"When your life becomes a living nightmare, one tends to see joy in the darkest of corners." Vertical Ent. has already released this indie thriller on VOD earlier this month, but we're just catching up with the trailer for it now. Sheltering Season is directed by Pacific Northwest actor / filmmaker Bradley Stryker, made up in Canada on a small budget. A woman finds herself isolated in her remote home with her brother who is seeking forgiveness for the darkest moment in their family history. "It soon becomes a race against time for her husband, Rex, and the authorities to intervene and in the midst of the chaos, Lilly must come to terms with her brother's sins." Starring husband and wife actors Caitlin Stryker and Bradley Stryker in the lead roles, with Teach Grant, Olivia Cheng, Patrick Gilmore, Agam Darshi, Juan Riedinger, and Tahmoh Penikett. It doesn't look it's original or interesting in any way,...

If I’ve learned anything from Trick ‘r Treat, it’s that you don’t disrespect Halloween. “I hate Halloween,” says Emma (Leslie Bibb) in the opening scene. She blows out the lone jack o’lantern and whines to her husband Henry (Tahmoh Penikett) about taking down the decorations on Halloween night. Moments later, she gets her comeuppance and becomes bloody and artsy décor on the front lawn. Her head is chopped off and her limbs hung with rope in the trees, a pumpkin lollipop shoved into her gaping mouth. Sam might be tiny, but he suffers no fools when it comes to the beloved holiday. It’s a gnarly image that drives home the film’s central theme: Halloween is sacred and should be treated as such.
With the long-awaited theatrical run this October, Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat remains an emblem for great anthologies everywhere and perfectly...

"Someone else was here?" "Did she see anything…?" "Yep." Signature Ent. has released their own UK trailer for The Last Victim, described as a "neo-Western thriller" about a small town sheriff chasing outlaws. It already opened in the US a few months ago, but why not another trailer since it looks like a solid film. The Last Victim is a small town crime thriller set in the American southwest, following Sheriff Hickey who is trying to solve the worst case he has seen in his jurisdiction, likely caused by a violent local gang led by a fearsome criminal. When a young professor and her husband cross paths with the gang, they are drawn into a chain of vengeance where morality is ambiguous and survival is the only priority. The thriller stars Ali Larter, Ron Perlman, Ralph Ineson, Kyle Schmid, Tahmoh Penikett, and Tom Stevens. This film doesn't seem too bad...

While staring glassy-eyed at interminably long stretches of “The Last Victim,” I was reminded of a ‘60s variety show sketch I viewed during my adolescence. The premise of the skit: Producers of some returning fall shows were told at the last minute that their series had been expanded from 30 to 60 minutes, and they had to stretch scripts that had already been written. So everything — walking down hallways, rifling through files, preparing coffee, everything — was done very, very slowly. The sketch, as I recall, was amusing. “The Last Victim” is not. At least, not intentionally.
The latest in a seemingly endless line of neo-noir thrillers with a neo-western gloss, “The Last Victim” plays like the work of people who watched “Blood Simple” and “No Country for Old Men” several times, slapped themselves on the forehead and said, “Hey! We can do that!” Not so, based on the evidence presented here. Instead,...

"If you don't belong in the world no more, you'll end up with only two choices – escape it... or change it." The film is opening in early May in a few weeks, after premiering at a festival in Germany last year. What do attractive teens get up to in 2020? They vape and go on that TikTok, right? Wrong! They form cults. Honestly, kids today. Back when I was young, I used to drink alcohol until I lost control of my body and my Mum had to come and rescue me. As God intended.

If you combine Lifetime, Ann Rule, and the esteemed Diane Neal, you get another ripped from the headlines thriller that will have you on the edge of your seats.
Circle of Deception is the latest Ann Rule true crime inspired piece to make it to the small screen, and as fans of the books and the Lifetime films know, they're among the strongest of the Ripped from the Headlines series.
And much like Lifetime actress Robin Givens helmed Ann Rule's A Murder to Remember, this time around, it's another network veteran, Ashley Williams, making her directorial debut.
From the promos, the standout of the film is Law & Order Svu's Diane Neal. She stars as a former Beauty Queen who orchestrates a murderous scheme.
The film is about a small island community that is rocked by the mysterious death of Russel Douglas, played by Paul McGillion, the day after Christmas.

I think you all know me by now and realise that I am willing to give pretty much anything a fair shake. The Sinners synopsis did read like a bit of a change pace as well, moving into the more teen angs drama territory with a promise of some sort of “Mean Girls meets The Craft” hybrid. Taken 2 x 11, “Password” is the best of the season. It has a compelling story that actually makes you curious for more. It may be too little, too late, but let’s save that for the wrap-up. Most of this season has been about establishing the new characters, which was necessary. Nevertheless, Bryan Mills (Clive Standen) got lost in the shuffle. He now has a tangible goal – taking down David Ramsey (Tahmoh Penikett). It’s a goal shared with Christine Hart (Jennifer Beals) and in this area, it finally feels like the equal partnership discussed in the season’s premiere episode.

Altered Carbon is as gritty as its source material, boasts impressive visuals, and is the perfect TV entry point for cyberpunk fans...
The hunger with which fans of cyberpunk will devour Altered Carbon, Netflix's noir adaptation of Richard K. Morgan’s definitive novel, is not up for question. The television landscape hasn’t yet spawned any classics of this particular sci-fi sub-genre the way cinema has with the likes of Blade Runner or even the more controversial Ghost In The Shell (although some are in the works), so the field is wide open for this series in which minds are downloaded into new bodies to prolong life. Fortunately, Altered Carbon succeeds on its own many merits, not just because of the dearth of competition.

The world of independent television is pretty chaotic right now, largely because, unlike the indie film scene, there’s no clear trajectory to success. Some shows threw all their money into shooting a pilot. Some shows have shot multiple episodes. Some shows have found alternate distribution opportunities already. Some shows remain unseen. All of them, though, want to go beyond their current status.

As an attendee of SeriesFest 2016, I had the opportunity to see a large percentage of the pilots screened as part of the independent pilot competition. Some of these pilots were not world premieres, but all of the ones I saw represented the impressive state of independent production today; where a shoestring budget can still produce content on a level equal to what you might watch on TV. Below are just a few of the pilots that impressed me most,...

Winning for Best Drama was “Farr,” a crime drama set in Northern Ireland (which also won the same prize at last fall’s ITVFest). Per the drama jury’s statement, “The pilot we would like to recognize is ‘Farr’ since we were invested in the characters and storyline. We can’t wait to see how it unfolds!”
Best Comedy was awarded to “Truth Slash Fiction,” which revolved around a teenage girl’s discovery of erotic fan fiction. According to the jury’s statement, “We decided to recognize work that exists as a true pilot – establishing a mood, conflicts, characters, relationships and an ongoing story that would make a compelling series. Next week sees the release of Painkillers, the sci-fi action thriller starring "Battlestar Galactica" star Tahmoh Penikett and badass character actor Colm Feore.
The movie, directed by The Patriot director Peter Winther, stars Penikett as the leader of a military squad whose latest mission leaves them without memories while Feore plays a nefarious scientist (which, by the way, he's great at) who is running tests on the remaining squad members.
It's a fun little movie with some solid performances and I was pleased to have a chance to talk with Penikett about it before the holidays (take a listen to that interview here) and now we're ha [Continued ...]...

We have an exclusive clip to share with you featuring two of our country's better known exports in the genre circles, Colm Feore and Tahmoh Penikett (BSG). Feore plays Dr. Troutman and he is interviewing Penikett, a U.S. Marine after his mission went all pear shaped. Painkillers tells the story of a squad of marines sent on a classified mission deep in the war-torn mountains of Afghanistan, but when they find the mysterious item they were sent for... it's not what they were expecting. The DC Universe's next animated film, Justice League: Gods and Monsters is hitting blu-ray next month, but before it hits, you can check out the first clip from the film, showing how the alternate reality team handles the world...
I'm very excited to see what Justice League: Gods and Monsters has to offer. It's a very different take on the heroes we all know and love, and DC's animated films are almost always impressive and fun to watch. So this little adventure should be interesting indeed, especially based on this first clip:
Animation legend Bruce Timm returns to the popular DC Universe Original Movies with his unique new vision of a Justice League you’ve never seen before. "Justice League: Gods & Monsters" features a Superman born of General Zod’s blood, a Batman with a healthy dose of bat in the man, and a Wonder Woman rising from the ranks of the New Gods.

Here's how short fantasy film The Portal, starring Tahmoh Penikett, was turned into TV series Riftworld Chronicles...
A not so very long time ago, in this galaxy, in those geeky communities where the card-carrying members of the geek clubs congregate, a trailer was making its rounds for a certain short film. Entitled The Portal,” it starred Tahmoh Penikett (of Supernatural and Battlestar Galactica fame, thus upping the geek factor some more) and promised an intriguing premise: the dimension-travelling wizard Alar (played by the aforementioned Penikett) accidentally ends up in our magic-less, technology-full world, and attempts to navigate it. Hilarity, naturally, ensues. Fans watched the trailer, shared, liked, commented, and demanded, when do we get to see the damn thing?
Tempers grew. Frustrated keysmashes occurred. The question was repeated again and again. Supernatural aired some more episodes with Penikett, and everyone wanted to see the charming and adorably clueless Alar battle...

Strategic Partners, a presentation of the Atlantic Film Festival, has announced the producers selected to participate as part of the inaugural project exchange with Mexico’s Los Cabos International Film Festival and Brazil’s RioContentMarket, in addition to an incredible line-up of producers and projects. As part of a two year spotlight on Latin America, one Mexican producer with a feature film in development and one Brazilian producer with a television project in development have been invited to participate at Strategic Partners 2014, September 11 - 14 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A Canadian feature film in development will then be selected from this year’s Strategic Partners to participate at Los Cabos International Film Festival, November 11 - 14, 2014. Additionally, a Canadian television project in development looking for Brazilian co-production partners will be chosen to attend RioContentMarket, February 2015. This initiative is sponsored by the Canadian Media Production Association.

Galvão will bring the highly anticipated television miniseries, The Gardener, to this year’s Strategic Partners.

Supernatural, Season 9, Episode 21: “King of the Damned”
Written by Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming
Directed by P.J. Pesce
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on The CW
Throughout the season, there has been two wars for power, as Abaddon has threatened Crowley’s position as the ruler of Hell, while Metatron has set himself up as Angel enemy number one by tossing everyone out of Heaven. With Castiel reluctantly taking up the mantle of resistance leader, Metatron no longer remained uncontested, while Abaddon continued to pose the biggest threat to the world and the Winchesters. This week’s episode sees major blows delivered on both wars, in a compelling outing that sees a key Angel potentially switch sides.
Castiel and Gadreel forming an uneasy alliance is a fascinating development. Since Gadreel was revealed to be falsely residing in Sam, it has been clear that the Angel...

If we completely ignore the fact that last week’s episode happened, and I’m hoping we all do, Supernatural was finally back this week from a bit of a hiatus and it became crystal clear that we’re racing towards the season finale and a big battle/cliffhanger that will set up next season.
I Am Your Commander
There was lots of development this week to move the story forward but none tickled my fancy as much as watching Castiel as the commander of the rebel angel forces. Actually, I’m not even sure if his are the rebel forces or Metatron’s are because, quite frankly, I checked out of the angel storyline about two seasons ago.
As it was hinted a couple of episodes ago, the angels who were not following Metatron’s plan for world domination or whatever, were left aimless after Castiel took out Bartholomew (those eyes…...

We don't know about you guys, but we're gonna just forget that last week's episode of "Supernatural" happened and instead focus on tonight's Ep. #9.21, "King of the Damned." In fact, here's a clip to help wash away any remaining traces of the bad taste left by that whole spinoff idea.
"Supernatural" Episode 9.21 - "King of the Damned" (airs 5/6/14, 9-10pm): Castiel (Misha Collins) captures one of Metatron’s angels (guest star Gordon Woolvet) and asks Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) for help with the interrogation.
Dean eagerly accepts, which doesn’t go unnoticed by Sam.
Meanwhile, Abaddon (guest star Alaina Huffman) demands Crowley (Mark Sheppard) help her kill Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). When he refuses, she reveals her shocking bargaining chip.
Also, Castiel (Misha Collins) sets a meeting with Gadreel (guest star Tahmoh Penikett). Pj Pesce directed the episode written by Eugenie Ross-Leming and Brad Buckner.

Last night, CW released the new promo/spoiler clip (below) for their upcoming "Supernatural" episode 21 of season 9, and it appears that things will get quite serious and intense as evil Abaddon is back on the scene, causing major problems for Dean and Sam, and more! The episode is titled, "King of the Damned." In the new, 21st episode, Abaddon is going to order Crowley to help her destroy Sam and Dean. However, he will refuse, but might succumb to a shocking bargaining chip. Meanwhile, Castiel will imprison one of Metatron's angels, and will get Dean and Sam to contribute their services in the interrogation shake down. Guest stars are going to include: Mark Sheppard as Crowley, Alaina Huffman as Abaddon, Tahmoh Penikett as Gadreel, and Misha Collins as Castiel. Episode 21 is scheduled to air on Tuesday night, May 6th at 8pm central time on The CW. Stay tuned.

Kevin Clash cleared of charges, Zac Efron koala’s Nick Grimshaw, Tahmoh Penikett is one confused wizard
Archie Comics has announced that Kevin Keller will end with issue #15, but the character isn’t going away. “To be clear, we’re not canceling the book: It’s ending so we can take a minute to plan a relaunch for the character. In the meantime, Kevin will continue to be a big part of the other Archie titles— including Afterlife with Archie.”
Buzzfeed covers for Madonna calling kale “gay” in the most Buzzfeed way possible.

I’ve been trying to figure out a way to discuss last Sunday’s Game of Thrones but end up stuck trying to find a way to word it without being spoilery. However, The Daily Banter nicely sums up why it’s ridiculous to keep calling that one scene shocking when the whole episode was full of shocking brutality.
Tahmoh Penikett seems like The CW’s new featured hunk. The former Battlestar Galatica star recently showed up on Supernatural and Star Crossed. Now, E! reports that he’ll be appearing on the season finale of Reign.
One of the challenges of taking the fake news show format pioneered by The Daily Show to a premium channel like HBO — the lack of commercials. Really. Last Week Tonight producer Tim Carvell explains, “We realized early on, you don’t necessarily want to hear anybody talk to you for a half an hour straight.

Supernatural, Season 9, Episode 18: “Meta Fiction”
Written by Robbie Thompson
Directed by Thomas J. Wright
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on The CW
While Metatron’s actions at the end of last season sealed off Heaven and tossed every Angel out, his movements over the course of this season have established that his plans are far from over. With an explicit desire to replace God, and a willingness to kill even those who might tangentially stand in his way, such as Kevin, Metatron has emerged as a major threat. This week’s episode delves into his mindset, and how Metatron views himself, in a superb episode that pushes Castiel down a path he’s reluctant to walk.
Metatron’s view of himself as the hero of a story he’s writing is an interesting insight into the character. While he is unquestionably thirsty for power, it...

This season of The CW’s Supernatural has been a little out of control, especially with the fallen angels, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) doing a lot of fighting—not that that’s anything unusual. What is unusual about this episode is that it seems as though Metatron (Curtis Armstrong) has decided to take matters into his own hands and come up with his own version of a story. Meanwhile, Sam and Dean are still on the hunt for Abaddon (Alaina Huffman). Their research gets interrupted, though, when Castiel (Misha Collins) calls with news that Gadreel (Tahmoh Penikett) is still up … Continue reading →
