A pretentious patriarch, a dead child, a mysterious novel, and a stranger in the house, Alice Troughton’s The Lesson is a (very) slow-burn psychological drama film; some may even say a thriller about a young and aspiring author. The film is fairly short and intrigues with its beautiful landscapes and alluring home decor, keeping one on the edge (if that’s your thing). Liam Sommers is invited as a live-in tutor to his favorite author’s home. Overjoyed, Liam takes on the job and finds himself in a gorgeous estate with a lake and a beautiful backyard, where he tutors Bertie, the high schooler that he’s meant to get into Oxford University. The film relies heavily on tropes and ends up being quite predictable by the end.

If you’re still feeling very big feelings after Episode 3 of “Lessons in Chemistry,” thanks to some poignant narration from a certain pup, don’t worry — you’re not alone. In fact, directors Bert and Bertie specifically set out to do that. But, they do admit that telling a story of grief through the lens of a dog was “eye-opening,” even for them.
In this particular episode of the Brie Larson-led limited series, now streaming on Apple TV+, the opening minutes tell the origin story of Six Thirty, the dog Elizabeth Zott (Larson) adopted who later tried saving Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman) from running out into the street to his death. Not only is it a heartbreaking origin — he started as a military dog, but ran away — but the narration that follows, courtesy of B.J. Novak, likely left you holding your own dog close, as Six Thirty mourned his running buddy and blamed himself.

For the vast majority of its time on air, :a[The Walking Dead]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/tv/reviews/walking-dead-season-1-review/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} was primarily the story of Rick Grimes. Sure, AMC’s sprawling zombie saga had an ensemble cast, and all kinds of characters you fell in love with but at the heart of it all was Andrew Lincoln’s former sheriff, waking from a coma to a world overrun with flesh-chomping ghouls. Bummer. Then, in Season 9, he bowed out of the show, only to briefly to return in the series finale, alluding to his whereabouts. There's a moment after one of The Lesson's lessons where a young student talks about the freedom to compare works between genres, to look for parallels. There's another where there's a discussion of a third section, how it doesn't quite fit with tone. These two, perhaps slightly more than anything else, are keys to reading a film that is deliberately literary in its aspirations and inspirations, and all the more powerful for it.
There are five parts. To the story, epilogue, prologue, I, II, that ill-fitting III. To the cast, author Jm Sinclair, wife Helene, son Bertie, butler Ellis, and into them tutor Liam. The intent is for Bertie to earn a place at one of the Oxbridge colleges, competitive enough that graduate Liam is brought on in lieu of boarding school study to get Bertie over the line. It's one of many lines, crossed, crossed out, outed.
Five points interconnected will.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande star Daryl McCormack shines in this handsomely executed mystery thriller from British director Alice Troughton, best known for her work on the legendary TV series Doctor Who. Written by Alex MacKeith, The Lesson also features exquisite performances from acclaimed French actor Julie Delpy and Oscar-nominated Richard E Grant. Although purely fictional, MacKeith is said to have based the story on real life events that arose after he was hired as a tutor by a writer he admired.
Aspiring young writer Liam (McCormack), accepts a tutoring position at the family home of his writing idol, the acclaimed author J.M. Sinclair (Grant). Liam is immediately seduced by his host’s seemingly perfect existence. But soon, the young man finds himself involved in his new employers’ complicated family life and the secrets they keep. A charismatic young tutor comes to help a tragedy-stuck family in a bookish drama that’s fun and smart, but not entirely convincing
Here is a brittle and contrived but rather elegant Brit thriller about literary paranoia from debut feature screenwriter Alex MacKeith and director Alice Troughton, herself a cinema first-timer having had much acclaim working on TV. The upscale and sophisticated mise-en-scène is rather French; Julie Delpy has a role here and looks quite at home.
Richard E Grant plays Jm Sinclair, a bestselling, sharp-tongued author who gives roguish interviews repeating the old maxim that good artists borrow but great ones steal. He is married to art collector Hélène (Delpy) and they live in a handsome country estate with extensive grounds and a lake. But Sinclair, usually so prolific, has retreated to a haunted creative silence following the tragic death of his elder son; the parents are now concerned...

In Alice Broughton’s tense literary drama “The Lesson,” Richard E. Grant plays one of Britain’s most noted authors, J.M. Sinclair, who hasn’t put out a book in years. He decides to mentor aspiring novelist Liam (Daryl McCormack) after he’s hired as a tutor for his college-bound son Bertie (Stephen McMillan), but the power dynamic between them soon shifts.
Ahead of the film’s limited theatrical release on Friday, TheWrap chatted about with the Oscar-nominated “Can You Ever Forgive Me” actor about his narcissistic character — who would never watch anything as “squalid” as Grant’s breakout indie “Withnail & I” — and how it’s a little like Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rebecca.”
TheWrap: You play a famous writer who’s quite mercurial and manipulative. How would you describe him?

Every moment in The Lesson’s early going seemingly exists to illustrate pulp novelist Jim Thompson’s famous saying: “There is only one plot—things are not what they seem.” We see eminent novelist J.M. Sinclair (Richard E. Grant) languidly remarking to an interviewer that “average writers attempt originality…the great writers steal.” Then up-and-coming writer Liam Sommers (Daryl McCormack) is seen studying videos of J.M. with a mysterious intensity before he then shows up at J.M.’s luxurious home to tutor the man’s son, Bertie (Stephen McMillan). Throughout, the close-ups of the algae-covered pond behind the home make it seem as if a better name for the film would have been What Lies Beneath.

Films about fictitious great writers often stumble when it comes to the character’s actual writing: Viewers must suspend disbelief that a lofty literary reputation has been built on the purplest of screenwriter-devised prose. A blackly comic melodrama in which writerly ego, ambition and insecurity do increasingly destructive battle, “The Lesson” gets around that trap by folding questions of authorship into its arch country-house mystery: Who is writing what, and to what extent it matters, are the questions that keep director Alice Troughton and screenwriter Alex MacKeith’s mutual debut feature interesting, even as it slides into occasional, overheated cliché.
When the film’s own words don’t quite pass muster, however, a tight, tony ensemble of actors gives them some polish and punch. A big, ripe turn by Richard E. Grant — as a celebrated British novelist looking to emerge from a gloomy hiatus with one more masterwork — represents the...

Alice Troughton’s first feature is a jewel, an exquisitely made chamber piece with Richard E. Grant as J.M. Sinclair, an acclaimed novelist on his way down, Julie Delpy as Helene, his art-curator wife, and Daryl McCormack as Liam, a would-be novelist who idolizes Sinclair. With a clever script that keeps us off guard, the setting of a gracious country estate whose sumptuous visuals mask a dark undercurrent, and a score that entices us into an increasingly unsettling world, The Lesson is a small delight.
The opening scene makes it seem as if we can see the film’s whole trajectory. Liam is being interviewed about his first novel, whose plot about a great patriarchal writer is obviously based on Sinclair. The narrative then flashes back to the beginning of the story, when Liam is hired to tutor the Sinclairs’ son, Bertie (Stephen McMillan), for his entrance exams to Oxford University.

Though it doesn’t exactly have the same warm, melancholic charm, Alice Troughton’s elegant literary thriller The Lesson could give star Richard E. Grant the kind of late-career bump that last year’s Living afforded Bill Nighy. An Oscar nom might be a little fanciful at this stage, but a BAFTA shot is a no-brainer, with Grant on top form as a mercurial, narcissistic British author. Co-star Julie Delpy might also find new offers coming in, showing a stiletto-sharp new side to herself as his enigmatic wife.
Though it doesn’t have the intensity of this year’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall, Troughton’s upper-middle-class gothic is working in similar territory — with the exception of art curator Hélène, three of the four main characters are writers at various stages of their career. The minimalistic opening credits set an intriguing tone — if Sally Potter made a Knives Out movie,...

Right from the get-go, composers Tyler Bates and Timothy Williams both knew that they wanted to be a part of the Netflix show, “Agent Elvis.” In addition to the concept of the show itself, Williams found several other reasons to be involved. “The whole concept of it was really interesting. Plus the era that it’s set in is late ‘60s, early ‘70s, which is one of my favorite periods of music. Just so much incredible stuff came out of that period of time,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). Bates adds that they had a green light to basically do whatever they wanted. “Everyone involved really prompted Tim and I to enjoy being quite zany with our approach.”

Matthew McConaughey playing Elvis? Here’s the crazy new series, Agent Elvis, in which the legendary singer fights crime alongside his monkey with high levels of… testosterone.
In addition, the voices of Kaitlin Olson, Johnny Knoxville or Don Cheadle guarantee us a daring, very loutish – and quality – series.
About the Series
A series that will serve to reconcile some fans with the streaming network that, let’s face it, has everything and now gets into adult animation like Harley Quinn (HBO Max) and, with a similar style, takes us to Las Vegas to contemplate the eccentricities of this Elvis turned James Bond.
A hilarious series produced by none other than Priscilla Presley who was married to… you get the picture.
A lot of the Tarantino touch mixed with psychedelia.
Enjoy this very, very offbeat series aimed at an audience eager to live an experience… on the other side of the familiar dark side.

The best thing about Netflix’s Agent Elvis, which posits Elvis Presley as a spy within a covert government program, isn’t Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey voicing the rock ‘n’ roll icon. He just sounds like himself, which is funny enough and saves him the trouble of Austin Butler-esque permanent burn-in.
The highlight isn’t the animation, though the Sony Pictures Animation and Titmouse team deliver ample comic book-flavored pizzazz.
It will surprise regular readers that my favorite thing in Agent Elvis isn’t even that Elvis is accompanied by a debauched, sociopathic chimpanzee sidekick — not that I’m complaining that a debauched, sociopathic chimpanzee plays a major role in Agent Elvis.
No, the best thing about Netflix’s Agent Elvis is that no matter how outlandish and ridiculous it is, it’s all true. Ok, fine. It isn’t All true. Probably most of it isn’t true,...

Hawkeye directors Bert & Bertie are staying in the Disney family. The duo, who helmed three episodes of the Marvel/Disney+ series, have signed on to direct a feature for Disney based on the theme park attraction Big Thunder Mountain.
Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free will produce, with Bert & Bertie directing from a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, the married screenwriting pair whose credits include Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and the 2017 Power Rangers reboot.
Big Thunder Mountain, which is at multiple Disney parks, takes place in a mining town amid the gold rush of the 1800s. Disaster inevitably strikes the attraction, which is hit by either an earthquake (California, Paris), tsunami (Tokyo) or flash flood (Florida).

Another of Disney’s classic theme park rides is set to get the big screen treatment. Deadline has reported that Hawkeye directors Bert & Bertie are in negotiations to direct a movie based on the Big Thunder Mountain attraction at Disney Theme Parks.
The original Big Thunder Mountain ride opened in 1979 at Disneyland. “Legend has it that after gold was discovered in the 1850s, eerie incidents took place in the mine,” reads the official description of the ride. “Trains would take off and race through tunnels… by themselves. As you enter the cursed cavern, your train speeds up along the rickety track. Shoot under a booming waterfall and dodge a falling boulder from an unexpected landslide as you swoop around sharp turns and drop into desolate canyons. On this rip-roaring adventure, you may learn that some legends turn out to be true…” The ride went on to be featured at Disney World,...

Disney is once again turning to theme park rides as inspiration for movies, so let's hope this next one is more of a "Pirates of the Caribbean" than a "The Country Bears." According to Deadline, the new project will be based on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, a gold rush-themed roller coaster that's been a part of Disneyland since 1979.
Though details about the project are still under wraps, the movie already has directors and writers on board. The filmmaking duo known as Bert and Bertie are reportedly in talks to direct the as-yet-untitled project. Bert and Bertie are perhaps best-known for their work on Marvel's "Hawkeye" series, for which they helmed three episodes last year.
A certain faction of TV viewers, myself included, also bows down to the Berties for their stunning work on "Our Flag Means Death," including on the episode that memorably ends with an epic scene set to Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain.

It’s the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness! Disney is in the works on a movie inspired by its Disneyland attraction Big Thunder Mountain, and “Hawkeye” directors Bert & Bertie — the professional name of the duo Amber Templemore-Finlayson and Katie Ellwood — are in negotiations to direct the film, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney (“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”) are writing the script for the film, though plot details are being kept under wraps.
Margot Robbie’s production banner LuckyChap Entertainment and Ridley Scott’s banner Scott Free are both producing the film.

Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for “A League of Their Own,” including the ending.
When Prime Video’s “A League of Their Own” finally said the 1992 film’s iconic “There’s no crying in baseball!” it doesn’t unfold the way you’d expect.
The line comes from Jess (Kelly McCormack), when Carson (Abbi Jacobson) buckles under the pressure of having to take over as coach for Dove (Nick Offerman). It’s one of many moments where Jacobson and co-creator Will Graham’s team of writers subvert Penny Marshall’s film and make it their own.
“Jimmy Dugan, what you love [about him] is that it’s a redemption story,” co-creator and star Jacobson told IndieWire over Zoom, citing Tom Hanks’ role in the film. “We’re in no way trying to take that character, but we’re also really subverting what the coach role from the film looks like in the show.

Penny Marshall's iconic film about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl) was a box office smash when it came out in 1992. In 2012, it was preserved by the National Film Industry for being "culturally significant."
Thankfully this reboot, or re-imagining as the creators like to call it, builds upon the core themes and expands to include a broader range of characters.
There are plenty of nods to the film, but this new series allows the players room to breathe, giving them more rich and complex identities instead of tokenizing them.
This time there are queer characters, something that represents the Aagpbl players more authentically instead of straight-washing (even though these characters are fictional). Not only that, but there are Black and Latina characters, which were sorely lacking in the original.
As much as the original film is a product of its time (1992 was 30 years ago!), so is the series.

Note: The following contains spoilers for “A League of Their Own.”
Honoring Penny Marshall’s 1992 film, Prime Video’s new “A League of Their Own” series replicates the movie’s dual narrative in a new way. Carson Shaw (Abbi Jacobson) and Max Chapman (Chanté Adams) do not share the bond of sisterhood like the original film’s Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis) and Kit Keller (Lori Petty), but their love of baseball brings them together in the show and allows them to connect over their shared queer identities.
Carson Shaw haphazardly catches her train to tryouts, leaving behind her household and in some ways, her marriage to Charlie Shaw (Patrick J. Adams), though he has not yet returned from war. On this new adventure, she discovers not only a fierce love for her baseball team and the drive to win, but also women who like other women.

Prime Video's new "A League of Their Own" series is, as the saying goes, a whole different ball game -- at least when you compare it with the film it's based on. The series takes place in the 1940s and follows the newly assembled members of the groundbreaking Rockford Peaches women's baseball team, but other than that, it bears little resemblance to the 1992 movie by Penny Marshall.
Instead, the latest iteration of the story spotlights a rarely explored slice of real history: the love lives and identities of the LGBT+ teammates, and the experiences of Black athletes -- namely pitcher Max (Chanté Adams) -- who weren't allowed to join the team.
A Show Of Good Sportsmanship
Most of the first season of "A League of Their Own" isn't exactly what you'd call a sports story. The show follows the newly assembled Rockford Peaches through a season of gameplay, but the...

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” is moving premiere dates at Disney+ — but not by much.
The Marvel Studios show will now debut on Thursday, Aug. 18 instead of Aug. 17 as originally announced. New episodes of the nine-episode series will drop weekly on Thursdays after that. Tatiana Maslany stars as the titular hero and lawyer, with Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, Benedict Wong, Ginger Gonzaga, Josh Segarra, Jameela Jamil, Jon Bass and Renée Elise Goldsberry also appearing in the series.
Furthermore, it has been announced that Season 31 of the competition series “Dancing With the Stars” will make its Disney+ debut on Sept. 19. It was first revealed in April that the long-running show would be leaving ABC in favor of the streaming platform. Troop Zero is the kind of film you just wish they made more of. A simple, good natured story, well told without an ounce of pretentiousness. A feel-good movie about a ragtag troop of girl scouts called ‘Birdies’? Unless you’ve just fallen into a crocodile infested pit (for heaven’s sake call somebody), Troop Zero cannot fail to make you smile.
Costume designer for Troop Zero is Caroline Eselin-Schaefer, she of Moonlight (2016), Under the Silver Lake (2018), If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) and many, many others. Intuitive and meticulous, Caroline Eselin is someone who really ‘feels’ the projects she works on. Troop Zero is indicative of this approach. Very kindly she has agreed to share with us her inspiration and process for the movie. Read on – if you’ve got this far it just gets better.

For the first time in 2020, we bring the review round-up to you fine folks. Yes, today we’re catching up on a trio of movies that I just wasn’t able to put reviews up of until now. The three films getting the treatment here are independent titles that couldn’t be more different. The indies in question are the coming of age dramedy Troop Zero, the surreal retro found footage type flick VHYes, and the trippy science fiction “comedy” The Wave. Are they all worth your time? Are any of them worth it? Read on to find out… Troop Zero A cast as strong as this one deserves a slightly better movie than we get here with Troop Zero. A family friendly coming of age story, too often it seems like shortcuts are being taken. Quirky moments substitute for true character development. It all just falls flatter than expected,...

It’s 1977 in Wiggly, Georgia, and Christmas Flint (moppet extraordinaire Mckenna Grace) is pining for a purpose. The nine-year-old lives with her widower dad (Jim Gaffigan), who everyone calls “Boss Man,” in something like a rural, commune-like trailer park. She has a reputation around school as a weak-bladdered “Wetsy Betsy,” which doesn’t make her the most popular kid there. And like a lot of her fellow misfits — the Bowie–obsessed boy next door (Charlie Shotwell), the born-again Christian with an eyepatch (Bell Higginbotham), the bully (Milan Ray) who really has a heart of gold,...

Back in 2005, Bert met Bertie. Bert was producing a series of short films to accompany Sony’s “The Getaway” video game series while Bertie served as the game’s writer. The two struck up an immediate kinship and found that together they were a “creative melting pot of ideas.”
Cut to 14 years later. The female duo — who call themselves “The Berts” — are headed to Park City, Utah, to unveil their sophomore effort “Troop Zero.” The Amazon film, written by “Beasts of the Southern Wild” scribe Lucy Alibar, follows a young spunky girl named Christmas Flint (Mc-

The film, an outsider comedy full of girl power, attracted such grownup stars as Viola Davis and Allison Janney.
