Dropping out from Bits, reaching Rotterdam with full marks filmmaker Ishan Shukla’s animated journey
He may have cracked the prestigious Bits entrance but during his time there, what interested him more was writing plays and sketching. He soon realised, not Thermodynamics but looking inside people’s minds interested him. And that is when he decided to do an animation course in Singapore next.
Filmmaker Ishan Shukla, whose dystopian sci-fi animation film ‘Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust’, which will have its world premiere at the prestigious 53rd International Film Festival of Rotterdam (IFFR) smiles, “Well, it may sound all cool now, but believe me, I was really worried that time — what if I don’t get a job after the animation course? Of course, I don’t generally admit that,” he tells Ians.
While he did get a job in Singapore, in less than a year it started getting boring for him.

They brought along with them ample thrills, chills, and psychological intrigue. Here is our pick of the best, immersive entertainers from this lot.

When I first saw the second season of Delhi Crime my initial reaction was relief. Thank God, the second season turned out to be as gripping, if not more than the first season. When “Bellbottom,” starring Akshay Kumar, releases on Aug. 19, it will be the first major Bollywood film to release in Indian cinemas after a quarter devastated by the deadly second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Only 50% of screens in India have reopened and many of them are operating at reduced capacity. The rest, including those in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra, home to Mumbai and the Bollywood and Marathi-language film industries, remain closed.
The film is an 1980s-set thriller set against the backdrop of a spate of Indian Airlines hijackings by forces hostile to India. Kumar plays an Indian secret agent code-named Bellbottom.
The film is produced by veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani’s Pooja Entertainment (“Coolie No 1”) in association with Emmay Entertainment (“The Empire”).
“Vashu Bhagnani is a bold and brave man and I respect that he is the first to take the leap, despite the fact certain major territories...

New Delhi, Dec 10 (Ians) Actor Denzil Smith claims his talent is appreciated more abroad, adding that he stumbled upon this fact while working with Hollywood filmmaker Christopher Nolan on his film, Tenet.
"I learned that my talent is appreciated internationally," Denzil told Ians while discussing his takeaway from the project.
"(I learned) that I am able to communicate on a larger level (internationally). I learned that it is a pleasure to work with people who share your vision and when you are in sync," he added.
Nolan's new film is a spy thriller that takes one on a thrilling time-bending mission with two secret agents, essayed by Robert Pattinson and John David Washington.
Asked how did he stay in touch with the complex plot, the "Delhi Crime" actor said: "One understands it as one goes along."
"He (Nolan) gives you the background of the scene. There's no great complexity when you are doing your part.

Bollywood period espionage thriller “Bellbottom,” starring Akshay Kumar (“Pad Man”), and directed by Ranjit Tewari (“Lucknow Central”) has wrapped its Scotland shoot, making it one of the first projects globally to start and complete its entire shoot during the coronavirus pandemic.
Producers Pooja Entertainment (“Coolie No. 1”) flew the 200-strong crew in a chartered flight to Glasgow and quarantined them for 14 days, creating a bubble, and completed the film in a 45-day schedule over August and September.
The unit worked closely with Scotland’s Screen Commission and adhered to Covid-safe guidelines. Besides medical-grade PPE, and required distancing, the production made it mandatory for all cast and crew to wear a watch that constantly monitored their oxygen levels, body temperature, blood pressure, stress levels and pulse. A centralized dashboard constantly recorded the parameters of the entire unit and kept a check for any changes in readings.

Two people were injured Sunday in Singapore when a ceiling partially collapsed during a screening of Tenet at the Shaw Theatres Nex Mall.
“It hurt because a piece of the ceiling hit my head, and my heart was racing. It was really confusing because we thought the sounds from the crashing was from speakers behind us,” one viewer called Venkat told Must Share News (Ms News), a local web publication.
The collapse happened around 5 Pm local time. That’s when a large section of the ventilation duct crashed through the ceiling, hitting attendees seated in the area. One of the injured was transported to the hospital by officers from the Singapore Civil Defence and Singapore Police Force.
“Unfortunately, two patrons were injured. They were quickly attended to by our staff and then by paramedics who arrived. They were subsequently taken to the hospital,” a spokesperson for the mall told Channel News Asia.

John David Washington trains to prevent World War III in the latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s time-bending thriller, Tenet. The new trailer debuted on online video game Fortnite.

“Tenet” and “Fortnite” became an unlikely duo Thursday night.
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming thriller teased more action and time-bending mystery in a new trailer released in the hugely popular battle royale video game.
Not much is known about the film, which is Nolan’s first since 2017’s “Dunkirk.” It follows a group of secret agents who are working to prevent World War III and appear to utilize time-bending abilities in their mission.
The trailer showed big action setpieces in several countries, including a Boeing 747 driving through a building in a fiery crash. Another brand new scene showed an intense shootout in a concert hall full of people who appeared knocked out or asleep. A couple characters also mentioned saving “people in the future who need us” and how they’ll need to “reverse the flow of time.”

In spite of undeniable crackling chemistry between the two very talented actors who play the Malhotra couple, "Mind The Malhotras" feels as flat and stale as pancakes from yesterday's breakfast, a rancid after-taste which no amount of maple syrup can conceal.
There are mother-in-law jokes, the discipline-the-child jokes, control-the-domestic help jokes, love-thy-insufferable-neighbours jokes, incorrect-angrezi-pronunciation jokes, wife's weight jokes. Weight...there is more. There is even a Basanti-seduces-Thakur joke which I am pretty sure won't amuse Ramesh Sippy.
I am sure originally, the writing adapted from the Israeli series "La Familigia" must have made the team for the desi adaptation roll off their chairs in sheer glee. Alas, very little of the original humour renders itself to a rib-tickling translocation. Most of the humour shared by the lead pair is generated more from their innate talent to liven up proceedings than organically from the content.

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Netflix has landed Indian anthology drama series Delhi Crime, with what I hear is a two-season order. The series (original title Delhi Crime Story) hails from award winning Canadian-Indian auteur Richie Mehta; Golden Karavan, the Mumbai-based venture of leading TV producer Aaron Kaplan, media investor Jeff Sagansky, Florence Sloan, Apoorva Bakshi, Pooja Kohli and Sanjay Bachani; as well as John Penotti, Michael Hogan and Kilian Kerwin’s Ivanhoe Pictures (Crazy Rich Asians).
The deal was made on the eve of Delhi Crime‘s Jan. 29 world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in the Indie Episodic category. I hear it covers the already produced seven-episode first season in addition to a second installment. Season 1 of the police-procedural thriller will debut on Netflix worldwide March 22.
Delhi Crime marks Kaplan’s 10th on-air series and second on Netflix, joining Santa Clarita Diet, which he executive produces through Kapital Entertainment.

“Delhi Crime Story,” a seven-part series by Indo-Canadian writer-director Richie Mehta (“Siddharth”) will have its world premiere at Sundance in early 2019.
Mehta was at the 2nd International Film Festival and Awards, Macao (Iffam), in 2017 with “The Price of Tea,” one of the three auteur projects at the Iffam project market that year. Set in Beijing, the film will follow a Canadian man who falls for a Chinese woman over the course of a magical day only to discover that she is not what she seems.
Several parts of “Delhi Crime Story” will play as part of Sundance’s Indie Episodic strand. Based on the 2012 rape case in Delhi that shocked the world, the series centers on the heroic actions of the Delhi police. With the eyes of the world upon it, the investigation is led by one passionate female officer who was driven to find the perpetrators by the crime’s extreme brutality.

Starring Sonakshi Sinha, Jassi Gill, Jiimy Sheirgil, Denzil Smith, Aparshakti Khurrana
Directed by Mudassar Aziz
A rom-com works—and this one sure does!—only when the writer and the cast have fun doing it. By that reckoning , the writer-director Mudassar Aziz and his delectable cast must have enjoyed themselves as though there is no tomorrow.
As far as sequels go Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi (Hpbj) is a long-legged sprinter. It hops skips and gambols through a maze of amusing incidents woven around some of the most wittily constructed yet inoffensive ethnic jokes seen and heard in Hindi cinema, notorious for insulting cultures and nationalities.
Most of the comedy of mistaken identity is set in China , and that in itself unique. The last time a Hindi film took us to that vast country of illimitable possibilities was when Nikhil Advani made that unintentionally hilarious Akshay-Deepika fiasco Chandni Chowk To China.

“Gurinder’s expectation was to have something very classic, very rooted and at the same time universal. I’ve used the sarangi, a strings and brass orchestra, a lot of flute — mainly classical instruments.”

Two new character posters have arrived for British drama, Viceroy’s House and we can’t help thinking they have a link to Valentine’s Day. With Gillian Anderson gazing lovingly at her Husband, Lord Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) on one side and the young lover’s, Jeet and Aalia cosying up to each other.

Viceroy’s House is set in a time where men were seen to rule their women and these posters depict this in a blatant manner with both Lord Mountbatten and Jeet in regal, honourable stances ever so slightly in front of the ladies. Even though fitting for the time, to portray this on promotional posters in the 21st century makes them feel dated. Oh and while we are here does anyone else, after watching our previous trailer post for Viceroy’s House, think Gillian Anderson has...
