In this workplace comedy, a group of dedicated, passionate teachers — and a slightly tone-deaf principal — are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life. Though these incredible educators may be outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do — even if they don’t love the school district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children.

“Abbott Elementary” is back in the Emmy race again with its sophomore season after achieving multiple awards successes at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In its first Emmy outing, the show was a threat to win Best Comedy Series, having picked up writing and casting awards, along with a Best Supporting Actress victory for Sheryl Lee Ralph. This year it added to its tally with an additional nomination, garnering eight against last year’s seven, and all notably for a full network season of 22 episodes. Read on for a closer look at “Abbott Elementary’s” eight Emmy nominations.
Just like last year, “Abbott Elementary” is the only broadcast network show cited in the Best Comedy Series race (and all top series races for that matter) about the lives of teachers being documented at an underfunded elementary school that is predominantly Black. Finding actors for Abbott Elementary‘s coterie of impressive guest stars was no easy task for casting director Wendy O’Brien, who juggled A-list schedules, Covid-19 restrictions and child labor laws to help bring season two of the ABC sitcom to life.
After the massive critical and commercial success of season one, securing interested talent was not the problem: “Part of the joy of season two was that Abbott had already exploded,” O’Brien explains. “We were having agents and actors reaching out to us saying they were fans of the show, if there was ever anything that they could be right for.”
Creator Quinta Brunson had one actor in mind to play her character Janine’s mother, Vanetta: “Taraji [P. Henson] was a dream of Quinta’s,” O’Brien says. “But she’s extraordinarily busy. It’s not easy to nail down her schedule. When we were reaching out to her reps to gauge interest,...

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

[This story contains major spoilers for the Dave season three finale, “Looking for Love.”]
If Dave breakout Tenea Intriago had made her high school basketball team she (probably) never would have found herself holding Brad Pitt and Lil Dicky hostage on screen in the FX comedy’s season finale. The 4-foot-11 actress says she’s always dreamed big and, until then, had her sights set on the WNBA. When she didn’t make the cut, she turned to theater and hasn’t looked back.
“I feel like I’ve been really lucky, because I started my Hollywood journey in the South,” Intriago tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I moved to New Orleans in 2012 and joined an acting class. I had heard that there were movies being filmed here, and that year I booked my first movie. So, it’s slowly just been a climb.”

There’s little point in comparing Showtime’s “American Gigolo” with the cult film of the same name — the new series borrows the basic premise of Paul Schrader’s exceptionally stylish neo-noir, along with a few characters, then sets them adrift in a rote crime drama. Where the original “American Gigolo” captured the excess of the 1980s while presenting a captivating portrait of loneliness, its supposed sequel struggles to find purpose or even settle on a tone in its first three episodes.
So, thank God and/or casting director Wendy O’Brien for placing Jon Bernthal, who’s already turned in one extraordinarily kinetic performance this year, at the center of this otherwise meandering murder mystery. The “We Own This City” actor leads the series as Julian Kaye, a sex worker who’s wrongfully convicted for murder, imprisoned for 15 years, and exonerated — all in the hourlong series premiere. “Abbott Elementary” has been performing well this TV awards season, but at Sunday night’s Creative Arts Emmys the ABC sitcom may have launched itself into an unlikely place — frontrunner to win Best Comedy Series at Monday’s Primetime Emmys. Wendy O’Brien won Best Casting for a Comedy Series over rivals from “Barry,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Hacks,” “Only Murders in the Building” and “Ted Lasso.” This prize has matched up with top series honors for the last seven years in a row.
Up until 2015, splits between these categories were common. “Modern Family” took both awards for its first season in 2010, but then lost the casting prize four consecutive years to “Glee,” “Girls,” “30 Rock” and “Orange is the New Black” while maintaining its stronghold as the top comedy. Since then, “Veep” won both three years in a row followed by “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Fleabag,” “Schitt’s Creek” and “Ted Lasso.

The second night of the Creative Arts Emmys will take place on Sunday night, where hot races such as guest acting, music and stunts will be revealed.
History could be made with “Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers” from Disney+ could be the first animated movie to win for outstanding television movie, after becoming the first ever to be nominated.
However, we could see if HBO will be in line to make history if it takes the category for Barry Levinson’s “The Survivor.” HBO is able to win all the top series categories for drama (“Succession”), comedy (“Barry” or “Hacks”) and limited (“The White Lotus”). It would be the first network in history to win all four if achieved.

The acting awards tend to be among the most anticipated recognitions doled out at the Emmys every year, while several below-the-line awards are announced off-the-air. It makes sense, given that the lead, supporting and guest actor categories are where all the A-list names are housed, but it’s one of the quieter races that provides the TV Academy with talent to root for in the first place: the Emmy awards for casting.
Among the 20 nominations earned by “The White Lotus” are noms for stars Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Natasha Rothwell, Sydney Sweeney, Murray Bartlett, Jake Lacy and Steve Zahn. Casting director Meredith Tucker describes the process to cobble together those actors as “fast and furious.”
“We didn’t start casting until after Labor Day, and they wanted everyone in Hawaii by Oct. 15,” she says. “But we were one of the few new shows that was actively casting. Most...

It's a grab bag this week! One of (almost) everything!Pilot: Wendy O'Brien is casting the MTV comedy pilot "Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous," scheduled for a June shoot. The show stars YouTube comic sensation Bo Burnham, who…meh. Maybe I'm too old, but he seems like a cross between a homeless man's Lonely Island and Daniel Tosh. He's popular with people too young to know who Mc Paul Barman is, which, evidently, now includes MTV development execs.Dance movie: Colbert/Mento is casting "Step Up 4," the fourth movie in the series of dance films, which are kind of awesome if you like dancing and/or hate dialogue.Zombie movie: Colbert/Mento is also staffing up "Warm Bodies," an adaptation of Isaac Marion's novel about a zombie who falls in love with the girlfriend of a victim. I'm waiting to hear on start dates for both of these films.

The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. Dakota Fanning, star of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, has clearly been touched by an angel - that is, the very capable hands of costume designer Carol Beadle - on set The Runaways.
