Martin Scorsese is executive producing Argentine filmmaker Celina Murga’s latest drama, “The Freshly Cut Grass,” which has begun production.
Produced by “Argentina, 1985” producers Infinity Hill, the film stars Oscar nominee Marina de Tavira (“Roma”) who plays opposite Argentina’s Joaquin Furriel in what is described as “an exploration of love, desire, relationships and how society applies double standards for men and women.”
“I came to know Celina [Murga] through Rolex’s arts mentorship program, in which I’d agreed to participate for the 2008-2009 year,” said Scorsese. “I chose Celina among the candidates that were sent my way because I was greatly impressed by her two features ‘Ana and the Others’ and ‘A Week Alone,’” he added.
“I try to see as many pictures from around the world as I can, and I found both films unusual in subject matter, extremely subtle on a dramatic level, closely tied to...

Three of Argentina’s foremost auteurs – “Rojo’s” Benjamin Naishtat, “The Third Side of the River’s” Celina Murga, and “Two Shots Fired’s” Martin Rejtman – will present new movie projects at a 9th Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, the industry centerpiece at this year’s San Sebastian Film Festival.
They will be joined by up-and-coming directors such as “The Heiresses’” Marcelo Martinessi, “The Sharks’” Lucia Garibaldi and “The Future Perfect’s” Nele Wohlatz in a lineup that is long on strong and fairly established Argentine talent, has a clutch of new Colombian directors, and presses the urgent social-issue concerns that have come to characterize Latin American cinema.
Catapulted to fame when Martin Scorsese executive produced “The Third Side of the River,” Murga will present “The Smell of Freshly Cut Grass,” a high-concept gender drama starring “Paulina’s” Dolores Fonzi and co-written with partner and fellow film director Juan Villegas (“Las...

The fragmentary and confused existence of a 20-something Argentinean in a small coastal town is the focus of Tomas De Leone’s The Apprentice. The film does nothing new, but what it does, it does well: Movies about guys struggling to find their place in the world are a dime a dozen, but De Leone wisely has grounded this lean, thoughtful and often claustrophobic piece in unspoken, real emotional truths, giving his first film an evocative richness that leaves it looking like anything but apprentice work.

Normal School (Escuela Normal)
Directed by Celina Murga
Written by Celina Murga, Juan Villegas
2012, Argentina
Any time a narrative film or documentary, or any art form for that matter, attempts to portray a well-defined social entity, whether it be a community or an institution contained within walls, there can be moments of giddying excitements as uncanny parallels begin to surface, acting as mirrors by which society as a concept and a reality, or aspects of both, are seen anew, as if through a pair of virgin eyes. And even if there is never a eureka moment or instance of epiphanic revelation, it is at least always interesting to see how certain constants always prevail, certain modes and patterns of order, even in the midst of apparent chaos.
Celina Murga’s Normal School is true fly-on-the-wall filmmaking; sometimes fly-on –the-back, fly-on-the-shoulder or fly-all-over-the-place. Set during the final trimester of the year in 5th School Parana,...

The Berlin International Film Festival (German: Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin), one of the world’s leading film festivals and most reputable media events has just announced their complete lineup for the Forum program this year, and it looks incredible once again.
With 274,000 tickets sold and 487,000 admissions, it is considered the largest publicly-attended film festival worldwide. Up to 400 films are shown in several sections, representing a comprehensive array of the cinematic world. Around twenty films compete for the awards called the Golden and Silver Bears. Basically it is the place to be if you work in the business. The European Film Market (Efm), a film trade fair held simultaneously to the Berlinale, is a major industry meeting for the international film circuit once a year. The trade fair serves distributors, film buyers, producers, financiers and co-production agents. The festival has established a cosmopolitan character integrating art, glamour, commerce and a global media attention.

- Bombon, el perro (Bombon, Le Chien) Unlike the jarring Amores Perros (Alejandro González Iñárritu), Carlos Sorin’s Bombon is charming from the beginning to end. Again set in the arid Patagonia like his previous fiction film (the internationally acclaimed Minimal Stories), the story of this film revolves around a middle-age man who recently lost his job and who is offered a dog one day. Along the Patagonic route, he and Bombon will encounter a series of people which give a new direction to their life. Beautifully shot and with a faultless script, the film is a smart parable for hope at a time where many traditions are being lost. The acting from the part of Juan Villegas is exceptional. His facial expressions which are simple yet carrying a ton of subtleties is purely outstanding—hopefully we'll see more of him in the future. Star-Apoplexie One of
