Netflix has nabbed the worldwide rights to Lucy Walker’s documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa after a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
“It’s actually a fairy tale. You work for decades, and sometimes you have decades you’re doing everything wrong or nearly right, and then you have moments where you say I’m so glad I kept going,” Walker said of premiering the doc at TIFF during a Visionaries session sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter.
“Netflix is particularly good as it’s so global,” Walked added. A 2024 streaming release is planned for the documentary about Lhakpa Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to completely summit and survive Mount Everest. She climbed Mount Everest while bringing up two teenage daughters and recovering from an abusive marriage.
The film was shown as a work-in-progress at Toronto a year ago, before Walker returned for the world premiere.

Netflix has picked up worldwide rights to the documentary “Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa” out of the Toronto International Film Festival, TheWrap has learned. The sale comes on the heels of another high-profile pickup from Netflix, Anna Kendrick’s serial killer directorial debut “Woman of the Hour.”
The streamer will release the film in 2024.
Directed by Lucy Walker (“Of Night & Light”), the film tells the story of Lhakpa Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit and descend Mount Everest who is now a single mom working at a Connecticut Whole Foods.
“Lhakpa grew up in Nepal, illiterate and rejected by her family, and emigrated to the US without speaking English,” the official synopsis from TIFF reads. “When we meet her, she’s working as a dishwasher at Whole Foods in Connecticut, raising her teenage daughters, Sunny and Shiny, in a small apartment. She’s a single mom and spousal-abuse survivor.

Exclusive: Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to the documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa out of the Toronto Film Festival, Deadline can exclusively reveal.
The deal is the second in quick succession for the streamer, which less than 12 hours ago snapped up Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of The Hour, for $11 million. No details as to the financial terms were disclosed.
Pic’s subject, Lhakpa Sherpa, was the first Nepali woman to completely summit and survive Mount Everest. For anyone else, that might be the greatest challenge and achievement of their life. But for the unforgettable Lhakpa — now a single mother of three, based in Connecticut — it was just the start.
Hailing from Sk Global Entertainment, Obb Pictures, and Avocados and Coconuts, the doc was directed by Lucy Walker, the 2x Oscar nominee previously at TIFF with another tale of a female Everest climber in 2006’s Cinema Eye Honors Award-nominated Blindsight.

This post contains plenty of spoilers related to weddings and funerals in "Game of Thrones" and "House of the Dragon." Proceed as you would down the church aisle, at your own risk.
In the world of Westeros, to paraphrase Billy Idol, it's always a nice day for a Red Wedding. You might think "it's your funeral" to show up at one, but as we learned this week in "Driftmark," the latest episode of "House of the Dragon," actual funerals in Westeros can be dangerous affairs, too.
Basically, anytime you get a bunch of family members together for a big occasion, happy or sad, it's going to go sour, so we shouldn't be surprised at the events that went down in "Driftmark." The funeral of Lady Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell) after her death by dragonfire turned into a real Old Testament, eye-for-an-eye affair. Perhaps the first sign of trouble was the way Laena's husband,...

I am so grateful to the Tolkien Estate – and to our showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, executive producer Lindsey Weber, cast and crew – for their tireless collaborative efforts and boundless creative energy. The showrunners of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power promise their fantasy drama for Prime Video will feature all new stories and is not “a reboot or a retread” of what J.R.R. Tolkien fans saw in the movies.
“This is a new story for most who are going to be watching it. We weren’t interested in a nostalgia play,” showrunner Patrick McKay said Friday at the TCA summer press tour. “We felt that this show had to earn its place on the start, rise or fall on its own merits. There are different stories that you’ve seen before.”
“This is before Frodo, before the rings, the time during which the rings of power were forged,” showrunner J.D. Payne added.

As San Diego Comic-Con gets underway, the fan boy crowd can revel in Amazon Studios confirming what Deadline told you a long time ago: Howard Shore, 3-time Oscar winner for his work on The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has returned to compose the original main title theme for its blockbuster 465 million series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Middle-earth is coming to Amazon Prime Video, and while all seems at peace, a gathering storm threatens to lay it all to waste.
That’s the general vibe for the latest teaser trailer for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which the streamer released on Thursday, giving viewers a more detailed look at Prime Video’s highly anticipated series set within J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy world.
The two-and-a-half-minute preview focuses primarily on the two characters who also appear in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy from the 2000s: Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo), as they debate Galadriel’s dogged belief that a shadowy enemy believed to be vanquished is still very much a looming threat. As Galadriel is considerably older than Elrond (he eventually marries her daughter), she does not find his assurances that he knows from darkness to be all that comforting.

"As soon as you have a record offered up to you, you have to take it, but also you worry about not getting it," admits "Game of Thrones" producer Chris Newman on the red carpet of the TV academy's recent event saluting this year's nominated producers. Last week the HBO fantasy epic won eight trophies at the Creative Arts Emmys, just one away from the one-year record set by "The West Wing" in 2000. (Watch our entire red carpet Q&A below.) -Break- Related: Complete list of 2015 Creative Arts Emmy winners If "Game of Thrones" wins Best Drama Series, as Gold Derby predicts with leading 5/6 odds, the show will tie "The West Wing," and if it wins just one more -- either for Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Best Writing ("Mother's Mercy"), or Best Directing ("Mother's Mercy" or "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken") -- it will stand alone in the Emmy record books.

Considering the history we already know about HBO and renewing Game of Thrones, the news that the show is being renewed is only slightly surprising, and only because the show has officially been picked up for two more seasons, instead of just one. Even that is only mildly surprising after we found out that the premiere of the fourth season crashed HBO Go, and now that we know that it had the highest viewership the series has ever managed, it’s probably something of a no-brainer to think that the network would extend the series as long as makes sense.
This is not only good news for fans in the most obvious sense, but also because of the room to maneuver that a two-season cushion gives the production and writing staff for a series. Everyone probably felt pretty comfortable with the series anyway, but having two seasons to play with...

Less than a month now separates us from Season 4 of Game of Thrones. If you don’t have time to rewatch Season 3 to prepare, HBO has very kindly provided us with a where-we-left-off synopsis below, followed by a lengthy list of returning cast members and a reminder of their roles, a list of several newbies and a quick word about who they play.
After all that come the somewhat spoilery synopses of April episodes. They’re pretty vague, but it may at least indicate who survives from episode to episode. I’m happy to report that there will be at least one Hodor sighting, but I’m not telling when; you’ll have to look for yourself.
Following that press release, check out the TV spot and press release for the free downloadable hip hop and reggaeton 10-song mixtape inspired by Game of Thrones, entitled Catch the Throne. Because why not?...

Hollywood filmmakers who have shot in Iceland have added their support in a fight against plans by the government of Reykjavik to slash state support of the local film industry. Directors Clint Eastwood, Darren Aronofsky and Terrence Malick; Game of Thrones producers Davod Beniof and Chris Newman; G. Mac Brown, executive producer of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Judge Dredd producer Beau Marks are among the group that have signed a petition saying they stand “with the entire film community in Iceland, in their efforts to maintain the current levels of government support for filmmaking” urging the Icelandic

As the Icelandic Film Fund is battling proposed government cuts of 40% for 2014, a group of filmmakers has signed a statement of support for the Icelandic industry.
The supporters include Clint Eastwood, Darren Aronofsky and Terrence Malick, whose films Flags of Our Fathers, Noah and Tree Of Life have all shot partially in Iceland.
As Screen previously reported, more than 200 jobs could be lost because of the proposed cuts. In its 2014 budget, the Icelandic government is proposing a 40% cut to the Icelandic Film Fund, the organisation that supports Icelandic filmmaking through screenwriting, development and production grants. This is the second time in recent years that the Icelandic government has planned to deliver such a blow to local industry — In 2010 the government had proposed a 35% cut to the fund, but eventually enacted 25%.
The second round of budget talks will be held on Dec 13 (Friday) with the final bill to be voted on next week.

HBO‘s Game of Thrones is well known for its amazing production values, with unrivaled locations and a voluminous cast. Sometimes, though, the location and cast aren’t enough to convey the vast, epic sights and numbers required for the series. No worries, of course, because they have SpinVFX on board, with the most spectacular, seamless visual effects ever produced for a series.
We’re happy to share the latest gasp-inducing featurette released by the company, which showcases highlights of their Season 3 work, along with a press release giving credit where it’s due.

The epic Hall H was the site of the epic Game of Thrones panel on the Friday of Comic-Con 2012. On the panel were Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark), Rose Leslie (Ygritte), and Richard Madden (Robb Stark). Author George R. R. Martin served as moderator, and he did an admirable job with his questions for the cast and for executive producer Carolyn Strauss who was also on the panel. Kit Harington (Jon Snow) had been expected on the panel but was injured recently (don’t worry, it’s not supposed to affect his role in Season 3).
The panel began with Martin introducing this Season 2 recap featurette, followed by a new cast featurette:
Featurette: Game of Thrones Season 2 Recap (Comic-Con)
Featurette: Game of Thrones Season 3 – New Cast Members
The appearance of Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Doctor Who, Phineas and Ferb) on the video received a terrific ovation,...

This week's review of HBO's "Game of Thrones" (Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO) is going to be a little different: It's a combination review of "What Is Dead May Never Die" and an interview with executive producer D.B. Weiss.
I spoke to Weiss on the day that "Game of Thrones" was renewed for a third season, and he shared his thoughts on the renewal and the length of the season.
In this second part of the interview, which is below, Weiss discusses how long he and fellow executive producer David Benioff might need to adapt George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, the challenges of the production and what's different about Season 2. He also has some choice words for a certain Marvel superhero movie. (It makes sense in context, I swear.)
But before we get to all that, I'd like to offer a few...

If you’ve been keeping up to date with our Game of Thrones interviews so far, you’ll know that I attended a round-table interview with some of the cast and producers of the show. They were in town for the press launch of the Season 1 DVD/Blu-ray, which is available now. We reviewed it Here.
Ahead of tomorrow’s (Us) highly anticipated Season 2 Premier, here is the final interview with Writers and Executive Producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
Benioff is the author of The 25th Hour, his debut novel that he also adapted into a screenplay. The film starred Edward Norton and was directed by Spike Lee. He has also written scripts for Troy (2004), Stay (2005), The Kite Runner (2007), and X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009).
Fellow author Weiss’ debut novel is titled Lucky Wander Boy. He is currently working on the script for the I Am Legend prequel film.
