Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are one step away from achieving Egot status, needing only an Emmy to complete the prestigious quartet of entertainment honors. The duo has submitted “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” from Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” for outstanding music and lyrics at this year’s Emmys. If they are nominated and win at the September ceremony, Pasek and Paul will become the 20th and 21st Egot recipients, joining the ranks of legends Richard Rodgers, Marvin Hamlisch and Elton John.
The song, co-written with celebrated composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, is performed by Steve Martin in the show’s eighth episode, “Sitzprobe,” helmed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. It will be the only original song the series submits this year, chosen over others such as “Look for the Light,” performed by Meryl Streep and Ashley Park, and two versions...

“It was a song that called out for as much writing and as many words as possible,” reveals Marc Shaiman of the epic tongue twister tune “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” This patter song at the heart of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 proved so complex that the initial songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul felt compelled to recruit another writing duo, Shaiman and Scott Wittman, to help with the intricate rhymes. “It really was one of those more-is-more kind of songs,” admits Paul, “and so we all had a blast.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
According to Pasek, the incredible “ambition” of this season spurred him and Paul to reach out to another writing team. “It felt like to us, what an amazing opportunity to get to work with people that we love and bring in a couple of other voices to help shape a score,...

In season three of Only Murders in the Building, Broadway director Oliver Putnam, played by Martin Short, lands on the idea of turning his murder mystery play Death Rattle into a musical after the shocking death of his leading man.
The musical, in which a detective investigates the murder of a woman in a lighthouse that was only witnessed by her infant triplets, is meant to salvage the show, and his career. But it also acts as a motif for the rest of season, wherein the Broadway numbers performed by cast further the plot of the actual murder mystery being solved by Short, Selena Gomez and Steve Martin, the trio at the center of the series.
And so to make the already over-the-top musical feel as real as possible, the Only Murders in the Building writing team called on the Tony- and Oscar-winning songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul,...

Is there going be a musical episode of “Only Murders in the Building” in Season 3?!
While it hasn’t been officially confirmed that Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez will be singing and dancing at some point, I recently got a tease from musical impresarios Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. “We’ve worked on the next season of ‘Only Murders in the Building,’” Shaiman said. “We’re not allowed to say anything more than that, but you could probably do that math.”
The third season also includes appearances by Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd and Jesse Williams.
Shaiman and Wittman’s latest Broadway extravaganza, a musical adaptation of “Some Like It Hot,” earned the most Tony nominations this year with 13 nods, including best musical and J. Harrison Ghee for leading actor in a musical. The show, with music by Shaiman, lyrics by Shaiman and Wittman and a book by Matthew López and Amber Ruffin,...

“Our characters are wrestling with very contemporary situations,” explains Scott Wittman of the musical “Some Like it Hot.” He and Marc Shaiman are the Tony-winning songwriting duo behind the score. The pair was adamant that their tunes be used to expand and reinvent the characters for this stage adaptation, rather than simply copy what viewers would expect from the classic movie. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
When it comes to the overall musical style of the show, Shaiman exclaims ”I just took an MGM view of it all.” He explains that the classic MGM films from the 1920s, 30s and 40s all contain a similar sound full of big band and strings. ”I just wanted to make use of all the great sounds of really, almost 3 decades worth of swing and elegant, romantic, joyous music,” describes the composer. The long-in-the-works stage adaptation of NBC’s cult favorite musical drama series “Smash” is finally heading to Broadway.
Producers Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron, and Steven Spielberg announced Wednesday that “Smash” will bow on the Great White Way in the 2024-25 season, per TVLine.
The producers have assembled a talented team to mount the production. Five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman (“The Producers”) will direct. Bob Martin (“The Prom”) and Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys”) are writing the book. Composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (“Hairspray”), who wrote over two dozen songs for the TV show’s in-universe musicals “Bombshell” and “Hit List,” will return for the stage adaptation. Choreographer Joshua Bergasse, who won an Emmy for his choreography on the TV show, will also return for the stage version.
According to the producers, the plot will once again follow the “harrowing and hilarious” ordeal of mounting “Bombshell,” but will “depart liberally” from the series.

Finally, one of television’s most notorious series will achieve its final form, arguably fulfilling its destiny from the beginning: Smash is coming to Broadway in the 2024-2025 season.
The 2012-2013 NBC musical drama, which starred Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty as dueling actresses competing for the role of Marilyn Monroe in a high-profile stage production, was an object of fascination for viewers, thanks to its sometimes mesmerizing, sometimes bewildering blend of high-octane soap opera and Broadway-ready musical numbers, written by Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Unfortunately, there weren’t enough of those fascinated viewers to sustain such an incredibly expensive show (and behind-the-scenes drama involving original creator Theresa Rebeck being removed from showrunning duties didn’t help matters), leading to its cancelation after Season 2. Since its original airing, though, the question of adapting said Broadway-ready musical numbers as an actual stage show has arisen, with the show-within-the-show,...

Like Thanos, it was inevitable – ever since MCU), it was clear that fans would clamour for an actual stage performance of the all-singing all-dancing Captain America extravaganza. And now, it’s happening – as long as you can make your way to California.
Disney has confirmed that this summer will bring performances of an actual Rogers: The Musical to the Hyperion Stage at California Adventure Park in the original Disneyland Resort (that’s the Anaheim one). It’s described as a “limited-time engagement”, and will be a one-act show – which does imply it will feature additional musical numbers beyond just ‘Save The City’, if not reach full-on three-hour Broadway musical status.
There are no details yet for the show – how long it’ll be, when exactly it’ll open, how many months it’s due to run for, or whether Shaiman and Wittman have been recruited to pen the (likely) additional numbers.

If you live in the center of the “Marvel fan” and “musical theater lover” Venn diagram, then today’s news is going to be a real treat. Disney has announced that it’s bringing the once-only-fictional Rogers: The Musical to life as a “short one-act musical.” Performances will begin this summer at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim.
The announcement came via a short video posted to the Disney Parks Twitter account, which features a woman in Peggy Carter’s signature outfit walking into Disney’s Hyperion Theater with a playbill for the show in hand.
Originally introduced as a meta gag of sorts in Disney’s Hawkeye miniseries — which follows Jeremy Renner’s titular character after the events of Avengers: Endgame — the musical is supposed to be an in-universe Broadway hit, featuring the superhero team singing, dancing, and flying around the stage as they protect New York City from alien invasion.

It’s been called “a super powered sensation.” Critics have said that it’s “an all-American musical for an all-American hero.” And Dancer magazine exclaimed, “Every Avenger brought to life!” It’s the popular, audience and critically-acclaimed stage show Rogers: The Musical. And it’s not real…until now. The Disney+ series, Hawkeye, about the lesser profiled member from The Avengers movies, featured a tongue-in-cheek joke about a broadway musical in the superhero universe that depicts the events in New York in 2012 when the Avengers first assembled.
Deadline now has the details on Rogers: The Musical making its way on stage for real as it is set to be performed this summer at the Hyperion Stage inside California Adventure Park at Disneyland resort. Rogers: The Musical was first shown in the premiere episode of Hawkeye as joke where Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner, would take his kids to see the show in New York.

Of all our craft Best of 2022 lists, film scores was the one where there was the widest list of nominees and least amount of consensus about a top 10. There was just such a wide variety of great work done that delineating what was best wasn’t always clear.
What was clear from our picks, however, was that a number of the best composers working today — from Michael Giacchino to Michael Abels — were on their game in 2022; it was also apparent that this was a year of innovative uses of film music that played a subtle and almost sound design-like role. And by no surprise, so much of that best work came from director-composer collaborations that started early and stretched over many months, sometimes over year, and evolved to find the best way for the music sit in the film.
Chris O’Falt, Steve Greene, David Ehrlich, and Erik Adams also contributed to this article.

On a rainy Sunday afternoon, “Some Like It Hot” opened on Broadway and furnished the Shubert Theater with its most glittering audience in recent memory.
Patti LuPone, Bette Midler, Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker, Martin Short, Andrea Mitchell, Debra Messing, Uma Thurman, John Stamos, Neil Patrick Harris, Amy Sedaris and many more all filed through Shubert Alley to attend the exciting new stage adaptation of the classic 1959 film comedy.

Mariah Carey will join the producing team of Some Like it Hot, the new Broadway musical announced Monday.
This is the first Broadway credit for Carey, who joins the production as a co-producer. Carey said she was drawn to the musical, an adaptation of the 1959 film starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, because of her love for the actress.
“I first became familiar with this story through the timeless film starring Marilyn Monroe. She’s been an important touchstone throughout my life, so much so that I acquired her treasured baby grand white piano at an auction,” Carey said. “When Neil Meron shared this new take on the beloved film, I knew I had to be a part of it. To see how this show continues to expand on the film’s legacy — pushing boundaries, promoting inclusion, celebrating diversity — I’m...

When acclaimed composer Marc Shaiman read that Billy Eichner was making the film “Bros” he thought to himself: “A gay rom-com? I’m the king of rom-com, and I’m gayer than a goose! Who else are you going to hire for this?” Shaiman has created music for classics in the genre, such as “Sleepless in Seattle” and “When Harry Met Sally.” So was a natural fit for the first gay themed romantic comedy from a major studio. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Not only did Shaiman craft a gentle but assured score for the movie, he helped Eichner shape the original song “Love Is Not Love,” which marks the emotional climax of the story. The night before shooting the scene in which Eichner’s Bobby confesses his love for Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), the actor decided that his speech needed to become “something bigger.” Eichner approached Shaiman with about ten minutes of song lyrics.

“A gay rom-com? I’m the king of rom-coms and I’m gayer than a goose, who else are you going to hire?” remembered composer Marc Shaiman about coming onboard Billy Eichner‘s romantic comedy “Bros,” which opened September 30. Shaiman and Eichner took part in a Q&a following a special screening of their film at New York City’s Whitby Hotel on October 5. Watch their discussion above (includes some spoilers).
See‘Bros’ will bring Billy Eichner to the Golden Globes for the first time
“Having him involved in any way is truly beyond my wildest dreams for the movie,” said Eichner about the Tony winner and seven-time Oscar nominee, whose scores have ranged from “Sleepless in Seattle” and “The American President” to “South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.” And not only did Shaiman contribute the score to “Bros,” he also collaborated with Eichner on writing the original song “Love is Not Love,...

With Hocus Pocus 2 hitting Disney+, a whole new generation will be introduced to the wicked Sanderson Sisters running amok in Salem, Massachusetts this Halloween. And one of the most iconic scenes in the Halloween staple is that dance sequence. You know the one: When Winifred Sanderson, played by the formidable Bette Midler, takes the stage at the town’s Halloween party in city hall and performs a version of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put A Spell on You,” leaving the majority of the adult residents in a state of hypnosis whereby they are set to dance until they die.
Despite clocking in at under five minutes long, the scene is so memorable that Hocus Pocus 2 will attempt to recreate the magic of the original, this time with Midler’s Winifred Sanderson performing a rendition of Blondie’s “One Way Or Another.” But can it live up to what came before?...

U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 is teaming with TV talent company Gritty Talent to help independent production companies build more diverse senior teams. The move in the wake of the broadcaster’s new commissioning guidelines published in June, which require all the indies it works with to have ethnically diverse as well as disabled off screen talent on production teams, with the new framework coming into play Aug. 1. The requirements are part of the legacy of Channel 4’s Black to Front Project.
Gritty Talent will define where the skills gaps and talent shortages exist across the U.K. in specific genres, and they will then help to identify the suitable talent. Genres under the spotlight first will be news and current affairs, factual entertainment and documentaries. The work will be supported by Channel 4’s strategic training and development initiative 4Skills, which focuses on supporting talent from diverse and disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds.
