Three of this year’s Oscar nominated tunes were penned by Black songwriters: Celeste reaped a bid (along with Daniel Pemberton) for “Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago”; D’Mile, recent Grammy champ H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas collaborated on “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”; and supporting actor nominee Leslie Odom Jr. was cited with Nashville based singer/songwriter Sam Ashworth for “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami.”
The first Black tunesmith to contend for Best Original Song at the Oscars was Quincy Jones who was nominated in 1967 (alongside lyricist Bob Russell) for “The Eyes of Love” from the long-forgotten “Banning.” (Jones earned the first of his four score Oscar nominations that same year for “In Cold Blood.”) He and Russell reaped another bid the following year for the title tune from “For Love of Ivy.” His last nomination to date was in 1985 for...

To best appreciate the competitiveness and quality of the outstanding motion picture nominees for the 51st NAACP Image Awards, which takes place on Feb. 22, check the numbers.
All five of this year’s nominees — “Dolemite Is My Name” “Just Mercy” “Harriet” “Queen & Slim” and “Us” — scored well on Rotten Tomatoes. To wit, “Dolemite” nabbed a 97% “fresh” rating, “Us” landed at 93% and “Just Mercy” and “Queen and Slim” fielded an 84% and 83%, respectively. “Harriet,” starring Cynthia Erivo as the iconic Underground Railroad liberator, scored lowest with a still-respectable 73% rating.
Compare that to the dearth of choices as recently as seven years ago when “Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds,” which earned a 34% Rotten Tomatoes rating, was a contender in that same category. In other words, the Image Awards and the industry have come a long way.

Tonight’s 92nd Oscars had no shortage of stellar musical performances. Billie Eilish performed a poignant cover of the Beatles’ Yesterday during the In Memoriam segment, accompanied by her brother and producer Finneas O’Connell. Janelle Monáe opened the show in a high-energy original number with featured dancers and Billy Porter, and a shout-out to films that weren’t nominated this year, including Dolemite is My Name, Midsommar, Jordan Peele’s Us and Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers.
Elton John performed his best original song winner “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman. Other best song nominees included Randy Newman performing “I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away” from best animated feature winner Toy Story 4; Chrissy Metz with “I’m Standing With You” from Breakthrough; Cynthia Erivo with “Stand Up” from Harriet; and Idina Menzel with “Into the Unknown” from Frozen 2.

Updated with video Did anyone really think Hollywood wouldn’t choose a song called “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” as the year’s best?
The song by Elton John and Bernie Taupin from the film Rocketman won the Oscar for Best Original Song, beating out four songs from Toy Story 4, Breakthrough, Frozen 2 and Harriet.
“Being here with this guy, I don’t have words for it,” said Sir Elton’s longtime songwriting partner, lyricist Taupin. “It’s justification for 53 years of just hammering it out and doing what we do.”
Said John, “Thank you Bernie, who has been the constant thing in my life, when I was screwed up, and when I was normal…”
The win marked the first Oscar for Taupin, and the second for John (who won for The Lion King‘s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” with lyricist Tim Rice in 1994).

There’s nothing like being honored for your 52nd Oscar nomination on your 88th birthday and finding yourself serenaded by 350 of the town’s top composers and songwriters. But that was Saturday afternoon for composer John Williams at the Society of Composers & Lyricists’ annual Oscar music reception, which was attended by nearly all of the original-score and original-song nominees on the day before the Academy Awards ceremony.
Williams — nominated this year for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” — responded by pulling out the ceremonial baton he had just been awarded by Scl and conducting the last few bars of “Happy Birthday” being sung by the appreciative crowd.
The famous composer of “Jaws,” “Star Wars,” “E.T.” and many other classics said that receiving Oscar nominations “rather late in life, mean more all the time, the opposite of what you might think.” Williams’ 52 nominations are more than any other living individual...

To say Cynthia Erivo’s last few months have been nothing like she has ever experienced before would be an understatement.
Let’s just get to the obvious: the British actor and singer is not only a first-time Oscar nominee, but she’s up for two Academy Awards, one for best actress for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman in “Harriet” and the other for original song with Joshuah Brian Campbell for “Stand Up” from the film’s soundtrack.
“It just is all crazy,” Erivo says on this week’s episode of “The Big Ticket,” Variety and iHeart’s movie podcast. “It feels like things happened really fast, but I know that it took a long time to get to the point where it could go really fast, you know what I mean? It’s just surreal, really, to think about where I was a few years ago and where I am now.

Not many people get to thank the inspiration for their greatest work to date — certainly not when they’ve been dead for over 100 years — but Joshuah Brian Campbell got that chance and it meant the world to him.
Campbell and “Harriet” star Cynthia Erivo are nominated for Best Original Song for their work, “Stand Up,” which plays during the closing credits of the film. During TheWrap’s Screening Series at The Landmark in Los Angeles on Sunday, Campbell spoke about how when he got the call saying “Stand Up” would be used in the film, he was actually on his way see Tubman’s final home in Upstate New York.

Diane Warren is nominated for yet another Oscar: Best Original Song for “I’m Standing with You” from “Breakthrough.” That brings her career total to 11 nominations, but she still hasn’t won. But just getting those nominations has been a historic achievement: she has now made the academy’s lineup in five straight decades: the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. You might argue that her current nomination is actually for her work in 2019 and doesn’t count for the 2020s, but she nevertheless received the nomination in 2020, and it probably won’t be her last, so even if you don’t count this one, it’s only a matter of time. Click above for our detailed list of every single nomination, including who she was nominated against each time and who he lost to.

With his victory for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from “Rocketman,” Elton John set a record for the longest gap between Best Original Song wins at the Golden Globes at 25 years — and he could set the same record at the Oscars.
Like at the Globes, the pop-rock legend won his first and only Best Original Song Oscar for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King” (1994), which he shared with lyricist Tim Rice. The pair was also shortlisted for two other songs from the Disney classic, “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata.” John hadn’t been nominated since until now.
The Oscar record is held by Will Jennings, who won his statuettes 15 years apart for two hit power ballads, “Up Where We Belong” from “An Officer and a Gentleman” (1982) and “My Heart Will Go On” from “Titanic” (1997). Twenty-five other people have snagged multiple original song Oscars, but...

The Oscars’ failure to nominate any female directors has ignited a fierce backlash, as has the lack of diversity among top acting nominees.
A deeper dive into the categories reveals that the number of black nominees hit a three-year low. Only five black people were nominated for Oscars in 2020. That’s down from 15 in 2019, 13 in 2018 and 18 in 2017.
In 2019, the only black acting nominee was Cynthia Erivo, who was nominated for best actress for “Harriet,” as well as best song for “Stand Up (From Harriet).” Composer Joshuah Brian Campbell, who co-wrote “Stand Up,” is also black. The other black nominees include “Les Misérables” director Ladj Ly, up for best international feature, and the “Hair Love” team of Matthew A. Cherry and Karen Rupert Toliver, recognized in the best animated short category.

Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez are in the hunt for their third Best Original Song Oscar, for “Into the Unknown” from “Frozen II,” but there would be another noteworthy achievement on top of that potential victory. This marks the husband-and-wife songwriting duo’s third nomination, which means they could have a perfect 3-for-3 record in the category at the end of the season.
The Lopezes won on their first two bids for “Let It Go” from “Frozen” (2013) and “Remember Me” from “Coco” (2017) — wins that made Robert, then 39, the youngest and fastest (in 10 years) to Egot and the first double EGOTer. They share a 2-for-2 record at the moment with Giorgio Moroder, who prevailed for “Flashdance… What a Feeling” from “Flashdance” (1983) and “Take My Breath Away” from “Top Gun” (1986).
No one has been able to remain undefeated at three nominations or more. Should they walk away with the gold again, the Lopezes would join Tim Rice,...

Tragedy struck earlier this month when — for unknown reasons that will hopefully be explained by a hard-hitting true crime podcast at some point in the future — “Glasgow” from “Wild Rose” was denied a nomination for Best Original Song at the Oscars this year. In a season full of terrible snubs that made all too much sense, this one was truly baffling. Co-written by Caitlyn Smith, Kate York, and Academy Award-winning actress Mary Steenburgen, and sung to soul-lifting perfection by Jessie Buckley, this gorgeous country anthem must not have fit into the songwriting branch’s increasingly narrow idea of what an Oscar-worthy song should sound like.
And yet, in a decision that historians of the future will describe as “perverse,” the Academy has decided not to scrap the entire category out of shame. Indeed, there will still be a Best Original Song trophy handed out at the Oscars this year, and...

Cynthia Erivo’s journey to Egot goes back to her performance as Celie in the most recent Broadway revival of “The Color Purple.” After winning the Tony for Best Actress (Musical) in 2016, she went on to take home the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album as a principal soloist on the cast recording and an Emmy in the now retired category of Best On-Camera Musical Performance in a Daytime Program for when the cast performed on “The Today Show.” This year, she received two Oscar nominations for Kasi Lemmons’ biographical film, “Harriet” in two different categories: Best Actress and Best Song for co-writing “Stand Up” with Joshuah Brian Campbell. While Erivo’s likely not going to take down the current Best Actress frontrunner, Renee Zellweger (“Judy”), could her narrative of being a double nominee help complete her Egot in Best Song?

Will Diane Warren finally win an Oscar? She’s nominated for Best Original Song for “I’m Standing with You” from “Breakthrough” (watch the music video above). This is her 11th nomination, but she has yet to win. In fact, her latest nomination means she has contended for songwriting in five straight decades: the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. Granted, her current nomination is for her work in 2019, but this nomination came in the 2020s, and it probably won’t be her last, so even if you don’t count this one, it’s only a matter of time. A Grammy, Tony and Drama Desk Award winner who first entered into the world of film in 2018, Cynthia Erivo has quickly established herself as a force to be reckoned with in this arena. The star of Harriet, Kasi Lemmons’ drama on slave-turned-abolitionist Harriet Tubman, Erivo earned two Oscar nominations today, for Best Actress and Best Original Song.
“It means the world. It’s an achievement that I think most actors and actresses dream of in their lifetime, and I can’t believe that it’s happening today. With Oscar viewership still hovering at record lows, diversity among its 2020 nominees might have provided the Academy Awards celebration with a much-needed ratings jolt. Inclusion sells, and a 2015 Nielsen report found that the more diverse the major-category nominees, the larger the audience.
In the past, there was less the Academy could do to influence that outcome; no matter how much it diversifies its membership, they can’t vote on movies or performances that don’t exist. And despite all the chatter on the need to be more diverse and inclusive, and after a banner 2019 that seemed to signal a much-needed shift, this year’s nominees indicate that change remains inconsistent and slow to arrive. It’s very likely that #OscarsSoWhite will start trending once again.

Cynthia Erivo leaped onto the big screen in 2018 with roles in “Widows” and “Bad Times at the El Royale,” but it was her star turn in 2019’s “Harriet” that earned the Broadway star two Oscar nominations, bringing her one step closer to an Egot.
Erivo initially received acclaim for playing Celie in the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple,” which earned her the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. On Monday, she received nominations for Best Actress for her portrayal of Harriet Tubman, as well as for Best Original Song for “Stand Up” from the film. Erivo performed the song and helped write the music and lyrics with Joshuah Brian Campbell.
“To receive two Oscar nominations for a film paying tribute to Harriet Tubman, a person whose heart and spirit are the embodiment of courage, makes this morning’s news beyond anything I could have ever imagined,” Erivo said in a statement.

“To receive two Oscar nominations for a film paying tribute to Harriet Tubman, a person whose heart and spirit are the embodiment of courage, makes this morning’s news beyond anything I could have ever imagined,” Erivo said in a statement.

Beyonce has 23 Grammys (and four more nominations there this year), but she won’t be coming for Oscar next. She co-wrote the original song “Spirit” for the live-action version of “The Lion King.” It would’ve been a moment of redemption after she was disqualified for her songwriting contribution to “Dreamgirls” 13 years ago. That film was nominated for eight Oscars overall, including Best Original Song for three new tunes that were added to the score including “Listen,...

Those include Awkwafina in “The Farewell” (best actress winner at the Golden Globes and nominee at the Critics’ Choice Awards), Jennifer Lopez in “Hustlers”, Eddie Murphy in “Dolemite Is My Name” (best actor nominee at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards...
