Prime Video debuted the film ‘The People We Hate At The Wedding’, a romantic comedy about two dysfunctional American siblings (Alice and Paul) who use the British wedding of their estranged half-sister as an opportunity to reconnect with each other and rediscover the love they once shared. Kristen Bell, the lead in the film, stars as the chaotic main character Alice. The fact that she is having an affair with her married employer, that she refuses to settle down, and that she is stuck in a job she hates only makes things worse. The film takes you on a thrilling ride with all of its unexpected turns.
Kristen Bell while talking about the film, says, “It is biting, it is whip smart, it is raunchy, but there is this familial joy about it. And I liked the idea of being involved with something where someone could escape and sit and watch this with their family.

The term “romantic comedy” these days covers a lot of light entertainments that only notionally meet the genre requirements: They pivot on relationships while just glancing at romance, and are packed with dialogue that’s zappily delivered but not all that funny. “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is one such nonromcom. Sporting a game cast and efficient sitcommy pacing, it looks and sounds the part just enough to keep you diverted — until you notice, as the credits roll to upbeat electropop, that you haven’t laughed once. Starring Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney as the blundering American relatives lowering the tone of a posh English wedding, this straight-to-streaming Amazon release attempts to bring a faintly risqué, expletive-laden millennial sensibility to Nancy Meyers terrain, and never quite finds the sweet spot.

The first scene Kristen Bell shot in Claire Scanlon’s new comedy, The People We Hate at the Wedding, is one that more than a few might describe as a bit of a nightmare.
“It was 7 a.m. and they threw me in the Thames River,” Bell explained with a smile on Wednesday night while standing on the red carpet in Westwood, host of the Prime Video premiere. “That river is neither warm nor clean but the minute we were done with that scene, we realized, oh, the rest of the movie is going to be a breeze.”
Call it a reward for a dirty job done early, the rest of Bell’s experience on the film played like a “dream come true.” That was thanks, in large part, to her co-stars. Based on the book by Grant Ginder and penned by writer-producer...

A star-studded cast in front of and behind the camera power “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” Prime Video’s answer to the blockbuster romantic comedy.
Adapted from Grant Ginder’s 2017 novel of the same name, this quirky comedic film stars Oscar and Emmy winner Allison Janney, Golden Globe nominee Kristen Bell and Tge winner Ben Platt, along with César winner Isaach De Bankolé and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” star Cynthia Addai-Robinson. It is written by Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneaux (“Bob’s Burgers”) and directed by Emmy winner Claire Scanlon (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”).
It’s an impressive crew that brings a great deal to the table, but what they don’t manage to bring to this comedy is much of a sense of fun.

‘The People We Hate at the Wedding’ Trailer: Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, and Allison Janney Cause Chaos
Who else wants to say “I do” to some dysfunctional family hilarity?
In Prime Video’s “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” Ben Platt and Kristen Bell star as outrageous siblings who travel with their optimistic mother (Allison Janney) to the British wedding of their estranged half-sister (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). What could be a way to reconnect proves to only ignite their differences as chaos quickly ensues…and lands the core trio behind bars.
“Eloise is our half-sister, which means that we can half-ass the relationship,” Platt says in the trailer, referencing the bride-to-be.
Written by “Bob’s Burgers” sibling scribes Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (“The Great North”) and Wendy Molyneux (“Deadpool 3”), “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is directed by Claire Scanlon, who previously helmed episodes of “The Office” and Netflix rom-com “Set It Up.”

"It's wonderful being here with my children, and all their friends." Amazon has revealed a fun trailer for a "raunchy comedy" called The People We Hate At The Wedding, arriving on Prime Video for streaming this November. Adapted from the novel of the same name. Family tensions ramp up among family members in the week leading up to their half-sister's wedding. Struggling American siblings Alice and Paul reluctantly agree to attend the wedding of their estranged, wealthy half-sister in the English countryside alongside their mother, Donna. This sounds crazy and wild and hilarious. Especially with this cast! The ensemble features Allison Janney, Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Karan Soni, Dustin Milligan, Tony Goldwyn, Isaach de Bankolé, with Jorma Taccone and Julian Ovenden. This definitely looks like a good film to dump on streaming, despite the funny cast. Did anyone laugh at anything in this trailer? ›››

Actress and filmmaker Livia de Paolis takes on the classic childhood story of Peter Pan in her adaptation of Laurie Fox’s novel “The Lost Girls,” a book that imagines what it would have been like for Peter to continue to visit Wendy Darling’s family as promised.
The result is a strange mix of the modern and the magical, and the attempt to bring this fantastical tale into the contemporary world doesn’t work as intended, as least as executed by de Paolis, who directed, wrote the screenplay, and stars in the film.
De Paolis, whose grandfather founded an Italian movie studio in 1938, plays Wendy Darling, the granddaughter of the original Wendy (Vanessa Redgrave), whom Peter first visited and taught to fly. Nana Wendy’s daughter Jane (Joely Richardson) is young Wendy’s mother, though she’s been long missing, and the young girl has been raised by her loving father Clayton.

Cameron Mackintosh, the London theatre owner and impresario, nixed the idea of having a host introduce artists performing at Tuesday’s one-night-only Old Friends tribute show honoring the legacy of musical theatre genius Stephen Sondheim, who died in November at age 91.
“All you need are Steve’s words and music, and our cast. They speak, or rather sing, for themselves,“ Mackintosh explained to Deadline before the star-studded event began at London’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
Worked like a treat. Thirty minutes saved, because Old Friends wasn’t lumbered with a host.
In any case, no one needed to introduce actress Julia McKenzie when she walked onto the stage, for it was she who, with Mackintosh producing, was part of an ensemble that super-spread Sondheim in the West End over four decades ago with a revue entitled Side By Side by Sondheim.
She’s one of the composer and lyricist’s foremost interpreters.

All eyes were on Judi Dench.
The legendary actress was seated stage right, performing one of Stephen Sondheim’s greatest hits. The sound of her voice, accompanied by a 25-piece orchestra led by Alfonso Casado Trigo, held a hushed audience in awe.
There was spontaneous applause. The great dame was led off stage. She reappeared moments later to perform the number again.
“Goosebumps,” said Cameron Mackintosh, echoing the thoughts of those lucky enough to be gathered in the stalls of London’s Stephen Sondheim Theatre for several hours Monday, for a long day and night of technical technical rehearsal for Tuesday night’s celebration of Sondheim, a giant of theatre, who died last November at age 91.

Since their inaugural ceremony in 1995, the Screen Actors Guild Awards has honored the collective work of TV series’ casts in addition to individual actors. The 2021 nominees for the Best Drama Ensemble award are “Better Call Saul,” “Bridgerton,” “The Crown,” “Lovecraft Country,” and “Ozark.” The winner will be revealed during the 27th SAG awards ceremony, airing April 4 on TBS and TNT.
Our racetrack odds currently have the ensemble of Netflix’s “The Crown” (16/5) favored to win the award for their work on the show’s fourth season. They are followed in order by the casts of “Ozark” (39/10), “Bridgerton” (9/2), “Lovecraft Country” (9/2), and “Better Call Saul” (9/2).
The group from “The Crown” are the only returning winners, having just triumphed last year. Before the cast was overhauled for its third season, the actors from the first two seasons were nominated in 2017 and 2018. The series could become the first streaming program (and the ninth overall) to win the award twice.

When the Netflix series “Bridgerton” debuted on Dec. 25, 22-year-old singer-songwriter Abigail Barlow and 19-year-old pianist and composer Emily Bear binge-watched the entire show in a matter of days, as did as did millions of other households, making it Netflix’s most-watched original series.
But, within the show — which is set in Regency Era London and follows the elaborate ruse-gone-wrong of Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) — Barlow and Bear found a wealth of musical inspiration.
Perhaps it was due to the show’s own soundtrack by the Vitamin String Quartet, featuring classical covers of Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish, or maybe it was the red-hot drama that unfolds during its eight episodes, but Barlow immediately felt that the concept belonged on a Broadway stage.

Bad news for fans of chivalry! Knightfall has been canceled by History after two seasons. This was all but a foregone conclusion as Knightfall’s second and final season concluded on May 13, 2019 and there have not been any updates on Knightfall season 3 since. Now History has made the cancellation official, according to Deadline.
The writing was on the wall for History’s Middle Ages epic even before the second season conclusion came and went without a renewal. Despite adding Mark Hamill (Star Wars) for its second season, Knightfall Season 2 featured a steep drop in ratings from its already ratings-challenged first season. According to the site TV Series Finale, Knightfall averaged a dismal 0.12 rating in the 18-49 demographic and attracted around only 650,000 viewers per episode total. That is a nearly 50% drop in viewers from the first season.

It seems like a long time coming, but this week sees a return for the Knights Templars in season 2 of Knightfall in the UK. At the end of season one having fallen from grace, Landry (Tom Cullen) was battered and bruised from an almighty battle with King Philip (Ed Stoppard) and left holding his newborn child.
Knightfall chronicles the mysterious but true accounts of the Knights Templar, the elite warriors of the Crusades. It delves into the great secrets protected by the Templars and tells the story of faith, loyalty and brotherhood that help sustain these warriors on the battlefield and the dark events that would forever sear the infamous date of Friday the 13th into the world’s psyche.
At eight episodes, Season 2 promises even more low points for Landry as he finds himself on a path to redemption. No longer a Knights Templar he finds himself at the...

History’s drama series “Knightfall” will return with its second season — which includes Mark Hamill — on Monday, March 25 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt, A + E Studios announced during the Television Critics Association press tour Sunday. But if you can’t wait that long to see Hamill trade in his lightsaber for a Medieval sword, you’re in luck, because History also dropped the Season 2 trailer.
The 2-minute, 16-second video teases Hamill’s debut as Talus, a battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran and initiate master who is tasked with preparing the next generation of men to proudly wear the red cross on their chests and become “God’s Executioners.” Based on the trailer, it seems Talus oscillates between giving out sage advice, and punching people.

A dysfunctional family faces the challenges of the festive season in this chaotic, eggnog-nostalgic comedy
As welcome as animal rights activists at a Boxing Day hunt, here comes the holiday season’s dysfunctional-family-Christmas-get-together movie. This one is a blandly watchable bit of festive-fluff Britcom from writer-director James Dearden following the familiar template of a clan gathering on Christmas Eve, this time in the English countryside. It’s tonally chaotic, mixing eggnog-nostalgic light comedy – is Dad man enough to give Gobbles the turkey the chop? Has the bloody frost got the brussels? – with some drama as flimsy as wrapping paper.
Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) is saddled with the cliched role of mum Miranda, who has recently inherited the family’s country pile. Her plan is to turn the crumbling house into a B&B and organic veg business with her countryside-hating husband Dan (Julian Ovenden). First, they have to make...

This is either the best or worst time to be releasing a new series set in the aftermath of The Crusades, a centuries-long campaign to claim the Holy Land as Christian territory. Regardless of its timing, the new History series “Knightfall” falls short of the careful examination that this monumental period of world history deserves. Ambitious in its scale, but hamstrung by its conventions, “Knightfall” often confuses violence and brutality for visceral authenticity. Using the Templar Knights as an entry point into a volatile period in France and the world at large, the result is a series that often focuses its energies on the least compelling areas of its tapestry.
As a sword and shield epic, “Knightfall” brings a kind of visual comfort that will likely endear it to pre-existing fans of “Game of Thrones,” “Lord of the Rings,” or even “Braveheart” (whose antagonist King Edward “Longshanks” I is name-dropped...

The Knightfall crew moved heaven and earth to bring the show to screen... and so did its star, Tom Cullen.
The show was picked up for 10 episodes straight-to-series in January 2016, signifying History's confidence in the Jeremy Renner-executive produced project, despite a massive set fire halfway through filming, and a Welsh actor who auditioned for the role of a warrior monk looking "like a mix between a gerbil and a Christmas pudding."
"Honestly, I looked like a turkey!" Cullen boldly confesses to Et after a night out promoting the show in Los Angeles. "I had just come out of Christmas, and I just looked like Christmas, do you know what I mean? I was the human equivalent of Christmas, so I had to do a lot of work in order to make myself look like a knight."
The actor was in the gym five hours a day for three months "to make myself look less [like a] turkey" before filming...

For years, it seemed the History Channel was lost in the weeds. Despite changing their name to History, their shows were more “mindless reality TV binge watch” and less “did I just accidentally learn something?” An intellectual wasteland, Ancient Aliens was the closest you could find to an edutainment series on the channel from 2010 to 2013. Then along came Vikings, and everything changed. Vikings premiered to 6 million viewers — and while not 100% historically accurate, it was head and shoulders above History’S other offerings at the time. The success opened the door to programming like the limited-series Barbarians Rising and the recent remake of Roots. But until now, Vikings has been the lone History historical series, adrift in a sea of Mountain Men and Swamp People. This solitude ends when Knightfall joins the line-up. A new series from Jeremy Renner’s (yes, Hawkeye) and Don Handfield’s production company The Combine and Midnight Radio, Knightfall will follow the Vikings model of blending history and drama, only this time during the fall of the Knights Templar. One of the most mysterious and powerful orders of the Middle Ages, the Knights Templar were a military group entrusted with the keeping of the Holy Grail and — according to legend — knew secrets about the Church that could bring it to its knees. But they were also an order of men, with all the messy politicking and “mean-girling” that entails. Knightfall promises to go deep into the inner circle of the Knights Templar’s clandestine world. Not just the battles in the Holy Land, but the battles on the home front. Not everyone loved the Templars, leading to clashes with both the King of France and Pope Boniface VIII. The latter of which would end in the disbanding the order on Friday the 13th, which is why the date is considered unlucky even now. Oh, look! The show hasn’t even started, and you’re already learning something. Production for Knightfall begins this summer in Croatia and the Czech Republic. Tom Cullen (Downton Abbey) was previously announced to star as Landry, a former warrior and current leader of the Knights Templar. But now the cast is fully in place and ready to return to the 12th century. From the press release: [Starring] Bobby Schofield (Black Sea, Our World War) as Parsifal, a young man of ordinary birth who will join the Knights Templar seeking revenge, but ultimately finds a higher purpose; Sabrina Bartlett (DaVinci’s Demons, Poldark) as Princess Isabella, Queen Joan and King Philip's daughter, her upcoming wedding stands to forge a powerful political alliance for France; Julian Ovenden (Downton Abbey, Person of Interest, The Colony) as De Nogaret, King Philip’s Machiavellian lawyer and right hand man; Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (The Bridge, The Absent One) as Adelina, as a child she was rescued in the Holy Land by the Templar Knights, but now in her early 20s, she lives on the streets of Paris as a thief; Padraic Delaney (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, The Tudors) as Gawain, once the greatest swordsman of the Templar Order whose role with them is at a crossroads; Simon Merrells (Spartacus, Dominion ) as Tancrede, a veteran sergeant fanatically devoted to the Templar Knight cause and Olivia Ross (War and Peace, Blowing Louder than the Wind , Father of My Children) as Queen Joan of Navarre, Queen of France and Queen Regnant of Navarre, a devoted mother, warrior, and a formidable diplomat and strategist. We’re entering a new era. One in which History retakes the torch. It was up to Comedy Central, of all places, to keep the learning fires alive with Drunk History and Another Period. But now the original is back, and hopefully better than ever.
