Exclusive: Tony Amendola (Stargate Sg-1) will topline Rough Magic: Exit Shakespeare, a new film from veteran TV director Andy Wolk (The Practice) and Silver Spring Road Films that has recently wrapped production.
The film is set in 1611 on a single night where Shakespeare (Amendola) is at a crisis point in his career. It’s about how writers age, their jealousies, resentments, and regrets, why they can’t revisit their old glories, and how their writing can overwhelm their life. Shakespeare has sacrificed much of his family life for his theatrical success and now—haunted with guilt about missing his young son’s death to the plague—he is forced to reflect on the price at which glory comes.
WGA and Humanitas Award winner Wolk directed from a script he wrote with Elliot Krieger, and produced alongside Matt Handy.

With backing from longtime Hollywood player Sandy Climan, Khaled Sabawi has quietly launched Open Screenplay as a free online platform for aspiring screenwriters.
Open Screenplay is aimed at helping writers create better stories through its story-writing process and tools. It has launched a contest with a $2,000 prize and has more than 100 screenplays in various stages on the site, including “My Alien Fiance,” “Blood Safari,” and “Butterfly Blades.”
“I genuinely believe technology should be used to improve industries that inhibit the emergence of new artists,” Sabawi said. “For so many aspiring writers like myself, there are no next steps once their screenplay is written, simply because they don’t know the right people. My goal in creating Open Screenplay is to change that so the world we see depicted in television and film can be as diverse and amazing as the world we live in.”

One of the country’s most influential film schools is having a tough week.
Members of the American Film Institute’s faculty and administration are voicing their support for AFI Dean Jan Schuette following a letter from the school’s faculty union Tuesday calling for Schuette’s resignation. The letter came two weeks after a union vote of “no confidence” in Schuette’s leadership that passed 35-8, with roughly half of the 87-person faculty not voting. At least 30 faculty members also signed a letter last October expressing deep concern about Schuette’s leadership and the direction of the conservatory.

Three faculty members from AFI’s editing discipline have resigned in recent weeks, including 21-year veteran Howard Smith, who told IndieWire in an email that his resignation was directly in response to changes instituted by Schuette.

Welcome to the ninth installment of our summer trip through "The Sopranos" season 1. When I revisited early seasons of "The Wire," as well as the whole run of "Deadwood," I did separate versions of each review for newcomers and veterans, but over time realized that the newcomers weren't commenting much, if at all, and that it therefore made sense to simply do one review. Any significant spoilers for episodes beyond the one being reviewed will be contained in a separate section at the end of the review; so long as you avoid that, and the comments, you should be fine. Thoughts on the ninth episode, “Boca," coming up just as soon as you lie like I play the French horn... "I didn't hurt nobody." -Tony In the grand scheme of "Sopranos" season 1, the most important part of "Boca" takes place on a Jersey golf course, where Uncle Junior and Tony...

Defiance, Season 1: Episode 8 – “Goodbye, Blue Sky”
Directed by Andy Wolk
Written by Anupam Nigam and Amanda Alpert Muscat
Airs Monday nights at 9 on SyFy
The IMDb editors recently released a list of eight new shows from 2013 that were surprising (mostly in a good way for surpassing expectations), on which Defiance was included. As of now, I don’t quite think it has earned a spot next to some shows like Hannibal, Banshee and Orphan Black, but it’s interesting taking Defiance into the context of some of its fellow freshmen. Vikings, which is also included on the list, shares a lot of similarities to Defiance, and I think the latter show could learn a thing or two from the former. Both Vikings and Defiance are, at some point or another, intensely concerned with the worlds they depict and attempt to make familiar those rituals that may seem strange to outsiders.

Defiance, Season 1: Episode 7 – “Brothers in Arms”
Directed by Andy Wolk
Written by Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer
Airs Monday nights at 9 of SyFy
This was the episode of Defiance I was waiting for. For a while now, this series has been hanging its hat on world-building, which hasn’t exactly been disengaging or uninteresting. But there have only been the occasional scenes in which I felt invested in the main characters. “Brothers in Arms” does a great job of using a common trope and subverting it in a way that draws out some legitimately interesting material from Nolan, and that development spreads to other parts and characters in the episode as well. The trope is the old friend of a character, Eddie (an old war buddy of Nolan’s), who comes in and turns out not be the person we think they are. Even sitcoms like Archer used this...

The Carrie Diaries, Season 1, Episode 13: “Kiss Yesterday Goodbye”
Written by Amy B. Harris
Directed by Andy Wolk
Aired Mondays at 8pm (Et) on the CW
Out With a Bang.
Tonight Carrie fills the last pages of her first diary, and damn does she fill them. After a handful of dry episodes, The Carrie Diaries finally gives itself permission to flush out its plot, four kyddshaw shakeups included. More importantly, someone finally acknowledges the shows tendency to dip its toes into the jail-bait pool when it comes to relationships, though disappointingly, with the least predatory example of the bunch.
“Kiss Yesterday Goodbye” uses its time wisely and commits to character-building revelations, forcing everyone to grow up and move on (more so the moving on in Tom’s case) and everyone other than Maggie is left the better for it. In fact, nothing about this episode is redeeming for Maggie; between...

"Mad Men" crew prove themselves that they work with the best. The AMC drama has just received three nominations at 2010 Directors Guild Awards. Three episodic directors, Jennifer Getzinger, Lesli Linka Glatter and Matthew Weiner, will compete against each other in Dramatic Series category.
The domination by "Mad Men" is almost being toppled by Fox's new series, "Glee", which nabs two under the category of Comedy Series. Similarly, HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" also has two candidates under Comedy, Jeff Schaffer and Larry Charles, who are both known as executive producers as well.
"Television directors play a crucial role in eliciting performance, advancing the story and establishing the look and feel in all genres of television," said DGA President Taylor Hackford. "The DGA Awards highlight the most outstanding examples of excellence in television each year, and our 41 nominees in eight categories have distinguished themselves with creative, compelling projects that entertained and informed a diverse worldwide audience.

CBS is getting in the Christmas spirit early with John Christmas, a telefilm starring Peter Falk and Valerie Bertinelli. The project hails from the creative team of CBS' highly rated 2001 telefilm A Town Without Christmas, which also starred Falk. In John Christmas, Falk will reprise his role from Town of the angel Max. The project centers on a fireman who suddenly leaves his native Chicago after saving many lives in a school inferno. Twenty years later, a local newspaper runs a photograph of the hero, dubbing him "John Christmas", and offers a reward for information on his whereabouts. Finding the fireman becomes a personal quest for a newspaper photographer who was among those saved in the fire. Also determined to track him down is a woman (Bertinelli) who thinks the anonymous hero is her brother who disappeared 20 years earlier. In their endeavors, all three get help from Max. Andy Wolk is set to direct the movie from a script by Michael J. Murray. Daniel H. Blatt is executive producing, with Michael Mahoney, Ken Gross and Murray serving as producers. Falk most recently reprised his role as Lt. Columbo in ABC's Columbo Likes the Nightlife. Bertinelli most recently co-starred on CBS' series Touched by an Angel.
NEW YORK -- TBS is developing the sci-fi thriller project Deprivers from Mandalay Pictures and Sony Pictures Television as a potential two-hour backdoor pilot. Deprivers, which will be published in novel form in the spring by Putnam, is set in the near future and follows an epidemic known as Deprivers Syndrome. Wolk is repped by CAA. Altman is repped by Ed Wintle of Curtis Brown.
