Long before Queen Elsa, Madonna took the world by storm with “Frozen.” It’s a haunting ballad and stands apart from much of her work by because it’s emotionally provocative rather than sexually provocative. While nothing about the song’s lyrics is controversial the tune was still banned in Belgium for years. Here’s a look at why that happened and why the band was eventually lifted.
Madonna’s ‘Frozen’ was the subject of 2 legal cases with 2 different results
Whenever a song gets too big, it seems like plagiarism cases lie just around the corner. According to MuuMuse, Belgian songwriter Salvatore Acquaviva claimed Madonna’s “Frozen” plagiarized the opening bars of his song “Ma Vie Fout L’camp.” Acquaviva won a copyright case against the Material Girl in 2005. For that reason, “Frozen” was banned in Belgium, halting all sales and radio play of the song.

Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and every king has a court. It’s no surprise he worked with several other megastars across genres over the course of his life. Some of those collaborations are classic and others are tragic.
1. Justin Timberlake
“Love Never Felt So Good” is a posthumous disco duet with Justin Timberlake. It’s not as good as Jackson’s classic disco tracks but it has an infectious, cherry energy. It feels more like a prequel to Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” than anything else.
The song has some great timing. It came out in 2014. 2013 saw a huge revival of disco music with hits like Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” Bruno Mars’ “Treasure.” while it was a song from the vaults, “Love Never Felt So Good” felt practically modern! The tune appeared on the posthumous album Xscape. Xscape is not Thriller,...

Madonna‘s Ray of Light is many things but it’s not a trashy album. Despite this, seven of the songs from Ray of Light might’ve ended up in the trash. One of the producers from the album recalled an experience that terrified him while he was working for the Queen of Pop.
A producer lost a tape with songs from Madonna’s ‘Ray of Light’
Patrick Leonard was one if the power players in Madonna’s career. He co-wrote many important songs with her, including “Frozen,” “Like a Prayer,” “La Isla Bonita,” “Cherish,” and “Live to Tell.” During a 2017 interview with Boy Culture, Leonard recalled something that happened to him when he worked on Ray of Light , the most important techno album of all time. “I had a terrifying experience,” he remembered. “When we were leaving Miami, having written them, I had a cassette that just said ‘M...

In November 2020, an online account took to YouTube to create an 86-minute compilation of outtakes from Madonna’s Music album. More than three years later, the unreleased song list has landed in longtime collaborator and record producer William Orbit’s lap. The British musician, who worked with the pop powerhouse on Music, Ray of Light, and Mdna, admitted on Instagram Monday that he’s become a fanboy.

Happy birthday to Ray of Light, the masterwork that introduced the world to Cosmic Psychedelic Madonna, 20 years ago this week. Ray of Light was the queen’s first proper album in four years, dropping on March 3rd, 1998, a week after she unveiled her new sound with the single “Frozen.” It was Madonna’s motherhood album, after giving birth to daughter Lourdes. It was her avant-techno move, with U.K. producer William Orbit. It was her spiritual-awakening statement. But Ray of Light holds up as her most soulful and passionate music...

Two late, great performers come back to life on a new album compilation from Queen. Queen and Michael Jackson sing together on the song "There Must Be More to Life Than This," just one of three previously unreleased songs from Queen frontman Mercury on "Forever Queen," due on Nov. 11. Mercury's first solo hit "Love Kills" with Giorgio Moroder also gets an unheard ballad version on the set, as does unreleased "Let Me In Your Heart Again" from Queen's "The Works" sessions. The rest of the single and double-disc releases are "a definitive collection of Queen’s timeless love songs," cobbled together by surviving members Brian May and Roger Taylor. The tracklist is made up of "things that we have collected together that are representative of our growth rather than the big hits,” said May in a release. On the Jackson and Mercury song, streaming above: The Queen and Michael Jackson duet,...

Britney Spears isn't the first—or the last—person to use auto-tune. What's the big deal? That's the attitude producer William Orbit adopted after an unedited version of the song "Alien," off Spears' 2013 album Britney Jean, leaked online last week. He even defended her on Facebook—multiple times. When he first stood up for Spears, he wrote, "Warming up is essential if you're a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do properly." Spears has yet to address the controversy. In his second post, Orbit wrote, "I never thought that this debate would be quite so heated." "Autotune has always been a hot-button topic. Not...

It's just her against the music. Weeks after an auto-tune-free version of Britney Spears' "Alien" leaked online, the pop superstar is still getting flak for digitally altering her voice on the finished product. Her producer on the song, William Orbit, doesn't get what the big deal is, and has repeatedly defended the singer on his Facebook page. After first trying to diffuse the controversy by telling critics that the leaked clip was of Spears' warm-up, music industry veteran Orbit -- who has worked with the likes of [...]...

After an unedited version of .Alien., from Britney.s upcoming album Britney Jean, was leaked recently, her producer William Orbit has taken to the internet to defend her. The producer says .Autotune has always been a hot-button topic. Not as much as the issue of photoshopping in the fashion press. But more than say, the use of CGI, looping and stunt doubles in the movies...Regardless of the fun and games that we have with studio production, the main thing to keep in mind with Ms. Spears is that tens of millions (hundreds of millions?) of people enjoy the music. That's pretty much the be-all and end-all of it..
Earlier, on Facebook, he had defended her, saying warm-ups were essential for any singer, and its normal if it takes time. Britney Spears has yet to reply on the subject or make any kind of official statement. We all love the .Toxic. hitmaker,...

Britney Spears has emerged, y'all! The singer flashed her megawatt smile while running errands in La's Westlake neighborhood on Saturday. Donning a white tank top with "Aloha State" written on the front, black shorts, and flip-flops, Britney grabbed coffee at a Starbucks inside a strip mall near her home in Calabasas, CA. The singer's casual appearance comes mere days after a raw recording of her vocals went viral. As criticism of her voice without Auto-Tune mounted, producer William Orbit clarified that Britney was just warming up her voice in the leaked clip. On Thursday, William wrote a second Facebook note about the controversy, defending Britney and "Alien," the song in question. "Regardless of the fun and games that we have with studio production, the main thing to keep in mind with Ms. Spears is that tens of millions (hundreds of millions?) of people enjoy the music," he wrote. "And charisma is charisma.

Britney Spears’ raw vocals for her song “Alien” were leaked on Monday, and many were quick to criticize the singer on her off-key vocals.
"Alien" Producer Defends Spears
The track was rumored to have been the original vocals to the song without auto-tune, but “Alien” producer William Orbit said that the raw vocals that were leaked were just a warm-up.
“I’d like to affirm that Any singer when first at the mic at the start of a long session can make a multitude of vocalizations in order to get warmed up. Warming up is essential if you’re a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do properly. I’ve heard all manner of sounds emitted during warmups. The point is that it is not supposed to be shared with millions of listeners,” Orbit wrote on Facebook, defending Spears.

Today the internet is up in arms about a leaked vocal track from the Britney Jean recording sessions — an un-Auto-Tuned version of "Alien." Here's what it sounds like:(And, for comparison, here's the actual recording of "Alien.") ... Yeah. In case you were suspicious, it's been confirmed as real by the song's producer, William Orbit, who took to Facebook to defend Spears (who herself has yet to comment): "Warming up is essential if you’re a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do properly. Against all odds, Britney Spears's last outing, 2011's Femme Fatale, turned out to be the best album of her career, proving that she could still compete in the dance-pop diva derby against Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna. Unfortunately Britney Jean (out Tuesday) doesn't build on that creative momentum. Surprisingly it's the uptempo tracks - and not the slower stuff - that let Spears down. None comes close to the euphoric high of Femme Fatale's "Till the World Ends." The clubby first single, "Work B----," was campy fun initially, but it doesn't hold up well after repeat spins. That...
