The 2022 Emmys ballot for Best Comedy Writing has 195 episode submissions, which means there will be seven nominees. As a reminder, last year’s winner was the pilot of “Hacks”, beating out the pilots of “The Flight Attendant” (Steve Yockey), “Girls5Eva” (Meredith Scardino) and “Ted Lasso”, along with the “PEN15” episode “Play” (Maya Erskine) and the “Ted Lasso”episode “Make Rebecca Great Again”.
Last year, an argument could be made that “Hacks” prevailed due to “Ted Lasso” having two episodes in the category and splitting its own votes. This scenario could repeat as the former only entered its season finale “The One, The Only” by the same three writing champs and “Ted Lasso” submitted both “Rainbow” (Bill Wrubel) and “No Weddings and a Funeral” (Jane Becker).

Don’t go around chasing monsters, because they might be real.
In Victor Mathieu’s directorial debut, The Monster Project is a very creative and scary film presented in the first-person point of view.
It follows a group of aspiring horror filmmakers, eager to raise their YouTube subscriber count, who post an online casting call for “real life” monsters to interview for their documentary. They find three participants and choose to film them sharing their haunted experiences in a mansion in the woods on the night of a lunar eclipse.
The film stars Toby Hemingway, Justin Bruening, Murielle Zuker, Jamal Quezaire, Yvonne Zima, Steven Flores and Shiori Ideta.
Lrm had an exclusive phone interview with Victor Mathieu for The Monster Project. Being a monster lover, he extensively talked about making these creatures come to life and the found footage style of filming in particular with night vision.

The crackling energy that Lethal Weapon scribe Shane Black brought to his two directorial efforts, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man 3, have us eagerly anticipating his next film, 1970s-set detective noir The Nice Guys. On top of Black’s involvement, we’re also excited by the fact that Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling have secured the lead roles of two unlikely partners who team up to solve unusual crimes. And today, our anticipation just grew again, with word that the talented Jack Kilmer has joined in a supporting role.
Kilmer, who landed on the map with his gripping performance in Gia Coppola’s Palo Alto, will play Chet, a young film projectionist who is a friend and confidante of Amelia (Margaret Qualley, HBO’s The Leftovers), the missing girl at the film’s center. Gravitas Ventures has dropped a trailer and a poster for its upcoming horror release, "The Last Light." The film takes place after an apocalypse where seven strangers find themselves trapped in a building, struggling to survive as they are hunted by a mysterious creature. Cast members for "The Last Light" include Edward Furlong ("Terminator 2: Judgement Day"), Jeff Fahey ("Planet Terror," "Machete"), Yvonne Zima ("ER") and Ed Quinn ("Eureka"). The superimposition of shots and sound at the beginning of "The Last Light" trailer suggests that the film is, perhaps, a meditation on the tenuous relationship between time and memory. It remains to be seen how far writer/director/producer Andrew Hyatt can dig into this issue before giving up to the more excessive "gore-like" conventions of the horror genre. "The Last Light" will be made available on iTunes and OnDemand starting June 3rd. Check out the poster and trailer below:...

It appears Lifetime has a new film franchise on its hands.
Four months after the premiere of the ludicrous "The Husband She Met Online," the network returned to remind audiences of the dangers of internet dating with the premiere of the equally-bananas "The Girl He Met Online" on Saturday (Feb. 8).

With her bipolar moods known to scare off her beaus, triggering an unparalleled rage once they dump her, she tries to be on better behavior with Andy. Unfortunately, her boss and mom amp up events that lead to the death of Andy's sister, putting Andy in danger himself. And the rest is history.

From there, she's gone on to have long stints on ER and the The Young and the Restless as well as roles in a number of indie films. Now, Zima is all grown up and looking to make a splash in this summer's Iron Man 3. Check out our interview below where we ask her about reuniting with Shane and try to gleam a little info about her role as 'Miss Elksridge'. If there’s one film in Renny Harlin‘s less-than-stellar career that would earn the highest praise, it would be The Long Kiss Goodnight. That praise essentially boils down to “it’s okay, I guess,” but the script by Shane Black undoubtedly lifts the whole thing to a level that makes it better than just about anything else Harlin has made.
That makes his desire to follow the movie up with a sequel somewhat understandable, and he actually seems pretty intent on making it. FilmSchoolRejects recently talked to the director, who said that his experience directing an episode of Burn Notice has led to the film landing a screenwriter, and that is series writer and producer Ben Watkins. He says that Watkins “turned out to be a giant fan of [The Long Kiss Goodnight],” which led to them deciding “to do it together.”

Talk of a sequel to The Long Kiss Goodnight has been openly floating around since at least 2007, and this Summer, Samuel L. Jackson again confirmed that he was up to the task. Jackson claiming to be in development is something that happens twice a day, but I recently spoke with director Renny Harlin for Reject Radio, and he confirmed that he wasn’t just twiddling his thumbs about it. He’s hired a writer to pen the script. “I just came back from Miami where I directed an episode of Burn Notice. I really like that series so I went to go and direct an episode, and the writer of the episode was Ben Watkins who is one of the producers of the show. I’d read quite a bit of his stuff, and he turned out to be a giant fan of [The Long Kiss Goodnight] so we started talking, and we decided we’re going to do it together...

All too often, low budget horror films feel as if they have been thrown together simply to make a quick buck or provide a source of bragging for the filmmakers. They more often than not lack any real heart, originality, or purpose. This makes it all the more refreshing when a low budget,...

Written by: Andrew Kole, Andrew Delaplaine and Scott Kasdin
Starring: Jeffrey Tambor, Jesse Plemons, Melinda McGraw, Yvonne Zima and William Morgan Sheppard
Described as an affectionate homage to the screwball comedy genre, Malcolm Mowbray’s “Meeting Spencer” is to screwball comedy what fat Elvis impersonators are to the King: a tragic reminder of the worst rather than an admirable tribute to the best.
Jeffrey Tambor plays Harris Chappell, a chastened stage director returned to Broadway following a Hollywood flop. The story centers on Chappell’s comeback play-in-the-making, the plans for which unravel over the course of an evening at Theatre Row hangout Frankie & Johnnie’s. Faced with ever-greater obstacles to success, Chappell and friends become increasingly desperate as they strive to keep their plans afloat.
Key to the success of “Meeting Spencer” is that as the desperation rises, so does the pitch of the comedy.

Aspiring independent filmmakers are the future of horror. “The Absent” is from Sage Bannick. The movie is about two parents who try to kill their son Oscar for insurance money. Oscar kills them. Many years later Vincent (his brother) is a teacher and Oscar is being let out of prison. Vincent is fixing to screw up his entire career and Oscar takes it upon himself to not allow that to happen.
The movie essentially starts off 20 plus years in the past to Oscar and his family. The parents literally want to murder Oscar “by accident” to collect insurance money off of him. Oscar meddling around finds this out when his parents are past due on a lot of their bills. What a pair of conniving parents! Oscar takes matters in to his own hands and gives them breakfast in bed rat poison style. They drop...

The students at a local high school are falling victim to their science teacher's evil twin brother who is trying to cover up his brother's affair with a missing student.
This slasher manages to juggle many plot threads including a slasher storyline, a tale of a stepfather abusing his young stepson, a missing person's procedural, a teen drama, and a play on duality with twins representing good & evil. Only problem, as soon as any of these story threads start to engage the viewer, once they start to become involving, they are abruptly over with. There's some interesting ideas, but with a brief running time of only 80 minutes, this is one of those rare films that should've been longer so that the material could've been better fleshed out and that the characterizations...

It's a very mixed bag this week for horror title releases. We're not sure how Dread-worthy the supernatural drama Hereafter (directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jay Mohr) is but have included it because of its afterlife aspects.
On the list you'll also find a couple of schlocky monster movies, one a double-feature of classic Gamera entries and the other from the Syfy channel featuring Sharktopus (a sea creature that is both a shark and an octopus) with an over-acting Eric Roberts. In addition Syfy is releasing its mockbuster Battle of Los Angeles to take advantage of the current Aliens-Invading-Los-Angeles craze.
Hereafter
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Starring Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jay Mohr, Cécile de France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren
George is a blue-collar American with a special connection to the afterlife dating from his childhood. French journalist Marie has a near-death experience that shakes her reality.

*Full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Sage Bannick.
Director: Sage Bannick.
Writers: Ari Bernstein, Damon Abdallah, and Sage Bannick.
The Absent is 4/10 high school drama, 4/10 slasher and 1/10 psychological thriller. Releasing on DVD March 15th through Passion River, The Absent is an eighty minute challenge upon the attention, with some tension coming from a teacher/student interplay. You see, Vincent is a science teacher with a crush on a young student, named Katie. Soon, characters are dying and motivations are not fully realized. An indie film with passion and ambition, The Absent just never becomes compelling.
Director Sage Bannick has stated that this film was shot in ten days: "on a shoestring budget." So right out of the starting block, this film is rushed. Most films require at least two weeks, excluding re-shoots. A film just cannot rise to any excellent quality, with such a short shooting schedule.

And baby makes three? That terrific character actress Ellen Greene of Little Shop of Horrors and Pushing Daisies fame joins The Young and the Restless for a five-episode stint starting January 7. Longtime fans of the soap will get a kick out of this: Greene will play Primrose DeVille, who is the niece of black market baby racketeer Rose DeVille, a notorious character played back in the '80s by the late, great Darlene Conley. Primrose will connect with Billy Abbott (Billy Miller) soon after he and wife Victoria (Amelia Heinle) get word from the doc that it'll be near impossible for them to conceive children. Y&R has Greene under gag order about plot details but, as you can see in the photo, Primrose does hand Billy a newborn. And Daisy (Yvonne Zima) gives birth to her baby this week and abandons it in a church. Are the bambinos one and the same?...
