It’s business time once again for Flight of the Conchords and HBO. The New Zealand-bred musical comedy duo of Jemaine Clement and Brett McKenzie will return to the network this fall for the first time since wrapping their namesake series in 2009. A one-hour special featuring new and classic songs — “Flight of the Conchords: Live at the London Apollo” — was taped at the Eventim Apollo on July 1.
First announced in January, the special was originally supposed to air this past May. However, in mid-March, dates on the pair’s tour of the UK and Ireland were postponed when McKenzie fell down stairs and broke two bones in his hand, hindering his guitar-playing. The twosome executive produced the TV concert with Mike Martinovich. Director Hamish Hamilton oversaw the proceedings; his credits include three Oscars telecasts, eight Super Bowl Halftime Shows, and this September’s Primetime Emmy Awards.

★★☆☆☆ When you think of Jane Austen, the typical image that immediately springs to mind is of dashing gents emerging from lakes in billowing white shirts. However, in Jerusha Hess' Austenland (2013), the first-time director attempts to contemporise the queen of Georgian literature, blending Austen's dry wit with a nerdish charm. The film follows the fortunes of Jane Hayes (Keri Russell), a thirtysomething obsessed with the eponymous Austen. In particular, she adores the writer's best-loved novel, Pride and Prejudice, hoping to one day find her very own Mr. Darcy - especially after hearing about an Austen-themed retreat.
On a whim, Jane decides to throw caution to the wind and spends all of her savings on what is guaranteed to be a life-changing trip. Once there, the bullish Mrs. Wattlesbrook (Jane Seymour), lady of the picturesque stately home, drills her guests daily in a series of period-specific activities - ranging from archery...

James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords, The Muppets, the upcoming The Muppets...Again!) is in talks to direct the sequel to Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010), provisionally titled Into the Looking Glass. It'll be a challenge for any director to match the sheer visual audacity and vibrancy that Tim Burton brought. (And if they don't, then the series will risk losing its muchness.) A few possible candidates with that kind of visual flair that come to mind, who've already made use of colour on that level, are Ang Lee (Life of Pi), Sam Raimi (Oz, The Great and Powerful, which arguably made the most integral use of 3D of any film other than Martin Scorsese's Hugo), Kurt Wimmer (Ultraviolet), the Wachowskis (Speed Racer), and Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers).
James Bobin may not have made a film as obviously visually stylish as those mentioned above with The Muppets,...

Ray Liotta has joined James Bobin's Muppets sequel, definitely making this Liotta's most gleeful moment since the time he got cast in 1999's Muppets from Space. No details on the role yet, but Liotta will join Ty Burrell, Ricky Gervais, and probably Tina Fey. It sounds like a pretty amazing time. Do you guys think Brett McKenzie just hangs out on set and works on hilarious songs? Don't you think Gonzo must be awesome in real life?...

The final Twilight takes $12.5m on opening weekend
The final instalment of the The Twilight Saga has had a massive opening weekend at the box office.
Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, distributed by Hoyts/StudioCanal, took $12.49m, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
Across a huge 655 screens, the film had a $19,070 screen average.
The film wasn’t a series’ best, however. The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the second film in the series, released three years ago, made $16.109m on its opening weekend to be the second-highest grossing opening film in Australian box office history, behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which made $18.364m in its first weekend.
However, Breaking Dawn is the third-highest opening weekend film in Australia for 2012. Batman film The Dark Knight remains the top opening weekend film for 2012, taking $15m. The Avengers took $13m.

In most, if not all, circumstances, I'm strongly physically opposed to reboots and remakes, but 2011's The Muppets is an entry that breaks the mold. Jim Henson's beloved characters have the power to span generations without losing any credibility or dignity. Following the wildfire success of the last years film, The Muppets 2 is quickly moving down the pipeline, including the recently announced returned of Flight of the Conchords member Brett McKenzie to pen more songs for the new sequel. Folks, we may have found the Rainbow Connection.

After a huge amount of critical acclaim and a fair amount of financial prosperity, Disney seems ready to move forward with a Muppets sequel. But sadly, one of the driving forces of the last film, Jason Segel, won't be behind it. Find out who's replacing him and more after the jump.
I loved The Muppets. I think that's already been pretty well documented, so I won't elaborate on it much more. However, one of the reasons I think The Muppets was as successful as it was is due in part to Jason Segel, who's pure love for the property was ever apparent on screen. Jason Segel was a mega Muppet fan, and most of the film's heart and humor derives from his love of the subject. But despite how successful Segel's first go around was, it seems like his involvement in the film's sequel will border from minimal to possibly non-existent.

With the continued successful figures at the box office for The Muppets it has been reported that a sequel is in the works. Word is Disney has secured a deal for director James Bobin and co-writer Nicholas Stoller for another outing. However it is not certain if Jason Segel will be on board, this is due to work commitments, Segel who is working on TV show How I Met Your Mother and also working on promo duties for The Five Year Engagement. It is feasible that he could yet be on board if his schedule allows but nothing has been confirmed on that front. Disney will also be sweating on whether song writer and composer Brett McKenzie will also participate; the studio is expected to make a strong effort to make that happen as his songs helped make the movie extremely popular. The possible loss of Segel would be seen as a major blow,...

The Oscars is probably my favorite award show that takes place next door to a Claire's. I'm serious. Have you been to the Kodak Theatre? It's basically a big recess in a Hollywood Boulevard mall, one with a Claire's and a Guess and an Express for Men. I remember watching Kate Winslet pick up her Oscar in 2009, the year I moved to L.A., and saying aloud, "So she basically walked past a Claire's to win that." It's tragic and telling. And kind of appropriate, because the Oscars -- much as I literally can't stop thinking about them -- are a mall-brand affair. The nominees are palatable, the format is bland, and the whole ceremony is devoted to mainstream flattery and appeal. But here's the other thing: I shop at the mall. It's at least clean.
And thankfully,...

The Muppets, depending on where you live, are about to return or have returned to the big screen, with that wonderful new blockbuster paradigm of a movie that is both a reboot and sequel (or prequel) at the same time.
Simply titled The Muppets, the movie stars and is co-written by Judd Apatow regular, Jason Segel. The original songs are written by one half of Flight Of The Conchords, Brett McKenzie. The traditional Muppet movie roster of celebrity cameos includes the likes of Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis and Neil Patrick Harris.
So: are the Muppets getting a little edgier this time around? If you look at the history of the Muppets, not really.
Right from the start, the Muppets (much like Bugs Bunny, Popeye and...

If you've ever read Inside Oscar, you'll know that the Best Original Song category at the Oscars has been infuriating people since time immemorial. They regularly snub instant classics and even when a great movie song is nominated it will usually lose. The music branch gets far less flak from the media than other controversial Academy subcategories like the Documentary group or the Foreign Language Film nominating committee but that's only because everyone knows that songwriting has very little to do with the actual art of cinema ... unless you're writing an original musical. Brett McKenzie's work on The Muppets aside, that really only happens once a decade or so.
Four other quirks to know.
The music branch Hates Madonna as a songwriter (the list of classic songs snubbed is alarming and her W.E. song "Masterpiece" has already been jettisoned) but likes her as a singer (both times she has...

This is fun. Last night Disney released what was perceived to be the trailer supplemented by very convincing poster marketing material for a schmaltzy rom-com coming out later this year from Jason Segel and Amy Adams titled Green With Envy before the rug is pulled – “What, there’s Muppets in this movie”? – and very quickly you realise it’s the trailer for the film within the film of this November’s The Muppets.
I showed the trailer to my girlfriend last night and she couldn’t stop giggling. A big fan of The Muppets, she quickly told me she hadn’t been looking forward to a movie with Kermit, Miss Piggy and the gang this much in years and I’d have to agree that the bright, wonderful, song and dance, high-camp trailer got me too.

Variety reports that the Clive Barker film Book Of Blood is one of a pair of genre features that Lightning Media has picked up for U.S. theatrical release. Director John Harrison had previously speculated (see item here) that Book would bypass big screens on the way to a debut on the Sci Fi Channel, but happily, that seems not to be the case now.
Like the other Lightning acquisitions, Book will hit Stateside venues late this year or in early 2010. The other flick of Fangorian appeal that the company grabbed is Diagnosis Death, a horror spoof that seems worth looking forward to since it features the cast of the hilarious HBO series Flight Of The Conchords: Brett McKenzie, Rhys Darby and Jemaine Clement. Jason Stutter (who's done documentary work for Peter Jackson) directed the film from a script he wrote with co-star Raybon Kan, about two people who...
