The Oscar-frontrunner “Dune” (Warner Bros.), “Nightmare Alley” (Searchlight Pictures), and “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios) each won sound editing feature awards Sunday night at the 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards (held virtually). “Dune” took feature effects/foley, “Nightmare Alley,” a non-Oscar nominee and surprise winner over “Dune” and “No Time to Die,” snagged feature dialogue/Adr, and Oscar nominee “West Side Story” collected feature music. The other Oscar sound nominees are “Belfast” (Focus Features), “No Time to Die” (MGM/UA), and “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix).
There were other surprises: Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” triumphed in animation over the studio’s Oscar-frontrunner, “Encanto,” which has won a slew of guild awards, and “The Rescue” (Disney+) took feature documentary over Oscar-frontrunner “Summer of Soul” (Searchlight Pictures). Additionally, “Cliff Walkers” (Viki) earned foreign language honors, and “Infinite” (Paramount +) grabbed non-theatrical feature.

Darius Marder’s experimental “Sound of Metal” — the Oscar favorite for Best Sound — was surprisingly snubbed at the 68th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards for sound editing on Friday, but it rebounded on Saturday to take sound mixing honors at the 57th annual Cas Awards. The sound editors presented a three-way split between Aaron Sorkin’s multi-layered courtroom drama, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (dialogue/Adr), “Greyhound,” the World War II battleship action/adventure (effects/foley), which is an Oscar sound nominee, and Christopher Nolan’s time-inverted “Tenet” (underscore). Pixar’s “Soul,” which took the Golden Reel for animation, is also in the Oscar hunt for sound. However, the other two Oscar nominees — “Mank” and “News of the World” — were completely shut out.

“Tenet,” “Eurovision Song Contest,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Greyhound” have won feature-film awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors Mpse Golden Reel Awards, which took place on Friday evening in a virtual event.
The Mpse divides the art of sound editing into several different categories, with “Tenet” winning for underscore, “Eurovision Song Contest” for music, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” for dialogue/Adr and “Greyhound” for effects/foley.
In the past, the last of those categories has most closely corresponded to the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing — but that Oscar category was merged with the Best Sound Mixing category into a single Best Sound category this year. “Greyhound” is nominated in that category, along with “Soul,” “Mank,” “News of the World” and “Sound of Metal.”

The taut Tom Hanks action film “Greyhound” is set in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in 1942, as a convoy of battleships dodge enemy torpedos. Practically the entire movie was filmed on sound stages or aboard the docked U.S.S. Kidd in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Visual effects provided the aesthetic reality — but sound effects deliver the visceral, you-are-there quality that makes the scenes whizz and whoosh.
“Greyhound” was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for Best Sound, the first film released by Apple TV+ to receive Oscar attention. (The company’s “Wolfwalkers” was also nominated in the Animated Feature race.) The four sound mixers, Warren Shaw, Michael Minkler, Beau Borders and David Wyman, talked to TheWrap about the aural design of one specific scene, which you can watch below in three different sound versions.
The scene finds Hanks anxiously navigating his gargantuan ship as it is fired upon by two simultaneous torpedos.

The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

Even though the release of Prometheus has been a polarizing one for movie fans, the overall consensus is that it is a brilliantly made movie from a technical perspective. Even the haters and mediocre reviews point out the striking visuals and classy use of 3D. What often gets lost in this discussion is the sound design and mix, which is as important to making a film as any visual elements. The good folks at Soundworks Collection have released a brief-yet-detailed look into the sound of Prometheus, presented by Dolby. Included in the video are Supervising Sound Editors Mark Stoeckinger and Victor Ennis, Sound Re-recording Mixers Ron Bartlett and Doug Hemphill, Sound Designers Ann Scibelli and Alan Rankin, and Sound Effects Researcher Charlie Campagna. Fans of sound design will enjoy hearing about the creative and often low-tech elements that inspired the high-tech sound mix. The sound team talks about how they preserved the sound from Ridley Scott‘s...

The Soundworks Collection has revealed the latest installment in their continued series of featurettes dedicated to the sound of motion pictures, this time examining the work put into Ridley Scott's Prometheus, a film sure to be on the tip of Internet tongues all week. In this featurette you'll hear from supervising sound editors Mark Stoeckinger and Victor Ennis, sound re-recording Mixers Ron Bartlett and Doug Hemphill, sound Designers Ann Scibelli and Alan Rankin and sound effects researcher Charlie Campagna. The video runs just under 13 minutes and you'll see what role a Coke can, Pop Rocks and a Xerox machine played into the sound design along with a Blue Front Amazon Parrot that actually helped provide the sound for the much-talked about and most horrific scene in the film as well as beeps and even some of the film's creatures. There's also a segment where Campagna starts talking about getting...

Visual effects people get all the loving. The fast cars, the pretty girls and all the bling for the Hollywood scene just rains down on them. While the visual effects people are lounging by the pool, waiting for the days and days it takes to render their splashy neon pew pew on your latest Sci-Fi epic, the sounds dudes are crammed into Russian trains, clacking along into the frozen yak filled steppes, recording toilets flushing. Audio effects require field work. You have to bang a ton of things together and record a lot of lawn mowers, blenders and whining power lines to get something you can eventually haul back to base to start tweaking. In the case of the opening door sound effect for the new “Star Trek”, Ann Scibelli recorded an air powered toilet flush on a train in Russia. That’s pretty cool. Sound Nerds rule. There’s...
