The Book of Mormon, the Tony-winning musical comedy by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez, will resume Broadway performances at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on Friday, Nov. 5, producer Anne Garefino announced today. But there might well be some changes.
The show’s writers will begin rehearsals with the cast in the Fall, having agreed to discuss and possibly adjust elements of the show deemed racially problematic. Several months ago, twenty actors from the original and most recent Broadway casts signed their names to a letter asking the writers and producers to reevaluate aspects of the show.
The irreverent show’s depiction of Africans has been a much-discussed topic in theater circles since matters of Broadway’s entrenched racism took on renewed scrutiny following last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests. In a People TV interview last July, original cast member Josh Gad, asked about a potential film adaptation of the musical,...

We’ll be honest: We weren’t expecting to spend the penultimate day of 2016 writing about two separate projects centered on a 12-year-old vehicle for the nonsense word “fetch.” But that’s exactly what’s happening, with two different takes on Tina Fey’s high school classic Mean Girls making headlines today; one in the world of theater, and the other pretty much only in the mystical, nostalgic dreamworld that exists in star Lindsay Lohan’s head.
First up: The New York Times is reporting that Fey and her husband, composer Jeff Richmond, are finally following through on their plans to give Mean Girls the musical treatment. The stage version of the film—produced by Broadway veteran Stuart Thompson, and directed by The Book Of Mormon’s Casey Nicholaw—will hit Washington D.C.’s National Theater this fall, with Legally Blond songwriter Nell Benjamin turning all your favorite ...

A national campaign has launched to curb binge drinking among teenagers and young adults.
Created by Brisbane agency Decoder in the style of gig posters, the ’Cringe the binge’ campaign tackles some of the outcomes of binge drinking, such as sexually transmitted diseases, adolescent brain development, alcohol–fuelled sexual violence, social embarrassment and mental health issues.
The posters will run in gig guides, on street media, t-shirts and online, initially to promote a Weekend of Action starting on 9 November.
Decoder CD Ken Roney: “The media budget was limited so the idea needed to work pretty hard and engage with young people at a level that wasn’t preachy. 13 to 24 year olds is quite a broad audience but the common dominator is that all young people are into music. So we thought band posters was a nice way to reach them when they were drinking and educate them about the serious downsides of binge drinking.

Scarlett Johansson will star in a revival of the Tennessee Williams drama "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" on Broadway this winter, according to reports citing an announcement made Thursday by the play's producer Stuart Thompson.
Johansson will play Maggie the Cat, the headstrong beauty portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1958 film adaptation of the play. She will star opposite Benjamin Walker, who plays Maggie's husband Brick. Walker, who starred in Broadway's "Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson," as well as the movie "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," reportedly beat out Jeremy Renner and Chris Pine for the role.
The New York Times reports that Johansson has been after the role of Maggie for "some time," suggesting she willed the oft-revived production into existence on the strength of her "box office star power."
Johansson last appeared on Broadway in another Thompson-produced show: the 2010 revival of Arthur Miller's "A View From The Bridge,...

One has to hand it to the Tony nominators: They didn't follow conventional wisdom nor did they particularly pay heed to commercial considerations.
Indeed, some of the biggest noms went to shows that are either long gone ("Ragtime," "Finian's Rainbow," "In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play," "Time Stands Still") or lagging at the boxoffice ("Fela!" "Memphis," "Next Fall," "Million Dollar Quartet").
The biggest surprises Tuesday were the omissions.
"The Addams Family," the most successful new musical of the season, was thoroughly dissed, failing to get noms for best musical, for its stars Nathan Lane or Bebe Neuwirth, or even for its production design. And though it did get one for original score, that's not exactly a coup in a season in which only one other musical, "Memphis," even had one. The category had to be embarrassingly filled out with the forgettable music from "Enron" and Branford Marsalis' incidental music for "Fences.

Last Wednesday, at precisely 10:04 p.m., G.W. waded into the scrum at the Royalton Hotel, inside its long lobby that swarmed with theater folk awash in bubbly. Broadway hoi polloi at the behest of Sir Elton John and his “husband,” David Furnish, had gathered here—at what historians consider the very first boutique hotel ever created—to celebrate the opening night of Next Fall, the compelling new play by Geoffrey Nauffts. “The play is superb,” declared our fabulous new acquaintance, the investment banker/fashion bessie Irene Walsh, who saw it on opening night, at the Helen Hayes Theater. Irene, the divine, was in the company of G.W.’s much loved and respected peer Roger Friedman. “George, the Vanity Fair Oscar party was really good this year,” he said. “I was one of the last to leave.” Good for you, Roger. This year G.W. didn’t make the trip.
