A sequel to 2018’s Truth Or Dare would have brought its cast back in novel fashion, only for the pandemic to lead to its cancellation.
Nb: The following contains spoilers for 2018’s Truth Or Dare.
Released in 2018, Truth Or Dare was far from the most acclaimed film to emerge from the Blumhouse horror stable, but it was still a huge hit comparative to its budget.
As a result, director Jeff Wadlow and his surprisingly large roster of co-writers began to think about a sequel. The problem was, most of the cast from the original film had already died at the hands of the vaguely Ikea-sounding demon, Calux.
Their solution? Borrow a post-modern move from Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, and make a pull back-and-reveal movie about Truth Or Dare's cast encountering Calux in the ‘real’ world.
Speaking to Variety, Jeff Wadow talked about the planned sequel – which may...

The 2018 Blumhouse chiller “Truth or Dare” was a profitable hit for the company, making over $95 million worldwide on a $3.5 million budget. The film — about a demon named Calux that is activated by the titular party game — starred a buzzy cast full of young talent, including “Teen Wolf” lead Tyler Posey, “Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale, Violett Beane, Landon Liboiron and Sam Lerner, who all bonded offscreen during filming. That camaraderie led to a sequel idea that could have been one of Blumhouse’s most innovative movies.
While talking about his upcoming film “Imaginary,” Jeff Wadlow, who directed “Truth or Dare” and co-wrote it with Michael Reisz, Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach, revealed the ambitious plans for a sequel that almost started production during quarantine.
“We actually wrote a ‘Truth or Dare’ sequel,” he said. “In the first one, there’s about nine characters and seven of them die. I...

CBS is looking to explore not Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity but one of his relatives, with an adaptation of the three-season German procedural Einstein.
The latest Stateside attempt to adapt the German series, however, would flip the gender of its title character as well as take on issues relative to modern-day policing.

Exclusive: CBS is taking another shot at adapting the German police procedural dramedy Einstein, this time with major changes to the original concept.
The 2017 German series was a police procedural dramedy about the unknown great-great-grandson of Albert Einstein, a theoretical physics professor, who helps the police in solving murder cases.
The CBS take, written/executive produced by Insatiable creator Lauren Gussis and executive produced by American Gothic creator Corinne Brinkerhoff, centers on a roguish, out-of-the-box-thinking physics professor who happens to be the secret, illegitimate great-granddaughter of Albert Einstein. She begrudgingly partners with a Boston homicide detective not only to help solve the most puzzling of crimes, but also to address the problems ever-present inside the institution of policing itself.
In addition to switching the gender of the Einstein great-grandchild title character, the adaptation also provides 2020 perspective on policing, which has come under major scrutiny following the death of George Floyd.

The latest low budget horror flick from Blumhouse Productions is about a demonically possessed game of Truth Or Dare that kills off its players. If you can get past that admittedly ridiculous premise, there are just enough creepy chills and thrills to make this worth your while, even if it never quite manages the supernatural horror of something like It Follows (an obvious influence).
Directed by Jeff Wadlow, the film centres on socially conscious college student Olivia (singer-slash-actress Lucy Hale), who’s coerced into accompanying her friends on a spring break trip to Mexico. After a drunken night at a bar, Olivia falls in with Carter (Landon Liboiron), who suggests that she and her friends follow him to...

Freeform’s fantasy drama series Shadowhuners will be ending after its current third season. While the cable network has opted not to pick up a fourth season, it will give fans closure, ordering two extra episodes that will wrap the story. The expanded 12-episode final season, dubbed Shadowhunters: The Final Hunt, is set to air in spring 2019.
Freeform originally ordered a 10-episode third season, later ordering 10 back episodes. Season 3A wrapped its run May 15. While there had been no premiere date for Season 3B but those episodes are already in the can, so the only way to get a proper ending for the series was for Freeform to greenlight a finale.
That way the series also will cover all Mortal Instruments books, on which it is based. The current third season goes over books 4 and 5; the two-hour finale will be based on the sixth and final novel in the series.

Warner Bros./New Line’s “Rampage” stomped its way into movie theaters on Thursday night, making $2.4 million from preview screenings.
That amount is nearly double the $1.25 million made in previews by one of Dwayne Johnson’s 2017 releases, “Baywatch,” which opened to $18 million and became a rare domestic disappointment for the blockbuster star.
Also Read: 'Rampage' Star Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia Share Their Trailblazing Plan for Hollywood Dominance (Exclusive)
It’s also above the $2 million made in preview screenings by “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” though “Rampage” does not have the positive critical reviews that sequel had with a mixed Rotten Tomatoes score of 55 percent. It remains to be seen whether “Rampage” can resonate with Johnson’s audience enough to push the needle beyond the $35-40 million it is expected to make domestically this weekend.
The film stars Johnson as a biologist who must calm his companion albino gorilla when a strange contagion turns it, a wolf, and a crocodile into giant beasts that destroy Chicago. Based on the classic ’80s video game, “Rampage” is directed by Brad Peyton (“San Andreas”) and also stars Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Joe Manganiello, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Also releasing this weekend is Universal/Blumhouse’s “Truth Or Dare,” which made $750,000 in previews at 2,400 locations. That’s below the $1 million made by Blumhouse’s “Happy Death Day,” which came out last October and opened to $26 million. “Truth Or Dare” is expected to open to half that amount, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 18 percent and a production budget of $3.5 million.
“Truth Or Dare” stars Lucy Hale as a teenager who, along with her friends, is haunted by a malevolent spirit who forces them to play the titular game with deadly consequences. Jeff Wadlow (“Kick-Ass 2”) directed the film from a script by Michael Reisz, with Jason Blum producing.

After a weekend defined by genre pieces, the new release list has returned to CGI-heavy blockbusters looking for big bucks in Asia. Warner Bros., which is still hauling in studio record returns from China with “Ready Player One,” will now send in New Line’s “Rampage,” the next film from Dwayne Johnson after “Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle” grossed $950 million worldwide this winter.
At a time when fewer and fewer actors and directors are drawing in moviegoers while the emphasis gets put on franchises and brands, Johnson has defiantly stood against the trend. Even when he’s had a few disappointments like “Baywatch,” he’s rebounded quickly with films like “Jumanji,” which became Sony’s highest grossing film in studio history outside of the “Spider-Man” franchise.

But even with The Rock, “Rampage” is going to need help from overseas as it is expected to gross $35-40 million domestically this weekend against a reported $115 million budget. The film stars Johnson as a biologist who must calm his companion albino gorilla when a strange contagion turns it, a wolf, and a crocodile into giant beasts who destroy the city. In other words, this is a kaiju film, a genre that is popular in Asia. It’s especially popular in Japan, where the film has some rather boisterous marketing.
But to achieve that success, “Rampage” will have to do better than “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” another kaiju film that was released nearly three weekends ago to a global opening of $150 million, but after which has seen a sharp drop in receipts. Currently holding a global total of $262 million, it’s becoming more and more likely that the sequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s film will wind up in the red.

On the other hand, a more successful result for “Rampage” would be if it could reach $400 million overseas, something the studio came just a couple million close to reaching last year with their previous giant ape film, “Kong: Skull Island.” That film made $168 million in China, $398 million total overseas, and $566.6 million worldwide. “Kong: Skull Island” had a domestic opening of $61 million, so “Rampage” won’t likely reach that global mark. But if Asia responds to “Rampage” the way it did to Kong, it could find profit.
Based on the classic 80s video game, “Rampage” is directed by Brad Peyton (“San Andreas”) and also stars Naomie Harris, Malin ?…kerman, Joe Manganiello, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. New Line Cinema produced the film.
The other new release this week is “Truth Or Dare,” the latest film from Universal and Blumhouse. The film is expected to open to $12-15 million, meaning it will most likely fall on the charts below last weekend’s big horror hit, “A Quiet Place.”
Also Read: 5 Reasons 'A Quiet Place' Became Horror's Latest Box Office Sensation
Still, “Truth Or Dare” has two big things going for it. First, Blumhouse has built a very strong audience of young, female moviegoers, which helped boost the numbers of several of their past horror titles like “Split” and “Happy Death Day.”
The other big advantage is Blumhouse’s now-industry-famous microbudget approach to filmmaking, never spending more than $5 million on a film unless its a sequel to a proven franchise launcher. With a production budget of $3.5 million, “Truth Or Dare” won’t need to make much to get into the black.

Finally, Fox Searchlight will expand Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” to 1930 screens nationwide after three weekends in limited release. Last weekend, the film made $4.6 million from 554 screens bringing its total to $12.3 million. Searchlight projects the film will make an additional $5 million this weekend, bringing it closer to the $20 million mark.

Lucy Hale is not opposed to indulging in a game or three on the small screen. Across seven seasons of hit mystery-thriller Pretty Little Liars, the actress wormed her way into our hearts and minds as Aria Montgomery, the sharp-suited chameleon of Rosewood who went on to tie the knot with Ezra.
The Pll faithful are currently bracing themselves for the show’s seventh and final season, which is expected to air later in 2017, but we now have word that Lucy Hale has landed a gig beyond the realm of Pennsylvania. Per Variety, the actress has sealed a deal to headline Truth or Dare, a supernatural thriller in the works from Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow.
Hale, meanwhile, is expected to take point as “a college student in Mexico who is conned into playing a supernatural version of Truth or Dare. The game doesn’t stop and follows her back home.

Wes Craven is keeping busy on the small screen front. He's executive producing MTV's Scream TV series (debuting June 30th) and now it's been revealed that Craven has agreed to a first-look deal with Universal Cable Productions and has two horror TV series adaptations in the works at Syfy.
According to Variety, Craven is working to adapt both his 1991 film, The People Under the Stairs, and Daryl Gregory's novel, We Are All Completely Fine, as respective TV series for the Syfy network.
Michael Reisz will write and executive produce The People Under the Stairs pilot, which is "described as a contemporary “Downton Abbey” meets “Amityville Horror,” “People Under the Stairs” focuses on centuries-old horrors discovered deep within an estate after a girl goes missing." Craven, Shep Gordon (who also executive produced the 1991 film with Craven) from Alive Productions, as well as Tracey Murray and Sara Bottfeld from Industry Entertainment, will also executive produce the project.

We've already had remakes of A NIghtmare On Elm Street, Last House On The Left and The Hills Have Eyes. Now with Scream heading to MTV, Wes Craven is digging yet again in his back catalogue for another project to dust off himself. The one he's come up with is The People Under The Stairs, which he's developing as a series for Universal Cable Productions and SyFy.The original People is a 1991 horror about an La ghetto kid who stumbles into the house of Mommy and Daddy Robeson and finds a community of cannibal children hiding in the cracks. Many have noted the resemblance of the Robesons (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie) to Ronald and Nancy Reagan, and therefore interpreted the film as a bitter satire on American society. But Craven has always denied that political reading, and the pitch for the series seems very different anyway. We're told it's...
