Bob Dylan’s Rough and Rowdy Ways tour touched down Monday night at the Sanger Theatre in New Orleans. The venue is just a little under six miles from Lake Pontchartrain, which is probably why Dylan decided to break out the 1947 Hank Williams classic “On the Banks of the Old Pontchartrain” for the first time in his career. It was a tender rendition that he delivered in a remarkably clear voice.

“Drank someone else’s juice and left only the rind,” Katie Crutchfield boasts on her excellent new Waxahatchee album, Tigers Blood. She’s got a right to sound cocky. The long-time indie-rock underdog hero won herself a lot of new fans with Saint Cloud, her 2020 breakthrough hit, going for a laid-back style of heartland rock & roll twang. But Tigers Blood is even more rugged and confident, a master storyteller fully aware she’s on a hot streak. She sings about adult romance, struggling for sobriety, the day-to-day work of holding...

Timed to SXSW, Freestyle Digital Media has picked up the North American rights to the music-driven documentary Finding Lucinda.
Directed by Joel Fendelman, the road movie follows singer-songwriter Ismay, also known as Avery Hellman, on a quest to track down her hero and music icon Lucinda Williams and the people and places that shaped her early career. The doc, which premiered at the Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham, is set for a fall 2024 release by the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group.
Finding Lucinda features interviews with Charlie Sexton — who played with Williams when he was 11 years old and she was a little-known songwriter in Austin — Buddy Miller, Mary Gauthier, Josh Baca and Max Baca of Los Texmaniacs, Wolf Stephenson and John Grimaudo, Williams’ guitarist from her first record.
The film was written by Fendelman and Hellman, and produced by Liz McBee, Chuck Prophet and Jennifer Steinman Sternin.

Keith Richards takes on the Velvet Underground’s classic “I’m Waiting for the Man” for an upcoming tribute album dedicated to the music of Lou Reed.
Arriving a day before what would have been Reed’s 82nd birthday, Richards also shared a new video of studio footage from the recording of his rendition, which puts his trademark Rolling Stones riffage on the Velvet Underground & Nico track.
“To me, Lou stood out. The real deal!” Richards said in a statement. “Something important to American music and to All Music! I miss him and his dog.

“Alibi,” the opening track of Hurray for the Riff Raff’s The Past Is Still Alive, embraces the sense of invincibility that comes from facing down the very worst that life can throw at you. “You don’t have to die if you don’t wanna die/You can take it all back in the nick of time,” Alynda Segarra sings. The arrangement, featuring organ and bursts of tambourine, imbues the song with a sense of resilience and liberation—a relentlessly forward-moving spirit that recalls the music of Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and Waxahatchee.
The rest of The Past Is Still Alive is likewise informed by recollections of both a friend’s addiction and the passing of Segarra’s father, charting a determined, if sometimes uneasy, journey to make peace with uncomfortable truths. “Snake Plant” alternates between pleasantly mundane memories to direct addresses to a friend battling addiction (“I know...

One of last year’s most unexpected musical twists was the ascent of Zach Bryan, the rootsy singer-songwriter who sounds not unlike Bruce Springsteen or Jason Isbell — and went all the way to Number One on the Hot 100 with the ballad “I Remember Everything,” assisted by Kacey Musgraves. His self-titled fourth album was one of the best country/Americana releases of the year, but it’s only one of the unmissable 2023 releases in that category, from Jason Isbell’s own Weathervanes to Megan Maroney’s Lucky.

To mark what would have been David Bowie’s 77th birthday today, Wilco have shared their live rendition of the music icon’s “Space Oddity.”
The cover was recorded during the band’s visit to Mountain Stage, NPR Music, and West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s long-running live radio show and features as the opening track on an upcoming compilation highlighting performances from the series.
“As a gratefully, if not begrudgingly, Earth-bound band, it’s always an honor and a challenge to tackle any of David Bowie’s space-soaring arrangements,” Wilco said in a statement.

Monday, January 8th, would’ve been David Bowie’s 77th birthday. To mark the occasion, Wilco has shared their rendition of Bowie’s 1969 hit, “Space Oddity.”
The release hails from Wilco’s 2023 performance on Mountain Stage (a public radio show distributed by NPR Music), and will be included on an upcoming compilation announced today titled Live On Mountain Stage: Outlaws and Outliers, due on April 19th via Oh Boy Records.
Presenting a wonderfully Wilco-esque take on “Space Oddity” — itself named the 43rd best song of all time by Consequence in 2012 — the band settles into an acoustic arrangement, allowing Jeff Tweedy’s vocals to masterfully convey the tune’s enduring appeal for humanity.
Speaking about the performance in a statement, the band said: “As a gratefully, if not begrudgingly, Earth-bound band, it’s always an honor and a challenge to tackle any of David Bowie’s space-soaring arrangements. Striving to reach...

In an effort to defend trans rights in the United States, the U.K., and Canada, dozens of artists have recorded cover songs for a new compilation that will raise money for organizations in those countries. Joanna Sternberg recorded Caroline Rose’s “Everywhere I Go I Bring the Rain,” Rostam interpreted Lucinda Williams’ “Change the Locks,” Wednesday took on Elliott Smith’s “Christian Brothers,” and Model/Actriz perform the Ting Tings’ “That’s Not My Name” on the 44-track Fader + Friends Vol. 1 compilation available on Bandcamp for one month, starting today.

Fader has released Fader & Friends Vol. 1, a real star-studded covers compilation benefitting charities fighting for transgender rights.
There’s a whole lot in these 44 tracks, but here are just a few notable highlights: CoSign alums Wednesday recorded their rendition of Elliott Smith’s “Christian Brothers,” Rostam covered Lucinda Williams’ “Change the Locks,” Ratboys did The Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” and NNAMDÏ did The Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”
While most of the performers on the compilation — including Caroline Rose and Joanna Stenberg, who covered each other — are relative newcomers, the crop of songs constitute a vast timeline. There are covers of Big Thief, Perfume Genius, and Ethel Cain mixed together with songs by Stevie Wonder, Abba, Tina Turner, and Selena. There’s even an old English folk song (courtesy of Helena Deland).

Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 10, Rolling Stone is breaking down 16 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.

Tickets for Lucinda Williams’ tour are currently on sale after the singer released her new album Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart.
This comes three years since Williams suffered a stroke and lost the ability to use the left side of her body. Since then, Williams has been in rehab in an attempt to learn how to relearn how to walk and do other basic functions. Not only did she suffer from a serious medical condition, but in 2020 she also experienced her Nashville home being damaged by a tornado and went through the pandemic.
She announced the album back in April on her Instagram, sharing a sneak peek of her new single “New York Comeback” and officially launched it in June. It was a challenging process for the singer to create the album, as she had to invent a new songwriting procedure due to her being unable to play the guitar anymore.

"His records were too out there for American audiences at that time." Dogwoof has revealed the trailer a music history documentary film titled Angelheaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan & T. Everything is explained right there in the title - this film celebrates the life and work of glam rock pioneer Marc Bolan (who died in 1977 at the age of 29) while portraying a behind-the-scenes look at the tribute album of the same name produced by Hal Wilner. This first premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival last year, with a UK release set for September, though still no US debut confirmed yet. It seems like a comprehensive look at the life and music of Marc Bolan & T. In March, Big Thief stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to debut a song they had been playing live at shows: “Vampire Empire.” Now, on Wednesday, July 19th, the band has released the official studio version of the single. Listen to the track below.
“Vampire Empire” has been a hit among Big Thief fans since videos of the live version began circulating online, partly due to the tune’s lyrics, which speak to the complications of gender expression and queer identity in the context of a relationship. In a statement, vocalist Adrianne Lenker said: “For me, it’s about getting out of toxic internal patterns — leaving the empire of energy drains that obscure pure essence, learning about what healthy boundaries are, and finding the power to implement them for the possibility of giving and receiving (both inwardly and outwardly) unbroken and infinite Love.”
Accordingly, Lenker’s impassioned vocals convey a sense of searching.

It’s a wish-you-had-gills type of humid September day in Nashville, but Lucinda Williams is comfortably out of the soup, sitting at the kitchen table of Ray Kennedy’s Room & Board Studio telling tales about life on the road to a gang of touring lifers including Tommy Stinson and Jesse Malin. They’re rare, behind-the-curtain anecdotes, many of which she shares in her superb memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. But in person, hearing them delivered in Williams’ syrupy Southern drawl, they’re especially captivating.

On “New York Comeback,” the lead single from Songs from a Rock n Roll Heart, Lucinda Williams takes a well-deserved victory lap. Aided by backing vocals from none other than Bruce Springsteen, the Americana legend declares, “You wouldn’t want to miss my New York comeback,” atop anthemic, classic rock-style guitars and drums. We certainly wouldn’t.
Following a debilitating stroke in 2020, it seemed like there might not ever be another Lucinda Williams album. Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart, then, is a triumph against the odds. It’s also Williams’s most lyrically conceptual album to date, centered around resilience, revival, and renewal. Admittedly, such forces have always animated Williams’s music, but the songs on this album exist in a particularly vivid and unified universe, with most directly addressing the healing and transformative power of music at its most evocative.

“Music was my therapy for the many traumas I suffered as a child,” Lucinda Williams writes in her new memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. Those traumas include her mother’s mental illness, which created a volatile and often unpredictable environment for Williams and her two siblings, the eventual divorce of her parents, and her own battles with obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and self-esteem issues. Peppered with flirtatious encounters, doomed relationships with “poets on motorcycles” (including Ryan Adams), and a same-sex kiss on a dance floor, the...

Williams’ longtime road manager, Travis Stephens, also co-wrote six songs on the album.
Produced by Williams, Overby and Ray Kennedy, Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart features backing vocals from Bruce Springsteen, Margo Price, Angel Olsen, Tommy Stinson, Jeremy Ivey, and more.

Jeff Tweedy fans were treated to an extra serving of the artist on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday night. After the frontman sat down with the comedian for an interview, he and his buddies in Wilco hit the stage to perform their song “Tired of Taking It Out on You.”
Released as the second single from Wilco’s 20222 double album Cruel Country, “Tired of Taking It Out on You” reflects how we as a society treat each other. To that end, the group’s subdued performance accompanied Tweedy’s contemplative lyrics. Watch Wilco run through “Tired of Taking It Out on You” below.
In Tweedy’s chat with Meyers, however, he decided to take it out on Late Night bandleader Fred Armisen for owing his wife Sue Miller “a lot of money.” Armisen got his big break while opening for Wilco doing standup after he was hired to...

Wilco are heading back to Mexico this December for their Sky Blue Sky Festival. They’ve unveiled the full lineup for its 2023 iteration today, which includes Father John Misty, Sylvan Esso, and Lucinda Williams.
Wilco themselves, of course, are also featured on the lineup for Sky Blue Sky 2023, where they’ll play three shows throughout the four-day festival at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. Other notable names on the poster include Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, Built to Spill, Bartees Strange, and Cate Le Bon, as well as a solo set from Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy.
“Sky Blue Sky is something we feel lucky we get to do, and look forward to every time we put one together,” Tweedy writes in a press release. “We love sharing music with our friends, and we love getting together with everyone in the sun. It’s nice to step out from under the clouds every now and then.

There’s been a well-deserved resurgence in Warren Zevon’s music of late, 20 years after the songwriter’s death. Billy Joel raved about his work to the L.A. Times in a recent interview, Shooter Jennings devoted two full concerts to playing only Zevon songs, and, in February, Zevon himself was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023.

Texas country-punk band Vandoliers are standing in solidarity with drag performers and the LGBTQ+ community. On Thursday night, the group performed their set at the Shed in Maryville, Tennessee, with all six of its members wearing dresses in protest of the state’s newly enacted law on public drag performance.
“Fuck a drag bill,” they wrote in an Instagram post. “Gonna auction off the dresses we wore onstage in Tennessee tonight and donate the money to a couple of LGBTQ charities in this state.”

It’s a New York day in the life of Jesse Malin in the songwriter’s new video for “Downliner (Afterglow Version).” Malin makes his bed, brushes his teeth, goes grocery shopping, folds his rock & roll T-shirts, and even wraps a gift as the melancholy ballad plays behind him. Captivating stuff, right? While on the surface, the actions depicted in the clip, directed by Dave Stekert, seem trite, they work to center one’s daily existence in mindfulness. It’s all very Buddhist.

As U2 announced last week, they’ll be back in March with a brand new album that, really, is anything but. Songs of Surrender, playing off Bono’s recent memoir Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, finds the band remaking 40 songs from its back catalog — “a musical reimagining resulting in a completely new recording of each track, to include the arrangements and, in some cases, new lyrics.”
Not surprisingly, when it comes to a band that can still be polarizing after four decades, reactions rattled and hummed. On Rolling Stone’s social media feeds alone,...

There is something uneasy in the full moon — some eeriness, some mystery. A monthly reminder of our infinitesimal nature, the full moon inspired the poems of Hesiod, ancient Ojibwe lunar calendars, and still today, compels amateur astrologists to charge their Amazon-bought healing crystals beneath the new-age moonlight. Now it’s moved Matthew Houck, the artful folk-rocker known as Phosphorescent, to launch the Full Moon Project, a song series wherein each month, upon the full moon (the word “month,” accordingly, has its etymological roots in the Old English word “mōna,” or...

In her song “Metal Firecracker,” Lucinda Williams pleaded with her traveling companion not to reveal any of the secrets they talked about on their journey. But in 2023, Williams herself will share those untold stories in a new memoir titled after that lyric in the Car Wheels on a Gravel Road song: Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You.
Due April 25, 2023, via Random House Group’s Crown imprint, the autobiography traces Williams career, beginning with her tough, on-the-move childhood in the South where she accumulated the memories that would shape her songwriting to come.

The most common question at the annual AmericanaFest – a SXSW-style multi-venue music festival held in Nashville since 2000 – is “what is Americana?” “Diverse” seems to be the answer, after decades of favouritism shown towards white, male country singers.
At the event’s opening awards ceremony, which takes place at The Ryman, aka country music’s “mother church”, the sensational Canadian songwriter Allison Russell picks up a well-deserved Album of the Year for her illuminating solo debut Outside Child. Other gongs go to bluesy husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty, flamboyant gypsy jazz renegade Sierra Ferrell, and the Grammys-conquering LGBT+ icon Brandi Carlile. There’s still room for the old guard, too. Robert Plant, Chris Isaak and Lyle Lovett all make appearances, as does the great Lucinda Williams, while tribute is paid to late honky tonk singer-songwriter Luke Bell, who died last month aged 32.
Aside from the established names, AmericanaFest is also a hotbed of young talent.
