A super-species of triffid-style sentient flora terrorises humanity in a schlocky blockbuster
No doubt to Alan Titchmarsh’s great relief, the horticultural arm of the post-apocalypse flick is finally entering the growth phase, with the likes of Annihilation, The Last of Us and now this lightweight effort from Chinese director Lin Zhenzhao. The hubris here is that mankind has overcompensated for the desertification of the planet with cutting-edge research to promote plant growth, accidentally creating a super-species of sentient flora that has choked the Earth, and whose roving vines hunt down people to snack on.
Yang Hao (Mickey He) is a bunkered-in dad skulking in the ruins with daughter Yuanyuan (Zhang Mingcan), fending off the triffids with Uv light torches. His wife, one of the researchers responsible, has already become fertiliser, and he’s frantic when Yuanyuan is plucked from her bed by the creepers. But after rescuing her, they...

Strike: Troubled Blood really is an extraordinarily fine crime drama, where a range of exceptional talents come together to create something that is actually greater than the sum of its very formidable parts. That is something rare and to be cherished. And indeed watched, and I can unreservedly commend this four-parter as a highlight of your festive viewing. It starts brilliantly, but gets better, and there are some surprising and compelling star performances to come.
It’s the latest adaptation, by Tom Edge, of the Strike detective works of Jk Rowling, and probably the best. Tom Burke is once again in the title role of Cormoran Strike, the gruff but clever private investigator. Strike is an ex-soldier with a touch of Ptsd, a bit of a drink problem, and a troubled childhood. God Save The Queen. And Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth I.
Queen Elizabeth II was amused today by yet another celebration of her 70th year on the throne. This time, it was a Windsor castle event called “A Gallop Through History,” which the horse-loving Queen delighted in watching.
The theatrical arena event included 1300 performers and 500 horses, and consisted of four acts, each overseen by a different event host, including Top Gun’s Tom Cruise, British actor Damian Lewis, Bridgeton’s Adjoa Andoh and veteran UK performer Alan Titchmarsh.
The event was designed to take viewers on a “gallop through history,” a reenactment dating from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I through the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

British TV icon Sir David Attenborough has remembered his friend Prince Philip at the head of the BBC’s coverage of the Duke’s funeral.
The Duke Of Edinburgh was widely praised for his appreciation of conservation and the environment, something to which broadcaster and naturalist Attenborough has devoted his life.
Attenborough said of Prince Philip: “He was right there at the beginning at a time when conservation didn’t mean much to many people. Even in the 1950s and ’60s he saw it universally. The World Wildlife Fund owed a huge amount to his presence. When he spoke about conservation, he spoke about it with passion and knowledge.”
Describing the Prince’s character, Attenborough said: “He was an extraordinary combination of being formidable and friendly. You knew he was there. He had an amazing presence. It was an extraordinary balancing act between formality and informality.”

This week’s question: What’s the best new overlooked show of 2018 so far?

The best new overlooked show of 2018 so far is probably a show that I’m overlooking, so any answer I would give to you is probably wrong by virtue of my acknowledging it. Full of curatorial insights, this souped-up stroll around the Royal Academy exhibition caters fulsomely to its Alan Titchmarsh demographic
Here is another enjoyable stroll around a major exhibition, with the now-familiar mixture of curatorial insights and detailed context, put together with well-practised ease by director Phil Grabsky. The exhibition itself is perhaps rather obviously aimed at the Alan Titchmarsh generation, with its double-populist conflation of gardening and impressionism, but there’s a lot of interesting material here on the history of horticulture and its parallel with late-19th century developments in painting. Monet, and his water garden at Giverny, is somewhat inevitably the main focus; other artists don’t get much of a look-in, though there are short sections on Matisse, Max Liebermann and Joaquín Sorolla. Still, this is a thoroughly pleasant feast for the eyes.

You wouldn't expect the BBC to ever have to apologise for Alan Titchmarsh swearing on live TV, but it sort of happened this morning (June 23).
BBC Breakfast said sorry to TV viewers after Titchmarsh mentioned "bastard trenching". However, he wasn't speaking of his hate for trenching, it is a legitimate gardening term.
"I don't double dig every day - digging to two spades' depth. There's another name for it, and it sounds terrible, but it's called bastard trenching," he said. "By the end of it you realise that's a very fitting name for it."
Host Louise Minchin later said: "Thank you very much. And I just have to offer our apologies for the language used in the last couple of minutes. Apologies if people were offended."
"Oh no, no," Titchmarsh replied. "It's a term in a gardening book. I shan't repeat it but it's not offensive at all."
As it turned out,...

Doctor Who, Star Trek and more: what happened when sci-fi, horror & fantasy heroes have popped up on British daytime TV over the years…
Pre-YouTube, fandom was a hard-earned thing. It took research, dedication and enough patience to hover over the family video player’s ‘record’ button for an entire episode of TV-am in anticipation of six minutes with Sylvester McCoy. Six minutes in which the Seventh Doctor would be polled if he was a cat or dog person and then asked to taste a lemon roulade.
Scarcity bred desire in those days, so we took what we could get from our heroes of yore, even if that meant watching Hammer Horror legend Ingrid Pitt make a chocolate mousse, or the aforementioned McCoy attempt to answer fan questions above the hubbub of a Nottingham swimming pool complex. The collision of geek icons and UK daytime magazine shows was sometimes illuminating, sometimes excruciating,...

A wild discovery was made while celebrity gardener Alan Titchmarsh filmed a special for ITV at Buckingham Palace recently: Amanita muscaria, aka psychedelic mushrooms, in a garden. Not only did Alan identify the red and white fly agaric, but the palace also confirmed the surprising find. "There are several hundred fungi species in the palace garden, including a small number of naturally occurring fly agaric mushrooms," a spokesman for the palace said. Officials clarified that the mushrooms help trees take in nutrients and are not gathered for consumption in meals. Home to Queen Elizabeth II, Buckingham Palace regularly hosts royal events. It is located a few miles away from Kensington Palace, where Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Prince George live in an expansive apartment.

Alan Titchmarsh will spend a year in the Buckingham Palace Garden for a new ITV series.
The Queen's Garden will offer a "rare insight" into the palace gardens, as Titchmarsh explores the "living museum" where almost every plant has a royal story to tell.
The two-part documentary will use aerial photography, time-lapse, thermal imaging, and remotely-operated motion-sensitive cameras to give a comprehensive view of the monarch's garden.
Rare archive footage will also feature in the documentary to illustrate the Royal Family's attachment to the 39 acres of land.
The Queen's Garden was commissioned by Richard Klein, ITV's Director of Commissioning Factual and Katy Thorogood, Commissioning Editor Factual. The series is produced by Oxford Scientific Films.
Klein said: "There is something magical about a garden hidden behind high walls, and no more so than here, at Buckingham Palace.

Alan Titchmarsh has shrugged off claims he copied Paul O'Grady's talk show ideas. The 58-year-old comedian lashed out at the TV gardener recently stating that he and his team snatched 'The Paul O'Grady Show's structure, but Alan has since hit back, insisting the comments made him ''smile''. Alan told The Sun newspaper: ''I don't know where that came from but it made me smile. ''How a show is structured is entirely down to the producers, I just go on and do my job. Good luck to him. ''I don't bear him any animosity, but I don't know why he got so hot...

Alan Partridge the movie, now entitled ‘Alpha Papa’, has a teaser trailer. And it is a teaser so don’t expect to see much costume, yet what we do see is magnificent. Casual red shirt, biscuit varsity jacket, brown leather belt and pale blue denim jeans; the jeans of which perhaps we see too much.
It cannot be overstated how vital costume design is to the character of Alan Partridge. We know Alan so well by what he wears, we recognise him in society. He is that guy in a salmon pink Gabacci polo shirt and maroon Greenwoods cords. It is a very specific style that may look thrown together but takes an age to compile. His v-neck sweaters, zipper jackets, rollnecks, cardigans, snug jeans, pastel shirts; patterns that clash and colours that bleed. However most important is his blazer, usually in jade green, mustard or plum, and emblazoned with breast pocket crest.

However most important is his blazer, usually in jade green, mustard or plum, and emblazoned with breast pocket crest.

Craig Revel Horwood has blasted 'Strictly' hopeful Jerry Hall for having ''two left feet''. The judge - who is joined on the panel of the show by Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Darcey Bussell - claims the Texan model, who is partnered with Anton Du Beke, does not have a hope of winning the BBC show. Speaking on the 'Alan Titchmarsh Show', he said: ''Jerry has two right, or two left feet. She certainly won't be annihilating the world of dance.'' Jerry - who has previously confessed to being very lazy and does not enjoy exercise - recently said the only...

Alan Titchmarsh has criticised the "outrageous" nature of shows like The Only Way Is Essex. The Love Your Garden host said that the modern-style reality show is setting a negative example to the younger generation. "Because of the culture of Towie and Made in Chelsea and others, it's put across to the generation that is coming through now that anything outrageous can go on television. "And the object is to try to get on telly. And that is such a low ambition, I think, in itself. "I mean, I do a job that involves being on TV but it's the job that I do that is important. The fame and the television are secondary to it." The broadcaster also blamed social networks such as Twitter and Facebook for making youngsters not know how to interact with others properly. "The problem with a computer-driven generation (more)...

Prince William had a case of royal pre-wedding jitters the night before the Royal Wedding.
In an upcoming interview with Alan Titchmarsh in the documentary, "Elizabeth: Queen, Wife, Mother," for Britain's ITV1, William opens up about the wedding that had the world watching.
"I hadn't slept at all that night because obviously all the crowds were on The Mall," he said in the documentary, which airs in the U.K. on June 1. "They were singing and cheering all night long. He was wide-eyed and all smiles as he took Kate as his wife at Westminster Abbey last April. But, like royal watchers around the world, the Duke of Cambridge hardly slept a wink the night before his big day a year ago. The crowds gathered on The Mall, the London thoroughfare in front of Buckingham Palace, and the excitement of his impending wedding watched by the world made him restless, he tells interviewer Alan Titchmarsh for an upcoming ITV1 documentary on his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. "I hadn't slept at all that night because obviously all the crowds were on The Mall,...

Britain's Queen Elizabeth was entertained by Russian horse riders and Mexican dancers at Windsor Castle on Friday (11.05.12). The Diamond Jubilee pageant - celebrating the monarch's 60 year reign - took place over 90 minutes and took spectators on a trip 'around the world', with 500 horses and 800 performers taking part. At a tea party before the spectacular event - which was narrated by Angela Rippon and Alan Titchmarsh - the monarch tried on a pair of African bracelets made by tribes from Kenya, and Rose Kimanzi, who led the groups, revealed she was honoured to present the gift. She said: 'The gift was in honour of the queen. She became the queen in our country at...

British actress Minnie Driver was baffled by rumours which suggested Colin Farrell fathered her son, but she found the gossip "very funny".
The Good Will Hunting star gave birth to little Henry Story Driver in 2008 and she refused to come clean about the identity of the baby's dad.
Driver finally revealed last month that Henry's father is a TV writer, who is gradually stepping up his responsibilities as a new parent, and the 42-year-old actress admits she had a laugh about all the speculation.
She tells U.K. talk show host Alan Titchmarsh, "It wasn't really anyone's business in the first place. Everybody has their personal life and their story behind certain things and those were my choices.
"Rather a lot was made of it, which I was quite surprised by - I think everyone thought it would be someone fantastically famous, who the dad was. It was a bit of an anti-climax... I did disappoint people by it just being a normal bloke.
"Frankly I don't think people are that interested because he's not Colin Farrell, who I think a lot of people thought the dad was for a while, which was very funny to me."...

The pop icon has returned to a London hospital to continue his cancer treatment. Bee Gees star Robin Gibb, 62, was admitted to the London Clinic on Feb. 22 from a possible setback with his battle with cancer, but he's "Stayin Alive." Despite speculation, reps for Robin have dismissed his return to the hospital as something to be worried about, claiming it's just part of his rehabilitation, says the Daily Mail. The singer announced five months ago that he had liver and colon cancer, but it's been reported that docs have been very impressed with his progress. "We feared the worst. But doctors have said they are astounded at his response to treatment," a family insider told The Sun. Just twelve days prior, Robin made his first concert appearance at the London Palladium since he announced his diagnosis and sang along with military trio The Soldiers for charity. At the event, he...

Love Your Garden | Channel 4's Comedy Gala | The Santana Story | Paul Merton's Birth Of Hollywood | Isle Of Wight Festival 2011 | In Treatment
Love Your Garden
8pm, ITV1
It's easy to forget that before Ilkley's favourite son was a daytime chatshow colossus and racy novelist, Alan Titchmarsh was a humble, green-fingered horticulturist. In Love Your Garden, he's going back to his roots (ahem), going up against Monty Don on BBC2's Gardener's World, the show Titchmarsh himself used to front. There could yet be blood on the potting shed floor. This series is aiming itself not at coverage of the unobtainable country estate gardens, but something a little more achievable, celebrating the classic suburban garden. Ben Arnold
Channel 4's Comedy Gala
9pm, Channel 4
The return of the standup show in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital, something you may need to bear in mind as you resentfully endure the comedy stylings of Chris Moyles.
