.S. rights to the Celluloid Dreams' title that recently won over audiences at Telluride and Tiff. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love covers the singer's last 20 years in the biz and digs into the singer's frustration over the negative perception of his Muslim faith and composed Egypt, a deeply spiritual album dedicated to a more tolerant view of Islam. It was a critical and career-defining moment. Ndour’s brave musical message was wholeheartedly embraced by Western audiences but ignited serious religious controversy in his homeland of Senegal. Variety reports that Oscilloscope is looking at a mid-2009 release. ...

Excuse me. Are you Tracy Chapman?”
She hears the question everywhere she goes, and her response is always the same. First, her eyes flash with wariness and momentary distaste; she looks as if she were ready to deny it and walk away. Then she grins: it’s an embarrassed, nervous grin, not a happy grin. Then she looks down at the ground, and without raising her eyes, she nods her head, quickly and almost imperceptibly. And finally — the process has taken all of one or two seconds — she answers the question.
