Whenever a certain franchise is popular there are bound to be references and parodies from all cross media. Star Wars is no acceptation to that rule. From movies such as Spaceballs and Thumb Wars poking fun at the scenarios to skits in Saturday Night Live there is always something to make sport of. Including in the form or materials meant for “older audiences”.
That is what comic creators Mike and Mindy Wheeler were doing. They were/are in the process of making a comic titled “Star Whores: Episode IV – A New Hoe”. A mature themed parody comic based on Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The couple have also produced mature parody comics in the past such as “Trip Story” (Toy Story) and “G-Busters” (Ghostbusters).

Lady Death fans will be getting a video game to call their own. Franchise creator Coffin Comics has announced that Lady Death Demonicron, a canonical beat-em-up video game in the Lady Death universe, has been funded on Kickstarter and is currently in development for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and the Nintendo Switch, courtesy of developer Art of Play Games.

Welcome back to another installment of Panel Discussion – this time featuring reviews of a handful of books that I’ve recently added to my pull list, including The Punisher, West Coast Avengers and La Muerta.
The Punisher #3
Matt Rosenberg’s fantastic run on Punisher continues with issue three, which picks up from the cliffhanger ending of #2 as Daredevil tries to bring Frank Castle to justice, only for the subway car their in to become overrun with numerous enemies, all wanting the massive bounty on the Punisher’s head. Which means this issue is action-packed, and I do mean Action packed. From beginning to almost end, The Punisher #3 is non-stop action and violence. Which means there’s not much room for story… making this book feel a little like a filler release. Not a bad example of a filler book, more a pause in the story if you will. And whilst...

Brian Pulido has been a staple of independent comics since the mid-eighties, and has been through the wringer when it comes to the business he has helped bring to the forefront with his creations like Evil Ernie and the goddess of Hell that still stands stronger today, Lady Death. From his company in the ’90’s, Chaos Comics, Pulido has felt the waves of success as well as as defeat. But he persevered, and always rose like a warrior from the ashes, always having an ever sworn legion of fans cheering him on to the next battle.
After having to deal with licenses and lawsuits, Brian and his loyal and equally important wife, Francisca, have once again formed a dynasty, a highly lucrative and successful company aptly named Coffin Comics. I know each and every one of you sat dumbfounded last Saturday morning – your coffee in hand, and morning paper tucked firmly under arm – when perusing ComicMix and not seeing your weekly dose of Fishtastic opinions. I apologize to you. There’s no excuse for it. Simply put, I was at the New York Comic Con with my studio, Unshaven Comics, and I was too busy to produce a column worthy of your eyes. But I return this week with my now yearly diatribe about the largest pop culture convention my Lilliputian league of ne’er-do-wells attends.
If I were to be bold… it sucked. Our sales were levels of magnitude lower than any year past. As it’s the most basic measure of our meager success, I am apt to shake my head and angrily declare the six-day excursion a near-bust. But why?
On paper, everything was in our favor.

Brian Pulido, creator of the comic Lady Death and the feature film The Graves, is set to appear on Syfy’s "Foxy and Co.," a reality show showcasing the special effects makeup work of "Face Off" favorite Eric Fox and his team, tonight, March 18th, at 10Pm.
For the show Pulido directed a proof of concept short film entitled Zack the Zombie Exterminator, a horror/comedy about Zack Zander, an amiable redneck metal head with a talent for zombie-splatting who runs “Z-Gone", a family business that “disposes” of the undead.
Pulido and screenwriter Mike MacLean (Sharktopus, Piranhaconda) developed Zack for multiple entertainment platforms.
Simply stated, Zack the Zombie Exterminator puts the fun back into zombie-splatting. Zack is a gross-out spectacle full of zombie guts and exploding brains. It’s slapstick Wtf humor, cringe-worthy and cathartic, and what better guy to fulfill this mad vision than Morbx Fx’s Eric Fox,...

This is the time of year when the ComicMix crew starts to firm up our attendance at various comic conventions in the year ahead. It’s a frustrating process because there are a lot of shows and we can’t go to all the ones we’d like to attend.
It also makes me really angry.
Last year was the first in a long time that I went to a bunch of cons. It was fascinating and fun most of the time, but annoying at others. Twenty years after we started Friends of Lulu, there are still remarkably few women invited to be guests at the shows.
This is odd, because there are a lot of women working in the industry, and (capitalists take note) even more buying comics and tickets to cons. Wouldn’t show organizers like to demonstrate to this market segment that they are welcome and valued?...

DC Comics
Comics, especially those outside of the fights n’ tights mainstream, are an efficient, direct, and aesthetically beautiful means of storytelling. While it costs millions for Hollywood’s Iron Man to blast a bad guy through a wall, Jack Kirby’s Iron Man could do the same for a cup of coffee and some art supplies. The reader does the rest of the heavy lifting, no effects budget required. (Unless you count allowance money spent on cases of nutmeg in the seventies. Bless you, Jim Starlin…)
Still, Hollywood has gotten better at adapting comics, and not just those from Marvel and DC. Movies like American Splendor and Ghost World have already proven that some stories are universal, even those that began as lowly, static images drawn by odd loners. If the source material is approached with respect, the comics on this list would make fine films and television shows…...

Jesse Snider is a comic book writer with a huge task in front of him. He is currently in the process of bringing Evil Ernie back to the racks. And if his first two issues are any sign of what's to come, the future is bright for the Evil one. Snider recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about the book.
Son of legendary rock star Dee Snider, Jesse Snider's deep love for the Evil Ernie character and the Chaos! universe led him to tackling the task of evolving Ernie, as he feels what worked for the story in the 90's should be modified for greater appeal to today's audiences. He discussed why he felt Brian Pulido's original Evil Ernie character needed new life.

Boccaccio ’70 (1962)
Synopsis: Four legendary filmmakers direct some of Europe’s biggest stars in Boccaccio ’70, a landmark anthology film. Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), Federico Fellini (8½), Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) and Vittorio De Sica (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) direct Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider and more through four stories of unashamed eros. Modeled on Boccaccio’s Decameron, they are comic moral tales about the hypocrisies surrounding sex in 1960s Italy. Monicelli’s “Renzo e Luciana” (cut out of the original American release) is a frothy tale of young love and office politics in the big city. Fellini’s notorious “Le tentazioni del dottor Antonio” features Ekberg as a busty model in a milk advertisement whose image begins to haunt an aging prude. Visconti’s “Il Lavoro” stars Romy Schneider as a trophy wife enduring her husband’s very public affairs,...

Garth Ennis has been a highly respected comics writer for well over 20 years now, creating some of the most badass storylines for several of the best modern genre-related comic series including Preacher, The Punisher, The Boys and Hellblazer.
Now the acclaimed storyteller is taking his career in a brand-new direction: writing and directing, and Ennis celebrated the world premiere of his short film Stitched during the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con Independent Film Festival last week.
During the convention Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Ennis about his directorial debut Stitched and how he plans to balance out his directing career alongside his career in the comic world (which he has no plans for leaving behind any time soon despite his jump into filmmaking).
Check out our video interview with Ennis below, and look for more on Stitched very soon!

Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.
The Last Exorcism (Review)
Directed by Daniel Stamm
Starring Patrick Fabian (Interview), Ashley Bell, Louis Herthum, Tony Bentley

Okay, so this week we have covered the "Top Five Indie Horror Films," with an article found here: Best Indie Horror Films of 2010. Also covered was the "Top Five International Horror Films." An article on this posting is here: Top Five International Films. But, now we are exploring a more depraved side of horror, or a lower class of film. This top five list will cover the "Worst Five Horror Films of 2010!"
This year, there was so much to choose from in poor horror films. Abroad, we have the dismal Basement starring Danny Dyer and Jimi Mistry to the absolutely monstrosity of a film from Australia called Outback aka Prey starring the incapable Natalie Bassingthwaighte. Domestically, films like the Zombie Chronicles: The Infected made this reviewer want to scratch his eyes out, while others like Apocalypse of the Dead aka Zone of the Dead made one reach for the off button with lightening like reflexes.

It’s not often we write articles about award-winning performers here on Dread Central, which makes this all the more exciting for yours truly. This past weekend Deon Taylor (Dead Tone, Chain Letter) invited Dread Central exclusively out to his set in Los Angeles to give us a look at the revamping of his Night Tales (previously Nite Tales) brand of horror.
Previously hosted by everyone’s favorite hip-hop hype man Flavor Flav, the new Night Tales will be hosted by Stacey Dash (Clueless) as a vampiress, demonstrating a new, serious and sexy direction for both the television series as well as the feature film.
In addition to the new direction of Night Tales, Taylor also introduced us to his brand new producing partner, Oscar and Grammy Award winner Jamie Foxx. The collaboration marks Foxx’s first true foray into the horror genre, something that excites the renowned actor greatly.

Whilst it may sound like just another hillbilly horror, “The Graves” does at least have one point of interest in having Brian Pulido at the helm, better known as the creator of Chaos Comics, and the writer of such classics as “Lady Death” and “Evil Ernie”. The film also stands out somewhat from the increasingly crowded subgenre playing field thanks to a promising cast of fan favourites, including Bill Mosley, Tony Todd, and even Amanda Wyss, who older viewers may remember from way back in 1984 as the unfortunate Tina from the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Having gone down well at La’s After Dark Horrorfest in 2010, the film now arrives on region 2 DVD via Anchor Bay, coming complete with a number of extras, including audio commentary from Pulido and various behind the scenes featurettes and blooper reels. The plot might politely be described as nothing new – the busty,...

More than just a simple market for nasties, the After Dark label stands for quality by way of authenticity, delivering horror films by genre lovers for genre lovers. Shock Till You Drop caught up with fan fave actor Bill Moseley at tonight's La premiere of The Graves , now playing as part of After Dark Films Horrorfest 4. "I didn.t know Brian Pulido before doing The Graves ," says Moseley. "I actually liked working with him a lot. He.s a first time director, but he was very collaborative and very encouraging. For me, although movies are a collaborative effort, you ultimately defer to the writer or director, but it.s fun to work together and try to find new things about the different scenes and different characters. Brian was very open to that and very generous." One project with Moseley's involvement that we're intrigued about is the new animated 3D take of Night Of The Living Dead: Origins from director Zebediah...

Shock caught up with writer/director Brian Pulido at tonight's premiere of The Graves in Los Angeles, which is now currently playing in theaters as part of After Dark Films' Horrorfest 4, "8 Films To Die For". In The Graves , two inseparable sisters (played by Clare Grant and Jillian Murray) are on a cross country trip when they decide to make a pitstop at a remote (and supposedly haunted) mining town. Their detour turns into a fight for survival against menaces both human and supernatural. Having the dynamic between the lead characters be two siblings isn't the norm for horror movies these days, but it was something Pulido wanted to explore with The Graves . "I.m a big horror fan myself," he confesses. "So we all know about the serial murder...

Director Brian Pulido didn't have to look much farther than practically his own backyard when he was seeking inspiration for his next horror project. He found that the state of Arizona provided the right landscape to create a chilling supernatural journey with his telling of The Graves.
"The story of The Graves is a mélange of things that interest me," explained Pulido. "I like to visit weird kitschy places in Arizona, and we found this place called Vulture Mines. It just stuck with me. I immediately thought this would be a great location for a movie, so it inspired me to write The Graves. Instead of six or seven twenty-year-olds, I was more interested in telling a story of these two sisters, which seemed to be a little different than what we've seen recently for horror film trends," Pulido added.

In the past three years, the After Dark Horrorfest has done much to give smaller-budgeted spine-chillers a chance to be seen as they were meant to be: on the big screen. Many of these films have been the creations of ambitious newcomers, and for its fourth installment (running January 30-February 4), one of the titles picked for inclusion was The Graves, the feature writing/directing debut of Brian Pulido.
The fledgling filmmaker is no horror neophyte, though: Comics fans know and revere him for titles like Evil Ernie and Lady Death, which brought heavy-duty splatter to the illustrated page. He’s been dying to make the jump to movies for years now and managed to snag horror icons Tony Todd and Bill Moseley for The Graves—not bad for a first-timer.
“After writing and publishing for over a decade, and writing 250 horror comics, I craved making a horror flick,” Pulido says.
