Billie Jean King at Bjk 75
The event titled “Bjk 75” served as a platform to raise funding for a permanent exhibition of King’s collection at the museum and the digitization of her archives to ensure future generations have the opportunity and access to learn from King’s life story.
“Ensuring that Billie Jean King and her collection remains a permanent fixture in our halls is an important statement in the history of women who have a significant impact on American history,” said Dr. Louise Mirrer, president and CEO of the New-York Historical Society. “While the museum is an incredible place to visit, we are conscious that not everyone has access. It's crazy to read a book like Yael Kohen's We Killed and know that people still make statements like "Women aren't funny." The newly released oral history of women in comedy over the last 50 years is a reminder that not only are women hilarious, but they are smart, persistent and unwilling to back down when faced with the sexism and adversity they've been dealt whether it's been in comedy clubs, writing rooms or late night TV shows.
Comedy is not just entertainment: It has the power to enlighten and educate, no matter how subtle it might be presented. What you'll get from We Killed is a sense of how progressive women have proven to be, from the pioneers like Phyllis Diller and Elaine May to the alternative comics of the '90s like Janeane Garofalo up through today's boundary-smashing Sarah Silverman, for whom no topic is untouchable.

Fade in. Against a black background, the name of the series is spelled out in lights: Smash.
Ok, hold on, before we begin can I just say one thing? Despite every lazy critic in the country writing that Smash is “Glee for adults” Smash is not Glee for adults. Glee is Glee for adults and there's no reason to insult adult Glee fans by saying otherwise. That said, comparisons of the two series are probably inevitable. Just, try to be nice about it, Ok?
The title card fades out and we fade in on a woman in a sparkly dress standing on a bare stage in front of a sparkly background. The music swells and she begins to sing “Over the Rainbow”. The first verse is lovely but as she heads into verse two a ringing cell phone interrupts her. Transition to an audition room where the director (a cameo...

Applauding with the Outfest audience at the Harmony Gold Theater last Wednesday night after a sneak peek of NBC's upcoming TV show Smash, I felt as if I'd just seen something new. Los Angeles Times TV critic Mary McNamara succinctly described Smash as Glee meets A Chorus Line.
Yes, it's that and Glee's predecessor Fame. But it's also a lively meditation on creativity, on transforming inspiration into action and something real. Perhaps most importantly, using theater as a framework, Smash explores the good, bad, and ugly of living lives totally focused on the possibility of fulfilling a big dream. Smash aptly premiers on Monday, Feb. 6, after NBC's hit show The Voice, as if answering the question: what happens to those contestant winners and runners-up after the reality show ends?
In the case of American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee, she landed in this Shakespearian-tinged, reality-based tale about the making of...

Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward launched Anyone But Me in 2008 under the umbrella of Strike.TV, the new media distribution company conceived in the Writers Guild of America picket lines. Since then, Strike.TV has found a new partner in MetaCafe and Miller and Ward’s original web series about the experiences of Vivian McMillan (played by Rachael Hip-Flores) - a postpubescent girl who likes girls living in a post-9/11 New York State and City world - has thrived. In three years, the show has uploaded 25 installments across three seasons (the last of which was partially supported by fans), which all together across all the show's distribution outlets have accumulated nearly 11 milion views. Not bad for an independent web drama! Now that Anyone But Me crossed is now a member of the eight figure viewcount club, I thought it might be a good time to dive a little deeper...

Plus gay arrests in Pakistan, play Ask a Celebrity with Kristin Davis, and hear why the Cleveland Brown's Scott Fujita is a Glbt activist.
Give clothes a second chance.
Above you can see a French ad for a fabric dye, where the ugly shirt you receive for Valentine's Day can be regifted to the same person who gave it to you by the application of Dylon Fabric Dye. That cancels out any goodwill to the French for the McDonald's ad. Greg Louganis reflects on living with HIV, Matthew Mitcham's triumph, and his return to Olympic diving - as a youth coach.
Annie Lennox has been named a United Nations AIDS Goodwill Ambasssador. Lennox has been active for a number of years fighting the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and young girls in Africa. In a tour that I predict would sellout if he did it stateside, John Waters says...

When Lily Tomlin calls, your mind says, “One ringy-dingy.” You can’t help it. And part of you really, really wants Ernestine to be on the other end of the line.
Fortunately, better judgment kicks in before you make the clichéd joke, even as you marvel at the fact that Tomlin’s characters are so ingrained in pop culture that the ringing of a phone brings to mind a whole slate of inspired comedy. The woman is, quite simply, an icon.
She also actively supports causes she believes in. On April 17, Tomlin and comedian Kate Clinton will perform “Back 2 Back” at the historic St. George Theater on Staten Island to benefit the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation for breast cancer and Community Health Action of Staten Island.
Tomlin talked to AfterEllen.com about the event and caught us up on some of her other projects. She also shared her thoughts...

Wow, December already? Good morning!
Courtenay Semel is really into celebrating the fact that she's a cover girl, throwing herself a party and everything. Curve is probably seeing its most sales ever, with the heiress herself likely having purchased several to give away to friends, family and prospective girlfriends.
If you're a Hollyoaks fan, you might be sad to hear that Zoë Lister will be gone as of January. The second lesbianish character to leave the show this season, Zoë claims she was "proud" of how her character's ex-flame Sarah died earlier this year, which was falling to her death with a sabotaged parachute. They're going to have to pull out all the stops in offing Zoë. Here's an idea: Lesbian bed death.
The New Yorker's awesome lesbian writer Ariel Levy has penned a piece on "Sports, sex, and the case of Caster Semenya." It's a great read, and further...

Comic Julie Goldman is blazing some new trails. The star of Logo's The Big Gay Sketch Show has recently relocated from New York to Los Angeles, started her own fashion blog, and has co-written a new lesbian romantic comedy, Nicest Thing, which she is currently developing for the big screen.
Goldman has been a fixture on the New York comedy scene and has already made memorable appearances in a slew of short and feature films, including Big Dreams in Little Hope, Out At the Wedding, Happy Birthday, and The D Word. When she's not busy being a television and movie star, Goldman is performing stand up comedy across the U.S., for which she has won the 2007 Mac award for Headlining Comedian in NYC and the New Now Next Award for Brink of Fame Comic in 2008.
We recently caught up with Goldman to talk about what she did last summer,...

In the annals of Tell Me Something I Don’t Already Know, the following headline could be Volume 1, Chapter 1: “Rachel Maddow, the New Sexy.” And all the lesbians in the room go, “Duh!”
But now, a new headline, cover photo and feature story in The Village Voice confirms what we all knew and held dear in our little gay hearts for the past year or more. Rachel Maddow is bringing sexy butch back. Not that sexy butch really went anywhere. But thanks to her visibility and popularity, a new, sexy brand of butch is enjoying a renaissance of sorts.
The article asserts that a more “fashion-conscious” butch has emerged that “differs markedly from her mullet-coiffed, man-hating predecessor.” Hmm, well, there may be a new, more high-polished butch (or futch, if you will – oh funny word mash-ups, what would we do without you?) around these days. But I certainly don...

While the recent passage of Proposition 8 in California was devastating to Lgbt people and our supporters everywhere, the issue reinvigorated an international debate about gay marriage.
It also drew attention to a number of famous couples, like Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, who wed in the small window of time that gay marriage was legal in California.
Even celebrity lesbian couples who didn’t get married, such as Melissa Etheridge and partner Tammy Lynn Michaels Etheridge were queried in the press for their views on Prop. 8 and what it means to the future of Lgbt rights. Whether appearing on news programs or talk shows, the couples interviewed were typically presented as every bit as committed and family-centric as any heterosexual married couple.
Most of us are on a first name basis with the partners of out celebrities like Ellen, Melissa, and Rosie O’Donnell (her partner is Kelli Carpenter-o'Donnell...
