The famous twist at the end of Irvin Kershner's 1980 sci-fi epic "The Empire Strikes Back" — that the evil Darth Vader (James Earl Jones/David Prowse) was actually the father of the heroic Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) — was shocking enough to send seismic ripples through the future of pop culture. Young prospective filmmakers reared in 1980 were so shocked by the famed "Empire" revelation that the "hero was secretly related to the villain this whole time" twist would eventually become a common screenwriting trope.
As many Starwoids will be able to tell you, the "I am your father" twist famously contradicts dialogue from George Lucas' "Star Wars" from three years earlier. In that film, the trustworthy Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) revealed that he was friends with Luke's father, who was, by Obi-Wan's own description, definitely not Darth Vader. Indeed, Darth Vader was said to have murdered Luke's father. So when...

Neil Gaiman is a dreamer. The prolific Hugo-, Nebula-, and Newbery-winning author has spent four decades crafting strange, beautiful, and sometimes terrifying worlds that lure in readers of all ages. His extensive bibliography includes superhero stories for Marvel and DC Comics, dark fairy tales, and a book of Norse mythology — and many of those works have taken on new life as film and TV adaptations, radio plays, or theatrical productions.
Gaiman likes to take a very active role in bringing his writing to new mediums, working with the actors and showrunners to ensure that the results both delight his devoted fans and introduce new audiences to his powerful imagination. He co-developed and served as an executive producer of The Sandman and promises “good things are coming” for its next round of episodes. And with the arrival of Dead Boy Detectives, there’s no better time to get acquainted...

Considered by many to be the magnum opus of author Cormac McCarthy – whose works include No Country for Old Men, The Road, All the Pretty Horses, and Child of God, among others – the violent Western Blood Meridian (you can pick up a copy Here) was published in 1985… and in the years since, several filmmakers have made unsuccessful attempts to bring the story to the screen. Adaptations have passed through the hands of Tommy Lee Jones, Ridley Scott, and James Franco, with Franco getting the furthest with it, shooting 25 minutes of test footage before the producer shut down the project. With unrelenting violence and a dark tone, Blood Meridian has been said to be unfilmable. But director John Hillcoat, who previously helmed the feature based on The Road (pictured below), is pushing an adaptation forward at New Regency, and Deadline reports that John Logan, who received Oscar nominations for his work on the scripts for Hugo,...

With The Fall Guy, Ryan Gosling and director David Leitch created a love letter to below-the-line filmmakers, specifically the stunt teams behind big blockbuster movies. Leitch, who is a former stuntman turned director, noted in the post-screening Q&a at SXSW on Tuesday that early creative conversations with Gosling led to personal touches being added to the final film.
Gosling plays Colt, a stuntman who, after getting out of the business for a year, is called back into action when the star of a big studio movie suddenly disappears and that big studio movie happens to be directed by his ex (Emily Blunt). Colt gets wrapped up in a murder and cover-up that become much bigger than him or the film he is desperate to get made. Along the way to trying to solve the murder, he gets a sidekick in the form of a dog who only understands commands given in French.

Liz Tigelaar is readying her next Hulu series.
The showrunner of Little Fires Everywhere and Tiny Beautiful Things is developing a limited series based on Lucy Foley’s best-seller, The Guest List, which Hulu won the rights to in what proved another wild bidding war. The news comes as the broader IP market has only grown frothier amid the dual Hollywood strikes, which ground production to a halt and left the industry with little else to sell.
The TV iteration, like Foley’s 2020 book, will be set on a remote island off a rugged coast, where guests attend an elaborate celebrity wedding. “But with a storm brewing, the picture-perfect affair darkens as the guests and their shared histories dangerously collide — and then the lights go out. And a body is found,” reads the project’s official logline. “As old secrets are brought to the surface, and the mysteries swirl — the question remains,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers through Claim to Fame Season 2 Episode 8.] Claim to Fame comes to a close on Monday, August 28. The two-hour Season 2 finale will reveal who walks away with the $100,000. Episode 9 kicks off at 9/8c on ABC and will send one of the final four packing before Episode 10 crowns the winner. Will it be Karsyn, Monay, Chris, or Gabriel who walks away victorious? Let’s look at their performances throughout the season. Gabriel is the clear front runner, as he’s won the most challenges and his pop culture knowledge seems to run deepest out of everyone in the final four. Monay has been a strong theorist throughout the season, but she did think Hugo’s Elton John theory held weight. Gabriel, on the other hand, didn’t buy into that idea and was the only one who got close to deciphering the true meaning of Chris’s clues. Chris’s relative, if you...

Warning: contains spoilers for the Wolf finale.
Twists exist to make things fun, not to make them efficient – just ask a helter-skelter. BBC crime thriller Wolf is very much a helter-skelter of a show. It spins you around and around until you feel sick and think up is down – very entertaining in the moment, but by the time you’ve handed the little coir mat back to the man with the bum-bag full of 50p pieces, you’re left standing outside WHSmith with questions.
Questions like: was this show set in a parallel world where everyone has to do a jury duty-style stint as the senior investigating officer in a murder investigation? Because these are not good coppers. Or good criminals, for that matter. With huge spoilers, let’s dig in to that ending.

It's the most fantastic time of the year once again, when the fans of the creepy, the weird, the fun, and the bizarre gather in Austin Texas to celebrate a whole week of the best genre cinema has to offer during another iteration of Fantastic Fest.
The ongoing double strike of SAG-AFTRA and the WGA, and the studios' stupid refusal to negotiate already, put all the fall film festivals in doubt. Still, the lineup for this year's Fantastic Fest seems to maintain the expected balance of big genre premieres, international titles, small indies, and all-around weird stuff.
Possibly the biggest announcement is the triumphant return of Mike Flanagan to Austin with the first two episodes of his last Netflix show, "The Fall of the House of Usher," which boasts the most impressive cast for a Flanagan joint yet. The last time the filmmaker was at the festival was with...

Take a look at the man in the denim jacket in this clip from ABC's Claim to Fame. His name is Chris. He has a celebrity relative. One of his fellow contestants, Jane, is about to guess that Chris is related to Elvis Presley. She has her reasons, including a clue that seemed like it was referring to a "hound dog" and a pop idol who died in the '70s.
Jane was wrong and was eliminated from the game. Then, in Episode 7, Hugo was the unlucky contestant who made the house consensus that Chris' celebrity relative was Elton John as his formal guess. Hugo was eliminated just like Jane.

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Claim to Fame Season 2 Episode 7.] The Claim to Fame cast was brought to tears when Hugo’s celebrity relative was revealed in Episode 7. It wasn’t Hugo’s elimination that got them teary-eyed, but rather his claim to fame’s contributions to American history. As we predicted early on, Hugo’s celebrity relative is President Jimmy Carter, his maternal grandfather. As revealed at the end of the episode, his mother is Amy Carter, the 39th president’s only daughter. She grew up in the White House when her father was Commander in Chief from 1977 to 1981, and Hugo calls him “Papa.” Hugo (last name Wentzel) was eliminated when he incorrectly guessed that Chris is related to Elton John, marking the second time someone has been sent home for making an incorrect guess about his famous family member’s identity. (Jane — real name Jada — went home in Episode 3 after guessing he was related to Elvis ...

Given his growing tendency to line up half of Hollywood to appear in his films, anyone cast in a Wes Anderson movie might worry just how much screen time they’ll end up getting.
Not Fisher Stevens.
After minor roles in The Grand Budapest Hotel (a concierge), Isle of Dogs (the voice of a mutt called Scrap) and The French Dispatch (an unnamed magazine story editor), he’s now set to make a similarly background appearance in Asteroid City, Anderson’s latest, and featuring arguably the director’s most ludicrous array of top-tier talent to date (a list so long, it may test the wide lenses of Cannes’ red carpet paparazzi when it bows May 23). And very happily so.

This post contains spoilers for "Succession" season 4, episode 7 "Tailgate Party."
"Succession" is in its final season and each character's narrative arc is coming to a close. But with Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong), the golden failson, the arc is being brought full circle. The middle child of a late Murdoch-like media titan, Kendall has always been a driving force of the series, swinging on the mighty pendulum from heir-apparent to heir-apparently-not. He reaches great heights in his Icarian quest to inherit his father's company, but his will to power always crashes and burns.
It happened in season 1 when he attempted to usurp his father after being denied his promised succession rights, and it will happen again in season 4 as he attempts to cling to his late dad's declining empire. It doesn't take a crystal ball to see this one coming, though — the show has been drawing very clear parallels between...

Before becoming one of the most divisive filmmakers in horror with the likes of Halloween and The Munsters, Rob Zombie was just a musician trying his hand at the film industry. House of 1000 Corpses came together fairly quickly following a failed attempt to reboot The Crow, but the rock star’s Hollywood career almost never was due to post-production controversy that left his directorial debut on the shelf for three years.
Production on Corpses was completed in 2000 before Universal Studios refused to release it due to its objectionable content. MGM later came on board to distribute it in 2002 until a tongue-in-cheek remark by Zombie caused them to cancel the deal. Finally, Lions Gate signed on and released it in April of 2003, launching Zombie’s film career as well as a franchise that would be followed by 2005’s The Devil’s Rejects and 2019’s 3 from Hell.

This post contains spoilers for "Succession" season 4, episode 6, "Living+."
The latest episode of "Succession" centered on Waystar Royco's "Investor Day" — potentially the company's last, given its impending acquisition by GoJo owner Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). During the episode, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) is preparing to give a presentation on Waystar's newest project, "Living+" (also the title of the episode). What is it? It's essentially a search for immortality — one that didn't come in time for Logan (Brian Cox). Logan seemed (rightfully) concerned about his mortality during season 4, so his backing research into "Living+" makes sense.
It's just as in character for Kendall to pursue such a foolhardy goal and brand it as though eternal life would just be another piece of Waystar's premium content. Worse for him, no one else seems convinced by the pitch — least of all Matsson. The previous episode, "Kill List," firmly set Kendall and Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Matsson as enemies.

The Roy siblings come down from the Norwegian mountains and go Hollywood in “Living+,” Episode 6 of “Succession’s” fourth and final season.
With a very attractive offer from Scandinavian online goliath GoJo to buy their media empire Waystar in play, Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin) and Siobhan (Sarah Snook) want to fix their money-bleeding movie studio while preparing to host a shareholder’s presentation at the glamorous location. Will the lame-duck corporate leaders be able (or really want) to sell their investors on not only the merger points, but an ambitious new real estate venture their dad and Waystar’s founder Logan Roy (Brian Cox) was preparing before his sudden death?
The answers involve high drama and copious comic cringe.

Emily Blunt left her mark on Cannes, and not just with her acclaimed performances.
The actor, in town for the pre-Mipcom premiere of the first episode of her six-part series “The English,” also left a handprint in wet concrete, joining the likes of Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep or David Lynch.
Blunt was joined on the red carpet by co-star Chaske Spencer, as well as writer and director Hugo Blick, the latter also behind Maggie Gyllenhaal starrer “The Honorable Woman.”
In “The English,” Blunt plays an aristocratic Englishwoman, Lady Cornelia Locke, who comes to America in the 1890s.
