There's something to be said for 9-1-1 managing to hit the most absurd comedic beats in one scene and transition directly into the heartfelt the next, and it does not feel quite as unbelievable as it sounds.
9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 5 was an interesting hour, to say the least, with three competing storylines almost fighting for dominance -- some hitting their mark more than others.
This was another heavy character-driven hour, which again, coming off the heels of the three-part extravaganza, felt very earned.
For Hen, 9-1-1 Season 7 has seen her ups and downs (mostly ups), as Interim Captain highlighted, but it hasn't ventured much into her home life.
That changed here as Hen and Karen prepared to bring a newborn into the Wilson household, and you could tell just how joyful and grateful they were as they sat around the Buckley-Han table and perused through hand-me-downs.

[This story contains spoilers from season seven, episode five of 9-1-1, “You Don’t Know Me.”]
A couple of months ago, 9-1-1 co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear reached out to actor Lou Ferrigno Jr. — who had guest-starred in three flashback episodes of the second season — about reprising his role as firefighter Tommy Kinard in the seventh season of the hit Fox-turned-abc first-responder drama.
Ferrigno Jr., who says he had nothing but fond memories of working with the writer and producer years ago, was instantly intrigued to learn that Minear was in the early stages of writing a multi-episode arc that would allow viewers to check back in with Tommy in the present. That storyline, as it turns out, would involve Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark), the ostensibly straight character who would navigate his newfound attraction to Tommy in the landmark 100th episode, which aired last Thursday.

Some fans may have seen the hints written on the wall throughout the show, while others got caught completely by surprise.
A show of hands; who knew Buck was a closet gay guy -- or at least bisexual at the moment. My hand is definitely down! Shock factor.
Reviews of this new development are a mix of "it's about time" and "Wth" from astonished fans and Buck-lovers.
Is this a one-off thing that wasn't reciprocated by Buck? Or is this a new plot twist that will completely change Buck's character development for good?
There is a lot to unpack after an intense, sexually charged scene. Here are our thoughts on this recent development.

When 9-1-1 was canceled, our hearts sank.
Luckily, the cancellation came with a caveat: Fox's former flagship series was being picked up by rival network ABC.
It was a stunning decision that came after a booming 9-1-1 Season 6, which saw the series re-embracing many qualities that made it such a success from the onset.
At the time, Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich said:
"Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons, and we are honored to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC."
When the last season wrapped up, all the principal characters were in a solid place, with the 118 even doing some bonding on the roof, memories of their most recent triumphs playing fresh on their minds.

The central joke surrounding Dr. Zoidberg (Billy West) on the sci-fi sitcom "Futurama" was established early on. Set in the early years of the 31st century, "Futurama" features a rogue's gallery of aliens, robots, mutants, and talking severed heads living alongside its relatively recognizable human characters. Zoidberg is a bipedal lobster-like alien who regularly issues drugs and surgically slices into the employees of Planet Express. In some of Zoidberg's first scenes, way back in 1999, he can be heard saying things like "Now open your mouth and let's take a look at that brain" or diagnosing his human patients with strange, fish-sounding diseases like fin fungus. He can sever and reattach limbs without much issue, although he doesn't always put them in the right place.
The gag, of course, is that he's a bad doctor. Being a space alien — specifically a Decapodian — Zoidberg doesn't seem able to grasp the biology of the mammals he works with.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead For Harry Potter Night Of “The Masked Singer”
Wednesday night marked the end of yet another competitor’s journey on “The Masked Singer” — a lone wolf, if you will. Or rather, a teen wolf.
The singing competition celebrated spooky season with a Harry Potter-themed episode this week, marking the return of Hawk after he beat Royal Hen — later revealed to be Billie Jean King — in a Battle Royale last week. This time around, he performed “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” by The Police.
Following his performance, Hawk was sorted into Ravenclaw by the sorting hat, and the judges guessed it might be Ryan Phillippe, Andrew Garfield or Billie Joe Armstrong under the mask. In the end though, they were all incorrect.
Because, in the end, Hawk was unmasked to be… “Teen Wolf” star Tyler Posey.
Posey just released a new album called “Unraveled” earlier this year,...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details about the eliminated contestant from Wednesday’s episode of The Masked Singer.
Elton John was the man of the hour on Wednesday’s episode of The Masked Singer.
No, the prolific musician didn’t make an appearance (though Jenny McCarthy did mention he was watching). Instead, four contestants paid tribute to John with their song choices. But first, Robin Thicke kicked things off with a rousing rendition of “Tiny Dancer.”
The contestants cycled through John’s hits, like “Bennie and The Jets” and “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting).” But, none were quite so fitting as Royal Hen’s selection, “Philadelphia Freedom.”
You see, underneath the mask was none other than Billie Jean King, who John penned that song for.
Named after her tennis team, the lyrics of the song are meant to honor John’s admiration for King, after the pair built a strong bond through their philanthropy.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 10, Episode 4 of “The Masked Singer,” “2000s Night,” which aired Oct. 11 on Fox.
Michael Rapaport had never sung in public until “The Masked Singer.” Now, he can’t stop. Rapaport was unmasked on Wednesday as the Pickle, the latest costumed celebrity to go home on the hit Fox unscripted series.
“I was nervous about it. I have never sang publicly before. I am not a singer. I’m not a dancer,” Rapaport told Variety. “But the world soon found out that I have the voice of an angel. My singing and my voice brings tears of joy. And I had a lot of fun doing the show. I came to win. Unfortunately, I didn’t win this season, but you know the impression of the Pickle will live on forever!”
No one guessed Rapaport, who sang Weezer’s “Beverly Hills” this week.

A wacky film based on a stage show by comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp, Dicks: The Musical – a riff on The Parent Trap with two adult men as the starring twins — opens in seven theaters in NY, LA and San Francisco on a crowded specialty weekend as theatrical releases of fall film festival titles accelerates.
Dicks, from A24, developed by Chernin Entertainment, is, according to press notes, a first “adult musical comedy” for both. (It’s Chernin’s second musical after hit The Greatest Showman.) Directed by Larry Charles, it stars the two creators Jackson and Sharp as self-obsessed businessmen who discover they’re long-lost identical twins and come together to plot the reunion of their eccentric divorced parents. They’re joined by an A-list roster of Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, Bowen Yang and Megan Thee Stallion.

This post contains spoilers for "Foe."
Director Garth Davis makes "no apologies" for the fact that his new movie, "Foe," keeps the audience largely in the dark for much of its runtime.
"This is not a movie to sit back and go to sleep," he told me in an interview earlier this week. "I mean, this is a movie that asks you to be engaged. You are investigating, trying to figure out what's happening. It's asking a lot of you, but that's the point of the movie."
The futuristic science fiction film follows a young couple, Hen (Saoirse Ronan) and Junior (Paul Mescal), whose frayed marriage is shredded even further when a stranger (Aaron Pierre) arrives on their doorstep and drops a metaphorical bomb that upends their lives. With Earth rapidly dying, Junior has been conscripted to live on a space station for two years, and he's not allowed to bring Hen with him.

You have an Oscar-nominated actor who’s played everything from queens to killing machines. You’ve paired her with a performer who is arguably the hottest, most in-demand next-gen leading man of the moment. The source material is the second novel from an acclaimed writer, whose first book (I’m Thinking of Ending Things) was one of the more intriguing page-to-screen adaptations in years. He co-wrote the screenplay with the director, whose previous work on Lion (2016) and the limited series Top of the Lake (2013) suggests he knows how to helm left-of-center journeys both accessible and moving.

Due to the deliberately mysterious nature of the film, potential spoilers for "Foe" follow.
The premise of Garth Davis' turgid sci-fi mope-fest "Foe" is intriguing on paper. It's 2065, and the world is dying. Water and food are in short supply, and the government is experimenting with station-bound space colonies. Junior (Paul Mescal) is to be recruited for a two-year space mission that would keep him away from his long-suffering wife Hen (Saoirse Ronan). In exchange, the government has offered to outfit Hen's home with a pre-programmed clone of Junior, designed to keep her company.
From the premise, one might assume "Foe" plays out like a speculative "Twilight Zone" thought exercise, or perhaps a wicked/fun grim morality tale like one might encounter in "Tales from the Crypt." But, dear readers, let me assure you that "Foe" does nothing intriguing. Indeed, the bulk of Davis' pity party is little more than extended scenes of meandering,...

[The following story contains spoilers from Foe.]
In Garth Davis’ new genre mashup, Foe, the future of the planet — and a relationship — hinges, in part, on the possibilities around artificial intelligence in response to climate change.
The Amazon Studios film, which is set to release globally on Oct. 6, is based on author and co-writer Iain Reid’s 2018 novel of the same name. Set in the near, climate-devastated future, one couple living on a remote farm becomes a test subject for humanity’s survival.
The book has garnered a wide range of genre descriptors — psychological thriller, horror, science fiction, to name a few — and the film aims to live in each one, sometimes simultaneously. Yet, for writer-director Davis, who spoke about the making of the film in a post-screening discussion at the 2023 New York Film Festival, he not only found “the book completely compelling in its mystery” but was ultimately attracted to the relationship between Saoirse Ronan...

Foe, a complicated love story set in the near future amid burned out farmland, intertwines AI and climate catastrophe with the challenges of keeping a marriage together — all elements director Garth Davis (Lion) said pulled him to the story.

In a landscape marred by ecological hardships and shrouded in dystopian shades, Foe, directed by Garth Davis and adapted from Iain Reid’s novel of the same name, attempts to paint a panorama of anguish, mystery and existential dread. With Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal and Aaron Pierre at the forefront, the film navigates through a terrain of domesticity entangled with environmental and interpersonal discord. The film does excel in the visual space, but meanders through its scenic wasteland in search of a connection with characters so despondent they repel more than engage.
Foe starts with Hen (Ronan) crying in the shower. Her voice-over provides some commentary as she talks about her dull life with her husband Junior (Mescal). “Foe” is a grandly muddled dystopian sci-fi movie starring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal as a Midwestern farm couple in 2065 (they appear to be the only Midwestern farm couple left). When you hear the film’s premise, which makes it sound like a cross between “Interstellar” and “Blade Runner,” you may think it’s going to be one of those movies in which a pair of critical darlings from the indie world leave their low-budget poetic movies behind to plug themselves into the blockbuster machine. But “Foe” isn’t a visual-effects-laden, box-office-fixated lollapalooza. The movie, the bulk of which takes place in the couple’s 200-year-old farmhouse, is small-scale and intimate, and it’s been designed to milk Ronan and Mescal for every inch of their raw actorly integrity.
It opens with Ronan standing in the shower, weeping. We hear her character, Hen (short for Henrietta), in voice-over, thinking back...

After providing the raw fodder for Charlie Kaufman’s characteristically cryptic I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Canadian novelist Iain Reid serves up more brain-bender material in Garth Davis’ Foe. Anchored by emotionally raw performances from Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal, with Aaron Pierre as a stranger bringing equal parts seductive charm and understated menace, this brooding psychological sci-fi about a dying planet and a floundering marriage is initially unsettling but steadily devolves into sappiness, confusion and self-important solemnity.

Love can make people do crazy, incredible things. It can force people into impossible choices, and it can rupture the effort it takes to keep the feeling intact and sacred. In Garth Davis’ new film “Foe,” love is the central force behind every choice, good or bad, but it isn’t enough to mend old wounds and fend off new ones, not this time.
The film is an emotional rollercoaster bursting full of dynamic tensions, mind-bending twists and shattering truths. It’s the perfect combination of high marital drama and science fiction thinkpiece, and with the lengths the film goes to, “Foe” is a worthy addition to the emotional sci-fi canon.
Davis’ new film, which he co-wrote alongside the original novel’s author Iain Reid, tells the story of Hen (Saoirse Ronan) and Junior (Paul Mescal), a young married couple living a quiet life on a farm in the middle of nowhere.

Can you believe we're through six seasons of 9-1-1?
The megahit procedural has been on the airways for quite some time now, accumulating 96 episodes, numerous accolades, and a diehard fandom of ardent supporters.
With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and the fight for fair and equitable contracts ongoing, 9-1-1 Season 7 won't air this fall. But that doesn't mean the 9-1-1 chatter has to be put on the back burner.
As the series approaches 100 episodes, a miraculous feat in today's television landscape, we started thinking about some of the best moments throughout the series' run thus far. With so much overall screen time, narrowing down a few key moments was challenging.

With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and the fight for fair and equitable contracts ongoing, 9-1-1 Season 7 won't air this fall. But that doesn't mean the 9-1-1 chatter has to be put on the back burner.

What could otherwise be a smoldering, slam-dunk pairing between Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal is flipped on its head in the trailer for the upcoming sci-fi, psychological thriller Foe.
Based on the 2018 Iain Reid novel, the film follows rural couple Henrietta (Ronan) and Junior (Mescal) in the year 2065 whose “quiet life is thrown into turmoil when an uninvited stranger shows up at their door with a startling proposal,” according to the official log-line.
As revealed in the trailer, Junior has been offered the chance to join a futuristic space colony, with the caveat that he’d be traveling alone while Hen is left on Earth with “company” to replace him. “I don’t want a robot living with my wife,” Junior exclaims, but based on the marital strife that begins to unravel, it appears to be a proposal they both could consider. Watch the Foe trailer below.

Adapted from author Iain Reid's 2018 novel of the same name, the story follows unassuming couple Henrietta (Ronan) and Junior (Mescal), who are seemingly content to live out their mundane lives in total anonymity in the near future of 2065. Until, that is, a mysterious stranger arrives at their door with an irresistible offer to venture out into space. The trouble is, of course, only Junior is offered this life-changing invitation, while poor Hen is doomed to stay behind ... with the uncomfortable arrangement...
