Chris Hemsworth may have earned global recognition as an actor through his performance as Thor Odinson in projects from the MCU, but that isn’t the only franchise that has established a fairly respectable future for him in the industry.
While his other projects are one thing, the mastermind Avengers: Endgame helmers seem to have complete faith in one other of Hemsworth’s saga.

This one franchise is his superhit Extraction action saga, and Joe and Anthony Russo, who were the genius brains behind the 2019 masterpiece from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are already backing up that franchise.
But that’s not all, because Joe and Anthony Russo have even more on their mind about their next projects that would be focused on “original storytelling”!

The Matchbox line of tiny toy cars is to become a big feature film, and Extraction director Sam Hargrave has landed the plum job of making it.
We learned all the way back in 2022 that Mattel was looking to get a film project underway that would feature its long-running line of Matchbox toy cars. As part of the press release, it was trumpeted that ‘one Matchbox car is sold every second’ meaning that the brand possesses that all important ‘pre-awareness’ that is seen as crucial by the folks that give these types of films the thumbs-up.
Then 2022 happened and that other film based on a Mattel toy did rather well. You may have read a thing or two about the success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, but in the wake of that film’s huge success, Mattel announced that it had a number of projects on the horizon that would...

Mattel's next "big" movie may have found its director, as Deadline reports today that Sam Hargrave has closed a deal with Skydance and Mattel Films to helm the toy company's upcoming film "Matchbox." Hargrave is best known as the director of the Netflix film "Extraction" and its sequel; Netflix has said the first film in the franchise is one of the most-watched original movies it's ever released.
Mattel, the company that brought fans a billion-dollar "Barbie" movie, is clearly looking for another huge hit, and based on his track record at Netflix, Hargrave is able to get audiences seated. The first "Extraction" film dropped in 2020, starred Chris Hemsworth, and was reportedly watched by 99 million households during its first month on the streamer. While Netflix's data and viewership measurements are notoriously opaque, that's still a hell of a number, and it's one that could translate to success when it comes to "Matchbox.

After two “Extraction” films, both hits for Netflix, it’s clear that Sam Hargrave is one of the best action filmmakers working today. So, even though the idea of a “Matchbox” film seems silly, you have to give it the benefit of the doubt with Hargrave attached.
That’s right, according to Deadline, Sam Hargrave has been hired by Mattel and Skydance to direct a “Matchbox” film based on the collectible car brand.

Exclusive: After successfully launching the Extraction film franchise at Netflix, director Sam Hargrave has his eyes set on another potential franchise with a piece of IP that is revving its engines to get out the gate. Sources tell Deadline that Skydance and Mattel Films have closed a deal with Hargrave to direct a live-action movie based on Matchbox, Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line. David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper are penning the script.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films. The project will be shepherded by Aimee Rivera for Skydance and Elizabeth Bassin and Andrew Scannell for Mattel Films.
The iconic Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

Avengelyne may be flying to Warner Bros., with the studio in early talks to acquire the comic book package that hit earlier this month.
Don’t Worry Darling filmmaker Olivia Wilde is attached to direct the feature, with Barbie team Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara of LuckyChap producing. The banner has a first-look deal with Warners, which made the studio the first stop for the package, which has added screenwriter Tony McNamara to the mix. Longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is also producing.
Avengelyne launched in 1995 and centered on a fallen angel cast to Earth. The hero is entrusted to find and protect The One, a person who is the key to protecting humanity from demons and other monsters. Liefeld co-created the character with Cathy Christian and Tony Lobito. Liefeld, meanwhile, has Deadpool & Wolverine due out in July from Marvel Studios.

A third Extraction movie is currently in the works at Netflix!
The next installment in the movie franchise led by Chris Hemsworth was first announced at the streamer’s Tudum event in June 2023 and we’re finally getting a new update on the progress of the film.

“Yeah, we’re developing it at the moment, figuring out Chris‘s schedule. Sam Hargrave is back directing,” Joe told GamesRadar+. “It’s an interesting franchise because he’s a very emotionally wounded character, so there’s good storytelling there I think in respect to his backstory, and, you know, his relationship to violence is one that’s built around self-loathing and guilt. And so, it adds a lot of texture I think,...

Guy Ritchie has been maintaining a consistent success rate with his films ever since his debut with Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. However, his recent ventures like The Covenant and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare have not fared well at the box office. The situation seems to be similar for the Russo brothers post their hit Marvel run.
Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin was a big hit for Disney in 2019
Their non-Marvel projects like Cherry and The Gray Man have not resonated with audiences. The Russos and Ritchie are returning to Disney for the live-action adaptation of Hercules. With Ritchie’s previous success with the company and the contributions from the Russos, the film can break the terrible trend that has plagued the recent Disney live-action remakes.

After creating the heartbreaking yet truly magnificent exit of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe via Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers — Joe Russo and Anthony Russo — are all set to bring new action to the screens. And this time, this peak entertainment would not be through Rdj or the MCU, but rather, ostensibly through Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling.

As it turns out, the dynamic duo recently hinted at wanting to work with Evans and Gosling once again. The project they would be collaborating on is the sequel to the masterpiece from 2022, The Gray Man. But that’s not all because Evans isn’t the only Chris the mastermind filmmakers are looking forward to working with: They also want Chris Hemsworth to reprise his iconic role!

The Russo Brothers are one of Hollywood’s busiest duos in an industry that moves at the speed of light. With an alarming amount of projects heaped onto their respective plates, two stand out among the crowd for action fans: Extraction 3 and The Gray Man 2.
Speaking with GamesRadar+ at the Sands: International Film Festival in St. Andrews, Scotland, the Russos said The Gray Man 2 is actively developing. The 2022 original starred Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans as a skilled CIA operative (Gosling) and a psychotic former colleague (Evans) who triggered a global manhunt led by international assassins. Despite getting the shaft from critics, casual audiences loved watching two of Hollywood’s biggest stars square off against one another while explosions light their destructive path.

Chris Hemsworth’s action extravaganza Extraction 2 premiered on Netflix to much praise after showcasing such breathtaking sequences as the one-take prison riot scene. Audiences of the sequel were treated to a cameo appearance as Thor and Heimdall reunite with Idris Elba‘s mysterious “Man in a Suit” character sending Chris Hemsworth’s Rake on a seemingly impossible mission. While it’s easy to view Elba’s brief appearance as simply a catalyst to get the movie going, Elba has recently teased that he has “unfinished business” with Hemsworth and it may be resolved in a later movie.
Collider recently sat down with Elba, who is promoting his Sonic the Hedgehog spin-off, Knuckles, and Elba teases an expansion on his mystery Extraction character. The Luther star stated,
I know that we have some unfinished business from Extraction 2 . It hasn’t been made official yet, but I’m pretty sure it will be.

Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has made the first major Hollywood deal of 2024, pre-emptively purchasing the short story package Long Lost, which has the legendary Steven Spielberg attached to produce through his company Amblin Partners.
Long Lost is a 50 page short story written by Colin Bannon, who previously wrote and directed the 2009 comedy Love Conquers Paul. Bannon will be writing the screenplay adaptation of his story, which is said to be “in the vein of What Lies Beneath and Rosemary’s Baby“. The story centers on a recently married woman whose life is upended when her husband’s long-lost wife shockingly returns after she was believed to be dead, sparking fears that she’s hatching a sinister plan to reclaim what was once hers.

What a year it has been for the biggest streamer in the world.
While the first half of the year was largely known for its widely seen star-studded critical failures, the second half of the year brought many successes. From a hit franchise blockbuster to multiple awards season contenders, Netflix’s year in films was turned around completely and may help them garner some hardware as we march towards the Oscars in March.
While this list may not represent the most-watched films of the year, I believe these to be the best Netflix had to offer over the past 12 months.
So, without further ado, here are my Top 5 Netflix Original Movies of 2023.
Please note that this author has not seen Best International Feature contender, Society of the Snow, as it will not be on Netflix until 1/4/24. This list will also not consider the Wes Anderson/Roald Dahl short...

This post contains spoilers for "Extraction" and "Extraction 2."
Back when everyone was stuck inside during the global pandemic, we apparently did nothing but stream the heck out of Netflix's 2020 actioner "Extraction." Starring Chris Hemsworth as black market mercenary Tyler Rake, the film became the most-streamed original movie on the platform, making a sequel all but certain. And wouldn't you know, Netflix churned out a follow-up in no time, debuting "Extraction 2" in 2023 and doubling down on the unrelenting action sequences of the first movie. Whereas the first film delivered a 12-minute "one-take" sequence, the sequel featured a full 21 minutes of unbroken action as Rake battled his way out of a Georgian prison, taking down innumerable thugs and a few helicopters on his way.
Despite the fact that "Extraction 2" was an exhausting and dour return to the world of Tyler Rake, it clearly managed to rake in (sorry) the...

John Wick Chapter 4 pushed the envelope on stunt performance with the many flinging of bodies every which way. Extraction 2 boldly showed a visceral prison yard riot fight sequence in a one-shot. Tom Cruise did his thing and collaborated with many more brave souls participating in his death-defying stunts in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. This year saw many accomplishments in the popular genre of action and it seems as though the public are giving the hard-working stunt people behind the scenes more and more deserved recognition.
Bullet Train‘s David Leitch and Kelly McCormick are big names in the stunt community, and they join the likes of Chad Stahelski, Sam Hargrave and countless others in elevating the action genre to new heights. According to Variety, Leitch and his producing partner spouse, Kelly McCormick, are working with Universal Pictures Content Group for a new series centered on Hollywood stunt performers to be titled Action.

Hemsworth and Hargrave gave it all in Extraction 2. However, this Netflix action masterpiece is buried inside Netflix instead of being screened on the big canvas or even in IMAX theaters, and then moving into home TV (including Netflix). Moviegoers want Extraction 3 on the big screen, and Not on Netflix.
Extraction 2 should be made for theaters.
Ok. Let’s say it. In our opinion, Netflix is not the right platform for action masterpieces. Movie theaters are the right platform for that. It’s all about the viewer’s state of matter.

If you’ve seen “Extraction 2” (now streaming on Netflix), you know that it’s stuffed with even more edge-of-your-seat, bone-crunching, glass-breaking action. (It really is.) Chris Hemsworth returns as Tyler Rake, recovering from his seemingly mortal wounds in the first movie and taking on an even more death-defying mission. The stunts are bigger, the camerawork more dazzling (there a truly unbelievable prison break sequence captured as one unbroken take) and the choreography even more impressive.
In fact, we were so impressed with “Extraction 2” that we had director Sam Hargrave (returning from the first film) walk us through one of the most impressive bits of action – a fight sequence that takes place in and on top of a glass-enclosed gym in an European high-rise. (You can watch it here.)

Chris Hemsworth dangles from skyscrapers, dodges a fiery helicopter and survives several bludgeons to the head as former black ops mercenary Tyler Rake in Netflix’s blockbuster sequel “Extraction 2.” Now, onlookers can feel (literally!) the sweat that drips from Hemsworth’s chiseled face during those unrelenting, death-defying sequences through interactive billboards in New York City and Los Angeles.
It’s all part of Netflix’s unconventional marketing strategy for the film, one that’s designed to make viewers at home feel like they are part of the action. Directed by Sam Hargrave, “Extraction 2” picks up as Tyler Rake, back from the brink of death, embarks on a risky mission to save the imprisoned family of a ruthless gangster.
“The movie is adrenaline-packed,” says Netflix’s chief marketing officer Marian Lee. “We really think about testing new things. We have traditional billboards, too. But the sweaty billboards were great.

Filmmaker Sam Hargrave knew he would have to up the ante when it came to filming Netflix’s action sequel “Extraction 2.” The first film, which came out in 2020, contained a 12-minute sequence that included a car chase, gun battles, knife battles and plenty of explosions.
It was during early conversations with producer Joe Russo that the idea of a longer sequence came up. Says Hargrave, “Joe said, ‘It’d be cool if we opened the film with Tyler (Chris Hemsworth) extracting someone from a prison. Joe he wrote this into the script, ‘And thus follows the greatest oner in cinema history.’”
Hargrave devised a plan forward, and the result was a mind-blowing, 21-minute one-take sequence that sees black ops specialist Tyler Rake entering a prison to rescue the family of a violent gang member. As Tyler and the family members escape the prison and jump into armored vehicles, a chase ensues,...

Chris Hemsworth’s hit action franchise, ‘Extraction’, is getting a third adventure, reports ‘Variety’. Action star and director Sam Hargrave announced this at Netflix’s Tudum event on Saturday evening in Brazil.
The first two films centre on black ops mercenary Tyler Rake (Hemsworth). In the first film, Tyler takes on a mission to save an Indian crime lord’s son, but it pushes him to the brink of death.
‘Extraction 2’, notes ‘Variety’, picks up with Tyler recovering from the assignment, but then he decides to embark on another risky task in order to save the family of an infamous Georgian gangster.
Hargrave, whose directorial debut was the first ‘Extraction’, has lent his stunt expertise to the franchise’s second film as well. The stuntman-turned-director stunned fans with the sequel’s use of a singular shot for a 21-minute action sequence, adds ‘Variety’.

It appears that we’re right. The camera responsible for the crazy impressive 22-minute oner in Extraction 2, is the Red Digital Cinema Komodo. The implementation of the oner was possible due to dedicated camera rigs, for two hands, and one hand, as the Director of Photography, Greg Baldi, elaborated.

Extraction 2 was shot on various cameras: Arri Alexa Mini Lf, and Red Digital Cinema Komodo. However, when the teaser was released, we made an assumption that the oners which were packed with tons of action, were shot on the Komodo. Read the reasons why we thought that. Anyway, according to the Dp Greg Baldi, it appears we’re right. As stated by Baldi: “Our entire 22-minute action oner on Extraction 2 was all shot on Komodo. “Extraction 2” only just hit Netflix, but the streamer is already in development on a third film in the franchise. Star Chris Hemsworth broke the news on Saturday at Netflix’s Tudum live-fan event in Brazil, saying, “We’re already talking about ‘Extraction 3,'” at which point an “Extraction 3” logo lit up the screen.
“Extraction” was released in 2020 on the streamer, marking the feature directorial debut of Sam Hargrave, an acclaimed stunt coordinator who worked on the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. He returned to direct the sequel, which was released on Friday.
Joe Russo, co-director of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” wrote and produced “Extraction” and “Extraction 2.”
“Extraction 2” finds Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held. Indeed, the sequel trades the sweaty Bangladesh landscape of the first film for snowy Georgia.
