The mystery surrounding Tucker Carlson’s ouster from the airwaves at Fox News — and his future plans in media — are coming into sharper focus.
On April 26, Carlson spoke by phone with one of Fox Corp.’s eight board members, who told the host that his recent benching was a condition of Fox News’ settlement with Dominion Voting Systems, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the conversation.
The unnamed board member told Carlson that the condition does not appear in any of the settlement’s documents, and instead was a verbal agreement. If Fox didn’t comply, the settlement was off, Carlson was told. Dominion had plenty of leverage given that the $787.5 million deal to settle Dominion’s defamation suit against the network wouldn’t officially close until late-May.
If Dominion opted to blow up the deal, Fox would return to square one on settlement talks or potentially subject the...

Sunny Hostin shared her View about two recent cable-news dismissals, saying that CNN firing Don Lemon this month and MSNBC firing Tiffany Cross in November sent media “backwards a bit.” Hostin commented on those shake-ups at the second annual Politics & Inclusion Dinner in Washington D.C., on Friday, April 28, when People asked her about diversity in the media. “I’d like to see improvement with more representation,” the co-host of The View said. “I thought, you know, we were in a place where we had people and voices like Don Lemon and like Tiffany Cross. And I think we’re seeing the media go backwards a bit when you’re looking at people that have been the voice of news and addressing — head-on in an unfiltered and unvarnished way — the real-life and lived experience of people of color.” MSNBC fired Cross, then the host of The Cross Connection, in November...

November 7 was a particularly busy Monday at “The View.” The long-running ABC talk series was prepping the show for the day before the midterm elections — a nail-biting event that ended up with the Democrats retaining control of the Senate and Republicans taking the House.
To bolster the show’s panel, led by moderator Whoopi Goldberg, Nicolle Wallace was joining as a guest to discuss a new series she hosts for Peacock surrounding mental health awareness. As a former member of “The View,” Wallace was no stranger to the Upper West Side Manhattan studio where the show is filmed, but the woman she brought as her plus-one surprised numerous staffers and talent. Wallace, who currently hosts MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House,” arrived that morning accompanied by Rashida Jones, her boss and the president of MSNBC.
Jones is known to have accompanied some MSNBC talent to other media appearances, even on rival networks.

The hosts of “The View” butted heads on Friday, as Sunny Hostin criticized her colleagues a bit for saying antisemitism is an issue on “both sides” of the aisle. For Hostin, that’s not a fair or accurate assessment.
The conversation led the day’s Hot Topics, with the women discussing the response to recent antisemitic comments from major public figures like Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, and Kyrie Irving. But, in discussing the issue, hosts Joy Behar and Sara Haines argued that both Republicans and Democrats have contributed to the rise in antisemitism, with Haines saying, “I think the danger here is this crosses the entire political spectrum, this crosses all walks of people.”
“By the way, it’s not just from the right, it’s from the left also,” Behar agreed. “But the difference is that when it comes from the left, the Democrats speak out against it.

Guy Fieri has become a culinary meme, winning over millions of fans with his love of greasy spoon diners and his “Flavortown” image. But when interviewed by Chris Wallace on the newsman’s HBO Max show, the discussion quickly turned to the most famous of Fieri’s haters.
In 2012, Fieri opened his first New York restaurant, Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar, in Times Square, prompting a review from New York Times food critic Pete Wells that was quickly exalted by both writers and Fieri detractors as a masterpiece.
“Is the entire restaurant a very expensive piece of conceptual art?” Wells wrote. “Is the shapeless, structureless baked alaska that droops and slumps and collapses while you eat it, or don’t eat it, supposed to be a representation in sugar and eggs of the experience of going insane? MSNBC host Tiffany Cross and her panel on “The Cross Connection” were in fits laughing Saturday over a scene from Donald Glover’s surrealist drama “Atlanta,” which depicts two white people nervously discussing reparations for slavery.
In the upcoming episode, the two characters fret over their futures. “It’s cleared the way for personal litigation. Now they can look you up and force you to pay the price,” one says.
Following the disbelief of the other, they continue, “Yeah, it’s scary. I’m looking at my family tree right now to make sure I’m in the clear. Everybody else is, too.” Both of them glance over at their Black coworkers, laughing with each other across the office. “Lucky them. Not a care in the world.”
After playing the clip, Cross opened the floor to one of her panelists, activist and author Tim Wise, who was joined by regular contributor Jason Johnson.

After Rachel Maddow signed a new multi-year deal with MSNBC and NBCUniversal, there were reports that she ultimately will scale back her schedule to as little as once-a-week. That would leave the network with the potential loss of the nightly show, with no obvious successor.
In an interview with Deadline after Maddow’s deal was signed, MSNBC president Rashida Jones was asked whether, with the new agreement, Maddow will continue to host her show five nights a week. “Her show will continue as she’s doing it now,” she said. “One of the things we are looking at is she is so interested and excited in doing things in so many different areas within NBCUniversal, so we are figuring out how to juggle all of that, but her show continues on.” As for the longer term, Jones suggests that details are still being worked out.

Rachel Maddow will stay at MSNBC, according to two people familiar with the matter, after negotiating a new pact that will keep her at the cable-news outlet beyond 2022.
Maddow, who is the linchpin of the network’s primetime lineup, had been considering her own independent content ventures, and had enlisted top executives at Endeavor to make her case to MSNBC and senior managers at NBCUniversal. MSNBC declined to make executives available to comment on the renewal.
Under terms of the new pact, described as “multi year,” Maddow will develop other projects in a new partnership with NBCUniversal. She has already established a track record for doing so. She has found success in other ventures, such as “Bag Man,” a seven-episode podcast series centered on the story of former U.S. Vice President Spiro Agnew. MSNBC in 2018 featured her documentary special, “Betrayal,” which focused on the darker side of the 1968 election...

Rachel Maddow is considering the possibility of exiting MSNBC when her contract ends next year, albeit negotiations on her future are continuing between her representatives and the network.
“Nothing has been decided. We are deep into it with NBCUniversal and Rachel has an excellent relationship with them,” said Mark Shapiro, the president of Endeavor Co., who is representing Maddow along with CEO Ari Emanuel.
A source confirmed a report in The Daily Beast, which first reported on the possibility that Maddow might exit the network, with the top reason being the ongoing demands of a five-night-a-week show.
Maddow is MSNBC’s No. 1 personality, and her show has been in the Top 5 of all programs on the news networks. In July, The Rachel Maddow Show averaged 2.29 million viewers, behind Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight, Hannity and The Five. But ratings across the cable news networks have fallen sharply since last year,...

MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart blamed the “twisties” for mistakenly trying to end his Saturday a show a few minutes before it was actually over.
Capehart, who was filling in for Tiffany Cross and her Saturday show “The Cross Connection,” had just finished an interview with actor-director Ruben Santiago-Hudson about Broadway’s planned return after the pandemic shutdown.
“That’s our show for today,” he said — before doubting himself while still on air. “No, that is not our show for today. Is that our show for today?”
“That is our show for today,” he confirmed seconds later, signing off that Cross would be back next week for the regular show and moving to a commercial break.
He then handed off “The Saturday Show” to MSNBC’s Alex Witt for football news.

During an MSNBC interview on Saturday, Regina King learned, live on the air, that she is perhaps being considered to direct an upcoming Superman film for Warner Bros. and DC.
It was Tiffany Cross, of The Cross Connection, that first made King aware of the rumor. “I’m curious, because this is a little bit of gossip. You’re rumored to be on the short list to direct Superman. You and Barry Jenkins, both of your names have been thrown out there,” the MSNBC host said. “Anything you want to tell us? Is there any news you can break this morning about those conversations?”
“Tiffany, that is news to me. You have broke the news to me,” laughed King. “A news break, live on MSNBC!
“Yeah, no, I have not heard that until just now,” she continued, appearing a bit gobsmacked.
At this point, any discussion of King’s involvement with Superman is purely speculative.

One hundred years ago this week, a white mob attacked the Greenwood neighborhood of segregated Tulsa, Ok, a thriving business district known as “Black Wall Street” where many of the city’s roughly 10,000 Black residents lived.
The dispute centered on a charge of sexual assault by a black teenager against a white elevator operator. Fearing a lynching, an armed cadre of Black men confronted an equally armed group of white men outside the jail where the teen was being held. Shot were fired, and the aftermath saw a two-day spree of murder, assault, arson and looting, one of the worst incidents of racial violence in American history. The charges against the teen were later dropped.
As the country marks the awful event’s centennial, many TV networks are airing programs about the massacre, its aftermath and its historical impact. Here’s a roundup of some of programming and podcasts tied...
